The following features are available in both the Equipment Summary and
the Unit Operation Summary.
Hold the Shift or Control key to select multiple blocks for use with the
buttons.
The Group field for each unit operation model lets you enter a text label
to describe each block.
You can sort the blocks in any tab by the value of any field (including
Group).
You can select the units of measure for any set of variables.
Toggle Filters enables a filter feature which allows you to only show blocks
matching a chosen filter value on any given field(s). The filtering options
include specific values, Blanks, Non-Blanks, and Custom filters which can
contain a combination of equalities, inequalities, substrings at
start/end/anywhere, and regular expressions.
In Aspen Plus, these grids are both included under the Results Summary
in the Data Browser.
The help now has links to relevant portions of the Aspen Process Economic
Analyzer help.
Files used with this feature are now saved in compound files in Aspen
Plus.
19
The workflow has been improved by the addition of extra status messages
and short-cut actions. After activating Aspen Process Economic Analyzer,
the short-cut workflow will complete the additional actions for you. For
example, after activating, you can press the evaluate button immediately
the new short-cuts will perform the prerequisite steps for you: load
simulation data, map using default mappings, size and evaluate.
20
Aspen PIMS
21
The other way in which a CME model can be generated is from PIMS submodels or ACM models using the CME-Visual Executive. However when using
the Visual Executive, the user needs to manually assign attributes (such as
physical type, units, connection types, etc) to the variables and organize
variables into standard CME ports. The advantage when generating the CME
model in HYSYS is that the model variables are automatically assigned the
right attributes and organized into the standard CME ports, thus making the
model ready to be seamlessly loaded into PIMS and Refinery Scheduler.
22
Summary Integrated
Workflows
Besides the key new workflows defined in the sections above, Aspen
Engineering supports several more integrated workflows. A summary of all
the integrated workflow is presented in the table below. The table also

Product Description
Aspen Plus is the AspenTech state-of-the-art steady-state simulation system
that can be used for modeling a variety of industrial processes including
chemical, petrochemical, energy, metals, and refining. Aspen Plus contains a
comprehensive library of unit operation models and allows you to easily plug
in proprietary custom models. In addition, Aspen Plus provides full Windows
interoperability to facilitate the process and design engineers work processes.
Aspen Plus with the Aspen Plus Optimizer and Aspen OnLine modules provides
the framework to make optimization (including closed loop real-time
optimization) a natural extension to simulation, process control, and decision
making.
Aspen Plus automatically installs and works with the following separatelylicensed sub-products:
25
Engineering
Physical properties
In addition to these changes, you may also wish to browse the lists of
features added in versions 2006.5, 2006, 2004.1 and 2004.
Engineering Enhancements
Column Models
Thermosiphon reboilers of RadFrac columns can now
be simulated rigorously using Aspen Shell & Tube
Exchanger (formerly Tasc+).
26
Better values for bubble cap and sieve trays via Glitsch eq. 13 correlation
New packing factors, areas, void fractions, and Stichlmair constants for
new packings
RadFrac, MultiFrac, and PetroFrac now generate results for maximum liquid
superficial velocity and profiles for liquid velocity.
Equation-Oriented Modeling
The following enhancements have been made to the equation-oriented
models:
HeatX will run in Open mode if a rigorous method is chosen and the EO
Option for On-SMEO-Diff is set to Use-Open
27
In RStoic you can now specify the numbers of reactions. When specifying
series reactions, reactions are processed in ascending order; changing
reaction numbers allows you to change the order of the reactions.
Reaction numbers need not be consecutive.
In FSplit you can now make duty or power specifications for outlet
streams when splitting heat or work streams, respectively.
Flash2 and Flash3 now report calculated temperature, pressure, and vapor
fraction as results and accessible variables.
ClChng can now convert heat streams to work streams and vice-versa.
Select the appropriate icon when placing the block, as for streams.
28
V7.0 includes the first phase of a project enabling a new integrated sizing
and costing workflow using Aspen Process Economic Analyzer. You can
now interactively choose the mapping of unit operation models to
equipment models. This workflow is accessible via the Costing toolbar
and menu. See the Integrated Sizing and Costing section for details on
this feature.
Process Flowsheet
Design Spec, Calculator, and Transfer blocks can now be placed on the
flowsheet using icons on the Manipulators tab of the Model Palette.
Dashed connection lines will indicate the unit operation models affected by
these blocks. Display Design-Spec, Transfer, and Calculator
connections on the Tools | Options | Flowsheet tab allows you to turn
off display of these blocks and their connections.
Several new application examples are now included with Aspen Plus:
cogeneration, sulfuric acid, urea, ammonia, Integrated Coal Gasification
Combined-Cycle Power (IGCC), and a set of examples for CO2 removal
using various amines and other solvents.
When using the View | Report command, you can now select checkboxes
to choose any combination of sections to be displayed in the report.
Literature citations for raw NIST data are now available in the
Properties from NIST/TDE Dialog Box and are saved as comments
to the Properties | Data | Pure-Comp forms when saving data to
forms.
Compound classes (such as alcohols and ketones) have been added for
components in NIST database.
29
More information has been added in help for TDE, including a summary
of its capabilities and details on the consistency checks TDE performs
on the raw data.

