EDITORIAL
As salamu alaikum! May peace be upon you all!
In the name of Allah, the most gracious, the most merciful and peace and blessing be upon his final messenger.
This is the tenth edition of the Ramadan Guide 1437AH / 2016. It is an honour and a privilege to welcome you
to the most anticipated month in the Islamic Calendar. This very month, the final revelation (Al Quran) from
Allah was sent down, to connect heaven and earth for the last time with His final message & guide for
humanity. Its a month for us to recharge our souls and refocus our life towards the unlimited permanent
life, the Akhira.
In a busy world of constant material chase, Muslims in UK and globally must keep Allah alive in our words
and deeds, in open and secret - this is the true purpose and goal of fasting and Ramadan, anything less is
indeed a sad loss. As the God conscious, Al - Muttaqoon! Lets remember our service to humanity is
service to the Creator.
As viewers, and supporters of Europes No 1 British Bangladeshi Channel and the choice of
charitable giving, we cannot thank Allah and you all enough. Together we will keep pushing British
& Western Bangladeshis to make their individual and collective mark. Channel S has done this
many a times, Ramadan is where you break records to support needy causes in UK, Europe and
globally.
Though we celebrated Bangladeshi cricket in the T20 and Nadiya Hussains royal baking in
2016 but we cannot forget the worlds tragedy and despair. Be it the senseless, criminal acts
of violence in France and Brussels, the plight of refugees in Europe or the ongoing injustice
towards the Syrian people.

CONTENTS

Allah, forgive me and you; accept our prayers, including the nightly
whispers with humble hearts. Allah give us all Tawfiq and divine
strength to make the most of possibly our final Ramadan, especially
for a connection with his final revelation, Al Quraan revealed on a

Righteous Deeds

Mankind! We created you from a male and female, and made you into peoples and tribes so that you might come
to know each other. The noblest among you in Allah's sight is the one who best performs his duty (one with the most
taqwa). Allah is All-Knowing, All-Aware. (Surat al-Hujurat: 13)

Are we performing our duties?

Are we caring for each other?
Are we doing the righteous
deeds in our everyday life?
Life the transitory one, like
a daffodil. In this short span
of living in this world, are we
too much obsessed with the
worldliness? With greed? With
malice, envy, and arrogance?
Are we following the principle of
sharing, of sacrifice, of mutual
self-giving? Do we realise that
when we cook for ourselves,
without caring for others and
without sharing it with who need
it most, we eat nothing but sin?
Our greed makes us sin against
ourselves. Whatever we are
doing, we ourselves are going
to reap the fruits thereof. It is
better for us to do what is right
so that we will not be harmed.
If we do not work in a selfless
spirit, our own actions will
become our enemy. We are
behaving either as our own fiend
or our own friend.
Page

He has succeeded who purifies himself,

remembers the name of his Lord, and prays.
(Surat al-Ala 87:14)
We need to do righteous deeds to purify
our souls. We need to act for the benefit of
the world, for everyone. This is the method
by which we purify ourselves internally
like we cleanse our body with water and
soap externally. If we do not have a friendly
relationship with others, we cannot have
social harmony, happiness and peace. But
because of our greed, we have developed
an aggressive, exploitative relationship with
others. That greed burns up the whole earth
as we can see in natural disasters and human
conflicts, wars.
In recent history, migration has been a fact
of life. Millions of people are leaving their
countries to escape human rights abuses,
such as torture, persecution, armed conflict,
extreme poverty and even death. They are
uniquely vulnerable, without the usual
support structures most of us take for granted.
Everyday we are witnessing an increasing
number of vulnerable migrants. Around 1,700
refugees and migrants died trying to cross the
Mediterranean in January-April 2015 alone.
People in poverty are wailing across the globe
striving for food, clothes and shelter. Some
of them do not have two meals a day, some

do not have clothes to wear, and some

are struggling to protect themselves from
the clutches of severe cold. The situation
of violence in different parts of the world
has worsened as well as natural and manmade disasters taking place in different
countries.
But are we caring for the people in destitute
situation by disasters, ethnic cleansing and
unjust war in different countries?
For the first time since the World War II
era, the number of refugees worldwide
including Syrian, Palestinian, Iraqi,
Ukranian, Egyptian, African, Afgan,
Rohingya refugees has passed 50 million,
the United Nations announced in its
annual Global Trends Report. We are
living in an age of the crudest paradoxes:
unbelievable wealth amidst unbelievable
poverty; record levels of food amidst
record levels of hunger; and the paradox
of rising economic growth alongside rising
levels of poverty.
But we have the power to change our
lives, and the lives of those around us. All
they need is a little help. Our moral duty
always should be to act in ways that will
maximise human happiness and minimise
human suffering. A society can flourish

Ramadan LIVE 2016 | www.chsuk.tv

only when its members do not spend all

their wealth to fulfil their own desires but
reserve a portion of it for parents, relatives,
neighbours, the poor and the debilitated. As
the saying goes, Charity begins at home. A
true believer is thus always prepared, after
meeting the needs of their family, to assist
other people in need of their help. Thus the
spirit of kindness and well wishing is the
essence of charity. The giver is not to expect
any reward from the beneficiary, as there
awaits for him an abundant reward from
Allah material, moral and spiritual.

