The20thcenturyisagenerationthatwasaffectedbyWorldWar1
experiences.Atimewherenewtechnologyandweaponswerepresentedtoabattlefield.Which
broughtanewconceptofhowpeoplefoughtinthewar,andhowitaffectedthosewhosawall
thesenewadvances.Thisgenerationwaslateronknownasthe
LostGeneration
assaidby
writerGertrudeSteinwhilehavingadiscussionwithErnestHemingway.GertrudesaidYou
areallaLostGeneration.Thegenerationbornbetween1883and1900thatcameofageduring
thistimebecameknownastheLostGeneration(Jaracz1).Menwhofoughtinthewarcame
homeaffectedfromwhattheysaw.Alltheblood,andviolencesomethingthatcouldn'tgetoff
theirminds.Thierexperiencemadeithardtogetbackontheirfeet.Itchangedthewaytheyview
life,people,love,andhobbies.Thosewhocamehomewereprofoundlyaffectedbytheirwar
experience.Feelingcynicalabouthumanity'sprospects,theyrebelledagainstthevaluesoftheir
elders,seekingdebaucheryinsteadofdecency,andhedonisminsteadofideology(Jaracz1).
TheLostGenerationwasfullofdisillusion,whichiswhyGertrudeSteinexplainshowthis
generationwasa
LostGeneration
.Afterthesoldiersreturnedhome,governmentsstarted
ignoringtheirheroes,whichcausedtheveteranstobecomequicklydisillusionedwith
government(Jaracz1).Shesawmenwerelost,mentallyandemotionallylost.Theyhadno
motivation,theydidntknowwhattodonext.Manymenwerentreadytofacethewarwith

new,advancedweapons.Suchasthechemicalwarfare,machineguns,airplanes,ballturret
gunner,andmuchmore.Thesemenwereexpectingtogetsomethingelsefromthewar.
ThisLostGenerationalsobroughtahugeimpacttomanywriterssuchasErnest
Hemingway.Whoalsoexplainsdisillusionmentinthepeopleduringthattimeinmanyofhis
shortstories.Hemingwaywrotemanyrelationshipstoriessuchas
AVeryShortStory,
which
explainsthedisillusionmentofthemaincharacter(He)andthelover(Luz).Whoexpectedtoget
togetherandgetmarried,butthingswentanotherwaybythetimeLuzand
He
separateddueto
work.LuzmetanItalianwhoshenoticedshelovedandwantedtogetmarriedwithhim.She
expected,absolutelyunexpectedly,tobemarriedinthespring.Sheloved
him
asalways,butshe
realizednowitwasonlyaboyandgirllove.Shehoped
he
wouldhaveagreatcareerand
believedin
him
absolutely(Hemingway6).Luzsletterbroke
his
heartandendedthe
relationship,theplansofgettingtogethertogetmarriedwereruined,duetoLuzmeetinganother
man.ItshowshowErnestHemingwayshoweddisillusionbetweenthecharactersLuzand
he
.
Themajordidnotmarryherinthespring,oranyothertimeAshorttimeafter,
he
contracted
gonorrheafromasalesgirlinaloopdepartmentstorewhileridinginataxicabthroughLincoln
Park(Hemingway7).ErnestHemingwaymadethereaderbelieveitwasgoingtobeahappy,
lovestorybutitendedinaresultofLuznotgettingmarriedatall,hernotmarryingarichman
asshewanted.Attheendofthestoryshefeltasifsheknewshelet
him
slipawaysincethe
ItalianguydidnotmarryLuz.Sheendedupwiththedisillusionmentofmarriageandlove.
He
endedupheartbroken,andgettingadiseasethatissomethinghedidnotexpecttoget,afterbeing
withanothergirltomakehimselffeelbetter.WhichistheresultofmanypeopleduringtheLost
Generation,notknowingwhattodonext.Notknowinghowtogetbackup,tostaystrong,and

