Topic: Area
Year Level: Year Seven
Learning Area: Maths
Strand: Measurement and Geometry
Duration: Six lessons

Stage 1: Identify Desired Results

What is worth knowing
Relevant links to the Year Seven Achievement Standard:

Students use forumlas for the area and perimeter of rectangles.

Historical Knowledge and Understandings

After engaging with this unit students will:

Understand:
There are different forumlas to find the area of squares, rectangles,
parallelograms, triangles and trapezoids.
Know:
To find the area of a square the formula is B x H
To find the area of a rectangle the formula is B x H
To find the area of a parallelogram the formula is B x H
To find the area of a triangle the formula is B x H
To find the area of a trapezoid the formula is (B1 + B2) x H 2

Historical Skills
After engaging with this unit students will:
Be able to:
Find the area of squares, rectangles, parallelograms, triangles and
trapezoids using established formulas.
Use the established formulas in problem solving.

Stage 2- Determine Acceptable Evidence

Evidence that will show what students know, understand and
can do
Assessment Tasks and Tools
Students will be given opportunities to demonstrate their knowledge, skills and
understanding through a range of assessments, including formative and
summative.
Formative Assessment
Observations
Classroom discussions
Questioning
Practice test sheets

Tasks to consolidate learning
Summative Assessment task
Students will be provided with two summative assessment tasks, the first
will assess their ability to use established formulas to find the area of a
variety of shapes and the second will assess their ability to use the
established formulas in problem solving scenarios.

Stage 3- Plan Learning Experiences and Instruction

Learning experiences which will enable students to achieve
the desired result
Learning Experiences

Lesson One
Introduce the topic of Area to students through a created powerpoint
Inform them that during the topic they will be learning the established
areas for squares, rectangles, parallelograms, triangles and trapezoids and
then they will use these formulas to help them solve problems.
Explain to students the effectiveness of using formulas
Introduce the area for squares, rectangles and parallelograms
Ask students how these three formulas are connected to help them realise
that all three are the same
Hand out created formula book for students and explain that this booklet
will act as a guide for them throughout the unit
Students then answer the example questions in the booklet and also from
the powerpoint
Go over more difficult questions with students as a whole class and then
students individually have a go
Mark all questions as a class to assess for understanding and to talk about
the process used to get to the answer
Lesson Two
Review of previous lesson
Introduce the formula to find the area of a triangle using the powerpoint
Students complete practice questions in their booklet and then from the
powerpoint
Mark questions as a class to assess for understanding and to talk about
the process used to get to the answer
Introduce the formula to find the area of a trapezoid
Students complete practice questions in their booklet and then from the
powerpoint
Mark questions as a class to assess for understanding and to talk about
the process used to get to the answer
Lesson Three
Review of previous lessons
Students work in pairs and use their formula booklets to answer a variety
of area questions on Practice A and Practice B question sheets
I will work with a small group of students who need further assistance
Mark questions as a class to assess for understanding and to talk about

the process used to get to the answer

Lesson Four
Review of previous lessons
Students complete Rocco the Robot task, which provides them with an
engaging activity to practice their skills in finding the areas of a variety of
shapes
Mark as a class and discuss differing results
Lesson Five
Review of previous lessons
Students complete the Lets get real problem solving sheet under test
conditions as a summative assessment.
This assessment will assess students ability to transfer their area formula
knowledge into problem solving situations.
I will mark students sheets and record their results.
Lesson Six
Students complete Quiz A and Quiz B under test conditions that will be a
final assessment of their knowledge over the unit.
I will mark students tests and record their results, their results will be
combined with their problem solving score.