Always before starting a charity

programme a very skilled team of Channel
S use to visit every organisation more than
once to see their activities.
The expert team use their won way of
having a clear sense of financial transactions
of the relevant institution.
Apart from the Live Appeal programme
the team gives support and advice from
their own experience on every details of
fundraising.

The British Bangladeshis have always

been extending their hands with the true
spirit of helping others in need. They have
not limited their charity work only in
war-torn and disaster-stricken countries,
but played a significant role in the social
reform of the people of their home country
Bangladesh. They have established many
social, educational, cultural, charity and
humanitarian organisations one after another
for the orphans, unemployed, vulnerable
street children, and homeless people. The
role of the Bangladeshi community to set an
example to come forward in promotion of
Islam and to extend a hand of compassion
in the welfare of people in need has already
gained global recognition.

A Ramadan Magazine is published every

year to introduce and highlight different
details of an organisation to ensure
transparency and accountability

The Qur'an encourages the Muslim to

donate their funds:
the likeness of those who spend their wealth
in the way of Allah, is as the likeness of a grain
that sprouts seven spikes. In every spike there
are 100 grains, and Allah multiplies for whom
He will (2:261).

Channel S Fundraising Report

At a glance

To facilitate the preparation of fundraising

prior to the month of Ramadan, Channel
S provides each of the organisations/
institutions with training and technical
guidelines called Fundraising Guidance Pack.
To find out whether the money collected
from Live Ramadan Appeal has been spent
properly the television observes the ongoing activities after the month of Ramadan
and broadcast a special live program called
Charity in Progress.

Giving charity is thereby not seen as

detracting from income, but rather as
a multiplication in terms of spiritual
observance. When one spends in the way of
Allah, he or she receives in return (reward in
the Hereafter) on the scale of one to seven
hundred.
In keeping with the social reform, Channel
S has been maintaining its position as
the Channel of choice for about ten years
when it comes to charity during the
month of Ramadan. Mosques, educational
establishments, humanitarian institutes
and international charities continue to
make Channel S their first choice to extend
to the communities in Britain, Europe
and the United States. This is mainly
because Channel S has firmly upheld its
ethos of providing a platform for charity
organisations to demonstrate their work
transparently throughout the year.

Over the past 9 years, the most popular
television of the community, Channel S has
been working tirelessly pouring out itself
for humanitarian and social activities or to
aid social reformation. The television has
been involved in various social activities and
welfare of the suffering people in Bangladesh
and many countries around the world:
Channel S provided aid of almost 1
million last year to the victims of the most
terrible religious conflict in recent memory,
the Rohingya Muslims.

Ramadan LIVE 2016 | www.chsuk.tv

To promote the teaching of the Holy

Quran, Channel S successfully held its third
nationwide Qiraat competition, Q Factor
3 and distributed the Quran translated
in Bangla and Nepalese language in India,
Nepal, the United Kingdom and around the
world.
Provided humanitarian assistance to
the disaster areas of different parts of the
world including Nepal, Haiti, Indonesia,
the Philippines, Nigeria, Pakistan, Palestine,
Syria, Iraq, Ethiopia, Central Africa, Sudan
and Afghanistan.
Provided assistance to the development
and establishment of schools and
educational institutions including mosques
and madrasas in England, Ireland, Canada,
Italy, Germany, and Australia.
Arranged iftaar and sahri in the month of
Ramadan and Qurbani in Eid-ul-Adha for the
poor in many countries around the world.
Jointly with Ibrahim College launched a
new Umrah and fundraising project called
Makka Twin Peaks Challenge.
We need to remember, which is spent in
the way of Allah should be clean, pure and
halal (lawful). Spender should be good in
intentions and righteous in deeds. The one to
whom Sadaqah (charity) is given should also
be deserving of it. It should not be wasted
by spending on the non-deserving. That is
why Channel S Television gives high priority
to the transparency and accountability in
charity work.
The success of charities on Channel S can
only be truly attributed to the continuous
generosity of its viewers who have responded
to each and every call. Allah said:
But the righteous one will avoid Hellfire,
who gives from his wealth to purify himself.
(Surah Al-Layl 92:17-18)
And Allah said: Take from their wealth a
charity by which you cleanse them and purify
them, and invoke blessings upon them. (Surah
At-Tawbah 92:103)
When we give away our wealth in charity,
this removes worldliness from our hearts
and envy of what others have and it makes
us hope for our good deeds stored in the
Hereafter. Let us ask Allah to bless us with
the ability to reap maximum reward in this
holy month of Ramadan with the ability to
adorn the heart with spiritual virtues such
as generosity, compassion, benevolence,
humility, and asceticism. Ameen.

Brief History
Muslim Charity was established in 1999 with a group of volunteers and today we
are partners with United Nations (UNRWA). We have always taken initiatives with
a diverse range of projects which have been beneficial to communities around the
world. We do not just deliver our projects but work for the dignity of the communities,
and this commitment has been unshakable. To achieve our goals we have got a strong
network of partners, which are local organisations of the communities we work for.
Following this structure, we try and reach out at the root cause and try to mitigate it.
We work majorly for Maternal Health, Women Livelihood, Water, Orphans and last
but not the least, for the Street Children in Bangladesh.

