Prlogo
El inters por nuestros antepasados, entendiendo por
antepasados a toda la humanidad y no slo a aquellos que
vivieron y murieron en el territorio donde tenemos nuestras
races, probablemente ha acompaado el viaje de nuestra
especie. Con respecto al estudio de las enfermedades que
afectaron a las poblaciones del pasado, el crdito corresponde
al primer paleopatlogo de origen suizo Flix Plato (15361614) y, desde entonces, el conocimiento de la salud y la
enfermedad ha evolucionado significativamente. En esta
disciplina centenaria siempre se articularon evidencias
antiguas del esqueleto y las metodologas avanzadas,
adaptadas en su mayora de la clnica. Por otro lado, nunca
hubo tantos vestigios disponibles para el anlisis y nunca
estuvimos tan en riesgo de perderlos.
La Paleopatologa se expandi por los cuatro rincones
del mundo y entr en este milenio con las mejores
herramientas, lo que al contrario de lo que se podra suponer,
plantea, felizmente, todava ms dudas. Tenemos el privilegio
de vivir en una era de intercambio de conocimientos, hecho
posible gracias a internet y al "portable document format,
que hace unas dcadas pertenecan al dominio de la ciencia
ficcin. Consecuentemente, existe una gran actividad
editorial a nivel mundial. En este contexto, la decisin de
escribir un libro sobre estas temticas implica una enorme
responsabilidad. Y la obra que tenemos en nuestras manos
responde plenamente a este desafo, reflexionando sobre los
avances y la bsqueda de nuevas e importantes direcciones
conducentes al progreso de la paleopatologa, conseguidos a
travs de un ejercicio de sntesis logrado en este trabajo.
Eclctico en las fuentes, trata a la salud y la enfermedad bajo
diferentes perspectivas, integrando al ser humano en su

La luz de la evolucin
Los estudios epidemiolgicos realizados a lo largo del
siglo XX dan muestra de la naturaleza altamente compleja y
dinmica de la salud de las poblaciones humanas, revelando
que las enfermedades afectan a las poblaciones de manera
heterognea a lo largo del tiempo y en diferentes lugares. Son
numerosos los ejemplos que hoy sealan que los problemas
de salud de los habitantes de los pases en desarrollo (antes
llamado tercer mundo) no son los mismos que los de los
pases desarrollados, por un gran nmero de motivos no slo
biolgicos sino polticos, econmicos, culturales e histricos,
cuyo anlisis excede los objetivos de este libro. Y aun dentro
de cada uno de esos pases la salud no es un fenmeno
homogneo, sino que frecuentemente se identifican
subpoblaciones con problemas particulares y muy diferentes
entre s.
Pero al mismo tiempo, y a pesar de particularidades
locales, los procesos de salud y enfermedad comparten
caractersticas comunes, como son su capacidad de
adaptacin y sus cambios evolutivos. Como dijo Theodosius
Dobzhansky (1973:129) "Vista a la luz de la evolucin,
la biologa es, quizs, la ciencia intelectualmente ms
satisfactoria e inspiradora. Sin esa luz, se convierte en un
montn de hechos varios, algunos de ellos interesantes o
curiosos, pero sin formar ninguna visin conjunta". En este
sentido, considerar la salud aisladamente como un fenmeno
biolgico sin una perspectiva evolutiva y slo como un hecho
actual ha llevado a graves errores en el pasado, y ejemplos de
esta visin abundan en la historia reciente. Hace poco ms de
cincuenta aos la mayor parte de la comunidad mdica y la
sociedad en general haban generado, errneamente por
cierto, amplias expectativas acerca de la virtual erradicacin
de las enfermedades infecciosas en manos de los antibiticos
y las vacunas (e.g., Andrews y Langmuir 1963). Algunas de
ellas fueron en efecto erradicadas, como la viruela (Bazin