The enterprise database is now selected when you install Aspen Plus, the
legacy databanks can still be selected using the Database Selector.
31
New security option for the enterprise database allows you to distribute
copies of the database which can be used in Aspen Plus without exposing
any of the parameter values in the database.
Parameters for additional components have been added for the PC-SAFT
and Copolymer PC-SAFT models. These are now stored in the PC-SAFT
and POLYPCSF databanks, which should be used with these models.
32
New Prop-Set properties added for total true species molar and mass flow
rates, total apparent components molar and mass flow rates, and total
apparent components 2nd-liquid molar and mass flow rates.
Engineering enhancements
The Group field for each unit operation model lets you enter a text label to
describe each block.
You can right click in the list of variable names to access additional
commands for sorting, changing units, and filtering data.
33
When you activate the costing engine in V7.1 it will query you to select
the costing basis. The action buttons on the costing and sizing toolbar
have been modified to allow them to be used to perform multiple steps in
the workflow. For example, if you click the evaluate button immediately
after activating the costing engine, the system will perform the
intermediate steps (load, map, size) in addition to performing the
evaluation.
The help now has links to relevant portions of the Aspen Process Economic
Analyzer help.
Files used with Integrated Cost Analysis are now saved in compound files.
Engineering Enhancements
The Generate Estimates feature of RCSTR will now include polymer class
1 and 2 component attributes in the estimates.
34
MCompr now reports profiles of head developed and volumetric flow rate
in each stage.
The Bioethanol from corn and IGCC examples in the application library
have been updated to use the Excel Calculator block.
Four new CO2 capture examples have been added using mixed amines:
MEA+MDEA, DEA+MDEA, piperazine (PZ), and PZ+MEA.
The tolerance for checking mass balances around blocks can now be
adjusted on the Setup | Simulation Options | Check Results sheet.
The option for checking mass balances has also been moved to this sheet.
A new feature in RadFrac lets you control the memory allocated. This can
help in very large problems (equilibrium and rate-based) with many
components where a small subset of the components are actually present
in the column, for users encountering errors indicating not enough
memory is available.
User2 blocks can now reference additional streams not connected to the
block, for convenience. These streams are passed to the subroutine as
inlet streams. When such a stream is specified, you can run the block with
no actual inlet streams connected.
When you use the Block Options | EO Var / Vec sheet to expose as EO
variables the Integer and Real parameters of User and User2 blocks run in
the perturbation layer, you can now specify whether the EO variables
should be Calculated or Constant. They are Calculated by default.
35
Fortran Compiler
Aspen Plus V7.0 was compiled with the Intel Fortran compiler version 9.1
build 33 and Microsoft Visual studio 2005 SP1. User Fortran models compiled
with different compilers or compiler versions might not work, or might run but
not be able to write to the Aspen Plus history file, report file, and control
panel. See Chapter 1 of Aspen Plus User Models on the Documentation DVD
for more details.
Reboiler Return
The default feed convention for reboiler returns has been changed from Onstage to Above-stage, as on-stage is rarely used in practice.
Important: This might lead to different results in cases where the reboiler
return convention was left unspecified. If you require the old behavior, specify
On-stage explicitly.
User Models
The length of IRETN in the flash utility FLSH_FLASH has been changed from 6
to 2*NCC+16 (NCC is the number of conventional components, available as
36
Retired Models
The BatchFrac, RateFrac, Hetran, Aerotran, and HTRI-Xist unit operation
models are no longer supported, and no longer available as of version V7.0.
When you open files from previous versions containing these blocks:
Hetran and Aerotran blocks are converted to rigorous HeatX blocks using
Aspen Hetran or Aspen Aerotran. This conversion should generate the
same results as past versions. A button on the HeatX | Setup |
Specifications sheet will allow you to convert these blocks (as well as
HeatX blocks using Aspen TASC) to use the newer Aspen Shell & Tube
Exchanger (Shell & Tube, formerly Aspen Tasc+) and Aspen Air Cooled
Exchanger (AirCooled, formerly Aspen Acol+) programs. This change will
cause different results, but the results are based on updated heat
exchanger research and should be more accurate than the results of the
older programs.
Note: TASC, Hetran, and Aerotran will be discontinued in the next version
of Aspen Engineering. We strongly encourage you to upgrade to Shell &
Tube and AirCooled now.
The AspenTech Installer will not uninstall MSDE, since you may be using it
with other programs. You must uninstall it separately from Start |
Settings | Control Panel | Add or Remove Programs, where it is
called Microsoft SQL Server Desktop Edition.
If this registry entry exists, the AspenTech Installer will not install the SQL
server:
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\AspenTech\Setup]
"NOSQLExpress"=dword:00000001
If only Microsoft SQL Server 2000 (but neither of the 2005 versions) is
found, then you will be asked only once whether you want to install
Microsoft SQL Server Express 2005 SP1 for use with APED.
If you have created databases in an MSDE server, you will need to back
those up from the Aspen Properties Database Manager from the previous
version and restore them in the Aspen Properties Database Manager V7.0
in order to use them.
37
Pure component parameters for component HE-4 (helium) used with the
PENG-ROB, RK-SOAVE, PR-BM, and RKS-BM methods were missing.
The values for NOATOM and ATOMNO for component AIR were missing
from PURE11 and newer versions of the pure component database.
In certain cases when binary parameters were available for the same pair
from multiple databanks, past versions of APED would not always follow
the database search order, and in some cases would use the data from a
less-preferred databank. Now it follows the search order in all cases. This
may cause different results if you were using APED and you have different
data for a pair in different databanks.
The last element of THRSWT was missing for component HNO3 in the
ELECPURE databank. This caused some data for some components to
appear missing.
38
While the enterprise database and the legacy databanks contain the same
data, since the SQL database and the legacy databanks store numbers in
different ways, there may be differing round-off error in the last digit (specify
nth digit) of some values. In most cases, this will not make any difference in
simulations. In certain borderline cases (particularly in rigorous distillation)
which barely converge, this may cause them to not converge, and some cases
which did not converge may now converge.
39
performed, and instead the full flooding capacity predicted by the equation is
used. This may cause different results if you use this method.
40
The most important areas where you might encounter differences between
Aspen Plus V7.1 and earlier versions are:
Retired Models
A converter available from the AspenTech Support web site will allow you to
convert HeatX blocks using Aspen TASC and Aspen Hetran to use the newer
Aspen Shell & Tube Exchanger (Shell & Tube, formerly Aspen Tasc+) and
convert blocks using Aspen Aerotran to use Aspen Air Cooled Exchanger
(AirCooled, formerly Aspen Acol+). This change will cause different results,
but the results are based on updated heat exchanger research and should be
more accurate than the results of the older programs.
Important:
This (V7.1) is the last version of Aspen Plus and Aspen Exchanger Design
& Rating that will support TASC, Hetran, and Aerotran. We strongly
encourage you to upgrade to Shell & Tube and AirCooled now.
Aspen TASC is not included with the current version of Aspen Exchanger
Design & Rating. In order to use the legacy TASC program with HeatX in
Aspen Plus V7.1, you must install Aspen TASC 2006.5. In order to use the
converter, you must install both the program you are converting from
(Aspen TASC 2006.5, Aspen Hetran, or Aspen Aerotran) and the program
you are converting to (Shell & Tube or AirCooled).
All settings in TASC and most settings in Hetran and Aerotran can be
represented precisely in Shell & Tube and AirCooled. The following features of
Hetran and Aerotran are not supported (along with the result after using the
converter):
Hetran To EDR Shell & Tube

Users of the old add-in who are not experiencing any problems may wish
to continue using the old version. To do so, they merely need to run this
utility and select the XLA version before opening any files with Excel
Calculator blocks in Aspen Plus V7.1.
Users who want to use the new add-in in new files do not need to do
anything. However, Excel files created with previous versions of Aspen
Plus using the XLA version of the add-in contain references to this version
of the add-in. When they are opened, Excel will try to use the XLA add-in
if it is active, and thus the files will not work properly, as Aspen Plus will
be trying to use the COM version. The XLA version will be active on
computers where it has been used with previous versions of Aspen Plus,
even if the utility has been used to set the COM version to be used.
To update these files, first disable the old version in Excel by selecting
Tools | Add-ins, and clear the checkbox next to Calcexceladdin. Then
close Excel entirely before opening your Aspen Plus files containing Excel
Calculator blocks. With the XLA add-in disabled, Aspen Plus will be able to
update the references in these files to use the COM add-in.
CAPE-OPEN Improvements
Aspen Plus now supports CAPE-OPEN flash as part of a CAPE-OPEN Property
Package when performing flash calculations for streams, property-sets, Flash
blocks and other unit operation models. If you import a CAPE-OPEN 1.0
property package containing a flash model, Aspen Plus will now use that
model instead of using its own routines. This may produce different results if
you were using such CAPE-OPEN packages with previous versions of Aspen

