THE SCHOOL COMMUNITY and MISSION STATEMENT

The International School of Luxembourg (ISL) is an independent, non-profit, university-preparatory day school
situated in the city of Luxembourg, capital of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg. ISL offers a high quality Englishlanguage education for children of both international and local families living in Luxembourg and the surrounding
area. The school is divided into two divisions of similar size: the Lower School and the Upper School, which
includes Middle School and High School sections. Total school enrolment is approximately 1200, with 400
students in the High School (Grades 9-12). Forty-five nationalities are found in the student population with 50%
of students coming from mainland Europe. The countries with the largest enrolment are the USA (15%) and the
UK (10%). ISLs mission is to provide an outstanding education in a caring international environment, inspiring
all our students to reach their true potential and to act as responsible participants in a global society.

ACCREDITATION AND MEMBERSHIPS

ISL is accredited by the Council of International Schools and by the Middle States Association of Colleges and
Schools. Memberships are held in the International Baccalaureate Organization (IBO), the National Association of
Independent Schools (NAIS), the National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP), and the National
Association for College Admissions Counseling (NACAC).

SCHOOL CALENDAR
The academic year runs from late August to late June and is divided into three trimesters.
- 1st Trimester: 26 August-27 November, 2nd Trimester: 30 November-11 March, 3rd Trimester: 14 March-22 June.
-

High School Graduation: 4 June 2016.

GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS DIPLOMAS AWARDED

ISL offers a standards-based university preparatory curriculum leading to the International Baccalaureate (IB)
Diploma or IB Diploma Programme Courses and the ISL High School Diploma.

International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma

The objectives of the IB are to provide students with a balanced education, to facilitate geographic and cultural
mobility and to promote international understanding through a shared academic experience. The International
Baccalaureate is a rigorous two-year academic programme offered in Grades 11-12 which consists of six subjects,
an extended essay, a Theory of Knowledge course, and a Creativity, Activity and Service component. The successful
completion of these requirements results in the IB Diploma, which is an internationally recognized credential for
university entrance.

IB Diploma Programme Courses

Students who do not opt for the full IB Diploma may elect to sit IB examinations for selected subjects.

ISL High School Diploma

All students must earn a minimum of 23 credits which include the following subjects: English: 4, Mathematics:
4, Social Studies: 3, Science: 3, Modern Languages: 3, other subjects: 6. Each credit comprises the successful
completion of a full years course. In addition, a minimum of 15 hours of community service per year (grade 9-12)
is also required.

UpdatedSeptember2015

GRADE POINT AVERAGE & CLASS RANK POLICY
Class rank and grade point averages (GPA) are not computed because of the transient nature of the ISL community
and diversity of educational backgrounds of students entering the school during the high school years.

ISL GRADING SYSTEM

The ISL grading system complies with the assessment scheme of the criterion-referenced International
Baccalaureate (IB) whereby student performance is measured against specific learning outcomes. IB assessments
are scored from 7 (excellent) to 1 (very poor). Students enrol in courses for the full school year and academic
achievement is evaluated on a trimester basis in November, March and June. Academic credit for high school
diploma purposes is granted for all courses in which the students achievement level ranges from 3 to 7. No credit
is awarded for grades of 1 or 2. Grades are not weighted.

International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE), Grades 9 & 10

Cambridge IGCSE is the worlds most popular international qualification for 14 to 16 year olds. It is recognised
by leading universities and employers worldwide. ISL currently offers IGCSEs in Mathematics (International and
Additional), Science Double award, English Language and English Literature, Physical Education, French and
German Language (First & Foreign Language), Music and Art. All courses are offered at the extended level at ISL.
Externally graded examinations take place at the end of the course and assessment includes written, oral and
practical work. The courses are designed as preparation for post-16 education, including the International
Baccalaureate Diploma. IGCSEs encourage an inquiry-based approach to student learning, promoting visible
thinking skills, problem solving and intellectual curiosity.
