SPORTS COMPLEX FOR DIFFERENTLY-ABLED

In any part of the world, there has been a stigma associated with anyone
using wheelchair or being accompanied by a cane. These people, who are
much known in the society as people with disability, are frequently
categorized as futile and incapable.

And are facing different kinds of problems from their surroundings :- lacks family support
- lacks social support
- lacks government support
- mental problem
- space accessible problem (architectural barriers)

Since these people are considered to be incapable and not meant to be

useful for the society, people with disabilities doesnt get their required
status in the society.

Because of this approach of other people, people with disability tend to

develop a negative outlook and lose their sense of worth .

This will going to effect:- create large social-gap between abled and disabled person
- loss confidence in them
- loss of self esteem
- feels loneliness from the family and community
- psychological problems etc.

But these problems were seen seriously by some of the developed

countries and had taken necessary steps to solve the issues.
- through modifying laws
- providing rehabilitation centers
- community awareness
- proving recreational centers
- education
- providing barrier free design
- conducting competitions
- conducting Paralympic, deaf Olympic etc.

Participation in sport has identified to be one of the way in which they can
demonstrate their place in the world.

Not only for differently abled people, for abled people also the sports plays
an important role in their life.

Benefits of sports :- they help people to be healthy and be fit

- pride for a nation
- huge market for countries economy
- mental fitness
- strengthens social connection etc.

So the sports has benefits for all, abled and also for disabled.

There are different organizations promoting sports for differently abled in

the world wide through conducting Inter national level sports competition.

These inter national competitions are pride for the nations through winning
medals. And India has also differently abled athletes participating in
international competitions and have won many medals also.
But our country India doesnt support them as much as their contribution to
the nations pride.

they were not getting proper training

lack sports equipment
lacks sports education
lacks space for training
lacks support from government, society and family

So this is high time to recognize their needs and provide them a space,
where all these facilities can be provided and can be a solution for their
problem. Through a sports complex we can get rid off these issues.

Being able to take part in sports can change what the society think and feel
about them and also change what they think and feel about themselves.

Aim

Indian team of differently abled are participating in the international levels

but they lacks intended facilities for adaptive sports in the country. . There
has to be an adaptive sports center that takes the accessibility and safety
of differently-abled person as the major concern.

So aim of the project is to design a sports complex for the differently-abled

person.

Objective

To study the census data of differently abled in India, state wise and district
wise and identification of site.

Identification of different amenities required for the differently abled sports

complex.

Identification of different types of games played by the movement disabled

people.

To Study the design and guidelines for the space planning for the
differently abled.

Need for the project

The creation of a suitable venue for differently-abled athletes to practice and

train is really essential because the Indian athletes have already been competing
in the international Paralympic games and this complex can help them excel in
those competitions and bring pride and recognition to the Indians. The
community recognition helps them in attaining benefits from the government.

Building sports complex for differently-abled can also attract more differentlyabled athletes who can contribute to the development of the Indian athletic team.

This project also supports the community of differently-abled persons to have

better opportunity for sports and leisure. This can help them attain self esteem
and confidence.

Conducting games with involvement of both abled and disabled participation will
helps in attaining community bond between them. And which will helps in gaining
recognition and status in the community.

Helps in attaining body fitness, mental fitness etc.

The sports complex helps to create awareness and importance of sports in daily
life. Which will attract people with disability as the design is accessible and can
act as an eye opener to concerned authority to construct new such complex for
the differently-abled.

Project Scope and Limitations

Scope of the project is that, it can act as space where people can train
sports and can act as leisure and recreational center. Which will help them
in attaining self esteem, confidence, community recognition etc.

The project is limited to design for disability in movement. Because a

majority of people with disability are in movement disability category (20.3
%) as per census of India 2011.

The sports and recreation facilities provided for the users with movement
disabilities only include Athletics, swimming, wheelchair basketball,
badminton, chess, boccia, table tennis, powerlifting, archery, volleyball,
cycling and wheelchair tennis. Unique sports and recreation facilities for
people with seeing, mental and hearing impairments will not be included
on the the project.