be flagged as incorrect, but only by the engine, where it will result in an input
translation error. If you encounter this error, you should specify element 2 of
DHVLWT, the temperature corresponding to the heat of vaporization value
provided in element 1. Future versions will catch this error on the form and
mark it incomplete when element 2 is missing.
A problem that can occur with very large infinite dilution activity coefficients
was fixed. This problem usually led to a Fortran error, but if your model was
set to continue after such errors, you would get wrong results which have
been corrected in this version.
A problem that can occur when estimating binary parameters using the SRPOLAR property method was fixed. This may give different results for
components with very low vapor pressure.
Pressure Relief
Pressure Relief now handles solids correctly when they appear in referenced
streams, including CISOLID and NC substreams, and reactions involving
solids, including reactions across different substreams. In some cases it may
45
have been possible to run Pressure Relief with solids in the past, but the
results may not have been correct.

including most of the elements in the periodic table. The OLI property method
provides accurate results for the thermodynamic and transport properties of
aqueous mixtures and associated immiscible organic mixtures. Aspen OLI
Interface refers to the interface that enables you to use OLI products and
capabilities within the Aspen Engineering Suite environment. This manual
provides instructions on how to use the combined features of the Aspen OLI
Interface and the software you license separately from OLI Systems Inc. We
refer to these combined products as Aspen OLI.
Easier installation.
Easier Installation
There is no longer a need to install the OLI alliance files from the Aspen Plus
Simulation Engine window. This is now handled automatically when you install
the files. You still need to install the OLI Alliance Suite from the installer
delivered in the Aspen OLI Interface installation folder.
Compatibility Notes
Aspen OLI Interface V7.0 and V7.1 can be installed and used at the same
time as version 2006.5 and other previous versions of Aspen OLI Interface.

The enterprise database is now selected when you install Aspen Plus,
though the legacy databanks can still be selected using the Database
Selector.
New security option for the enterprise database allows you to distribute
copies of the database which can be used in Aspen Plus without exposing
any of the parameter values in the database.
57
Usability Enhancements
Parameters for additional components have been added for the PC-SAFT
and Copolymer PC-SAFT models. These are now stored in the PC-SAFT
and POLYPCSF databanks, which should be used with these models.
New Prop-Set properties added for total true species molar and mass flow
rates, total apparent components molar and mass flow rates, and total
apparent components 2nd-liquid molar and mass flow rates.
58
Aspen Properties now supports CAPE-OPEN flash. If you import a CAPEOPEN 1.0 property package containing a flash model, Aspen Properties will
now use that model instead of using its own flash, though an option is
available on the Properties | CAPE-OPEN Packages form to use the
Aspen Properties flash. In addition, options are now available to specify
the default Henry components ID, free-water method, water solubility
method, solution chemistry ID, and true or apparent component
approach. These defaults are used when a package does not provide a
method for calculating properties required by the calculation.
59
Fortran Compiler
Aspen Properties V7.0 was compiled with the Intel Fortran compiler version
9.1 build 33 and Microsoft Visual studio 2005 SP1. User Fortran models
compiled with different compilers or compiler versions might not work, or
might run but not be able to write to the Aspen Plus history file, report file,
and control panel. See Chapter 1 of Aspen Plus User Models on the
Documentation DVD for more details.
User Models
The length of IRETN in the flash utility FLSH_FLASH has been changed from 6
to 2*NCC+16 (NCC is the number of conventional components, available as
NCOMP_NCC in common DMS_NCOMP). Code which relied on this vector
being a fixed length may need to be updated.
"NOSQLExpress"=dword:00000001
If only Microsoft SQL Server 2000 (but neither of the 2005 versions) is
found then you will be asked only once whether you want to install
Microsoft SQL Server Express 2005 SP1 for use with APED.
If you have created databases in an MSDE server, you will need to back
those up from the Aspen Properties Database Manager from the previous
version and restore them in the Aspen Properties Database Manager V7.0
in order to use them.
60
Pure component parameters for component HE-4 (helium) used with the
PENG-ROB, RK-SOAVE, PR-BM, and RKS-BM methods were missing.
The values for NOATOM and ATOMNO for component AIR were missing
from PURE11 and newer versions of the pure component database.
In certain cases when binary parameters were available for the same pair
from multiple databanks, past versions of APED would not always follow
the database search order, and in some cases would use the data from a
less-preferred databank. Now it follows the search order in all cases. This
might cause different results if you were using APED and you have
different data for a pair in different databanks.
The last element of THRSWT was missing for component HNO3 in the
ELECPURE databank. This caused some data for some components to
appear missing.
61
62
CAPE-OPEN Improvements
Aspen Properties now supports CAPE-OPEN flash. If you import a CAPE-OPEN
1.0 property package containing a flash model, Aspen Properties will now use
that model instead of using its own routines. This may produce different
results if you were using such CAPE-OPEN packages with previous versions of
Aspen Properties. An option on the Properties | CAPE-OPEN Packages
form for the package allows you to use the Aspen Properties flash model
instead of the one from the package.
Aspen Properties now provides improved support for importing CAPE-OPEN
packages generated from Aspen Plus and Aspen Properties. It is no longer
necessary to specify the correct Property Method on the CAPE-OPEN
Packages form to fully reproduce the behavior of the package in these cases.
All the property specifications (property methods, Henry components ID, freewater method, water solubility method, solution chemistry ID, and true or
apparent component approach), property parameter values, and other user
modifications are fully imported into the current simulation. If you were using
a CAPE-OPEN package generated by Aspen Plus or Aspen Properties within an
Aspen Properties simulation in past versions without matching the property
method on the CAPE-OPEN Packages form to the method used in the
package, you may see different results in V7.1.

ACM Language (.acmf) files generated using previous versions of Aspen
Custom Modeler are compatible with version V7.1. You may see some
warning messages when loading .acmf files created with previous
versions. This is a result of some solver options that have become
obsolete or have been renamed. Saving the file in ACM V7.1 eliminates
these warnings.
Aspen Plus .appdf files created with earlier versions of Aspen Plus are not
compatible with Aspen Custom Modeler V7.1. If you try to load a physical
properties file (.appdf) that was generated using an earlier version of
Aspen Plus, the following error message appears:
SAIPIN-F-Error loading Aspen your .appdf File.
Please refer to the Aspen Properties error messages first, or it may be
due to an incompatible PDF file version.
You should leave the application and reload your input file once you have
rectified the problem.
After you receive this error, exit Aspen Custom Modeler before loading any
further simulations. To continue, you must regenerate the .appdf file using
Aspen Plus V7.1.

