Zenith Chapter of the National Honor Society

Membership Packet

Mission & Vision of WW-P North Zenith Chapter

The National Honor Society (NHS) is the nation's premier organization established to
recognize outstanding high school students. More than just an honor roll, NHS serves to
honor those students who have demonstrated excellence in the areas of scholarship,
leadership, service, and character. ---National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP)
The National Honor Society is a merit-based organization comprised of some of the
schools leaders in academics and extracurriculars. Students in the eleventh and twelfth
grades with an unweighted GPA of 3.5 or higher are invited to apply for selection into
NHS. A faculty council reviews the applicants leadership, community service, and
overall character to make the final selections. Once admitted, members of NHS serve
the community by tutoring fellow students, raising money for charity, and performing
other community service projects.
Membership
Membership in a local chapter is an honor bestowed by the faculty
council based on outstanding scholarship, character, leadership, and
service. Members have the responsibility to continue to exhibit these
qualities after selection. Should a member violate the chapter
guidelines, the WWP student handbook, or civil law, they will be at risk
of dismissal.

Candidates become members when inducted at a special ceremony. A National Honor

Society member who transfers from another school and brings a letter of
recommendation from his former principal or adviser is automatically accepted. The
transfer member must meet the new chapters standards within one semester to remain
eligible.
Members who resign or are dismissed can never again be made eligible for
membership. Senior members in good standing are eligible for the National Honor
SocietyScholarship Program.
Officers
All officers shall be elected by a majority vote of the members. Only active members
shall be eligible for offices and the term of all officers shall be one year.
President - The President is the chief officer of the National Honor Society, and
shall preside over all meetings and establish communications with the
administration and faculty council. The President shall set the agenda for all
meetings in collaboration with the other officers and the advisor. He or she shall
have no more rights than any other member, and must attend all general
meetings or be issued a warning. When necessary, the President shall approve
committee chairpersons with the approval of the other officers.
Vice President - The Vice President shall take the seat of the President in case
of dismissal, removal, or other absence of the President. In the Zenith Chapter,
the Vice President chairs the NHS Tutoring committee, and is responsible for
coordinating between the administration, guidance, parents, students seeking
tutoring, and the tutors.

Secretary - The Secretary shall keep notes of meetings and handle internal &
external communications. This includes managing the chapter's gmail account.

The secretary will also handle attendance and protocol at meetings. He or she
will send out reminders of chapter meetings, write and keep minutes of officer
and general meetings, and provide post-meeting minutes to members via email.
The Secretary is also responsible for publicity for all NHS sponsored events.
Treasurer - The Treasurer shall handle the budget and all financial transactions,
including deposits, withdrawals, donations, reimbursements, etc. The Treasurer
is the coordinator between the chapter and the financial secretary. He or she
shall provide a financial update at all officer and chapter meetings. When
necessary, he or she shall be the Fundraising Committee chairperson. He or she
also manages purchasing and supplies for the society.
Historian - The Historian shall keep records of all activities of the National Honor
Society. This includes taking pictures, saving important contact information, and
keeping detailed notes of event successes and areas for improvement. As the
historian, he or she shall also oversee the transition from one graduating class to
the next class of NHS members. In the Zenith Chapter, the historian oversees
the Teacher of the Month award.
Service Hours
All students shall be required to complete 15 hours of documented volunteer service,
with at least 5 hours completed through NHS Sponsored Activities.
Hour logs must be kept by members and submitted in the Spring prior to
graduation. Failure to complete the required hours will put a students
membership in good standing in jeopardy and prohibit said student from
receiving graduation honors that accompany NHS membership.

Attendance

Meetings will be held approximately once a month. A schedule of regular meeting dates
will be provided to members, although special meetings may be called and regularly
scheduled meetings may change due to unforeseen circumstances.
Members are required to attend all NHS meetings. All students will be permitted one
unexcused absence during the year. Excused absences require documentation, and
can be granted for the following reasons: school sponsored events, family emergencies,
sickness, etc.
Events & Tutoring
The NHS Executive Board, in collaboration with NHS members, works throughout the
year to organize fundraisers and special events which serve the community. These
events are discussed and planned at monthly meetings and through regular email
communication. Members are encouraged to suggest service project and fundraiser
ideas to the executive board!
NHS also serves the WWP district by coordinating tutoring
across schools and levels. The Vice President coordinates these
tutoring opportunities.

executive board, or the local chapter advisor.
