Please comment on how this activity will help you to achieve the Learning Outcomes as IB CAS requirement?
Despite my school being really good in terms of its facilities and program, the area near my school in Babakan
Madang is underdeveloped. Me and my friends have been blessed to be able to speak English fluently so some of the
12th graders such as Kelvin, Vanessa, Felicia, and other students from other grade, including me, have decided to teach
English in SDN 1 Babakan Madang to 5 th graders for 2 hours every Saturday. I will formulate a teaching plan and
provide quizzes and prizes so that learning can both be beneficial and fun for them. Pak Madung, who is also a teacher
at SPH, will be our supervisor and he will also help us become familiar with the school.

Engaged in issues of global importance

I also believe that English is the international language of the present as well as the future. Most of the
children in SDN 1 Babakan Madang come from a poor background and I believe teaching them English will
help them gain a competitive edge when they come to work in the future. I believe each and every one of the
children I will teach has amazing talents and they need to be able to present their talent well using a language
that is most recognized in the world, and what language is more widely used than English? I hope that by
improving their education, I can help them advance in their carreer in the future and hopefully escape poverty
and also help Indonesia eradicate poverty, which is both a national and a global condition Im willing to help
get rid of.
Considered the ethical implications of their action
I have been blessed to be in SPH, which is one of the best and also most expensive schools in
Indonesia. But ironically, SPH Sentul is located in a heavily underdeveloped area. I believe as a good
countryman and a follower of Christianity, helping others who are less fortunate than myself is the right and
ethical thing to do. I believe that donating money is a short term solution for a long term problem, and
investing my time to educate others to improve their own future is much more beneficial than just giving away
money to less fortunate people. I chose to teach English as it will be really beneficial for them and also Im
already fluent at it and its fairly easy to teach English compared to other subjects like math or science.
Planned and initiated activities
In order to teach English effectively, me and my friends will need to formulate a teaching plan that is
both fun, useful, and easy to understand. I will do some research on teaching methods from my teacher and
the internet and will implement some of them to the children I will teach. I will also provide quizzes with
prizes to make learning fun for them.