Diagnstico diferencial
Uno de los grandes desafos metodolgicos en torno
al estudio de patologas en restos arqueolgicos se relaciona
con las dificultades que implica el diagnstico diferencial.
Como comentamos, las respuestas biolgicas de los tejidos
seos son limitadas frente a la vasta cantidad de patologas
que posiblemente puedan afectar el sistema esqueletal.
Concretamente, los tejidos seos responden slo de dos
maneras a los daos patolgicos: 1) la formacin de nuevo
hueso, u osteosntesis; y 2) la destruccin del tejido existente,
u ostelisis (una descripcin detallada de estos procesos de
manera accesible y orientada al anlisis paleopatolgico
puede ser encontrada en Ortner 2003). Por lo tanto, distintas
patologas pueden provocar lesiones seas similares, en
muchos casos difciles de diferenciar y en otros imposibles,
lo que implica una fuente de equifinalidad, como planteamos
en el captulo 3. Esta respuesta limitada de las reacciones de

Paleodemografa
En muchos casos las estimaciones de la edad y las
determinaciones sexuales de los individuos son empleadas
para proponer perfiles de la estructura demogrfica de las
poblaciones de las cuales provienen, a travs de la
construccin de tablas de vida, perfiles de edad y curvas de
supervivencia. Mediante el uso de esta informacin, la
paleodemografa considera el tamao, la estructura y la
dinmica de las poblaciones antiguas (Chamberlain 2001), las
cuales pueden resultar de gran utilidad, y en algunos casos
imprescindibles, para interpretar el impacto de las evidencias
arqueolgicas de la salud y la enfermedad (Roberts y
Manchester 2005).
Este tipo de anlisis recibi hace algunas dcadas
importantes crticas (una revisin histrica detallada de la
evolucin y estado actual de la paleodemografa puede ser
consultada en Milner et al. 2008). Las principales objeciones
fueron basadas fundamentalmente en los problemas
asociados a la estacionalidad de las poblaciones de las cuales
derivan las series esqueletales, posteriormente profundizados
por Wood et al. 1992, y en la imposibilidad de detectar
episodios de mayor prevalencia de enfermedades en series
esqueletales que abarcan perodos mayores de tiempo que las
de, por ejemplo, un episodio de epidemia (Waldron 1994). A
esto se suman los problemas de exactitud atribuidos a los
mtodos de estimacin de la edad, que introducen sesgos en
los anlisis. Sobre este ltimo punto, se argument que los
mtodos de estimacin de la edad reproducen el perfil de
mortalidad de la muestra a partir de la cual fueron
construidos sobre la muestra en la cual se aplican. Estas
crticas, iniciadas por Bocquet-Appel y Masset (1982) en su
trabajo
Farewell in Paleodemography, proponan
inicialmente la imposibilidad de llevar adelante anlisis
paleodemogrficos. Sin embargo, posteriormente esta visin

Estudios paleogenticos
Durante las pasadas dcadas se ha producido un
notable auge de la biologa molecular, con increbles
aplicaciones a una amplia gama de campos de la
investigacin, y por supuesto la paleopatologa no escap a
su influencia. Pocos aos despus del desarrollo de Reaccin
en Cadena de la Polimerasa (Polymerase Chain Reaction o
PCR) en 1986 (Bartlett y Stirling 2003), esta tcnica de
amplificacin del ADN fue utilizada para la identificacin de

Cruzada de conocimientos
Tanto los abordajes diagnsticos como bioculturales
en
paleopatologa
(Mays
2012a)
han
sufrido
transformaciones durante las ltimas dcadas. Los primeros
incorporando conocimiento terico, metodolgico y tcnico
principalmente provenientes de las investigaciones clnicas,
de una manera amplia y crtica, que han permitido alcanzar
mayores grados de discusin en los diagnsticos. Los
abordajes bioculturales, por su parte, enfatizaron la
interaccin de distintas lneas de evidencia, algunos de los
cuales desarrollamos en este captulo.
Cada una de las reas de investigacin mencionadas
representa
enormes
oportunidades
de
incorporar
conocimiento al estudio de restos arqueolgicos con el fin de
investigar la salud de las poblaciones del pasado. Algunas de
ellas ofrecen informacin paleopatolgica directa, mientras
otras brindan fuentes de evidencia complementaria, aunque
no por eso de menor relevancia. El empleo de muchas de
estas metodologas se ha incrementado durante los ltimos
aos. En primer lugar probablemente porque permiten
acceder a cuestionamientos de rangos ms amplios y
abarcativos
que
los
mtodos
bioarqueolgicos
convencionales, y en segundo lugar porque los abordajes
interdisciplinarios o sobre metodologas con escasa o
novedosa aplicacin no slo permiten alcanzar discusiones
ms fructferas sino que pueden ser ms atractivos al
momento de solicitar financiamiento.
Las reas de investigacin expuestas aqu, adems de
las enormes ventajas que ofrecen, presentan distintos tipos de
dificultades, ya sean tericas o metodolgicas. Una postura

