ITEM NEEDED:
A microphone
CHARACTER BREAKDOWN: 3M
CHARACTERS:
Gene- A fight announcer
Goliath
The Colonel- Goliaths manager
Gene is on stage at center.
GENE: All right, we are just minutes away from the match up everybodys been waiting
for. Its been several weeks since the Philistines arrived in Israel, and at long last, the
champion has a challenger. Oh, here comes the champion now to talk about this fight.
Goliath enters with the Colonel.
GENE: Giant Goliath, and his manager the Colonel. Colonel, is your man ready
for this fight?
COLONEL: Are we ready? Weve been ready! Weve been waiting weeks for one of
these Miserable-ites to come out and face the giant. Hes ready, hes hungry, and hes
gonna crush his opponent.
GENE: I think we were all expecting maybe one of the elite guard from King Sauls
army to take up the challenge, but instead its a young shepherd boy. Goliath, what are
your thoughts?

KIDS OF THE BIBLE: DAVID

SKIT
GOLIATH: Well let me tell you something, Mean Gene, I dont care if its a shepherd,
a soldier, or a whole bunch of soldiers, Im here for a fight, and theres nothing these
Israelites can throw at me that I cant handle.
COLONEL: Just look at the size of this man! His sword is giant, his shield is giant, his
spear is giant. His armor. His helmet. Hes a giant, Mean Gene! Do you think a little
shepherd boy can defeat a giant?
GENE: As I understand it, this shepherd boy has already killed a few wolves and lions
while defending his flocks.
COLONEL: That dont matter a hill of beans, Mean Gene! This is war! This aint no animal, this is a lean, mean fighting machine!
GENE: From what I understand, the boy David isnt even wearing armor. Hes got a
sling shot and a bag of rocks.
Goliath laughs.
GENE: And hes counting on the Lord to give him strength.
COLONEL: Wait! Did you say, the Lord?
GENE: Thats right, the same Lord that gave Samson his strength. The one who crumbled the walls of Jericho. The one who saved Israel from the wicked Pharaoh of Egypt.
GOLIATH: All I can say is good luck!
COLONEL: Goliath, buddy, this is no laughing matter. Weve gotta get you out of there!
If the Lord is on that kids side
GOLIATH: Get out of my way, Colonel! Im gonna crush that kid!
Goliath exits.
COLONEL: Goliath, no! Youre throwing your life away! Think about your family! Think
about your endorsements! And what about me??

ITEMS NEEDED:
A glass of milk and a glass of soda
There are two beverages here in front of me. Which one of these is going to give you
strong bones?
Which one of these is going to make you stronger?
Which one of these is healthier for you?
Sodas are nothing but flavor and sugar. Its true! Theres no nutritional value to soda
whatsoever. Milk, on the other hand, has vitamins and nutrients that a growing body
needs.
When youre young and still growing its important to drink milk, eat good fruits and vegetables, and limit the junk. The more you eat right, the better shape you will be in as an
adult. Youll be healthier, and youll be stronger.
When it comes to matters of the Spirit, we have a different source of strength. We have
God. When life is challenging, God is there. When we need extra strength to face our
problems, God gives us that strength.
God can give us strength to face giants, or just strength to make it through a bad day.
When you need a little extra strength in your day, go to God. Pray for his Spirit to give
you strength. God will give you all you need.

CUP TOSS
ITEMS NEEDED:
Plastic Solo cups
A baseball
A small bouncy ball
INSTRUCTIONS:
Build a tower of Solo cups - three on the bottom, two on the second row, and one on
top. Bring one kid on stage and give him the baseball. Tell him he has to knock the cups
over in three tosses with a ball.
Then, take away the baseball and give him the small bouncy ball.
Repeat for a few players, if time allows, so you can get a winner or two.
VARIATION:
Use larger balls for younger kids and eliminate the bouncy ball option.
WHATS THE POINT?
God gives us strength to face big problems, even when we are small.

INTRO
Today we get to the most exciting, most popular, most beloved kid story in the Bible.
This is the one that everyone, even kids who have never been to church, have heard.
Its the inspiration behind a hundred other stories. Its the story that lends its name to
any sporting competition that pits a big underdog against a mighty champion. Its the
story of David and Goliath.
If theres any story that should give us confidence that kids can do great things, its David and Goliath. Every kid has had a dream that he could do something like David. We
long for the day we can beat our Mom or Dad at basketball, or checkers, or our favorite
board game. Its the challenge that keeps us coming back for more, hoping that this will
be the one time we get to beat the big guy.
David and Goliath is the reason we cheer for the underdogs during March Madness.
We believe that a number fifteen seed can beat a number two seed. We believe it because weve seen it happen. We believe it because of David and Goliath.
Davids story shows us that God can give us strength to beat a giant. Lets read the
story together and see just how we can find the same strength David found.

LARGE GROUP LESSON

MAIN POINT
This story has the hand of God all over it. It begins with a giant issuing a challenge to
the children of God, the army of Israel. If one man can step forward and defeat Goliath,
the Philistines will surrender. But who would have the courage to fight a giant?
None of Sauls men dared to take on Goliath. He was too big, and his reputation in
battle was widely known. Goliaths size made him an intimidating foe for any man. Even
King Saul, who was a pretty tough guy, stayed silent.
Then David arrived on the scene. David was too young to serve in the army. He was
still living at home with his parents, tending their sheep. David was a pretty good shot
with a sling, having killed lions and wolves, but size wise he was still no match for Goliath.
David took up Goliaths challenge because the giant dared to insult God. David knew
that God would give him the strength to defeat the giant. He knew because he knew
God would not stand to be mocked. David took down the giant and saved his people
because God gave him strength.
DRIVE IT HOME
Its not very likely that any of us will face a giant like Goliath this week, but each of us
will face challenges. Some of you may have problems with a bully, not one as big as
Goliath, but a big problem nonetheless. Who will give you strength to stand up for yourself when that bully shows up this week?
Some of you may have another kind of challenge. Maybe its a hard test. Maybe its a
problem at home. Maybe its an illness. Maybe you just end up having a really terrible
day. Who will give you the strength you need to keep going? Who will give you strength
of body and mind when all you want to do is quit?
The same God who gave David his strength. Thats who!
It doesnt matter how young you are. We are all going to face challenges. Were going
to face giants and problems bigger than we are. When those problems come, God will
be there. He will not leave us or abandon us. He will give us courage to stand strong
and strength to overcome.
God is the strength we need to get through bad days. Hes the strength youll need to
face kids who push you down. He will continue to give you strength as you grow older
and face even bigger challenges. He will always be there, and he will always be your
strength.

KIDS OF THE BIBLE: DAVID

LARGE GROUP LESSON

David didnt defeat the giant because he was stronger. He did it because he had the
Lord as his strength. No matter what challenges you face in your life, you can defeat
them. God will be your strength, just as he was for David.
CLOSE WITH A SIMPLE PRAYER
Dear God,
Give us the strength we need to stand up for you and to serve you well.
In Jesus name,
Amen