Progress and Ongoing Activities

One of the most important and crucial ongoing projects of Muslim Charity in
Bangladesh are the "Street Children Project". We are rescuing children from the streets
and bringing them to a shelter, which we have established in Sadarghat, Dhaka. We
are giving these street children education, clothes, food, hygiene and sanitation and
a safe place to sleep to avoid them being abused or trafficked. We are also providing
them psychosocial treatment and trying to reunite them with their parents. We are
also sponsoring their education to secure them in the future. We want to give them
the chance that every child deserves.
Under Honouring Our Mothers campaign we are working for maternal health around
the globe. Besides having five established maternity hospitals in Pakistan, we are
providing incubators, ambulances, safe deliveries and Fistula treatment in various
parts of the world. In Bangladesh, we have recently supported and sponsored CMH
in Dhaka for heart surgeries for children born with heart problems. Besides that we
have joined hands with Friendship, a renowned organisation in Bangladesh, who
are running hospitals on ships around the coastal areas. We will be establishing safe
mother houses which will provide locals who do not have access to hospitals at all,
with initial treatment during their pregnancy. Furthermore, we will also be preparing a
pool of patients and inviting satellite clinics to these sites for treatment and surgeries
whenever they are needed.

Brief History
Eden Care and The Muslim Burial Fund is a young and energetic charity that supports
those reaching the end of their lives and those who are terminally ill. The charity also
provides financial support to those who are unable to meet funeral cost.
Our projects fall under the umbrella of '13 Rivers Trust', a charity which derives
its name from an old saying of first generation Bangladeshi immigrants who once
colloquially referred to crossing 7 Seas and 13 Rivers in order to migrate to Britain.
Today descendants of these early pioneers honour them by naming the charity after
this classical expression.

Progress and Ongoing Activities

Since its inception, the projects of 13 Rivers Trust have been growing from strength
to strength. The charity is a volunteer led organisation which aims to empower those
from ethnic minority backgrounds to excel in helping others who are less fortunate
with simple acts of kindness.
13 Rivers Trust charitable projects include:
Eden Care
The Muslim Burial Fund
Sylhet Aid
Emergency Relief
The combined projects of 13 Rivers Trust have raised thousands of pounds to support
funerals, provide befriending services to vulnerable members within society as well
as provide support to refugees in Europe and support disabled people in Sylhet,
Bangladesh.
We are currently appealing for burial support across the UK. The Muslim Burial Fund
aims to provide financial support to those who do not have the means to bury their
loved ones or who are new Muslims and have no other means to plan for their funeral.
Eden Care provides advocacy and befriending for vulnerable reaching the end of their
lives. Please support both of these noble causes.

Brief History
The Orphans Shelter Foundation has always worked in the field of socio-economic
welfare. Our aim is to provide food, shelter, education and other basic needs through
sponsorship and donations for orphans. We also aim to help the poor and needy, and
those in distress in times of natural calamities, and to establish income generating
projects for the poor.

Progress and Ongoing Activities

At present we have three orphanages that we are supporting. The largest is in
Laxmipur with over 150 orphans, the second is in Mathbaria with 36 orphans and the
third is in Sherpur with 15 orphans. Both orphanages at Mathbaria and Sherpur have
received Bangladesh Government NGO bureau approved registration for the next five
years.
We provide the orphans with accommodation, food, healthcare and education.
In addition, we take care of a number of students whose parents are in extreme
poverty, of these some are studying Hifz.
We are also supporting the poor and needy of these areas by providing rickshaws, vans
(non- motorised), sewing machines and distributing eid gifts.
In 2014, we were kindly donated land in Sylhet, where we have drawn up plans for a
major project to construct an Islamic centre that will comprise of a mosque, Madrasa
and orphanage. Construction at the Hazi Abdul Gafur Islamic Centre, in Lamua,
Moulvibazar, has now begun.

What we are appealing for

We are looking to begin construction work of our Islamic complex in Sylhet,
Moulvi Bazar and extend the orphanage accommodation buildings in Laxmipur and
Mathbaria, so that we may accommodate more orphans. At present we are having to
turn children away due to the lack of space.
We are appealing for sponsors of orphans, (including those studying hifz), poor
students and eid gifts for the needy of those areas.
We also need to modernise the learning environment of the Madrasah therefore we
need computer equipment, projectors and smart boards.

Dr Muhammad Abdul B
The blessed month of Ramadan,
aimed to build spirituality or
God-consciousness amongst
Muslims, is again with us. Behind the
basic rituals of fasting from dawn till
dusk lies the deeper spirit and
teachings of endurance and giving.
The agenda for this month is to
ensure we spend time in lifting
ourselves to spiritual heights
through transforming our life in
personal behaviour, dealings with
our near and dear ones as well as
with our neighbours and colleagues
in the wider society irrespective of
their background.
This is a great opportunity to build
better relationships, help one
another in virtue and keep away
from any evils that tempt us. The
curriculum for holy period is the
Quran, as Allah blessed humanity
by revealing it in this noble month.

18

AS A COMMUNITY OF
PURPOSE, IT IS OUR MAIN
TASK TO WAGE A WAR
AGAINST OUR COMMON
ENEMIES IGNORANCE,
FEAR AND INACTION. OUR
WORLD DESPERATELY
NEEDS A MESSAGE OF
HOPE TO HEAL OUR
FRACTURES AND FIGHT
FOR JUSTICE.

