SIADH and Diabetes Insipidus Medications

Diabetes Insipidus Drugs


DIe ADH no ADH or not enough ADH in the body, causing polyuria and
fluid volume excess.

Cranial- when there is a shortage of ADH in the body.


Nephrogenic- when the kidneys do not respond to ADH.

Vasopressin
Causes vasoconstriction and acts as an
antidiuretic to make up for less ADH in
the body.
Desmopressin (DDAVP)
Stops kidneys from producing urine
when the bodys water level is low;
stronger than the bodys natural ADH.
*Watch for opposites when administering:
output (<30mL/hr)*

IV bolus or IM injection

Nasal spray (Desmospray), tablet,


injection
hypovolemia, hyponatremia, low urinary

SIADH Drugs
Si ADH mas ADH more than enough ADH in the body, causing low urine
output, hyponatremia (in relation to concentration), and hypervolemia.
Demeclocycline (Declomycin)
Reduces the response of the collecting
tubules to ADH.
Lithium (Lithium Carbonate)
Blocks renal response to ADH
Furosemide (Lasix)
Diuretic; increases excretion from
kidneys. Use only if sodium is at least
125 mEq/L

Capsule, tablet

Capsule, sustained release tablet


Tablet, oral solution, IV, IM injection

*May cause drug-induced DI; may take weeks to see results; monitor for signs of

hyponatremia*
