2.1 - Content and teaching

strategies of the teaching
areas - Demonstrate
knowledge and
understanding of the
concepts, substance and
structure of the content and
teaching strategies of the
teaching area.

The artefact is the

Certificate of
Participation in the
Primary Connections
Ready: Pre-service
Teacher Program
completed in April
2016.
Primary Connections
Linking science with
literacy is an
innovative approach
to teaching and
learning which aims
to enhance primary
school teachers
confidence and
competence for
teaching science.

Through completing the Primary

Connections Ready: Pre-service
Teacher Program I developed my
knowledge of the 5Es constructivist
model for teaching primary science,
science and literacy, incorporating ICT,
backward design and embedding
assessment.

This artefact meets APST 2.1

as the focus of the program
involved using the 5E
constructivist model to
effectively teach Primary
science. I developed my
knowledge in content
organisation through a
deeper understanding of
what is involved in each
stage of the model

2.2 - Content selection and

organisation - Organise
content into an effective
learning and teaching
sequence.
2.3 - Curriculum, assessment
and reporting - Use
curriculum, assessment and
reporting knowledge to
design learning sequences
and lesson plans.

Completing the program has impacted

my future teaching of the science
concepts as I explored the 5E
sequence for teaching science and the
research detailing the effectiveness for
using this model on students learning
outcomes. I have developed my
understanding of what is required
including assessment at each of the
engage, explore, explain, elaborate
and evaluate stages of the unit. During
the program we successfully created a
unit of work collaboratively in teams
using this 5E teaching sequence. I now

The artefact meets APST 2.2

as the 5E model for teaching
primary science
demonstrates how to
effectively organise content
for students to construct their
own learning. During the
program I completed a
backward design unit planner.
Primary Connections Ready

2.5- Literacy and numeracy

strategies - Know and
understand literacy and
numeracy teaching strategies
and their application in
teaching areas.
2.6 - Information and
Communication Technology
(ICT) - Implement teaching
strategies for using ICT to
expand curriculum learning
opportunities for students.

feel I am confident in implementing a

Primary Connections unit of work.
This will impact on my students, as I
will be able to successfully implement
of unit of work designed around the 5E
constructivist model for teaching
primary science. Students will
participate in engaging, appropriate
and organised lessons that incorporate
ICT effectively.

program has assisted in

meeting APST 2.3 as one of
the five fundamental
principles of Primary
Connections involves
embedding assessment.
During the program we
explored the various forms
assessment and where they
belong in the 5E
constructivist model
sequence.
Throughout the Primary
Connections: Linking science
with Literacy program we
explored the various ways to
integrate literacy and
numeracy strategies
successfully into the 5E
process for investigating
scientific concepts (APST2.5).
The majority of the Primary
Connections units of work
incorporate ICT effectively to
expand student learning. We
explored the units of work
that contained these
resources and evaluated how

they would be implemented

in the classroom.
