Whenweldingcopperconductors,theprocessemploysasemipermanentgraphitecruciblemould,inwhichthemoltencopper,producedby
thereaction,flowsthroughthemouldandoverandaroundtheconductorstobewelded,forminganelectricallyconductiveweldbetween
them.Whenthecoppercools,themouldiseitherbrokenofforleftinplace.Alternatively,handheldgraphitecruciblescanbeused.The
advantagesofthesecruciblesincludeportability,lowercost(becausetheycanbereused),andflexibility,especiallyinfieldapplications.
Theweldformedhashighermechanicalstrengththanotherformsofweld,andexcellentcorrosionresistance.Itisalsohighlystablewhen
subjecttorepeatedshortcircuitpulses,anddoesnotsufferfromincreasedelectricalresistanceoverthelifetimeoftheinstallation.
However,theprocessiscostlyrelativetootherweldingprocesses,requiresasupplyofreplaceablemoulds,suffersfromalackof

TheExothermicWeldingSystemisaweldingprocessthatutilizesanexothermicreaction(achemicalreactionthatreleasesenergyin
theformofveryhightemperaturesandlight)topermanentlyjoinmetalconnections.ExothermicWeldingusesalightweight,clampon
graphitemoldtosafelypositionandcontainsanyweldrequired.Theexothermicreactioncreatesanintenseminiaturefurnacewith
temperaturesexceeding2,500F,instantlyproducingmoltenmetalwhichflowsintotheweldcavity,fillinganyavailablespace.After
waitingadequatetimeaftertheinitialprocess,themoldcanbereleasedandthefinishedconnectionremoved.

WhyUseExothermicWelding:
TheExothermicConnectingcreatedapermanent,homeogreneous,andmolecularbondthatcannotloosenorcorrode,andwillcarrymore
currentthattheconductor.TheExothermicWeldingConnectionaresolidmolecularbonds,theydonotloosenorcorrodeoverthelifetime
ofconnection.Theamecannotbesaidaboutothermethodssuchasbrazing,crimp,splitbolt,orcompreiontypeconnections.

Theproductsarealuminiumoxide,freeelementaliron,andalargeamountofheat.Thereactantsarecommonlypowderedandmixedwith
abindertokeepthematerialsolidandpreventseparation.Commonlythereactingcompositionis5partsironoxidered(rust)powderand
3partsaluminiumpowderbyweight,ignitedathightemperatures.Astronglyexothermic(heatgenerating)reactionoccursthatvia
reductionandoxidationproducesawhitehotmassofmoltenironandaslagofrefractoryaluminiumoxide.Themoltenironistheactual
weldingmaterialthealuminiumoxideismuchlessdensethantheliquidironandsofloatstothetopofthereaction,sothesetupfor
weldingmusttakeintoaccountthattheactualmoltenmetalisatthebottomofthecrucibleandcoveredbyfloatingslag.
Othermetaloxidescanbeused,suchaschromiumoxide,togeneratethegivenmetalinitselementalform.Copperthermite,usingcopper