As Muslims go into a deep reflective

and consciousness mood, the
agenda should be to learn more and
build resilience so that one can
always remain God-conscious. It is
vital to ensure our fasting does not
end up in mere starvation and our
prayers simple exercise.
Our life in Ramadan must be
entirely balanced and meet our
physical, mental, emotional and
spiritual needs. Only then can we
feel the envelopment of Gods
limitless love within and around us.
I would venture to remind my
Muslim brothers and sisters of our
obligation towards people surround
us in Ramadan and beyond,
especially in our neighbourhoods,
work places and education
institutions. We all breathe the same
air and enjoy Allahs provision, we
have similar hopes and concerns for
our safety and security and we share
Ramadan LIVE 2016 | www.chsuk.tv

the same land as His slaves and stewards on our

beautiful planet. Our religion teaches us to be a
force for good to all.
It is vital we build bridges with other people,
proactively clarify misunderstandings and correct
myths about us. We are a relatively new and young
minority in Britain and we must connect with our
fellow citizens. We have little influence on changing
the negatives abroad - the despotic regimes, rise of
bloodthirsty groups or foreign invasion of Muslim
lands - but we can improve our standard and
dignity where we live. We can reach out to others,
the moral majority, get proactively involved in
broad based community organising and involve our
own youth to project our faith positively.
As a community of purpose, it is our main task to
wage a war against our common enemies
ignorance, fear and inaction. Our world desperately

needs a message of hope to heal our fractures

and fight for justice. We desperately need a
spiritual regeneration in a world much centred
on individual fulfilment, material wealth and
short-term gains. We need a strong moral
anchor to navigate through the complexities
and challenges of modern life. Ramadan is the
best time to prepare and practice all this.
As a people of faith we have a unilateral
obligation to work for the good of all. We have
the obligations of good-neighbourliness, of
being concerned for others, to share their joys
and feel their pains and to provide support and
help wherever we can. We have a religious
obligation to encourage all that is good and
discourage what is harmful, with a sense of
urgency but with patience and wisdom. Let
Ramadan fasting be a catalyst for us to become
the best community.

Brief History
The early Muslims settled in York over 40 years ago. They began their worship in a
house, but as the numbers grew, a Mosque and Islamic Centre (a branch of UK Islamic
Mission) was established in Bull Lane in 1982. Our numbers have grown significantly
and the existing facilities for up to four hundred worshippers are now insufficient.
Plans were approved by the York City Council in 2013 for Yorks first purpose-built
Mosque and Islamic Centre on the existing site. The mosque has featured nationally
and internationally through a number of initiatives such as inviting the EDL for Tea &
Biscuits in 2014 and protecting the homes of hundreds of citizens from flooding by
playing a leading role in the Boxing Day 2015 Floods. We look forward to continuing
our work towards promoting Islam as a peaceful, tolerant and inspirational religion for
future generations.

Progress and Ongoing Activities

Alhamdulillah we have raised over 900,000 to date which has enabled us to build a
watertight shell, complete with connectivity for gas, water, electricity and sewerage
works. Temporary heating and lighting will allow us hold jumuah prayers for all the
congregation on the first floor and inshaAllah we also plan to hold maghrib, isha and

Brief History
Al Quran Academy London is a UK based International Islamic Dawah charity set up
in 2010 with the mission of worldwide free Quran distribution. Through our various
distribution programmes and educational seminars, we endeavour to create Islamic
awareness by spreading the authentic word of Allah to help eradicate misconceptions
and superstitions about Islam that stem from a lack of knowledge.

Progress and Ongoing Activities

Alhamdulillah, Al Quran Academy London has already distributed nearly half a million
copies of the Holy Quran with simple Bengali translation in the Bengali speaking zone
of Bangladesh, India and expatriates in Europe, America, Canada, Australia, Malayasia
and Middle East. We have taken steps to extend our distribution of the Holy Quran
with English translation to countries across the western hemisphere and the Nepali
translation in Nepal. We are looking into the possibility of Hindi and Urdu translations
to include.
Alongside our existing projects such as our popular Friends of Quran scheme, we
have also devised an innovative project called LightHouse. This project allows our
donors (hailing from Bangladesh) to take responsibility for Quran distribution for their
own union (home town), thereby making the process faster and more personalised.
Alhamdulillah, this project has been very well received and gains popularity by the
day.
Al Quran Academy London distributes free Quran amongst GPA 5 achieving students,
public libraries, media, prisoners, intellectuals and various professionals around the
country.
The sponsorship cost of one copy of the Holy Quran is only 2. You can sponsor
2000 copies for your Union, or 500 copies for your parents, or however many you are
capable of sponsoring. We offer the option of printing the details of the donor/ person
or organisation of choice on the front page of the sponsored copies (minimum 100
copies).

BRieF HiSTORy
In 1993, a community in Nottingham, moved by the devastation of the Bosnian war,
sprang into action. A small group of volunteers began collecting money, clothes and
medicine for the people of Bosnia.
Muslim Hands, an international aid agency and NGO, grew from this grass roots
movement and since these first efforts, we have responded to countless more
emergencies, as well as establishing long term projects such as schools, healthcare
clinics and livelihood programmes worldwide. We are working in over 50 countries and
have field offices in over 30 of these. By working closely with our partners and offices
on the ground, we are able to distribute aid in an effective, efficient, transparent and
wholly accountable manner and to make a lasting difference to the communities we
work with.

