Holy Communion (ELW 3)

THE ORDER OF WORSHIP

PRELUDE Special Music-Summer Music Series Dedicated to my wife,
Jill Moneypenny, to honor our (Nov. 2016) 20th year wedding anniversary
CONFESSION OF SINS AND PROCLAMATION OF FORGIVENESS

In the name of the Father, and of the (+) Son, and of the Holy Spirit.
Amen.
INTRODUCTION
This Sunday and its texts call us to ask, Whose disciples are we? or
Who or what controls our lives? Children live under the discipline of
their parents, Israel was caught between the authority of God and of the
royal family. Jesus frees a man controlled by unclean spirits. Jesus frees us,
like that man, from the power of sin. In Christ we are freed to worship God,
to love others, to live abundantly. You are freed by Christ and sent to share
with others how much God has done for you.
CHILDREN are always welcome to our Worship Service. Rainbow bags
and a cry room are available. A staffed nursery is also available if needed.
An usher will gladly provide you with assistance.
As a worship courtesy, we ask that you please turn off or set to vibrate
all cellular telephones and pagers during the worship service.
We ask that all present today please fill out the Attendance and Communion
registration card found in your bulletin and place it in the offering plate so
that we may record your presence with us.
PRAYER UPON ENTERING THE PEW
Almighty God, our heavenly Father, you create and form us through our
families. We commend them into your care and we bless you especially
today for our fathers. Fill them with faith, hope, charity, courage, prudence,
justice, and wisdom. Help us to help them be excellent. Knit spouses
together in enduring affection. Let children and parents have full respect for
one another and light the fire of affection among us all. We pray through
Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen.

Let us pray.
Almighty God, to whom all hearts are open, all desires known, and from
whom no secrets are hid: cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the
inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you and worthily
magnify your holy name, through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen.
Let us confess our sins.
Silence for reflection and self-examination.
Gracious God,
We confess that we have turned in toward ourselves and have turned
away from you and from our neighbors. We are truly sorry and
humbly repent. In your compassion forgive us our sins, known and
unknown, things we have done and things we have failed to do. Turn us
again to you and uphold us by your Spirit, so that we may live and
serve you in newness of life through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord.
Amen.
God, who is rich in mercy, loved us even when we were dead in sin, and
made us alive together with Christ. In the name of Jesus Christ, your sins
are forgiven. By grace you have been saved. Almighty God give you faith
through the Holy Spirit that Christ may live in your hearts and that his love
may show forth the love of Christ in your lives.
Amen.
GATHERING SONG:

Faith of Our Fathers (ELW 812)

GREETING
The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of
the Holy Spirit be with you all!
And also with you!
CANTICLE OF PRAISE

PRAYER OF THE DAY

Let us pray.
O Lord God, we bring before you the cries of a sorrowing world. In your
mercy set us free from the chains that bind us, and defend us from
everything that is evil, through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord.
Amen.
Please be seated.
A MESSAGE FOR OUR CHILDREN
FIRST READING: 1 Kings 19:1-4 [5-7] 8-15a
1

Ahab told Jezebel all that Elijah had done, and how he had killed all the
prophets with the sword. 2Then Jezebel sent a messenger to Elijah, saying,
So may the gods do to me, and more also, if I do not make your life like
the life of one of them by this time tomorrow.3Then he was afraid; he got
up and fled for his life, and came to Beer-sheba, which belongs to Judah; he
left his servant there.
4But he himself went a days journey into the wilderness, and came and
sat down under a solitary broom tree. He asked that he might die: It is
enough; now, O LORD, take away my life, for I am no better than my
ancestors. [5Then he lay down under the broom tree and fell asleep.
Suddenly an angel touched him and said to him, Get up and eat. 6He
looked, and there at his head was a cake baked on hot stones, and a jar of
water. He ate and drank, and lay down again. 7The angel of the LORD came
a second time, touched him, and said, Get up and eat, otherwise the
journey will be too much for you. ] 8He got up, and ate and drank; then he
went in the strength of that food forty days and forty nights to Horeb the
mount of God. 9At that place he came to a cave, and spent the night there.
Then the word of the LORD came to him, saying, What are you doing
here, Elijah? 10He answered, I have been very zealous for the LORD, the
God of hosts; for the Israelites have forsaken your covenant, thrown down
your altars, and killed your prophets with the sword. I alone am left, and
they are seeking my life, to take it away.
11He said, Go out and stand on the mountain before the LORD, for

the LORD is about to pass by. Now there was a great wind, so strong that it
was splitting mountains and breaking rocks in pieces before the LORD, but
the LORD was not in the wind; and after the wind an earthquake, but
the LORD was not in the earthquake; 12and after the earthquake a fire, but
the LORD was not in the fire; and after the fire a sound of sheer
silence. 13When Elijah heard it, he wrapped his face in his mantle and went
out and stood at the entrance of the cave. Then there came a voice to him
that said, What are you doing here, Elijah?14He answered, I have been
very zealous for the LORD, the God of hosts; for the Israelites have forsaken
your covenant, thrown down your altars, and killed your prophets with the
sword. I alone am left, and they are seeking my life, to take it
away. 15aThen the LORD said to him, Go, return on your way to the
wilderness of Damascus.

