Introduction
a. How many of you have worked an unpaid internship?
b. Imagine you had an unpaid internship that demanded 40
hours a week of your time in addition to school. Now
imagine that to start your chosen career, you have to
participate in the internship until you reach the age limit
imposed by the industry for when you can start? And also
imagine, that at any point during the internship, you can
get seriously hurt and never get to play again. Meanwhile,
your bosses (ie head coach, adminstrators) are making lot
of money off of videos of you at work, selling the clothes
you wear to work, and off of people. Thus lies the
conundrum of the modern day aspiring athlete.
c. Need- To fix this system.

a. Danger student athletes give in comparison to the money
they generate.
i. Do you remember Kevin Ware? Participating in the
tournament which generates close to a billion dollars
in revenue, snapped his leg on national tv and his
basketball career was all but over. (he now plays for
Georgia State).
ii. Likewise, Marcus Lattimore, tore his acl, though he
was a star when he was a freshman arguably could
have contributed mightily to a pro team and been
compensated. Flamed out of the NFL without playing
a down.
iii. Money the coaches make.
iv. Money the schools make on gameday, video games
(40 million dollar settlement)

vi. Rebuttal of the free education argument. Richard

b. Satisfaction- a more equitable solution for those who are
directly taking the risks. Plan- Use the money from tv
revenue and advertisement to set up a trust for the players
c. Connecting- Dont see scandals where kids sell their own
jersey for food, lose all the handwringing, maintain the
integrity of the game.
d. Visualization of the futureno more sad stories like kevin
ware or marcus lattimore.
Need, satisfaction, visualization

a. Summary- super lucrative business where the driving


efforts are being made by unpaid participants. At its heart,
ridiculous.
b. Call to action- publicly support efforts like Northwestern
football trying to unionize, sign petitions, or stop watching
college sports