If your Aspen Model Runner simulation uses a custom model library (.acml
file) generated from a previous release of Aspen Custom Modeler, it
cannot be loaded in Aspen Model Runner V7.0. Load the source .acmf
version of these files into Aspen Custom Modeler V7.0 and regenerate the
library file. To avoid this issue in future we recommend that you copy the
relevant models and other types from the library in to the Aspen Model
Runner simulation so that it no longer requires the library to run.
Aspen Plus .appdf files created with earlier versions of Aspen Plus are not
compatible with Aspen Model Runner V7.0.
After you receive this error, exit Aspen Model Runner before loading any
further simulations. To continue, you must regenerate the .appdf file
using Aspen Plus V7.0.

As in Aspen Plus, the Model Library toolbar appears docked to the bottom of
the Aspen Plus Dynamics application window and organizes the model library
into tabs. It behaves just like the Aspen Plus model library and improves the
workflow for creating control schemes, adding pressure relief equipment, and
making other changes to the flowsheet.
Only models which are self initializing should be created within Aspen Plus
Dynamics (for example, controllers, pressure relief equipment, pipe).
Distillation columns should be created within Aspen Plus; you can then use
Update Dynamics to add the new block to an existing flowsheet.

Robustness/Performance Enhancements
Improve Dynamic Simulation Performance Using Stream
Tearing
For flow driven simulations with recycle streams and for all pressure driven
simulations, dynamic simulation performance can be improved by using
stream tearing.
In Aspen Plus Dynamics, stream tearing has been incorporated into the
MaterialStream stream type and the Valve model.
Tearing in the MaterialStream is activated via a check box on the Configure
form. This should ONLY be used for recycle streams in flow driven.
For pressure-driven simulations, you must use a Valve model to tear the
stream. The Valve model includes the pressure/flow derivatives to update the
torn stream flow variable. The TearStream parameter on Valves Configure
form has 3 options:
For details and examples on how to use this new feature, see Improve
Dynamic Simulation Performance Using Stream Tearing in the online
help.
Engineering Enhancements
PID Support Vendor Specific Control Algorithms
Aspen Plus Dynamics now supports some of the key industrial vendors PID
algorithms. The implementation has been given to PIDIncr model within
ControlModels. This means the same tuning parameters used in the model
can be used directly with the actual controllers (and visa versa). As the model
is using the documented algorithms, its behavior should match the real
controller behavior. The implemented vendor specific control algorithms and
their PID equation types are:
Foxboro algorithm
o
Honeywell algorithm
o
84
Yokogawa algorithm
o
Note: The Automatic Controller Tuning method does not support these
new vendor specific algorithms. For details on this new feature, see PID
Algorithms in the on-line help.
Miscellaneous Enhancements
TimeData model includes the option to repeatedly cycle through the data. To
activate, set Cycle to yes on the Configure form.
Stream Sensor now allows user to calculate the gross and net heating values.
Select Low heating value from the Available properties window in the
ConfigureSensor form to obtain the stream gross heating value (QVALGRS)
and the net heating value (QVALNET), respectively.

Out_Relief (Vapor relief port 0 or many
streams allowed)
Not supported
In version 2006, we have removed the Out_Relief port and made it possible
for you to connect multiple streams to the Out_V port to connect to relief
devices. We have also made it possible to connect multiple streams to the
Out_L port.
The Out_Relief port is still included in the model allowing simulations which
used the Out_Relief port to load correctly but the problem will be
underspecified. Users must reconnect relief streams from the Out_Relief port
to the Out_V port in order to be able to run the simulation.
87
These options make it easy for you to find all changes to the default values
and specifications that you have made for review, reporting, or other
purposes
You can now drag and drop models from the Model Library Menu onto the
flow sheet

Compatibility Notes
Aspen Adsorption V7.0 and V7.1 can be installed and used at the same time
as version 2006.5 and other previous versions of Aspen Adsorption. However,
observe following compatibility issues when upgrading your existing
simulations to V7.0 or V7.1:
The ImpEuler (11.), VSIE (11.1), and Gear (11.1) integrators were old
implementations that have been superseded by the Implicit Euler and
Gear integrators that were introduced in the 12.1 release. They were
included in the 12.1, 2004, and 2004.1 versions to give time for transition
of existing simulations to the new integrators. These integrators have
been withdrawn from version 2006 and later. If you load a simulation that
uses one of these integrators it will automatically switch to using the
equivalent newer integrator, and will select option and tolerance values
that match the old integrator as closely as possible.

