1.1Physical, social and

intellectual development
and characteristics of
students Demonstrate
knowledge and
understanding of physical,
social and intellectual
development and
characteristics of students
and how these may affect
learning.

The artefact is the

class profile
designed for the
Kindergarten cohort
(44 students) I was
working with on my
previous
professional
learning experience
in January/February
2016.

Developing this class profile provided

me with the opportunity to discuss
with my mentor teacher and the other
teachers working with the
Kindergarten cohort, what information
was important to add to the profile for
this particular group of students.
During the process of gathering
information for the class profile I was
able to develop my understanding of
the students cultural and linguistic
backgrounds, age and medical
conditions.
This provided me with valuable
information when preparing my
lessons to ensure student safety, as
well as determine differentiation
strategies to use in my teaching to
establish achievable learning
challenges for all students. Knowledge
gained through this opportunity
provided me with information to
further build upon my relationships

This artefact meets the APST

1.1 as it provides information
for classroom teachers and
casual teachers entering the
class on the intellectual
development of the students
as well as notes and
characteristics of students
and their social behaviours.

The class profile includes

further information about the
students in this Kindergarten
group who are from diverse
cultural and linguistic
backgrounds. It outlines the
students nationalities and
the additional languages
spoken at home (APST 1.2).
This artefact also contains

religious and
socioeconomic

with individual students.

By adding the Best Start Assessment
data to the class profile I was able to
provide a diagnostic assessment of
individual students skills for myself to
refer to when planning my lessons.
This influenced my differentiation
considerations and allowed me to be
responsive to individual students
learning strengths and needs.
My mentor teacher and I discussed our
hesitance to place comments in the
Notes column of the class profile. As it
was so early in the year and the
Kindergarten students were
transitioning to this new environment
and routine, we wanted to allow more
time for students to settle in to the
school routine, context and make
friends. Although undocumented in the
class profile my mentor teacher and I
were working through strategies to
support students transition to school.

reactions. This resource is
therefore valuable for not
only the classroom teachers
but also casual teachers
entering the classroom in
order to keep students safe
(APST 4.4).