SECOND READING: Galatians 3:23-29

23

Now before faith came, we were imprisoned and guarded under the law
until faith would be revealed. 24Therefore the law was our disciplinarian
until Christ came, so that we might be justified by faith. 25But now that faith
has come, we are no longer subject to a disciplinarian, 26for in Christ Jesus
you are all children of God through faith. 27As many of you as were
baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ. 28There is no
longer Jew or Greek, there is no longer slave or free, there is no longer
male and female; for all of you are one in Christ Jesus. 29And if you belong
to Christ, then you are Abrahams offspring, heirs according to the promise.
The word of the Lord.
Thanks be to God.

The word of the Lord.

Thanks be to God.

Please stand for the reading of the gospel.

GOSPEL ACCLAMATION

Psalm 42

Paraphrase: As the Deer Runs to the River (ELW 331)

VERSE: Return | to your home,*

And declare how much God has |done for you. (Luke 8:29)
GOSPEL: Luke 8:26-39
The holy gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ, according to Luke.
Glory to you, O Lord.
26

Then [Jesus and his disciples] arrived at the country of the

Gerasenes, which is opposite Galilee. 27As he stepped out on land, a man of
the city who had demons met him. For a long time he had worn no clothes,
and he did not live in a house but in the tombs. 28When he saw Jesus, he fell
down before him and shouted at the top of his voice, What have you to do
with me, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? I beg you, do not torment
me29for Jesus had commanded the unclean spirit to come out of the

man. (For many times it had seized him; he was kept under guard and
bound with chains and shackles, but he would break the bonds and be
driven by the demon into the wilds.)30Jesus then asked him, What is your
name? He said, Legion; for many demons had entered him. 31They
begged him not to order them to go back into the abyss.
32Now there on the hillside a large herd of swine was feeding; and the
demons begged Jesus to let them enter these. So he gave them
permission. 33Then the demons came out of the man and entered the swine,
and the herd rushed down the steep bank into the lake and was drowned.
34When the swineherds saw what had happened, they ran off and told it
in the city and in the country. 35Then people came out to see what had
happened, and when they came to Jesus, they found the man from whom
the demons had gone sitting at the feet of Jesus, clothed and in his right
mind. And they were afraid. 36Those who had seen it told them how the one
who had been possessed by demons had been healed. 37Then all the people
of the surrounding country of the Gerasenes asked Jesus to leave them; for
they were seized with great fear. So he got into the boat and returned. 38The
man from whom the demons had gone begged that he might be with him;
but Jesus sent him away, saying, 39Return to your home, and declare how
much God has done for you. So he went away, proclaiming throughout the
city how much Jesus had done for him.
The gospel of the Lord.
Praise to you, O Christ.
Please be seated.
SERMON Pastor Charles Peterson

The presiding minister may continue with prayer.

Let us pray.
Merciful God, we thank you for these sisters and brothers, whom you have
made your own by water and the Word in baptism. You have called them to
yourself, enlightened them with the gifts of your Spirit, and nourished them
in the community of faith. Uphold your servants in the gifts and promises
of baptism, and unite the hearts of all whom you have brought to new birth.
We ask this in the name of Christ.
Amen.
I ask you to profess your faith in Christ Jesus, reject sin, and confess the
faith of the church.
Do you renounce the devil and all the forces that defy God?
Response:
I renounce them.
Do you renounce the powers of this world that rebel against God?
Response:
I renounce them.
Do you renounce the ways of sin that draw you from God?
Response:
I renounce them.
The presiding minister addresses the candidates and the assembly.
Do you believe in God the Father?
I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth.

Please stand to sing.

HYMN OF THE DAY: Borning Cry (ELW 732)
AFFIRMATION OF BAPTISM
Dear friends, we give thanks for the gift of baptism and for these people,
one with us in the body of Christ, who are making public affirmation of
their baptism.
Those making affirmation are presented by a sponsor or another
representative of the congregation:
I present Sarah Bender, Stefan Luebkemann, Ann Rockne, Carol and
Robert Roth, who desire to make public affirmation of their baptism.

Do you believe in Jesus Christ, the Son of God?

I believe in Jesus Christ, Gods only Son, our Lord, who was conceived
by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius
Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead.
On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at
the right hand of the Father, and he will come to judge the living and
the dead.
Do you believe in God the Holy Spirit?
I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of
saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life
everlasting.