Progress and Ongoing Activities

Dedicated to tackling the root causes of poverty around the world, Muslim Hands
is passionate about working beyond the provision of immediate relief, towards
supporting communities over the long-term. We are currently supporting education,
water, health and livelihood projects across four continents, as well as running a
dedicated orphan sponsorship scheme.

Ramadan

A Chance to Get
Closer to Allah (swt)
Shaikh Abu Sayed Ansarey
The best month in Islamic calendar is undoubtedly Ramadan, we cannot compare this
month with any others. Indeed Ramdhaan can be compared with itself just!

allah(swt) has not only

prescribed fasting in ramadan
rather He almighty has opened
all the doors of the blessings
in this holy month. However,
all praise and thanks be to
allah(swt) that He has granted
us such an amazing month
for this Ummah to learn selfrestraint through fasting as
allah(swt) says in the holy

to those before you, that you may

and jinn, the last testament, the
book of salvation, the holy quran.
the history says in this month allah

the transgressors, the battle of Badr
took place in it. Hence, we must

all the advantages of it through our

ramadan and the

significance of Fasting
if we read the following ahadith of the
messenger of allah(swt) then we will
realise how significant is ramadan and
how much we should value it,
narrated by abu Hurayrah (may allah
be pleased upon him) said that the
Prophet (PBUH) said: Whoever fasts in
the month of ramadan out of sincere
faith, and hoping for a reward from
allah, then all his previous sins will be

Brief History
Stepney Shahjalal Mosque was established around 1983 by the community elders
and youth in the corner of the Shandy Park in a Caretaker's Hut. Initially there were
facilities to accommodate approximately 40-50 worshippers. In late eighties due to
the increasing demand Tower Hamlets Council granted permission to extend prayer
facilities by installing a portable building. Since then further extensions were built
to accommodate increasing worshippers. By 2002 with the support of community
leaders and worshippers the land for the Mosque was purchased from Tower Hamlets
Council. In 2005 additional portable buildings were installed to accommodate
approximately 800 worshippers inside the Mosque, but approximately 500-700
worshippers still pray outside in the park every Jummah and Ramadan come rain
or shine. In 2010 full planning permission was granted to build a new Mosque large
enough to accommodate more than 3000 people.

Progress and Ongoing Activities

The Mosque is open for 5 times daily prayers, Jummah, 2 Eid prayers and Taraweeh in
Ramadan with separate prayer facilities for Women. Other activities include Children's
Evening Madrasha, Weekend Madrasha, Arabic language Classes for adults, Islamic
& Social Studies Classes for Women, Supplementary & Homework Support Classes,
Weekend Islamic & Social Studies Classes for all and various activities throughout the
year.

We are an independent non-governmental organisation (NGO) founded in the UK

Progress and Ongoing Activities

Some interesting facts
1. We are the largest International aid agency in Gaza. We are there, NOW.
2. We are accessing more areas than anyone else in war torn Yemen! More than any
Muslim or Non-Muslim charity.
3. We are operational in over 30 countries, so it costs less for us to deliver relief,
because we have a presence on the ground.
4. We go to areas that many charities wont, like in Baluchistan, Iraq, Yemen and
Helmand.
5. And we are deep inside Syria, at the heart of the conflict.
Weve helped over 6.5 million Syrians since the conflict began, providing over 140
million of vital relief.

The prophet (SAW) replied to a question:

Give (regular charity) out of your property,
for truly it is a purifier, and be kind to your
relatives and acknowledge the rights of the
poor, neighbours and (those in need who
seek your help).

We take your donations seriously. We know this is an Amaanah for which we are
accountable. So when we say we are on the ground, we mean it. Weve gained the
trust of organisations worldwide. This is important because we are able to multiply
your donations. Institutions, charitable trusts, governments, corporate enterprises are
all multiplying your donations!
In Pakistan, Bangladesh, Kenya, Yemen and Niger weve multiplied 4.5m that youve
donated into a staggering 9.5 Million! SubhanAllah!
And that means more people helped and more lives saved.
We couldnt do any of this without you and our wonderful community, so THANK
YOU and may Allah SWT reward you for your continued support.
Together, we are winning the fight against extreme poverty. SubhanAllah.

Tips Related to the First

Night of Ramadan
During the first night of Ramadan, Muslims all
around the world wait for the announcement
of the month. Start collecting reward from this
moment!

Try to look for the new moon with the family, make the little ones busy
with this. However, if the religious authority in your country announces the
beginning of Ramadan and you are still not able to see the new moon, you
should accept the decision without any fuss.

Send greetings to family members and friends. If you live in a non-Muslim

community, try to explain the significance of Ramadan to your neighbours.
It is important to explain to them that Ramadan is more than just abstaining
from eating and drinking.

