Concept Application Paper # 1
Summary
The article I chose is from Business Insider and it is about a personality test used by top
companies to measure how much of a successful leader their employees can be. The test is
called CPI 260 and is published by an organization named CPP. A psychologist Sam
Manoogian analyzed the CPI test and based on his analysis, he chose 18 traits crucial to
successful leadership. The 18 traits are: Self-awareness, self-control, resilience, use of power
and authority, comfort with organizational structures, responsibilities and accountability,
decisiveness, interpersonal skills, understanding others, collaboration, working with and
through others, creativity, handling sensitive problems, action orientation, self-confidence,
managing change, influence, and comfort with visibility. These 18 traits are organized into 5
core competencies: self-management, organizational capabilities, team building and
teamwork, problem solving, and sustaining the vision.
Relation to OB Concept
This article relates to the topic of individual difference and personalities we talked about in
the class. These 18 traits listed above relate to the big five personality factors we discussed in
our class. For instance, Self-control, self-awareness etc. relate to conscientious. Majority of
the fortune 500 companies use personality tests like Myers-Briggs Test to hire people. This
article doesnt use the CPI test to hire their managers; it shows how much of a successful
leader can you become. It mainly focuses on the specific traits that show what makes a
successful leader. This test shows how a manager controls a specific situation, how ready is
he/she, how does he/she react, how does he/she feel about the situation. This test is not like
other personality tests which discriminates you from other people or give you a four letter
combination. This test compares your characteristics with those of successful leaders. It lists
what areas you excel and what areas you need to work on. After knowing your strengths and
weaknesses, you can sharpen your strengths and work on weakness and become a leader.