PRAYERS OF INTERCESSION
Let us pray for those who are affirming their Baptism, and for all the
baptized everywhere, and for all of Gods creation:
Silence for reflection.
Each petition ends with:
Lord, in your mercy,
hear our prayer.

A representative of the congregation addresses the assembly.

Let us rejoice with these sisters and brothers in Christ.
We rejoice with you in the life of baptism. Together we will give thanks
and praise to God and proclaim the good news to all the world.
PEACE
The peace of Christ be with you always.
And also with you.
ANNOUNCEMENTS

Into your hands, O Lord, we commend all for whom we pray, trusting in
your mercy, through your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
The presiding minister addresses those making public affirmation of
baptism.
You have made public profession of your faith. Do you intend to continue
in the covenant God made with you in holy baptism:
to live among Gods faithful people,
to hear the word of God and share in the Lords supper,
to proclaim the good news of God in Christ through word and deed,
to serve all people, following the example of Jesus,
and to strive for justice and peace in all the earth?

OFFERTORY HYMN:

Each person responds:

I do, and I ask God to help and guide me.
The minister addresses the assembly.
People of God, do you promise to support these sisters and brothers and
pray for them in their life in Christ?
We do, and we ask God to help and guide us.
The presiding minister prays for Gods blessing.
Let us pray.
We give you thanks, O God, that through water and the Holy Spirit you
give us new birth, cleanse us from sin, and raise us to eternal life.
The blessing may be repeated for each person. The minister may lay both
hands on the head of the person and say:
Father in heaven, for Jesus sake, stir up in Sarah, Stefan, Ann, Carol,
Robert the gift of your Holy Spirit; confirm her/his faith, guide her/his life,
empower her/him in her/his serving, give her/him patience in suffering, and
bring her/him to everlasting life. Amen.

OFFERING PRAYER
Let us pray.
Blessed are you, O God, maker of all things. Through your goodness you
have blessed us with these gifts: ourselves, our time, and our possessions.

Use us, and what we have gathered, in feeding the world with your love,
through the one who gave himself for us, Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord.
Amen.
DIALOGUE

EUCHARISTIC PRAYER
Holy, mighty, and merciful Lord, heaven and earth are full of your glory. In
great love you sent to us Jesus, your Son, who reached out to heal the sick
and suffering, who preached good news to the poor, and who, on the cross,
opened his arms to all.
In the night in which he was betrayed, our Lord Jesus took bread, and gave
thanks; broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying: Take and eat; this is my
body, given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me.
Again, after supper, he took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it for all to
drink, saying: This cup is the new covenant in my blood, shed for you and
for all people for the forgiveness of sin. Do this for the remembrance of me.

PREFACE

Remembering, therefore, his death, resurrection, and ascension, we await

his coming in glory. Pour out upon us the Spirit of your love, O Lord, and
unite the wills of all who share this heavenly food, the body and blood of
Jesus Christ, our Lord; to whom, with you and the Holy Spirit, be all honor
and glory, now and forever.
Amen.

HOLY, HOLY, HOLY

LORD'S PRAYER
Risen Lord, remember us in your kingdom, and teach us to pray:
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom
come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our
daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who
trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us
from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory,
forever and ever. Amen.
INVITATION TO COMMUNION
Behold the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world. Happy are
all who are called to this table.
Lord, I am not worthy to receive you, but only say the word and your
servant shall be healed.
Taste and see that the Lord is good.

All baptized people are welcome to the table to receive Christs body and
blood. If you have not been baptized, you are also welcome to the table as
Gods guest; we are honored by your presence. We recognize the Body of
Christ as the community of the baptized, so if you would like to become
part of the Body of Christ, we encourage you to seek baptism. If you cant
or dont wish to receive today, we encourage you to hold your hands over
your chest for a blessing as you come forward.
COMMUNION
The body of Christ, given for you.
The blood of Christ, shed for you. Amen.
LAMB OF GOD
PRAYER AFTER COMMUNION
Let us pray. We give you thanks, almighty God, that you have refreshed us
through the healing power of this gift of life. In your mercy, strengthen us
through this gift, in faith toward you and in fervent love toward one
another; for the sake of Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen.
BLESSING
Almighty God, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, bless you now and forever.
Amen.

Philipp Melanchthon, renewer of the church, died 1560

Saturday, June 25, 2016
Though he died on April 19, Philipp Melanchthon is commemorated today
because of his connection with the Augsburg Confession. Colleague and
co-reformer with Martin Luther, Melanchthon was a brilliant scholar,
known as "the teacher of Germany."
The Altar flowers are administered by the worship committee. The 2016
