First ever advert (1941) about bulova watches, it aired for 10 seconds on
American TV and was a still shot of what you see above with narration.

The first countries to start making TV Ads

1941- The first television advertisement was broadcast in the
United States on July 1, 1941. The watchmaker Bulova paid $9 for
a placement on New York station WNBT.
1955 - The first TV ad broadcast in the UK was on ITV on 21
September 1955,advertising Gibbs SR toothpaste.
1960 - The first TV Ad broadcast in the Philippines was on ABSCBN in 1960,advertising Tide detergent powder. Until the early
1990s, advertising on television had only been affordable for
large companies willing to make a significant investment, but the
advent of desktop video allowed many small and local businesses
to produce television ads for airing on local cable TV services.
1960- this way of doing things became a staple in the television
advertising industry and has remains so to this very day.

The first colour TV advert made in (1969). This would attract the audience
because the advertiser could use a range of different colours and lighting
techniques to attract the audience.

What is the purpose of TV Advertising

The main reasons for TV advertising is:
The first reason is to make a profit and to
cover the costs of shows being aired.
TV has now been noticed for being a
success for companies to promote their
products and raise awareness.
Adverts are also used to raise awareness
to people e.g. a water aid advert.

This colour advert of McDonald's would nowadays be seen as scary

because of the over exaggerated clown make up, from 1970 till now a lot
has changed in terms of what is on TV and how they are represented

This advert from the 1970s shows blatant sexism, this would not be a
norm nowadays as women have many more rights than they did in the
70s, many more women are going into high paying jobs. The women in
this advert is seen as a maid, a server and basically your everyday
housewife. People nowadays would say this advert is very outdated.

This Andrex advert which has used CGI effects to create a fake dog, the
use of cgi was a big step in the world of television because surreal things
can now happen within adverts and TV, this was a big step in adverts
because before this adverts could have been a bit boring to some people.

Adverts can be used to raise

awareness to first world problems
such as, poverty, famine and
starvation.

In television nowadays celebrity's will do adverts because they are

big faces in the world and they will get money for showing their
faces, also with different celebrity's they will attract different
audiences, e.g. if one direction did an advert it would attract young
girls and the product there advertising will sell more.