Tafonoma y paleopatologa
En gran medida, los objetivos de investigacin y las
inferencias paleopatolgicas estn condicionados por las
caractersticas de los restos humanos que sean analizados.
Entre estas caractersticas no slo se encuentra el tamao de
la muestra, sino tambin la representacin de los sexos y
grupos etarios, las condiciones de preservacin de los
elementos, y la informacin asociada a los restos
esqueletales, principalmente aquella relacionada con los datos
de excavacin, los cuales muchas veces no pueden ser
obtenidos si no fueron registrados correctamente o
recuperados una vez que han sido destruidos o extraviados.
Como destacamos en captulos anteriores, tanto por las
condiciones de preservacin postmortem como por la
influencia de factores socioculturales, las colecciones y
muestras esqueletales no son biolgicamente representativas
de las poblaciones de las cuales derivan. Debido al primero
de estos casos, la informacin generada acerca de los
ecosistemas y organismos del pasado en general est
controlada en gran medida por nuestra comprensin de los
factores que actan para conformar los registros biolgicos,
entre los cuales los procesos tafonmicos juegan un papel
central (Behrensmeyer y Hook 1992).

Informacin zooarqueolgica
Una
parte
importante
de
los
estudios
zooarqueolgicos brindan informacin acerca de los mtodos
de caza, procesamiento y consumo de las presas. Las
investigaciones acerca de la disponibilidad de recursos
faunsticos, las prcticas de consumo de partes animales y sus
caractersticas nutricionales, como contenido proteico y de
grasas, resultan de gran utilidad potencial en las
interpretaciones de la salud, en particular en las discusiones
acerca de situaciones de escasez de recursos y su relacin con
el desarrollo de estrs nutricional y de patologas metablicas
asociadas a la deficiencia de nutrientes.
A su vez, las metodologas de faenamiento, manejo,
tcnicas de coccin y almacenamiento de los productos
alimenticios, vinculadas a los estilos de vida, las tecnologas
disponibles y las caractersticas sociales de las poblaciones,
pueden condicionar el contacto con diferentes tipos de
patgenos procedentes de las presas (Gifford-Gonzalez
1993), que pueden ser ingeridos con la dieta y ser causantes
de patologas infecciosas.
La incorporacin de estudios zooarqueolgicos a las
interpretaciones de la salud permite evaluar el rol de la fauna
en la dieta y actividades de las poblaciones humanas y su
participacin como vectores de enfermedades infecciosas
zoonticas, es decir aquellas que son adquiridas por el
hombre a partir de otras especies animales. Actualmente son
reconocidas una gran variedad de patologas zoonticas,
contradas no slo a partir de la dieta sino tambin como
consecuencia de la cohabitacin de los espacios ecolgicos
con otras especies, incluyendo la domesticacin. Evidencias
ms o menos claras de este tipo de relaciones patolgicas han
sido descriptas en poblaciones antiguas, como tuberculosis
(Roberts y Buikstra 2003), chagas (Aufderheide et al. 2004;

Mtodos zooarqueolgicos
La zooarqueologa ha desarrollado una gran variedad
de criterios metodolgicos que permiten, por un lado,
detectar, registrar e interpretar los rastros de agentes
tafonmicos que actuaron sobre restos esqueletales, y por
otro lograr la identificacin de patrones de preservacin
diferencial que aportan informacin acerca de los procesos
formadores de sitios arqueolgicos.
Acerca de los primeros, la identificacin de
alteraciones qumicas, como las manchas de manganeso y
carbonato de calcio, que permiten trazar historias
tafonmicas de los restos; el reconocimiento de marcas de
cortes, que posibilitan detectar prcticas mortuorias, como
entierros secundarios o canibalismo; las huellas de carroeo,
que sugieren momentos en los cuales los restos fueron
depositados o redepositados, slo por mencionar algunos
ejemplos, otorgan informacin en muchos casos
indispensable para la interpretacin de la historia
