6. Prior Knowledge
a. In the previous lesson, students have learned how to solve
multistep problems. Even before that students have been reviewing two step
word problems.
7. Lesson Beginning
a. After reviewing homework, students will be given a problem of the
day.
i.
An employee earns $16.40 per hour and works 35
hours per week. If $54.20 are deducted for taxes and there are $67.55
in other deductions, what amount (a) remains from each weekly
paycheck?
8. Instructional Plan
a. Teacher will have a student volunteer to work through the answer
of the problem of the day.
b. Teacher will have one student write down the objective of the day
onto the Objective Sheet for display. Teacher will review the objective.
c. I Do:
i.
Teacher will then work through Student Activity
Book page 207 discussing problem number 1.
ii.
Teacher will ask students questions such as:
1. Does the order matter? Why?
2. What operation comes first?
3. Is there another way to solve this
problem with a smaller equation?

d. We Do:
i.
Teacher and students will work together to solve
problem 2 on page 207 and Whats the Error? on page 208.
e. You Do:
i.
Students will then break off into groups of 4 in order
to complete problems 3 and 4 on page 207 and page 208 problems 5, 6
and 7. Students will also be given an answer key with post its hiding the
answers. In their groups, students will discuss their methods of finding
the answer and try to solve the answer. Once they agree on an answer,
they will check the answer and review their methods if wrong. Students
will be told they are given 20 minutes to work.
ii.
After the 20 minutes, students will gather at the
carpet to review their answers. Each group will present a problem at the
board to inform their classmates on how they solved the problem.
f. Differentiation:
i.
Early finishers: Those who finish early can start to
work on their homework.
ii.
Those who need extra help: Teacher will be
circulating the room, and will work with any groups who need assistance.
g. Questions:
i.
Is there another way we could had solved this
problem?
h. Classroom Management:
i.
Seating Arrangement: Students will gather on the
carpet for whole group, and once whole group is over have free range of
the classroom.
ii.
Distribution of Materials: Students will be told to
bring whiteboard and marker to the carpet, and have their math
notebooks at their desk.
i. Transitions: Students will be told explicit directions on the times
that are given for assignments.
9. Closure
a. Ten minutes before the end of class, homework will be assigned.
The teacher will review the objective and students will be asked whether or not
they achieved the objective of the day. Their exit ticket will be to describe how to
solve a multistep problem in their own words.
