In thas cases, both peak and average levels shouldbe recorded Sophisticated sound measurements and their procedures should becarid out by individuals experienced in acoustic measurements [Ar present, thers are ony afew noise standards that can be used to measure interior sound levels from mechanical equipment (.n, [ASTM Standards 1573 and E1574) Most manuals for sound level raters include sections on how to measure sound, but basic meth- ‘ods that canelp obvain acceptable measurements se included here ‘Determining the sound spectrum in a room or investigating & noite complaint usualy requires measuring sound pressure levels in the actave bands from 16 9 8000 Hz, In cases where tonal nose or rumbles the complaint, naron-band or 13 octave band measure- ‘ments aro recommended because oftheir greater frequency resolu tion, Whatever the measurement method, remember that sound pressure levels can vary significantly from pont to point ina room. Ina ream, each messurement point often provides diferent value for sound presse level, so the actal location of measurement is very important and must be detailed i the report. A survey could evord the location and level ofthe loudest postion, or could estab lisha few representative locations where occupants are normally sit- uated In general the most appropriate height is 4c 6 8 above the floor.
