Russianresearchersinthelate1940skeptfivepeopleawakeforfifteendaysusinganexperimentalgasbasedstimulant.Theywerekeptinasealedenvironmenttocarefullymonitortheir
oxygenintakesothegasdidn'tkillthem,sinceitwastoxicinhighconcentrations.Thiswasbeforeclosedcircuitcamerassotheyhadonlymicrophonesand5inchthickglassportholesized
windowsintothechambertomonitorthem.Thechamberwasstockedwithbooks,cotstosleeponbutnobedding,runningwaterandtoilet,andenoughdriedfoodtolastallfiveforovera

adarkeraspectafterthe4daymark.
Afterfivedaystheystartedtocomplainaboutthecircumstancesandeventsthatleadthemtowheretheywereandstartedtodemonstratesevereparanoia.Theystoppedtalkingtoeachother
andbeganalternatelywhisperingtothemicrophonesandonewaymirroredportholes.Oddlytheyallseemedtothinktheycouldwinthetrustoftheexperimentersbyturningovertheir
comrades,theothersubjectsincaptivitywiththem.Atfirsttheresearcherssuspectedthiswasaneffectofthegasitself...
Afterninedaysthefirstofthemstartedscreaming.Heranthelengthofthechamberrepeatedlyyellingatthetopofhislungsfor3hoursstraight,hecontinuedattemptingtoscreambutwas
onlyabletoproduceoccasionalsqueaks.Theresearcherspostulatedthathehadphysicallytornhisvocalcords.Themostsurprisingthingaboutthisbehaviorishowtheothercaptivesreacted
toit...orratherdidn'treacttoit.Theycontinuedwhisperingtothemicrophonesuntilthesecondofthecaptivesstartedtoscream.The2nonscreamingcaptivestookthebooksapart,smeared
pageafterpagewiththeirownfecesandpastedthemcalmlyovertheglassportholes.Thescreamingpromptlystopped.
Sodidthewhisperingtothemicrophones.
After3moredayspassed.Theresearcherscheckedthemicrophoneshourlytomakesuretheywereworking,sincetheythoughtitimpossiblethatnosoundcouldbecomingwith5people
inside.Theoxygenconsumptioninthechamberindicatedthatall5muststillbealive.Infactitwastheamountofoxygen5peoplewouldconsumeataveryheavylevelofstrenuousexercise.
Onthemorningofthe14thdaytheresearchersdidsomethingtheysaidtheywouldnotdotogetareactionfromthecaptives,theyusedtheintercominsidethechamber,hopingtoprovoke
anyresponsefromthecaptivestheywereafraidwereeitherdeadorvegetables.
Theyannounced:"Weareopeningthechambertotestthemicrophonesstepawayfromthedoorandlieflatonthefloororyouwillbeshot.Compliancewillearnoneofyouyourimmediate
freedom."
Totheirsurprisetheyheardasinglephraseinacalmvoiceresponse:"Wenolongerwanttobefreed."
Debatebrokeoutamongtheresearchersandthemilitaryforcesfundingtheresearch.Unabletoprovokeanymoreresponseusingtheintercomitwasfinallydecidedtoopenthechamberat
midnightonthefifteenthday.
Thechamberwasflushedofthestimulantgasandfilledwithfreshairandimmediatelyvoicesfromthemicrophonesbegantoobject.3differentvoicesbeganbegging,asifpleadingforthelifeof
lovedonestoturnthegasbackon.Thechamberwasopenedandsoldierssentintoretrievethetestsubjects.Theybegantoscreamlouderthanever,andsodidthesoldierswhentheysaw
whatwasinside.Fourofthefivesubjectswerestillalive,althoughnoonecouldrightlycallthestatethatanyofthemin'life.'
Thefoodrationspastday5hadnotbeensomuchastouched.Therewerechunksofmeatfromthedeadtestsubject'sthighsandcheststuffedintothedraininthecenterofthechamber,
blockingthedrainandallowing4inchesofwatertoaccumulateonthefloor.Preciselyhowmuchofthewateronthefloorwasactuallybloodwasneverdetermined.Allfour'surviving'test
subjectsalsohadlargeportionsofmuscleandskintornawayfromtheirbodies.Thedestructionoffleshandexposedboneontheirfingertipsindicatedthatthewoundswereinflictedbyhand,
notwithteethastheresearchersinitiallythought.Closerexaminationofthepositionandanglesofthewoundsindicatedthatmostifnotallofthemwereselfinflicted.
Theabdominalorgansbelowtheribcageofallfourtestsubjectshadbeenremoved.Whiletheheart,lungsanddiaphragmremainedinplace,theskinandmostofthemusclesattachedtothe