3
4
5

Share the joy of Ramadan with your children. And dont refer to the night
of Eid! Kids should feel that the coming of Ramadan is a special event to
celebrate even if they do not fast it yet. Involve them in decorating the house,
making lamps using craft work etc.
Do not miss taraweeh: Many people miss the first taraweeh for different
reasons. Some say the first day of Ramadan starts after midnight, so they
dont attend the prayer, or between the joy and many phone calls, they get
exhausted and nod off and some may just forget it!
Keep niyyah:
The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: (The value of) an action depends on
the intention behind it. A man will be rewarded only for what he intended.
Narrated on the authority of Umar b. al-Khattab. [Bukhari].
Intention (niyyah) in Islam has immense importance. During the first night
of Ramadan, make a lot of good intentions which Allah will help you fulfill.
Examples:
Fasting for Allahs sake
To have a productive month
To attain inner peace
To forgive friends/ family members who have wronged you
To attend the night of Qadr and get its reward
That all efforts in the kitchen during Ramadan is to break the fast of
family members

Tips for the

Last Night of
Ramadan

Daily and Monthly Planning

Daily Planning
To make the most use of this blessed month, we should not pile tasks
on our schedule and wait till the appropriate minute to fulfill it!
Instead, we should allocate a time for each goal. In Ramadan, there
are blessed moments that we should not miss by focusing on other
tasks. For example, you cannot visit people during taraweeh, or
watch a religious program right after fajr when you are supposed to
do dhikr and read the Quran!

After all the effort of planning,

helping others, praying, fasting and
keeping good intentions, we will
reach the last night of Ramadan
desiring the great reward of being
saved from the fire and accepted in
heaven. It is important to trust Allah
that He will accept your hard work.
At the night of Eid, the joy is not only
because we are not supposed to
fast the next day! It is also because
we are labelled as heavens future
habitants In sha Allah!

Divide your day into

at least 6 parts

1 The morning suhoor, tahajjud, fajr, reciting Quran after fajr, istighfar
Remember fasting is not an excuse to be inefficient at work; neither does it
2 Work
justify being ill tempered because you miss your coffee or cigarette! Concentrate
on dhikr especially while waiting in traffic, while driving to and from work etc.

the best sheikh/ imam in the city. Choose a masjid that is in your neighbourhood!
This time depends on when you complete the Taraweeh prayers. (Family
6 Night
time, completing other tasks, Qiyam)
Keep each salah as a time interval between tasks, so you can pray at the masjid if
possible.
Intention for itikaaf (to stay in the masjid for a particular time period in the
worship of Allah while maintaining certain conditions)
Monthly Planning
Divide the month into three parts where each part consists of 10 days. This is an
efficient way to accomplish your schedule according to the spiritual importance of
the month.
Set the goals you want to accomplish in each of the 10 days. Write them in a
separate column. You could concentrate on social tasks in the first 10 days, family
tasks the following 10 days, dua and dhikr (personal spirituality) in the last ten
days. I do not mean to totally separate your tasks, but give you a rough time period
to focus on.
Start dividing these tasks and goals. If your lifestyle is organized with minimal
surprises, you can plan these 10 days in advance. If not, try and make a draft for 2
days. Making a draft makes you feel less guilty if something unexpected happens.
This does not mean you get out of your actual task but, you might need to double
the effort for the next 2 days. Place an X on completed tasks, to give you a sense of
accomplishment!
For the last 10 days of Ramadan, try to intensify all kinds of Ibadat, especially the
prayers of the night. You can pray to recover some prayers you may have missed
before.
Recite the whole Quran. In case you cannot read, listen to it and read the
translation juz by juz.
Aishah (Allah be pleased with her) reported: I asked: O Messenger of Allah! If I
realize Lailat-ul-Qadr (Night of Decree), what should I supplicate in it? He (Peace
be upon him) replied, You should supplicate: Allahumma innaka afuwwun,
tuhibbul-afwa, fafu anni (O Allah, You are Most Forgiving, and You love
forgiveness; so forgive me). [At-Tirmidhi]

Ask dua that Allah accepts all of your efforts

done in Ramadan, and that He supports you
to sustain your productivity after Ramadan
Share greetings for Eid
Give the kids the joy of Eid (new clothes,
money, decorating the house, gifts, going to
the park, making plans for the day of Eid)
Do not forget to pay Zakat al-Fitr, which
you can pay from the first day of Ramadan
till the last night of it. The sooner you pay it,
the better it would be for those who receive
it!
Do not forget the families with limited

income. Although you pay your Zakat al-Fitr,

you can still do a few more things which
wont cost much, but may make a huge
difference for others. Example: buying boxes
of sweets, Eid decorations for the house,
little toys or even plastic jewellery for the
little princesses of the family.

As soon as the authorities prove it to be the

end of Ramadan, start repeating the Takbir
and teach it to the young ones
These are some tips for Ramadan, please
share yours! I pray from the heart that Allah
accepts all of our good deeds and efforts
this Ramadan.

tracking and exploitation. They fend for themselves without any family or support from the outside world. Often
abandoned by their parents due to poverty or tracked into an unspeakable world where no child should ever be.
Muslim Charitys Street Children project, SETU, based in Dhaka, Bangladesh is a life line for these beautiful children.
With your kind donations we can rescue these children from the streets and provide them with love, care and protection
they deserve. Muslim Charity also works to provide basic education, medical care and focusses on their physical,
emotional, and psychological needs.
Please help us this Ramadan to reach out and save these souls from the anguish and terror they face everyday
on the streets of Dhaka.

Their childhood may have been lost but together we can provide an
opportunity to build a future with unimaginable possibilities.

WOW

Ramadan

for Parents & Guardians

How to Get Your Kids to Look Forward to and Love Ramadan?

