CORROSION ANALYSER (HALF CELL POTENTIAL)

OBJECTIVE:
To assess the corrosion condition in the reinforced concrete.

APPARATUS REQUIRED:
Corrosion analyser, electrodes, solutions, provisions for grouting and other
material required for grounding and other materials required for test.

WORKING PRINCIPAL OF EXPERIMENT:

When there is active corrosion, current flow (in the form of ion migration)
through the concrete between anodic and cathodic sites is accompanied by
an electric potential field surrounding the corroding bar. The equipotential
lines intersect the surface of the concrete and the potential at any point can
be measured using the half cell potential method. By mapping equipotential
contrours on the surface, those portions of the structures where there is a
high likelihood of corrosion activity are identified by their high negative
potential.

ADVANTAGES:

inexpensive
Simple to perform
Whole structure quickly surveyed
Data analysis simple

LIMITATIONS:

Limited information for potentials between 200 and 350 mV CSE

No information on corrosion rate
Difficult to perform when contaminants present on or in concrete