howtomoveonmillionsofmenhadbeenaffectedbythehorrorsofbattle,losingasenseof
thevaluestheirparentshadinstilledinthem(Jaracz2).Lostfaithinmanyvales,ideas,and
beliefsthatgavelifemeaningbeforethewar.
AnotherHemingwaystorythatshoweddisillusionwas
TheEndOfSomething.
Whereit
showedarelationshiponitsbreakingpoints.MarjorieandNickarethemaincharactersandhave
beentogetherforalongtime.Marjorieistheonetryingtosavetherelationshiportryingtogetit
backonitsfeetbutNickistheonewhoseemstomakeithardtoletgo,butknowshehasto.
Theresgoingtobeamoontonight,saidNick.Helookedacrossthebaytothehillsthatwere
beginningtosharpenagainstthesky.Beyondthehillsheknewthemoonwascomingup.I
knowit,Marjoriesaidhappily.Youknoweverything,NicksaidIvetaughtyou
everything.Youknowyoudo.Whatdontyouknow,anyway?Oh,shutup,Marjoriesaid.
Therecomesthemoon(Hemingway3).Thisshowstheturningthepoint,ofhowquietNick
was,toexpressinghisfeelingsabouttherelationship.Whichwasboredom.Nickwasboredwith
therelationship,hewantedanewadventure,ormaybehewastiredthattherewasntanything
leftforhimtoshowher.Thatissomethingthatbotheredhim.Butheseemsthathewasntready
tocompletelyletgooftheirrelationship.Didshegoallright?Billsaid.Yes,Nicksaid,
lyinghisfaceontheblanket.haveascene?No,therewasntanyscene.Howdoyoufeel?
Oh,goaway,Bill!Goawayforawhile(Hemingway4).Nickhadthedisillusionmentofthis
dategoingwellhefeltdisillusionedbecausehethoughthecouldlethergoeasy,turnedouthe
seemedmorehurtthanher.Eventhoughbothsawitcoming,Marjorieleftthescenenotthinking
aboutit,takingtheboat,andleavingwithoutaskinghimforaverydetailedexplanation.Im
goingtotaketheboat,Marjoriecalledtohim.Youcanwalkbackaroundthepoint

(Hemingway4).ThisshowshowMarjorieisbeingindependent,andNickbeinghurt.Whichis
howmanypeopleintheLostGenerationfelt.Independentyethurtfromwhattheyexperienced
andnotknowingwhattodo.WhichgoesbacktotheideaofbeinglostHemingwayexplained
howthesescharactersareliketheLostGenerationbybeinginashellandnotexpressingtheir
completefeelings.ItshowedhowtheLostGenerationandthecharactersarefullof
disillusionment,becausetheycouldhaveendedupwithabetterendingstillhavingalovefor
eachother,orothers.Insteadtheyfinishbynotknowingwheretheyareintheirrelationship,or
life.Notfindingaplacetostartwheretheyleftofffeelinglostandscaredfromwhatsoldiers
havegonethroughduringtheirwartime.Whichshowshowthosewhohadwives,orgirlfriends
waitingforthembackhomewouldtaketimetogetbackinthepositiontheywere,withtheir
lovedone.Itsasiftheywerenotthesameanymore.Nothavingthesameconnectiontheydid
beforetheywenttowar.Disillusionmentoflifeandrelationships.
DorothyParkerspoemsalsoshowedthedisillusionmentoflove.Suchasthepoem
IndianSummer
shewritesAnddothethingsIdoAndifyoudonotlikemeso,Tohell,my
love,withyou!(Parker68).WhichshowsifyoudonotacceptmeforwhoIam,thenyour
loveisnottruelove.GoingontowhereitshowsthatDorothyisveryindependent,andsame
withtheLostGeneration.themembersoftheLostGenerationbecameindependentand
selfsufficient,notlookingtotheireldersforguidance.(Jaracz2).TheLostGenerationbecame
independentduetonotwantingtogoback,wantingtobeginagainwiththeirownrulesandown
ideas.Whichiswhymanysoldierscameback,andkepttravelingaroundtheworld,insteadof
goinghome,becausetheydidnotknowhowtobeginagain.MembersoftheLostGeneration
werealsonomadic.Manywhohadbeentowarnolongerfelttheneedtoreturnhome,instead

