This was a story that I've been aware of for some time, but never actually gotten round to reading it.
When I saw that a novel based on the story had been released I snapped it up. It's a decent read,
but didn't quite live up to what I'd heard about it.

There were two reasons for this. The first is that overall it was too short. There was plenty of scope
for more development - especially for the first half of the book. The second major issue was that it
was very much a book of two halves. In fact it reminded me of Full Metal Jacket in that the first half
is so good that the second part struggles to shine in comparison. It's not bad by any means, but the
experiment itself captured my imagination more than the aftermath - interesting as it was.
The story is written in a simple, almost brutal style that really carries the story well. I also
appreciated the fact that it let you get to know the characters as a process rather than dumping in all
of the back story.
Despite my issues with it the story is well worth a read, it's a nice idea that is well written and it's a
quick read, so can slip into your TBR easily.

Let me start off by saying that I really enjoyed this book. I'm a super slow reader, but I flew this

written by the same person who wrote the creepypasta. I was not disappointed at all because the
book was great in it's own sense.
The author of the creepypasta is sadly unknown, but it still left Holly Ice with some big shoes to fill.
For the most part, she filled them. While the original story felt out-and-out scary, this novella just had
more of an ominous feel. I read the novella and went right to bed, while the creepypasta kept me
awake one night.
I feel like the author should have made the book in to a novel instead of a novella because if she
had the book would have benefited from more of the story taking place during the experiment. This
part could have been developed more in detail. The good thing about the book is it shows what
happens before and after the experiment including what happened to some of the people who held
the experiment. A lot of this material never appeared in the original story and it made for an
extremely rich reading experience.
I highly recommend this book to horror readers as it's beautifully written and very ominous. To turn a
creepy pasta in to a full length novella takes a lot of talent and Holly ice has it!
*Thanks to Almond Press for providing me with a book to honestly review.

Ok, this was disturbing! In a good way. The idea itself is twisted enough to make you think about it
hard. We all remember that famous line from Fight Club - "You cannot die from insomnia", but what
it might do to your psyche is a whole different story. Add some experimental gas with unknown side
effects and you've got yourself some trouble.

It's a short book and I read it in two short sessions on a plane. In the last part, despite coming back
from Spain and pretty good weather, I was almost shivering from the description of the Siberian
winter, and the fact that the character in that part was trying to fight off a fever just added to the
unsettling feeling in my stomach. I'd say that's a pretty good statement for a horror story.
I liked the conclusion as well - there was drama, there was a resolution, there was even a glimmer of
hope, but not enough to make it a sappy happy ending. The only reason I'm not giving it full 5* is this
key moment of the story when the shit hits the fan (quite literally, too) and my rational mind keeps
saying "It wouldn't have happened like that", but as far as it works to forward the story - it was great.
*SPOILERS FOLLOW*
I just wondered if anyone else who's read it felt the same way about the moment when they go in to
check on the subjects and make a decision to stop the gas.
I thought, first of all, they had microphones in, wouldn't they have heard (or seen shadows, even
through the shit-stained glass) what was happening to Mikhail? But let's attribute that to the fact that
the gas is obviously making them indifferent to pain.
Next thing, why would the lead scientist announce to the subjects of his experiment - who have
obviously taken a really bad turn in this trial and are anything but reasonable humans anymore - that
he's changing their conditions, let alone that he wants to do the opposite of what they want. He
should've just said yes, closed the door and changed the gas to the initial one they used to put them
to sleep. Then once they were asleep, clean up, restrain them, and only then further investigate the
situation. It just sounds like a rookie mistake for top secret Russian mad scientists :)