Electrolyte Capabilities
Several chemical process calculations involve electrolytic applications. The
new capabilities enable the user to analyze and optimize processes involving
ionic species, complex ions, and salt precipitation, with strong acids, weak
acids, and bases.
Examples of applications for electrolyte process calculation with the Aspen
Physical Property System include:
Size equipment
Review and edit key unit operation and equipment model parameters
The Economic Evaluation features can also be accessed via Tools | Aspen
Economic Evaluation in the tools menu. (An Aspen Process Economic
Analyzer license is required to enable the commands.) See the Integrated
Sizing and Costing section in chapter 2, Aspen Integration Projects, and the
online help Tools and Utilities section for details on this feature.
Hydrates Utility
The Hydrates Utility has been enhanced to support Structure H hydrates in
addition to Structures I and II. The Structure H hydrate requires two types of
molecules in its formation:
96
Therefore, to obtain the Structure H prediction, the given stream must consist
of at least one small Structure H former and one large Structure H former. In
addition, Structure H hydrates can only form under the Vapor-Liquid-Aqueous
condition. This enhancement is based the work of Mehta and Sloan [E.D.
Sloan, Clathrate hydrates of natural gases, 2nd edition, 1998, 705pp].
Process Utilities
In this version, HYSYS introduces the concept of process utilities. Users can
tag and designate material and energy streams as utilities. With this
information HYSYS can calculate the utility consumption per utility type as
well as total hot/cold utility consumption in the flowsheet.
This new functionality is provided through the flowsheet summary and it can
be done at the flowsheet level or for a selected-flowsheet scope. To support
this new function a process utility manager user interface is provided (Tools |
Process Utility Manager). HYSYS provides a number of built-in utilities with
defined heat capacity and temperature range as well as other physical
properties. Users can customize it by adding user-defined utilities. The
process utility manager has full automation support as well with integration
with HX-Net, namely utilities defined in the HYSYS utility manager can be
exported to HX-Net and vice-versa.
A new page is added to the column input expert for distillation and
reboiled absorber to guide the user through the selection of different
reboiler configurations. It will automatically create a column sub-flowsheet
with the desired reboiler configuration and pre-define the specifications
needed to run the simulation.
The new Reboiler Config sheet allows you to specify one of several
possible configurations for the thermosiphon reboiler.
97
The user can switch back and forth between a regular heat exchanger and
an EDR-Shell and Tube heat exchanger.
Some specs related to the EDR-Shell and Tube heat exchanger are
automatically defined to minimize the user input.
A damping factor is added for EDR-Shell and Tube heat exchangers inside
the column sub-flowsheet to improve the convergence of the solver.
Centrifugal Compressors
Head Calculation Methods
In this version, HYSYS introduces two new approaches for the polytropic head
calculation: the Huntington and Reference Methods. Both are described in
detail in R.A. Huntington, Journal of Engineering for Turbines and Power,
98
1985. Both methods are applicable when performance curves are defined and
when they are not used.
Huntington Method
Unlike the Schultz method this method does not assume a polytropic path of
the form PV = C . This method uses the definition of the polytropic path
H = Vdp (where H is compressor Head) combined with the Maxwell equation
n
dh = Tds + Vdp . This yields the general relationship of the entropy derivative
1 e dP
along the polytropic path dS = R
.
Z
e P
To integrate this equation, Huntington found that a relationship of the form
Z = a + b(P / P1 ) + c ln (P / P1 ) yields results that are more accurate than the
Schultz method. Huntington compared the results against those obtained
using the reference method (see below). Currently, this method is supported
only in HYSYS Steady-State.
Reference Method
This method is based on the numerical integration of the equations that
define a polytropic path H = Vdp and H = edh , without any assumption
regarding the form of the polytropic path or the compressibility factor
dependency on pressure. The integration method requires the polytropic
efficiency to be constant so it can be used only when the user specifies a
value for the polytropic efficiency or when the performance curves have been
defined for polytropic efficiency. HYSYS currently supports this method only in
Steady State.
Performance Curves: Off-Design Corrections
Based on dimensional analysis, the performance curves can be corrected due
to departures in temperature, pressure, and molecular weight relative to the
values at design conditions.
Two new parameters can be entered for the performance curves: Design
Temperature and Design Molecular Weight. When these are supplied, HYSYS
then corrects the inlet volumetric flow rate to the equivalent design conditions
flow rate.
Using the curves, one obtains a design-conditions Head that can be converted
to a working-conditions Head based again on non-dimensional analysis. OffDesign Corrections are supported in both steady-state and dynamics.
99
state into one fuel and air stream in Dynamics. It will also split the same
stream into air and one fuel stream when returning to steady state.
Optimizer
Hyprotech SQP Optimizer Monitor
Users can now monitor the convergence of the Hyprotech SQP solver in
HYSYS Optimizer. The Monitor tab displays the summary of convergence by
providing the Iteration number, the Objective Function value, and Variable
values with names and appropriate units after completion of each major
optimization iteration during the convergence of the algorithm.
Min/Max of the Objective Function
Users can now specify the direction of optimization (Min/Max of Objective
Function) within the Optimizer window of Hyprotech SQP and MDC
Optimizers.
Pipe Segment
Working in pipe segments you now can:
Show absolute values for friction pressure drop, static pressure drop and
acceleration pressure drop in Performance/Profiles.
Show the following heat transfer coefficients in the Rating Page: Heat
transfer coefficients of internal film, external film, pipe wall and external
insulation.
The ACM Op Configuration tab allows you to select from all installed ACM
models.
Custom ACM tables exported with the model now appear on the Variables
and Parameters tabs.

A converter available from the AspenTech Support web site will allow you to
convert from a Heat Exchanger using Aspen TASC to the newer Aspen Shell &
Tube Exchanger (Shell & Tube, formerly Aspen Tasc+) and convert Air
Coolers using Aspen ACOL to the Aspen Air Cooled Exchanger (AirCooled,
formerly Aspen Acol+). This change will cause different results, but the
results are based on updated heat exchanger research and should be more
accurate than the results of the older programs.
Important:
This (V7.1) is the last version of Aspen HYSYS that will support TASC and
ACOL. We strongly encourage you to upgrade to Shell & Tube and
AirCooled now.
Aspen TASC is not included with the current version of Aspen Exchanger
Design & Rating. In order to use the legacy TASC program with HYSYS in
V7.1, you must install Aspen TASC 2006.5. In order to use the converter
to convert TASC to Shell & Tube, you must install Aspen TASC 2006.5
and Aspen Shell & Tube Exchanger.
Aspen ACOL is not included with the current version of Aspen Exchanger
Design & Rating. In order to use the legacy ACOL program with HYSYS in
V7.1, you must install Aspen ACOL 2006.5. In order to use the converter
to convert ACOL to Shell & Tube, you must also install Aspen ACOL
2006.5 and Aspen Air Cooled Exchanger.
All settings in TASC and most settings in ACOL can be represented precisely
in Shell & Tube and AirCooled.

Hydraulics Subflowsheet
Aspen Hydraulics
There are two new steady-state unit operations available in the Aspen
Hydraulics subflowsheet: (1) an orifice plate and (2) a bend. The orifice plate
operation lets users model the effect of a sudden change of velocity in a
pipeline, while the bend enables modeling of the effect of a change in flow
direction. In v7.0, these new operations are only supported in steady-state
simulations, the ability to model these fittings in dynamic simulations will be
available in the coming release.
Aspen Hydraulics
120
For dynamic simulations in Aspen Hydraulics, the user now has the option of
modeling a fitting through one, none, or both of these mechanisms. The
modeling techniques for these fittings can be selected on the Dynamics tab
of the specific fitting view with two new checkboxes:
If the Model as an area change is selected, then the numerical flow area of
the face representing the fitting will be modified as appropriate. For example,
for an orifice plate, the flow area of the face that represents the orifice will be
set to the cross-sectional area of the throat. If the Model as a form loss is
selected, then a form loss factor will be estimated using the method selected
in the Pressure drop selection box on the Data tab and the K v2 term is
included in the momentum equation.
Important: To include this additional form loss mechanism, form losses must
be included globally with the Wall Friction option of the dynamic solver.
If both of the checkboxes are selected, then both of these methods are
included in the model. If both boxes are not checked, then the dynamic
simulation will proceed as if the fitting does not exist.
As a final note, care must be taken when modeling the area change at a
fitting. If the area change is included in the model, then the size of the pipe
cells adjacent to the fitting can have a significant impact on the pressure drop
calculated across the fitting. It may be necessary that the length of the pipe
cells be of the same order as the diameter of the fitting before the dynamic
solution converges.