flockingtocitiesandeventoEurope.Parisbecameoneofthebiggestoutpostsforexpatriates,
anditbecameacenterforliteraryachievementoftheday(Jaracz2).Theyneededsomething
new.
Parkerspoemsshowedthesadnessinher,becauseofdisillusioninlove.Notfindingtrue
love,whichsometimesaffectsherselfesteem.Forexampleinthepoem
AFairlySadTale
she
writesAroundme,othergirlsinspire.Inmentherushandroaroffire,...ButmeIdontknow
howtoplanit.TheladsIvemetinCupidsdeadlockWereShallIsay?bornoutofwedlock.
Theybrokemyheart,theystilledmysong,Andsaidtheyhadtorunalong(Parker312),
showinghowshecouldnotflirt,orseducementhesamewayotherwomenwould.Butyettalks
abouthowmenshethoughtsheloved,wouldalwaysendupbreakingherheart.Parkeralso
showedshewasindependentbycallingherexboyfriends
bastards
.ShallIsay?bornoutof
wedlock(Parker10).ThesamewaytheLostGenerationfeltwithlowselfesteem.Fullof
sadness,notknowingwhypeopleactdifferentlyaroundthem.Nothavingthesamefeelingsfor
anotherperson,beingaffectedmentallyandemotionally.Whichwouldbringpeople's
selfesteemsdownwantingtomakethemselvesmoreindependent,tonotbehurtasmuch.
Tryingtofindanewplace,tobuildorstarttheirrelationshipagain.Awayfrompeoplethat
mightjudgethem,forwhotheyarenow.
ErnestHemingwayandDorothyParker,couldshowhowtheirwritingspokeaboutthe
LostGeneration.TheLostGenerationwasfullofdisillusionment,manysoldiersneverthought
theirexperiencesfromthewar,wouldimpactthememotionally,andmentally.Thierexperiences
leftthemlostintheirownworldandnotknowinghowtostartagain.Gettingboredeasily,and
wantingtotravelmorethanonce,beingindependentandgoingbytheirownideas.Notwanting

togoback,home.Alltheycaredaboutwasfindinganewwaytostarttheirlivesagain,from
scratch.WhichishowHemingwayexpressedhischaractersfeelings.Sadandlost,notknowing
wheretostartagain,whichistheexampleofLuzand
he

AVeryShortStory
.Bothbeing
heartbrokenandnotgettingwhattheywanted,showingtheiremotionswerelostforeachother.
Luzrealizingthatshelet

slipaway.Alsoin
TheEndOfSomething,
whichshowshowNick
gotboredintherelationship.WhileMarjorieshowedhowindependentshewasbyleavingthe
scenewithnoquestionsasked.ThisshowshowHemingwayconnectedwiththeLostGeneration
bysoldierstravelingandalwayslookingforsomethingnew,theytriedtokeepthemselves
occupied.Butalsoindependently,creatingtheirownideas.Marjorieideasofbeingindependent
iswhatDorothyParkerspoemsrepresented.Forexamplethepoem
IndianSummer
represents
howimportantitisforthepersonyouarewith,toloveyouforwhoyouare.Butalsostaying
strong,fullofexpressionandenrichment.Whichishowpeoplearetoday.Ourgenerationcan
nowexpressitselffortheirownideasjustlikeDorothyParker.Sheexpressedherfeelings,and
wedotoo.Today,peoplearebecomingmoreandmoreindependenteachday.Forthemistakes
theydo,ortheirownlifeexperiences.Wearemoreprotective,andabletorealizewhatscoming
nextforus.Yetweprepareforanything,sowedontendupfullofdisillusionment.
Disillusionmentinlove,life,beliefsandfaith.
