Five years of war had changed many things for They had siarted the war full of self-confidence, based ond they had had, hrough a sipenority in aircraft, ground troops and tactical insight precisely what their opponems lacked. Laver in the war this sujuation changed as far as the Allies were eoneemed, and slowly but surely things becaine increasingly more difficult, After the Jandings in Normandy in June the Germans were forced to light on hree fronts, ard this Was far (co much for their military machine, By streamlining production facilities, “Reichs' Minister Aloert Speer had driven German industry to tremendous productive output im 1944, despite shortages in manpower, raw materials and continuous bombing. Nevertheless, this was wot sufficient (@ compensate for the tremendous losses suffered, principally on the Russian front, This situation, plus overwhelming allied oir superiority an the Westera fiont, made it impossible for the 1an oops to halt the advance. Aer a struggle lasting two and a half months, American weops finally managed @ breakout at Avrunches and, via a weakly defended rear ar out an outflunking mancuver. This lead to the so-called Falaise part of the German material and manpower numerous vietorie These were achiey were able to carry pocket in whieh a la were lost. Following this huge defeat the Germans were ne longer table to offer effective resistance 10 the allied troops” increasing pressure. After un advance of maay hundreds of kilemeters the Alhes came to a halt near the BelginnDutch border, not because of Gennan opposition but through lack of supplies, There were indeed 2 number of parts in allied hands but these were not yet fit For se his meant that all supplies fad to be transported by road, witich lead 10 enormous delays, The advance had gone extremely wel but in September this would change. ‘The West Wall, a defensive line of fortifications, trenches, bunkers and tank traps, ran through the whole of France and Belgium right up lo the Dutch border. The extensive river area in tlie Netherlands formed a northern defense against a possible reakthrough inte Genrany. Operation Market Garden, Field Marsital Montgomery's brainchild, caused a great shock during the its few days, Should this operation succeed it would be simplicity ‘self for British aemor to push on inte Germany. This would also explain the rapid build-up of reinforcements for U.SS-Panzer- Korps, which was responsible for the allied defeat at Amhem. This ‘coms consisied of two hardened armored divistons, both of which sulleving badly in Normandy. These units, namely 9.SS-Panzet Division “Hebenstaufen’ and 10) 8§-Panzer-Division “Frundsbery™ vad been together since their formation, Together they had xperienced the fighting in Russia and Normandy, and the hdrawal back towards the Netherlands, The divisions were sssembled in an arse 40 the north of Amkem, and in this quiet The Frundsbere Division sckwater they woukl be reorganized, Hid be semloreed with new equipment and some of the vaining Stronger units from 9'SS-Panzer-Division. The fatter vas {o reusrn to Germany where it would be totally re-equipped ne divisions no longer possessed much heavy equipment, and ch of what they had was heing repaired. The Hohenstaulen had a PanzerRegiment with a few tanks, all of whielh were under Tepmir, an AufKlirungs-Abteilung (Reconnaissance Unit) with approximately 40 haif-tracks and armored cars, a Panzeriéiger Abteilung (Anti-Tank Unit) with some towed and self-propelled uns, and a Flak-Ableilung (Anti Ain hamber of guns, 10.8S-Panzet-Division still possessed a Panzer: Regiment with a unit equipped with sixteen Panzer Vs aad Sturmgeschitze (StuG., Self-Propelled Gun or SP), another unit that was about to be equipped with Panther tanks, and a Reconnaissance Unit with an unknown number of fighting hieles. On 22 August the division had eeecived 21 Jagépanzer [Vs for its AnticTank Unit. The Anti-Aireraft Unit hud an unspecified number of guns, Something unusual had occurred with the Anillerie-Abteilung (Artillery Unit), which way now better {equipped than ever before. This came about during the retrest tothe Netherlands when they came across an abandoned ttein, loaded entirely with 10.5em howitzers. The guns were unloaded and towed away with the division’s lorries, On the retreat to the Netherlands, ILSS-Ponzer-Korps was ordered to leave a strong battle group with Kampfgruppe (KGr) Walther, which was responsible for the defense of the border ares pear the Albert Canal tween Lommel and Valkenswaacd, Through this 10,SS-Panzer Division Jost its strengthened Anti-Tank Unit, a large part of its anillery, part ofits Recee Unit and some of its Pionoer Unit ct Actillery Unit) with ‘The curbulent autumn of 1944 way nor a pleasant cme for the German Ministey ef Propagands.