The Russian Sleep Experiment. Where do I start with this one? Well, perhaps a little bit about the

an experiment in order to gain their freedom. The experiment involves them being locked inside a
room, whilst being fed a gas that will keep them awake for 30 days. What could possibly go wrong?
So thats the synopsis. Lets have a little look at the story.
The story is split into three parts. The first part takes place inside the camps. We get to know the
prisoners and see the selection process for the experiment. Unfortunately very little happens-there is
certainly no sense of dread or tension being built up and whilst the characters are reasonably well
drawn, I still didnt give a rats if they were selected or not. The story picks up (briefly) in the
second act during the experiment when things begin to unravel. Violence erupts; friendships are
tested and faeces are smeared all over the walls! Sadly, things here happen a little abruptly. There
are no real scares or build up whatsoever and the whole act simply felt rushed. The third act is
where the wheels come off. It is truly odd. It feels like an epilogue of sorts but just goes on way too
long, features a different narrator who we know nothing about and to be honest I had lost interest by
this time.
The chapters in this novella are very short and I often found myself ducking in and out of the book
(never a good sign for a novella!). The concept of the Russian Sleep Experiment is terrific; sadly this
book is a not and ends up being a missed opportunity. This novella couldve been a terrifying,
bleak and atmospheric reading experience, but unfortunately it ends up being a disjointed mess with
paper thin characters, no scares and a real lack of direction. I dont like giving bad reviews, but I
felt there was little to get excited about here. Some folk may love it, but for me it was pretty poor.
The Russian Sleep Experiment nearly sent this reader to sleep.
I will try to finish this review with the good stuff: I quite like the artwork. I didnt notice any
obvious editing problems and.and, thats all folks.
Better luck next time, I guess.

In October 2002, Islamist extremists took 850 people hostage in a Moscow theatre demanding the
withdrawal of Russian forces from Chechnya. Authorities came up with a seemingly ingenious plan
to flush out the militants without harming hostages. A chemical gas (thought to be weaponised
fentanyl) was delivered through the buildings ventilation system. Acting effectively as an aerosol
anaesthetic, the bold plan worked to the extent that all forty of the attackers were killed. The
unintended effect however was that 130 hostages also died due to adverse reactions to the gas.
This dramatic event really happened. The situations described in Holly Ices THE RUSSIAN
SLEEP EXPERIMENT are by contrast fictional, yet to the same extent detail what can happen when
a gas experiment involving an undisclosed chemical agent goes disastrously off the rails.
This 122 page novella is an attempt to add extended characterisation to a fictional story that has
been circulating on internet sites (including UrbanLegends.com) for many years which itself sprung
from a series of real life sleep deprivation experiments conducted in late 1940s Soviet Union
Russia.
The storys opening sees political prisoners in a Russian Gulag promised their freedom in
exchange for agreeing to participate in an experiment involving the inhalation of gas that denies
the subject sleep for thirty days. (The Australian National Sleep Research Project lists the
record for observed time without sleep for a human being as 18 days, 21 hours and 40 minutes.)
The four volunteers who step forward are warned the gas is known to have a number of side effects
other than the intended insomnia.
Without going into spoiler alert, its possible to observe that the startling news this week from the
medical fraternity that Alzheimers disease may in fact be contagious and be able to be spread
on contact holds a not entirely unrelated parallel here.
Events are delivered via a first person narrator who changes throughout the story, beginning first
with Mikhail - one of the prisoners - and later moving to Dr Glukhov, the head scientist conducting
the experiment. The language used to unfold events alternates between straightforward and
unadorned to poetic (Valdis put his hands up in surrender but a tick leapt in his brow p58) to
an unfortunate tendency to the melodramatic. A heavy pall, befitting the settings as well as the
theme of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder which emerges in the final third of the story, lingers over

Not so much FROM RUSSIA WITH LOVE but more From Russia with Loathing with an extra
garnishing of madness, paranoia and blisters amply supplied.
Holly Ice, who it should be made clear is in no way related to the West Indian religious rights activist
Holy Water, is an up and coming young writer who is to be applauded for taking on and largely
doing justice to an ambitious and indeed fabled story and writing project such as this.