Ramadan is nearly upon us In sha Allah, and for those of us who are parents, the month brings with
it a desire to imbibe a love and excitement in our children for fasting and the unique ibadah. In this
article are some tips and advice on how to prepare our children for Ramadan.
Unlike Muslim countries, where markets, streets, television
and the general population all foster a sense of connection to
Ramadan, parents who live in UK/Europe and Western countries
have the added challenge that there is little recognition of this
holy time outside of our homes and mosques? Muslim parents
complain about how hard it is when Christmas is a massive and
exciting public event, while Ramadan and Eid pass by mostly
unnoticed. Christmas, with its beautiful decorations, magical
themes and catchy tunes blaring over loud speakers in every
mall for weeks on end, can make Ramadan and Eid look dull
in comparison to children. Whilst it should not be viewed as a
competition, as parents we have a duty and responsibility to make
all religious obligations meaningful and, as much as possible,
enjoyable for our children.
We say this with limited craft skills: not able to use sewing
machines, nor own a hot glue gun, and there is no such thing as
a craft cupboard at our homes. Were also busy like so many of
you with work and volunteering and the demands of family. You
simply need an enthusiastic mind and a heart that desires iman
for your child.
The following ideas are things have come about over the years for
our own children and for the children of our Saturday/Weekend
Islamic School or madrasah. They are very basic, and generally
you can get the kids to do it themselves. They are also often
designed for the whole family to be involved, as it is in doing so
that memories are made, family traditions are started, lessons are
taught, and faith is sewn.

1) Buy decorations

Decorations remind everyone who enters the home that

this is a special time. Choose something to enjoy for a whole
month (not deflating balloons!). You could purchase a range of
colourful Chinese paper lanterns from the local discount store
(Pound shops) and hang them up in the living room. They are
cheap, looked great, and are not the kind of decorations kids
automatically associate with other celebrations (i.e. tinsel for
Christmas or balloons and streamers for birthdays). You can
cover windows with Ramadan messages and drawings made with
coloured window chalk, and have a special scented candle you

Page

light every night at Maghrib in Ramadan that changes colour

every few minutes. You know best what decorations will make
your family happy, so go for it! Get everyone to help you decorate
a day or two before the month starts, while blasting Ramadan
anasheed/Islamic songs and entertainment.

2) Start a Ramadan calendar

Marking off the days of Ramadan is a lot of fun for kids. A simple
calendar for children (felt pieces glued on to a black board) with
little pockets. Put a note with either a sweet or a date
for
the kids reflecting your childrens age.
If they are very small,
the notes can just say
things like Allah loves
you so much! and In
Ramadan, adult Muslims
dont eat or drink anything
from before sunrise until
sunset! As they grew
older, put more advanced
lessons or Quran verses. If
you have guests, ensure there
are enough sweets or dates in
the pocket for every child who
visits. The children should not
be allowed to get the note or
sweet until Maghrib time, as this
helped create a sense
of excitement for this time of day, even when they are too young
to be fasting. If youre not keen on making your own calendar, you
can buy beautiful handmade silk and wool calendars or even just
print ones for free from online, and cross off the days as you go.

3) Plan Ramadan goals

We all need a plan for Ramadan, otherwise its easy for the month
to whiz by without much change in us other than increasing
bad breath (and increasing in body weight!). Kids should be
encouraged to have goals, too! As parents, its important that we
explain to kids why Ramadan goals matter, and the importance
and reward of extra ibadah in this month.
For very little children, have them make three goals for the whole

month; any more

than that is just too
much for little ones.
the goals can be
things like learn a
new dua, memorise
three new surahs,
fast for two hours
once a week, or help
mummy everyday.
Slightly older children
can benefit from more
structure, and for that
age you can create a 30page notepad to check
off each day. this visual
reminder gives them
ideas of things to do each day when they often forget and also
provides the satisfaction of not just ticking things off at the end of
each day but reviewing all they achieved at the end of the month.
a page from the notepad looks something like this:
on the other hand, teenagers can benefit from a ramadan diary:
buy them a funky notebook or get a plain one and allow them to
decorate it themselves. tell them its for them to record not just
their goals at the start, but their feelings, thoughts and prayers
to allah as the month continues. You can check them to see that
they are writing in them regularly, but never read specifics (only
generally flick through the pages), as privacy is important at this
age.

the added benefit of your children actively participating in dawah

(inviting to allah and islam) and teaching others about islam.

Baking for others

Kids often want to share about ramadan with their non-muslim

teachers, neighbours, friends or family members but dont know
how. We make cookies each year (or to make it even easier, you
can buy plain round sweet cookies and decorate them with icing
and sweets), put them in clear little bags and attach a little note
about ramadan with string or ribbon (be sure to list ingredients
on the back of the note in case of allergies). then we deliver them
with a smile!

spread the joy of reading

if your children attend a state school, donating good quality

books about ramadan is a lovely way to ensure the correct
image of and information about islam, muslim and this time of
year is available in the school to any teacher or child who may
want to know more about ramadan. School libraries are always
grateful for donations of good books! Books such as my First
ramadan and rashads ramadan and eid al Fitr are great for
very little children. Books such as ramadan moon, Under the
ramadan moon, and a Party in ramadan are good for older
children. even if your children attend an islamic school or are
homeschooled, why not consider donating a good book about
ramadan to your local library for the benefit of everyone?
Why not also leave a collection of nice ramadan books out at
home for my own kids to peruse throughout the month.

the sadaqah box (for Big@Heart - channel S Kids

fundraising challenge)
get a big large box (also use our Big@Heart fundraising challenge
cut out money box and envelop) and have the kids decorate a sign
for it that says sadaqah box. throughout the month, encourage
everyone in the family to put both money and food donations in
the box. do the kids have good quality toys they would be willing
to part with to go to a charity shop? Praise kids when they add
to the box, and ensure they see you putting things in the box too.
as a family, decide where you will donate the money and food,
and be sure to take it before eid so the recipients can enjoy the
donation on eid.

