Great Falls native and four-time Montana State

AA wrestling champion Mike Zadick continued
his stellar career as a three-time All-American
(2000-02) at Iowa, winning the 149-pound Big
Ten title in 2002. He earned a spot on the 2010
World Team at 60kg/132 pounds and was the
2009 U.S. Senior Nationals freestyle champion at
that weight. In 2007, he was the U.S. World Team
Trials champion and won a silver medal at the Pan
American Games in Rio de Janerio, Brazil. Zadicks
other international accomplishments include a
silver medal at the 2006 World Championships
in Guangzhou, China, and runner-up finishes
at the 2004 U.S. Olympic Team trials and U.S.
Nationals, and the 2005 World Team Trials
challenge tournament. Zadik spent 10 years on
the University of Iowa staff, helping the Hawkeyes
to three NCAA and Big Ten team titles. Since
2005, Iowa has crowned seven NCAA champions,
10 Big Ten champions, 43 All-Americans and 43
academic all-Big Ten honorees. He signed on
to the Virginia Tech program as assistant coach
last fall. Mike Zadick is a winner, Hokies head
wrestling coach Kevin Dresser said. He was a
winner as an athlete and is a winner as a coach.
He brings knowledge, toughness, and, he brings a
genuine excitement and passion to be at Virginia
Tech. He is double dangerous with his knowledge
in the folk and freestyle arenas.

attending is already statewide and
some wrestlers from Wyoming are

already planning on making the

trip. Coach Casterline has been
receiving text messages from all
over the state.
Baseballs over, fairs over,

the time and materials to get it up and running at

to place a very nice sign reading Scoreboard In

the face of the scoreboard. The effect of this
tournament has been far reaching already in just six
short years. Endowments have been established
for $10,000 with the GHS Trust Fund and $1,000
with the Scotty Booster Club. Future plans include
NEW playground equipment at the Sullivan Softball

Scotty Wrestling Camp

continued from front

adding, Every wrestler from Glasgow should be

there.
Along with having kids coming in from out of
town, other high school coaches are coming in with
their kids, he said, so there will be no shortage of
instruction.
Something different for this year is a Youth
Camp aimed at kids ages kindergarten-3rd grade.
This camp will be held on Monday and Tuesday,
August 8th & 9th, from 9:00-10:30 each morning.
Cost is $40 and includes a free camp t-shirt. It will
be focused on basic instruction.
It will be interesting to see how the kids
respond, Coach Casterline says of a bit different
atmosphere than theyre used to.
The older kids, grades 4 through seniors, will
have the mats (three, possibly four mats will line
the Civic Center wall-to-wall!) from 10:30-12:30
and again from 2:00-4:30 Sunday, Monday and
Tuesday, August 7th, 8th & 9th. Cost is $100 per
wrestler which includes a free camp t-shirt.
The big boys camp will focus on technique
followed by all-out wrestling. And with the interest
shown in attending the Scotty camp pouring in
from all directions, everyone there will have the
opportunity to face competition and perhaps some
different styles theyve never experienced before.
These former Iowa guys now at Virginia Tech
have a very aggressive style, Coach Casterline says
of Zadick and St. John. Its going to be an intense
camp. Not intensive, but intense.
Since having Derek St. John here last year,
Coach Casterline has stayed in contact with him,
saying he is excited to make the return to Glasgow
as he was so impressed at the tremendous turn-out
for a wrestling camp in a town the size of Glasgow.
Of course, feasting on Eugenes Pizza on a
pontoon out in the middle of Fort Peck Reservoir
on a most perfect August evening probably didnt
hurt in luring St. John back. And it was St. John
who talked the Montana legend, Mike Zadick, into
coming with him.
While its not cheap to put this high-caliber
wrestling camp together, it should pay big dividends
as far as the future of Scotty wrestling is concerned.
Were going to pipeline the Virginia Tech
program here, said Coach Casterline.

Derek St. John serves as the volunteer Director of

Wrestling Operations for the Hokies. He comes to
Virginia Tech after one season as an assistant coach at
North Dakota State. The 2013 NCAA champion at 157
pounds, he became the 18th four-time All-American in
Iowa history in 2014. He placed fourth at the NCAA
Championships as a freshman, second as a sophomore,
first as a junior and fifth as a senior, claiming his spot
as one of the most decorated Hawkeye wrestlers
in history. The Parnell, Iowa, native concluded his
collegiate career with a record of 106-17. St. John was
the 2012 Big Ten champion and a two-time Big Ten
runner-up at 157 pounds. He posted a record of 31-2
in his national championship campaign of 2012-13,
earning Iowas Mike Howard Most Valuable Wrestler
Award. He was a redshirt on the Iowa team that won
the NCAA team title in 2010. He graduated from Iowa
in May 2014 with a degree in business studies.