Petroleum Assays

that can be used in planning and scheduling applications like PIMS-AO, Aspen
Refinery Scheduler (formerly OrionXT), etc.
The objective behind facilitating recalibration and exchange of submodels is
that non-Engineers in Planning and Scheduling domains can use these refitted accurate models in their plant optimization analysis. The internal
architectural layout of the PSR has also been re-designed, allowing the unit to
solve much faster. This is a big advantage when loading and solving large
refinery wide flowsheets containing many PSR units.
Notes:
Petroleum Assays
The interface for the petroleum assay manager has been simplified in order to
tighten the link between Aspen HYSYS Petroleum Refining and Aspen PIMS.
PIMS formatted assays can now be easily imported and exported (new
feature) from Petroleum Assay Manager. In the previous versions, user
required a text based input file for mapping PIMS assay with petroleum
assays. Now a simple step-by-step graphical wizard is implemented for
mapping purposes which makes PIMS assay import/export easier to use.
127
information in order to generate the petroleum assay for any granularity. For
assay properties it can take in properties curve (Boiling Point vs. Property
value), bulk properties and extrapolation options in order to distribute
properties among its components.
The property characterization functionality mentioned above is also available
on manipulator unit operation in order to shift properties using given property
curve.
This interface is also available on every stream and it can be exported to
HYSYS spreadsheets, OLE, and Aspen Simulation Workbook (through HYSYS
spreadsheet).
Petroleum Distillation
Aspen PIMS is well known for its enterprise-wide optimization capabilities.
Aspen PIMS has two ways of modeling distillation process: (1) swing cut
modeling and (2) short cut distillation (SCD) modeling. Swing cut modeling is
a flow optimization problem that requires the product yields (sometimes
referred to as LP vectors) for each main product as well as swing products.
Whereas, the short cut distillation model is a proprietary method that
calculates the product yield as a function of its effective cut points. The main
reason to integrate the PIMS distillation operation with the Aspen HYSYS
Petroleum Refining is to update the LP vectors in the swing cut utility
modeling and to update the tuning parameters in the SCD modeling through
rigorous HYSYS distillation column.
For swing cut modeling approach in PIMS, Aspen HYSYS Petroleum Refining
has a swing cut utility. This utility can now be run over a petroleum column as
well as a rigorous distillation column. When this utility is applied to a
petroleum column, it manipulates the TBP End Points for swing cuts and

When a hydroprocessor bed is added, the user can connect feed streams
(combined liquid feed and hydrogen) to the hydroprocessor bed. Any feed
stream attached to the hydroprocessor bed must use the components from
the hcr.cml file and the HCRSRK fluid package that is created when importing
hcr.cml. The user can use a stream cutter to get a stream on the correct
component basis. The user can tune the model manually to match plant data
by adjusting the basic tuning parameters or the advanced tuning parameters.
The hydroprocessor bed may also be placed within an EO flowsheet that uses
the fluid package and components from hcr.cml. Within the EO flowsheet
environment the hydroprocessor bed can be placed from the EO palette or
from the Flowsheet | Add Operation menu item.

into other applications such as Aspen PIMS and Aspen Refinery Scheduler. It
is useful to build such CME models in HYSYS for complex models such as
refinery reactors (Hydrocracker, FCC, Reformer, etc) which are typically
based on several tens of thousands of equations and variables. These models
are usually calibrated to fit the plant data. The CME model would try to
represent such a complex system in a simplified form in terms of user
selected model independent and dependent variables.
The CME models built in V7.1 are linear models representing the dependent
model variables (product flow rates, product properties, etc) as a linear
combination of independent variables (feed flow rates, feed properties,
reactor parameters, etc). The coefficients in these models are calculated
based on derivatives calculated automatically by the program.
The other way in which a CME model can be generated is from PIMS
submodels or ACM models using the CME-Visual Executive. CME Visual
Executive is available to all users and can be accessed through the Start |
AspenTech. However, when using the Visual Executive, the user needs to
manually assign attributes (such as physical type, units, connection types,
etc) to the variables and organize variables into standard CME ports. The
advantage when generating the CME model in HYSYS is that the model
variables are automatically assigned the right attributes and organized into
the standard CME ports, thus making the model ready to be seamlessly
loaded into PIMS and Refinery Scheduler.

Petroleum Distillation
The Petroleum Column in V7.1 now also has an option to generate PIMS
format SCD file using a step-by-step wizard. While writing a PIMS format SCD
file, user can also add assays stored in petroleum assay manager.
Aspen HYSYS Petroleum Refining now uses the OOMF framework for
petroleum column simulation and calibration. This enables petroleum column
to generate consistent simulation result as PIMS SCD and calibration results
in petroleum column has been improved.

Aspen Fired Heater is for the simulation and rating of furnaces and fired
heaters. The program calculates heat transfer and other key parameters in a
variety of tube configurations in both box and cylindrical fireboxes using the
well stirred, imperfectly stirred or long-furnace models. In addition the heat
transfer in up to nine convection banks can be handled. Aspen Fired Heater
uses the standard user interface adopted by other EDR programs and
replaced the FIHR program in 2007.
156
157
The inlet pressure, outlet pressure, and maximum pressure loss are set as
required on the same form.
The ability of calculating the inlet pressure of any process stream in the fired
heater given a specified outlet pressure will be important for users needing to
supply the process fluid to an upstream unit (e.g., a vacuum column) at a
particular pressure.
In the Checking calculation, the calculated pressure change is scaled when
determining outlet pressure from inlet, so that the outlet pressure remains at
the initially specified value. The result of such a Checking calculation is a ratio
of the calculated to the specified pressure change. The benefit of a Checking
calculation is that it safeguards against the case where the calculated
pressure change is much larger than anticipated, maybe approaching, or even
larger than, a specified inlet pressure. This would have the effect of
introducing pressure values into the calculation which are either impossible,
or which would lead to other properties which would severely distort the
thermal calculations.
For this reason, two further pressure calculation options are available. These
are to do simulation calculations (outlet from inlet or inlet from outlet) as long
as the pressure changes are small, but should the pressure change exceed
the (user-specified) maximum pressure drop, the calculation reverts to
Checking the pressure change. It reports the ratio of the predicted change to
158
the maximum value, but never allows calculated pressures fall below the limit
defined by the maximum pressure drop.

gives better predictions of peak tube temperature and avoids the excessively

De-Resonating Baffles
You can now explicitly specify the number and location of De-resonating
baffles, which can protect against any acoustic resonance, one of the
conditions reported in the vibration output. These baffles do not appear on
the tube layout output, but are handled fully in the internal calculations. If
tubes need to be removed to make space for these baffles, you can simply
specify the remaining number of tubes in the input.

outlet temperature. This continues to be the default method in Aspen Shell &
Tube Exchanger V7.0. However, in practice, when the outlet temperature is
above the bubble point, the vapour-gas and condensate outlet temperatures
can be different. Aspen Shell & Tube Exchanger V7.0 provides a new option in
which the calculation is weighted towards the area required to cool the
condensate to the required outlet temperature. This will usually give higher
overall heat transfer coefficients than the default method, and is similar to the
method used by the Hetran program. There is a new input item in the
Program Options form to allow selection of the appropriate method.
167
Once selected, the physical property input screen will be displayed, showing
cumulative heat load rather than specific enthalpy. When the heat load option
is selected, the user must specify all pertinent physical properties and the

