D+C=R
Decoding + Comprehension = Reading
D (Strategy + Knowledge) + C (Strategy + Knowledge) = Reading (Is affected by
whether children are reading to and whether they are being read at).
Comprehension Strategy
Comprehension Knowledge Vocab. ESOL children will struggle with this area Oral
Language/Home whether reading is done at home.

The more risk factors, the more complex reading will be.
A lot of children even at the higher end of the school are falling down on basic skills.

Guided Reading
During Guided Reading, we need to be identifying the childrens strategies and
knowledge. This helps us to see what their strengths and weaknesses are.

Adjust your teaching as you go.

Stopping in the lesson and doing a mini lesson or add it in afterwards or putting

it in next time. Eg Next time I will teach this in Phonics or in a group situation.
Perhaps you put in a smaller lesson for a small number of children.
Put the teaching point into Word work or in Spelling (home spelling or an app).

Activities examples
Cloze activity: Blank out words in a guided reading book and give the children the
activity to fill in the missing words. Could give children two options for which word its
going to be and the next stage would be giving them the start letter and the children
have to work out the word using all the strategies they know.

When teaching hard g/soft g and hard c/soft c, take some flashcards. Eg Put on ci, ce,
cy, cr, ch, cl, cu, ca. Then hold the cards up and get the children to say the sound the
first letter is making. Mix the cards up and children make the first sound of the c.
Do it for g aswell. Start off with individual sounds and then mix up the letter cards.

A diphthong is two letters that make one sound but they dont make either the soft or
hard vowel sound.

Flip the Sound

Pick up words that children are getting stuck on. Eg name (n.a.m.e flip the sound
nam/e)
Tiger Rule Children go in and write c v c v c (when children get the vcv, children say
the long sound).
Camel Rule Children go in and write cvcvc (Try tiger first and if it doesnt make a
word, try camel).
