Running head: SUMMARY AND REFLECTION 5

Summary
This paper focuses on the use and integration of Information and communication
technologies (ICTs) in the classroom. Many students in society today already use
multiple methods of communication while using technologies. Due to the increased use
of technologies, students have now become more knowledgeable about literacy and
communication at a younger age. However, although students have become more
proficient in their communication, their communication skills must continue to be
developed to help them become considerate and effective communicators.
To demonstrate how ICTs can be implemented, while also guiding and developing
a students communication skills, Redmond, observed the methods of Maya and how he
used technology to develop the use of ICTs. Maya used five steps for the development of
his students technological and literacy sills. These steps include engage, explore, explain,
elaborate, and evaluate. Maya engaged his students by encouraging the use of their cell
phones to scan a code where they could begin their exploration into the Rocket Boys
characters which was necessary for their assignment. By first engaging his students he
could then guide his class to the following steps, which not only guide but also encourage
self-motivated learning as students take responsibility for their own work and research.
The use of technology and research in the classroom, through multiple media
forums can present innovative learning opportunities for students to develop a sense of
responsibility while using ICTs. As demonstrated with Mayas group of students, it is
evident that effective learning can take place with the use of technology.

Reflection

Running head: SUMMARY AND REFLECTION 5

I believe technology, if used appropriately, can impact the teaching and learning,
which takes place in a classroom. In this article I found that although Maya could see the
potential of ICTs in the classroom, he first formulated a series of steps, which would
effectively guide and develop students literacy, cognitive and problem solving skills. By
encouraging students to use their devices as a tool rather than taking the distraction
away he ultimately empowered his students to take ownership of their learning.
I believe that by encouraging the use of technology students will become
developers of their own knowledge. However, like Maya, teachers must develop a well
thought out plan that outlines how technology can be used productively in the classroom
setting. By giving students a set of guidelines, teachers can help enhance communication
and literacy skills student have already developed through the use of technology.