For those users who still prefer the Hetran multi-component condensation
model, we have added the option to access the Hetran calculation engine
from inside the Aspen Aspen Shell & Tube Exchanger UI. In the screen above,
you will see a tab for the Hetran Condensation Model which will allow you to
launch the Contran utility which uses the Hetran calculation engine. This
option will only work for multi-component condensation applications. If an
existing input file is opened which contains Hetran data, this data will be read
into the Contran utility automatically. Input data specified in the Aspen Shell
& Tube Exchanger UI cannot be transferred to the Contran utility, however
input data specified in the Contran utility can be transferred back to the
Aspen Shell & Tube Exchanger UI input using the Run | Transfer operation.
170
and frictional pressure gradients, will be based on 20 passes, as will the flow
length along which the tube side pressure drop is based.
You should explicitly specify the total number of tubes in the exchanger, to
make sure this is correct, since a tube layout with 20 passes will often have
slightly fewer tubes than one with 10.
The pass multiplier does not have to be an integer. For example, 20 passes
could be modeled as 16 passes and multiplier of 1.25. A multiplier of 2,
however, would mean that you could edit the tube layout, removing a line of
tubes in the middle of each of the 10 passes, to give a tube layout that
appeared to have 20 passes.
Whenever you specify a pass multiplier, you will get a Results Warning,
reminding you that the geometry is based one number of passes, while the
performance is based on a different number. There is a further warning
should the multiplier give you a non-integral number of passes.
The multiplier is not applied if the basic exchanger has a single pass. Modeling
20 passes by specifying a 2-pass exchanger with a multiplier of 10 is possible
but unwise, since temperature difference effects may not be modeled
accurately. Once the number of passes exceeds 4 or 6, there is usually little
change in multi-pass temperature difference effects.
The multiplier can be used in Design mode; a multiplier of 2 is recommended,
but check any Design carefully, to get the number of tubes correct.
The input can be found in Calculations Options as shown below:

When used as a stand-alone program in design mode, Aspen Shell & Tube
Mechanical can optimize the design of most components including flanges,
tube sheets, expansion joints, supports, shell, and nozzle reinforcement. They
conform to TEMA standards and several international codes including,
including ASME Section VIII, Div.1, CODAP, AD Merkbltter, and EN13445.
The calculation of tube stresses across the tubesheet diameter has been
expanded. Tension and compression stresses are shown as well as the
location of such stresses in reference to parameter Xa (periphery).
In fixed tubesheet units without expansion joints, the program can now
provide the maximum positive and negative axial expansion (the amount
the tubes can move in reference to the shell without the exchanger being
overstressed). The input selection is in Tubesheets | Miscellaneous tab,
shown below:
The output will show all calculated stresses for these two conditions. A
message will also be provided in the results section as shown here:

Ten operating conditions load cases. The user can now enter operating
pressures and temperatures to cover a range of conditions that an
exchanger will experience during operation. The input selection is under
Design Specifications > tab - Heat Transfer Data and Operating Loads.
The user must select the option of Yes under the question ASME for
thermal cases use operating loads for the program to use these data.
See screen shot below for a representative example.
The resulting design will satisfy all stated conditions of pressures and
temperatures. This capability will greatly simplify designs that need to
comply with many different conditions. The overall mechanical design
quality is highly dependent on the correct thermal data transferred to
Shell & Tube Mechanical, thus it is very important to have data transferred
from our thermal program (Shell & Tube Exchanger).

Aspen MUSE
Product Description
Aspen MUSE performs detailed simulation of multi-stream plate-fin heat
exchangers made from brazed aluminum, stainless steel or titanium. It can be
used standalone by the thermal specialist for exchanger design or as an
integrated product with AspenTech's steady-state process simulation
program, HYSYS.
When used as a stand-alone program, Aspen MUSE can be used for both first
pass calculations and detailed layer-by-layer analysis to evaluate new uses,
revamps, process conditions and fouling cases. It can also perform full
thermosyphon modeling, where one or more exchanger streams are subject
to natural circulation, as well as crossflow streams.
When integrated with HYSYS, Aspen MUSE provides engineers with the ability
to rigorously model processes that use multi-stream plate-fin heat
exchangers, such as LNG, ethylene, or air separation. It can be used to
identify capital saving opportunities in the overall process configuration.
Bottlenecks can be identified, process improvements modeled for various
process operating scenarios.
Compatibility Notes
Aspen MUSE V7.0 and V7.1 can be installed and used at the same time as
version 2006.5 and other previous versions of Aspen MUSE.