MostofthesoldierswereRussianspecialoperativesatthefacility,butstillmanyrefusedtoreturntothechambertoremovethetestsubjects.Theycontinuedtoscreamtobeleftinthe

gravelyinjuredbyhavinghistesticlesrippedoffandanarteryinhislegseveredbyoneofthesubject'steeth.Another5ofthesoldierslosttheirlivesifyoucountonesthatcommittedsuicidein
theweeksfollowingtheincident.
Inthestruggleoneofthefourlivingsubjectshadhisspleenrupturedandhebledoutalmostimmediately.Themedicalresearchersattemptedtosedatehimbutthisprovedimpossible.Hewas
injectedwithmorethantentimesthehumandoseofamorphinederivativeandstillfoughtlikeacorneredanimal,breakingtheribsandarmofonedoctor.Whenheartwasseentobeatforafull

himunder.Hemanagedtotearmostofthewaythrougha4inchwideleatherstrapononewrist,eventhroughtheweightofa200poundsoldierholdingthatwristaswell.Ittookonlyalittle
moreanestheticthannormaltoputhimunder,andtheinstanthiseyelidsflutteredandclosed,hisheartstopped.Intheautopsyofthetestsubjectthatdiedontheoperatingtableitwasfound

Whenthesurgeryendedthesubjectlookedatthesurgeonandbegantowheezeloudly,attemptingtotalkwhilestruggling.Assumingthismustbesomethingofdrasticimportancethe
surgeonhadapenandpadfetchedsothepatientcouldwritehismessage.Itwassimple."Keepcutting."
Theothertwotestsubjectsweregiventhesamesurgery,bothwithoutanestheticaswell.Althoughtheyhadtobeinjectedwithaparalyticforthedurationoftheoperation.Thesurgeonfoundit
impossibletoperformtheoperationwhilethepatientslaughedcontinuously.Onceparalyzedthesubjectscouldonlyfollowtheattendingresearcherswiththeireyes.Theparalyticclearedtheir
systeminanabnormallyshortperiodoftimeandtheyweresoontryingtoescapetheirbonds.Themomenttheycouldspeaktheywereagainaskingforthestimulantgas.Theresearchers
triedaskingwhytheyhadinjuredthemselves,whytheyhadrippedouttheirowngutsandwhytheywantedtobegiventhegasagain.

surprise.Theywerenormalmostofthetimebutsometimesflatlinedinexplicably.Itlookedasifhewererepeatedlysufferingbraindeath,beforereturningtonormal.Astheyfocusedonpaper
scrollingoutofthebrainwavemonitoronlyonenursesawhiseyesslipshutatthesamemomenthisheadhitthepillow.Hisbrainwavesimmediatelychangedtothatofdeepsleep,then
flatlinedforthelasttimeashisheartsimultaneouslystopped.
Theonlyremainingsubjectthatcouldspeakstartedscreamingtobesealedinnow.Hisbrainwavesshowedthesameflatlinesasonewhohadjustdiedfromfallingasleep.Thecommander
gavetheordertosealthechamberwithbothsubjectsinside,aswellas3researchers.Oneofthenamedthreeimmediatelydrewhisgunandshotthecommanderpointblankbetweenthe
eyes,thenturnedthegunonthemutesubjectandblewhisbrainsoutaswell.
Hepointedhisgunattheremainingsubject,stillrestrainedtoabedastheremainingmembersofthemedicalandresearchteamfledtheroom."Iwon'tbelockedinherewiththesethings!Not
