isfamousforitsdenseevergreen,semievergreen,moist
deciduousforestsandsavannagrasslands.Itishometo
herdsofelephants,sambar,tigers,gaur,liontailed
macaquesandNilgirilangurs.
ThePeriyarWildlifeSanctuaryisspreadacross777km2
(300sqmi),ofwhich360km2(140sqmi)isthick
evergreenforest.Thewildlifesanctuarywasdeclareda
tigerreservein1978.Thesplendidartificiallakeformed
bytheMullaperiyarDamacrossthePeriyarRiveraddsto
thecharmofthepark.ThegreatestattractionsofPeriyar
aretheherdsofwildelephants,deerandbisonthatcome
downtodrinkinthelake.Thesanctuarycanbeaccessed
throughatrekking,boatingorjeepsafari.