Extensive output
Simulation
The new Simulation options provide the same fundamental facilities as Aspen
MUSE, with modeling based on either the common wall temperature
assumption (stream by stream) or full modeling of each of the layers in the
exchanger, which permits the layer pattern (stacking pattern) to be assessed,
both in terms of performance and structural implications due to thermal
stressing. A new calculation procedure gives more flexibility in modeling the
full geometric complexity of these exchangers, and in achieving solutions for
exchangers with very tight temperature pinches. At present the calculation
focuses on standard counter-flow geometries, including draw on/off at any
point along the exchanger, and combining or dividing redistributors. Crossflow geometries will be added in the next release.
Layer Types
The new facility for specifying the geometry of each layer type provides a
significant advance on the stream-based geometry specification in MUSE. Not
only is the specification easier, being more closely related to the information
available on an exchanger drawing, but restrictions implicit in the streambased specification, such as all layers for a stream having the same fin types
and distributor layout, are removed. The input provided is also shown in a
diagram, on both an overall exchanger and individual layer basis, providing
an additional check on the consistency and correctness of the data supplied.
HTFS Methods
The methods for heat transfer and pressure drop in plate fin exchangers uses
HTFS technology for these exchangers, for both single phase and two-phase
flows. This builds on many years of experimental research and development
which gives HTFS unique experience on plate fin exchangers. All the options
in Aspen MUSE are available in Aspen Plate Fin Exchanger, including
accessing fin data banks used with MUSE, and switching between versions of
187
User Interface
The new user interface in Aspen Plate Fin Exchanger means that all the
programs in the Aspen Exchanger Design and Rating (EDR) family now share
a common structure. This provides access to the extensive range of Aspen
Properties options, and facilities for linking input and output data to Excel. An
option to import process and properties data from an Aspen HYSYS LNG block
is available, and full links permitting the program to be used as part of a
HYSYS simulation are planned for a future release.
The new user interface includes Active Input Checking, so that every unset
input item either shows a default value, or indicates that an input is
mandatory, or is grayed out to indicate it is not needed in the current context.
All defaults and input indicators are revised after each new input item is
specified, and an indication is given when an item is in error. These input
facilities, together with extensive Help text, make specification of even
complex multi-stream exchangers and their operating conditions relatively
straightforward.
The new User Interface can import Aspen MUSE input data files, and translate
them into the new data format for Aspen Plate Fin Exchanger.
Design
The new Design option relies on the same well-established logic as Aspen
MUSE, but provides additional features. The first shot design needs only
process data as input. The logic provides heuristics for selecting fin and
distributor types, followed by an optimization for the length, width and
number of each layer type, to give the required duty for each stream,
consistent with specified pressure drop constraints. There is then a very
flexible facility to do a more detailed design, specifying some parts for the
exchanger geometry, such as fins or distributors to be used, and leaving the
program to determine any unset geometry. New features not in MUSE include
design with multiple fin types for each stream, and more control over
redistribution and multiple streams in a layer.
After a Design, the results can be used to update the exchanger geometry,
ready for a Simulation calculation.
Calculation Options
New calculation options include the ability to perform Checking calculations,
as well Simulation, and heat transfer in distributors. Checking calculations (on
a stream by stream basis) provide a broad indication of how the surface area
of each stream compares with that needed for a specified duty. Distributor
heat transfer, which is optional, allows distributors to be explicitly included in
the exchanger thermal performance, rather than ignoring them, and treating
any heat transfer there as simply providing a margin.
There are also options to specify the resolution of the calculation grid along
the exchanger, convergence parameters, and the convergence levels
188
Thermosiphons
The new features for thermosiphons include additional calculation options,
and improved pipework specification. It is possible either to calculate the
change in inlet resistance needed for a specified thermosiphon flow and head,
or the flow produced by a specified heat and inlet and outlet pipework. A
simpler option, in which the head, resistances and flow are all fixed, is also
possible, leaving the program to predict the any pressure inconsistencies
around the thermosiphon loop.
Pipework can now either be specified in full detail, indicating, individual pipe
lengths, bends, diameter changes manifolds, for both inlet and outlet, or at a
very simple level, specifying pipework losses as a percentage of the driving
pressure head, removing the need for any pipework geometry to be specified.
Internal reboilers, where the exchanger is located within the column sump,
can also be modeled.
Output
There in extensive new tabular and graphical output. The performance and
geometry of the exchanger is recorded, as is the overall performance of each
stream in terms of inlet and outlet conditions. Pressure losses are reported for
nozzles, distributors and main fin, with an analysis of variation across layers,
and the risk of flow mal-distribution.
There are detailed output tables recording the state of each stream at each
calculation point along the exchanger, together with key parameters such as
heat flux, cumulative load, heat transfer coefficients, fin efficiency and
pressure gradients. All these parameters can be displayed in graphical form
for each stream. The graph showing the temperature of all the streams,
together with a mean wall temperature, is a very helpful indicator of
exchanger performance.
There is a diagram of the exchanger in the output, including in Design mode.
Unlike in MUSE, the same output is provided for Simulation and Design
modes. A zigzag diagram is produced whenever a layer pattern is specified,
including sub-diagrams for a set of sections along the length of the
exchanger.
A range of error and warning messages are produced, indicating actual or
potential problems with either the input or calculated results. Even after
errors as many results as possible are displayed, to provide information which
may help avoid the problem in subsequent runs. There is a table giving
information on a set of measures of convergence accuracy for each stream.
Compatibility Notes
Aspen Plate Fin Exchanger V7.1 can be installed and used at the same time as
V7.0 and other previous versions of Aspen EDR products, including Aspen
MUSE.

Equipment within an area will move with the area when the area is

Equipment can not be placed in areas different from their parent areas
(areas they were specified in Aspen Capital Cost Estimator)
Equipment can not be placed on each other, which would violate the
exclusion zone concept unless the area type is specified as OPEN, EXOPEN
or MODULE. If the area type is OPEN, EXOPEN or MODULE, equipment can
be placed on each other, which is assumed to be at different levels (or Z
height coordinates). However, the layout represents a top down view and,
as such, different levels are not isolated within the view.
Area size can be changed by using top and right handles only

should be used above and below the cutoff in Design Basis Equipment Specs.
These selections will be applied in the design ONLY when the design
temperature value is entered in the equipment form (either by the user or as
a result of sizing). If design temperature is not specified for these
components, this feature will not be active. The cutoff design temperature
and the materials selected by user will be applied in the equipment design as
follows:
If the user has entered a shell material in the equipment form, the value
entered in the equipment form will be used.
If the user has NOT entered a design temperature or shell material in the
forms, then default design temperature and shell material below cutoff will
be used (e.g. 650 F and A285C for shell and tube heat exchangers).
If the user has entered a design temperature but NOT entered shell
material, then the shell material below cutoff will be used if equip. design
temperature < cutoff design temperature. If equip. design temperature >
cutoff design temperature, then shell material above cutoff will be used.
Furthermore, previously the default shell material for single and double
diameter towers was A515. This has been changed to A516 to represent
current design specifications. Since the stress properties and costs are
similar for these two materials, existing projects wont be unduly
impacted.

252
These options make it easy for you to find all changes to the default values
and specifications that you have made for review, reporting, or other
purposes.
You can now drag and drop models from the Model Library Menu onto the
flowsheet
Compatibility Notes
Aspen Chromatography V7.0 and V7.1 can be installed and used at the same
time as version 2006.5 and other previous versions of Aspen
Chromatography. However, observe following compatibility issues when
upgrading your existing simulations to V7.0 or V7.1:
The ImpEuler (11.), VSIE (11.1) and Gear (11.1) integrators were old
implementations that have been superseded by the Implicit Euler and
Gear integrators that were introduced in the 12.1 release. They were
included in the 12.1, 2004 and 2004.1 versions to give time for transition
of existing simulations to the new integrators. These integrators have
been withdrawn from version 2006 and later. If you load a simulation that
uses one of these integrators it will automatically switch to using the
equivalent newer integrator, and will select option and tolerance values
that match the old integrator as closely as possible.
253
before V7.0 or V7.1, the compiled flowsheet may not run in Aspen Plus
V7.0 or V7.1. You will need to export the flowsheet again in Aspen
Chromatography V7.0 or V7.1 before you can use it in Aspen Plus.
Supported Compiler(s)

Product Description
Aspen Open Object Model Framework (OOMF) is an AspenTech corporate
component that is used for the configuration, solution and investigation of
large-scale numerical problems. It is embedded within several AspenTech
products such as Aspen Plus, Aspen HYSYS, Aspen HYSYS Petroleum Refining,
HYSYS Upstream, Aspen Advisor, Aspen PIMS, and Aspen MBO.
When OOMF is embedded within a product, users of the product interact with
OOMF via that products graphical user interface. OOMF is also available to
internal AspenTech developers and services professionals as a DOS
executable. These internal users interact with OOMF using the OOMF script
language to create and manipulate simulation data. The OOMF script
language has many of the features of an advanced programming language,
such as mathematical and string functions, if-then-else logic, and for-do
loops. Products that embed OOMF also extend the capabilities of the equation
based scripting language by providing application-specific commands.
OOMF simulations and blocks can now be saved to and restored from
binary compound storage files.
OOMF V7.0 supports generic global data structures, i.e., an OOMF model
can now include equations or inequalities that refer to variables present
within another model.

OOMF simulations and blocks can now be saved to, and restored from,
XML files
Compatibility Notes
Aspen OOMF V7.0 and V7.1 can be installed and used at the same time as
version 2006.5 and other previous versions of Aspen OOMF.
