Stereotypical Beliefs in
Counselling

Corey et al (2014) = stereotypes are oversimplified

and uncritical generalizations about individuals who
are identified as belonging to a specific group.
Stereotypical beliefs may influence on how counselors
view their clients during therapy, and may cause bias
perception that hinders counselling session from becoming
successful in exploring clients feelings and emotions.
Stereotyping is often discussed in the context of
multicultural setting because most of stereotypical beliefs
stem from generalization based on a persons race, sex,
ethnic, organizational background and culture.
Eg: Statements such as Chinese are rich people, Women
are weak, Malay are lazy and Government Officers are
careless in completing their jobs

Stereotypical Beliefs and Bias

Perceptions
Stereotyping is a common mistake done by trainees or novice
counselors due to cultural tunnel vision whereby a person
sees and making judgment based on his or her limited perception
of reality.
Gilbert Wrenn (1962) characterized culturally
encapsulated counselors according to 5 following traits;
1. Define reality according to one set of cultural
assumptions.
2. Shows insensitivity to cultural variations among individuals.
3. Accept unreasoned assumptions without or ignoring proof
that might disconfirm his or her own assumptions.
4. Fails to evaluate other viewpoints and makes little attempt
to cater the behavior of others.
5. Is trapped in one way of thinking that resists adaptation
and reject alternatives.
