The BPP originated in Oakland, California, by founders Huey Newton and Bobby
Seale. The Original six members of the Black Panthers included Elbert Big Man
Howard, Sherman Forte, Reggie Forte, Little Bobby Hutton, and Newton and Seale.
They adopted the Black Panther symbol from an independent political party
established the previous year by Black residents of Lowndes County, Alabama. The
Panthers also supported the Black Power movement, which stressed racial dignity and
self-reliance.The Party established patrols in Black communities to monitor police
activities and protect the residents from police brutality. The BPP combined elements
of socialism and Black Nationalism. , it promoted the development of strong Blackcontrolled institutions, calling for Blacks to work together to protect their rights and to
improve their economic and social conditions. The Panthers also emphasized class
unity, criticizing the Black middle class for acting against the interests of other, less
fortunate Blacks.

Treasurer. The Universal Negro Improvement and Nation of Islam
they initiated the National African American community survival
projects with negative alliances with white radicals and other
groups with people with color.
Legacy
For those who didnt live through the 1960s and 1970sthat infamous era in the US
most often described with the word tumultuousthe Black Panther Party is the
stuff of legends. The Panthers boldly stood up to the unbridled brutality and racism of
Americas police forces, stepping outside of the boundaries set by the civil rights
movement, openly advocating fighting fire with fire, and aligning themselves with
foreign governments and organizations considered anti-imperialist, including the
National Liberation Front (NLF) of Vietnam.
