Students in Science

Gone are the days when traditional students

carry only school supplies with them in
schoolnow a days with gadgets too!

Why pursue this study?

There has been an increase in the number of social media

users around the world which dominated by students.
The increase in number of students using facebook is
feared by many researchers to affect the scholastic
performance of its student users.
Philippines is considered as social nation because of its
enormous social media users. Large part of its total social
media populace are students.
Over the years agency monitoring the scholastic
performance of students through standardized test like
TIMSS had observed a very low performance of the
Philippines in STEM subjects which includes Science.
San Roque National High School has observed a decreasing
trend in the NAT result in science for 2 consecutive years
(2013, MPS= 64) & (2014, MPS=50). The years of
decreased NAT results are also the years of the increase of

Note: When r-value is greater than or equal to 0.01 or less than or equal
to 0.30 means weak relationship between variable. Negative r-value
means negative or inverse relationship between variables. P-value
greater than the 5% alpha means the study fail to reject the H 0
hypothesis.

CONCLUSION
After gathering all the data and doing the
analysis, the researcher concludes that social
media addiction alone is insignificantly related
to students scholastic performance. Though
the study gathered insufficient data to prove
the hypothesis, yet it strengthens the claims
of Maslows theory of motivation and Turel and
Serenkos
Socio-cognitive
model.
Both
theories emphasize that the students
prevalent addiction to social media are caused
by their pursuit of fulfilling their social needs.