5) get crafty!

Keep any goals the kids have somewhere close to where your
family eats or prays, and be sure parents and any elders who live
at home have somewhere to write their goals too. remind and
encourage each other as the month progresses, and be sure to
warmly praise children as they achieve or maintain ramadan
goals.

4) get the kids to give sadaqah

teaching your children about sadaqah during ramadan is one of

the best ways to implement this trait in them from an early age,
as they learn the importance of charity and the need to share
with those who have less than they do. giving in charity does not
just have to be raising money for charities, but can be as simple
and sincere as sharing iftar food with your neighbours. this has

crafts are a fantastic way for your children to get excited for
ramadan; it allows them to express their creativity, learn and get
messy at the same time! Have a look at my ideas for different
ramadan crafts for your children and get the whole family
involved.

ramadan placemats

these can easily become a ramadan tradition! they are easy

to make and a great way to help kids learn the iftar and suhoor
dua. Print out the dua on a4 paper (good to do arabic, arabic
transliteration and english), then let them decorate it to their
hearts content. Laminate to seal everything and they will last
for years (older children and teens love to see the cute pictures
they drew on their ramadan placemats all those years ago). if
you do not have access to a laminator, you can use long pieces of
sellotape to cover the decorated page entirely a great and cheap
alternative to lamination! another idea is to make them from felt,
with a little pocket on one side for cutlery, and another pocket on
the other side to slip in dua cards. Kids can decorate them with

Page

47

coloured felt shapes, and the mats can be gently washed when
they get dirty.

good deed jars

We all want to do good deeds in ramadan, but sometimes it

can be hard to know what to do, especially for kids. good deed
activities are a great way to remind everyone about the need to
keep aiming to do good deeds. it can be as simple as a bowl in
the middle of the dining table with folded-up notes of good deed
suggestions, or as fancy as a good deed tree (nothing to do with
christmas trees).
gather as a family and write down a big collection of good deeds
that everyone in the family can manage: learning a new portion of
quran, helping an elderly neighbour or family member, praying
two extra rakahs etc. everyone in the family takes a good deed
from the bowl each day and completes it, and chats about their
experience over iftar; what they found fun or hard or interesting
about doing it. doing this will help children realise that their
parents do good deeds regularly, because often as parents we
forget the need to consciously model such behaviour for our
kids. it also teaches them that struggling with doing good is both
normal and acceptable, and allows parents to model how they
deal with these situations without giving up.

alhamdulillah chart

this is a lovely family activity to do in ramadan that beautifully

introduces young children to the idea of dhikr.
Write this ramadan, we say alhamdulillah for on the top
of an a3-sized poster paper which is put up near to where the
family gathers to eat or pray. Leave a stack of coloured sticky
notes and markers next to the poster, so each person in the family
can write at least one thing they are grateful for, every day of
ramadan. it can be as important as their life, family or faith, or
as small and funny as chocolate, coffee, or tickles! encourage
visitors to contribute too. at the end of the month, your poster
will be covered in sticky notes and your family will have not just a
gorgeous record of gratitude to allah, but a tangible proof of the
abundant blessings in their life (you can even take a family picture
with that for memory).

Date jar gift

this is a fun activity to do with

kids after teaching them about
the sunnah of breaking ones
fast with dates and the reward
of helping someone else to
break their fast.

Have children count 30 dates

into a jar, and then attach a
chalkboard label and piece
of chalk with string for the
recipient to count down the
days till eid. if ramadan is only
29/30 days, the recipient can
use the remaining date to fulfil
the sunnah of eating a date
on eid morning! Your children
can create these jars to give to
friends and family at the beginning of ramadan.

itikaf tent

Why not introduce children to the idea of itikaf in ramadan while

they are still small in a fun and special way. they are too young
to do a proper itikaf in the masjid, so you can purchase a tent
(Stores such as ikea and others) and decorate it with tiny lights
and stars on strings and leave it in
the living room for
the whole month.
You can tell the
children it was their
own special place (no
grown-ups allowed!)
for thinking and
dreaming and praying
in ramadan.
inside the tent you
can place child-sized
prayer mats, prayer
beads, mushafs on
stands, picture books
about ramadan and the
prophets, quranic stories
for children, and their
ramadan notebooks.
they could go in and out of
the tent whenever they wanted, but it wasnt a place for playing
angry Birds on the iPad! this allows them to get used to the idea
of a place of retreat that was only for their time with allah, even
if they just laid on their backs and daydreamed about life and the
universe while they were there.
there are many more amazing ideas available online for ways
to make your ramadan special for your kids (Pinterest is a great
place to start). choose what works for you and your family and
makes you feel excited and happy; it should not feel like another
burden or hassle in your life. dont feel overwhelmed, and keep in
mind that teaching and sharing all these things with your children,
with the right intention, is ibadah for you.
Finally, remember that your children dont care about crafty
perfection in these things, but will care about the warm feelings
you nurtured in them towards ramadan and their faith. may your
ramadan be full of blessings, happiness and sakeenah. ameen!
