PREVENTION OF

MECHANICAL HAZARDS

PROTECTION AGAINST CRUSHING HAZARDS

Protection of human body against crushing hazards in two ways.
A minimum gap left between moving parts and human body.
Reducing forces or energy levels of moving parts.

PROTECTION USING A MINIMUM GAP

BETWEEN MOVING PARTS
Minimum d gaps are to be provided to reduce risks.

SAFETY ZONE ENCLOSURE

PROTECTION BY REDUCING THE FORCES AND

ENERGY LEVELS OF MOVING PARTS
In some cases, forces and energy levels of moving parts can be reduced
to eliminate harm to human body.
This can be only applied if the parts have characteristics that ensure
required safety i.e. absence of sharp edges, cutting components.
Moving components can be equipped with protective device for
detecting human body to avoid danger by self-retracting.

PROTECTION BY REDUCING FORCES

SAFEGUARDING BY DISTANCES
Safeguarding by distances use a fixed or moving guard.
No voluntary movement can reach the danger zone.
No accessory objects such as glove, tool etc. can reach the danger
zone.

ACCESS BY REACHING UPWARDS

Safety distance determined between ground or working platform and
bottom of danger zone is a function of height of danger zone.

ACCESS BY REACHING OVER A FIXED

DISTANCE GUARD

A- Height of danger zone.

B- Height of guard.

C- Horizontal distance between danger zone and guard.

ACCESS BY REACHING THROUGH OPENING IN

THE GUARD
Sd- safety distance.
e- smallest dimension of opening.
