JAL

MAHAL

INTRODUCTION
Jal Mahal which literally means the THE WATER PALACE
is a palace located in the middle of the Man Sagar Lake
in Jaipur city, the capital city of Rajasthan. The palace
and the lake around it were modernized and enlarged in
the 18th century by Maharaja Jai Singh II of Amber. Jal
Mahal is considered as one of the most beautiful
architectural palace that was built with the Mughal and
Rajput craftsmanship. The palace provides a charming
view of the Man Sagar Lake and the Nahargarh hills that
border it.

HISTORY

In the past, at the location of the JAL MAHAL

lake, there was a natural depression where
water used to accumulate. During 1596 AD,
when there was a severe famine in this region
there was consequent acute shortage of water.
Then the ruler of Amer was, therefore,
motivated to build a dam to store water to
overcome the severe hardships caused by the
famine to the people inhabiting the region. A
dam was constructed, initially using earth and
quartzite, across the eastern valley between
Amer hills and Amagarh hills. The dam was later
converted into a stone masonry structure in the
17th century. The dam, as existing now is about
300 metres long. It is provided with three sluice
gates for release of water for irrigation of
agricultural land in the down stream. Since
then, the dam, the lake and the palace in its
midst have undergone several rounds of
restoration under various rulers of Rajasthan
but the final restoration in the 18th century is
credited to Jai Singh II of Amer.

Jal Mahal has a fairly fascinating and enigmatic history to it.

Seemingly, afloat on Man Sagar Lake, it was Udaipurs
Lake Palace that was the inspiration behind
Jal Mahals creation sometime in the 18th
century by Maharaja Sawai Pratap Singh.
Its main use was as a venue for royal duck/
migratory bird-shooting spree or at least
thats what the popular legends will have
you believe. Ironically, while the palace
has been abandoned, today its home to
a large number of migratory and native
birds . Jal Mahal has long evoked the
curiosity of historians. Despite having
been studied by eminent historians the
likes of Giles Tillotson and Vibhuti
Sachdev, very little has been able to
be uncovered about Jal Mahal.

GEOGRAPHY

The lake, situated to the north of Jaipur city lies

betweenAmer and Jaipur. It has a water spread area of 300
acres and is enclosed by the Aravalli hills on the north,
west and eastern sides, while the southern side consists of
plains that are intensely inhabited. There is theNargarh
Fort in the hills that provides a commanding view of the
Man Sagar Lake and the Jal Mahal palace. In addition to a
beautiful view of the city of Jaipur. The lake was created by
constructing a dam across the Darbhawati River, between
Khilagarh hills and the hilly areas of Nahargarh, in the 16th
century. A rain fall average of 657.4 millimeter occurs per
year.

CIVICS

In 2004, the Rajasthan

Tourism Development
Corporation took matters
in its hands and decided
to try and restore the
monument to its original
glory. They signed an
agreement with Jal Mahal
Resorts, granting it a 99year lease to develop
100 acres along the Man
Sagar Lake (in the middle
of which Jal Mahal
stands) and the palace.
The 99-year lease was
given out to a business
tycoon, Navratan Kothari.
For the past 9 years, he
has worked on the
cleaning of the lake and
restoration of the Palace.
Now there are many
inhabitants of the area
and it has created a

of
rules by state government in lease allotment,
but when bids were invited the accused
participated
in the tendering. So, it cannot be said that
he,
before the start of tendering, had induced
government for leasing the property.
It said its nowhere established the accused
tried to transfer or sell the allotted property.
Contrarily, he spent Rs100 crore on
development.

ECONOMICS

WHAT IS
ECONOMY?

Economy can be defined in many ways, but at a high

level, it refers to the general state of the wealth of a

society based on production and consumption of
goods/services. An economy is impacted by the
strength/weakness of its currency, it's import vs. export
balance, the interest rates used to lend money,
productivity rates, and other factors.
Tourism impacts an economy by bringing an influx of
cash to the region. Tourists stay at hotels, eat at
restaurants, visit sights, rent cars, etc. All of this results
in jobs for the locals, and more cash income to the
businesses. The more tourists that come, the more $$
and jobs that follows them. Usually this benefits an
economy.

Jal Mahal is a great tourist attraction.

SCIENCE

Status of water quality

In recent years, with the urbanisation of Jaipur city and areas
surrounding the jal mahal lake, the ecological system of the
lake and its vicinity deteriorated drastically. It became
heavily silted thereby reducing the surface area of the lake.
BUT, after the lease case he wanted to give Jal Mahal an eye
popping makeover. And partially he is also successful (as you
can see in theBEFORE
picture below).
AFTER

EUTROPHICATION
The silt deposited was
contaminated witheffluents
from the city's drainage system
causing intense
EUTROPHICATION. The ground
water surrounding the lake was
also found to be highly
contaminated and created
serious health hazards. The
rainwater combined with
sewage water flow from the city
resulted in the lake water giving
off a foul smell. Water samples
collected from the lake were
tested and found to clearly show
that the water quality was NOT

FLORA AND FAUNA IN THE JAL MAHAL

REGION
The dominant floral specie
found in the area is Dahuk
which has lean foliage. The
reserve forest area of the lake
catchment has several wild
life species such asDeer,
jungle cat,striped
hyena,Indian fox,Indian wild
boar.
The lake used to be a bird
watcher's paradise in the past
and was a favorite ground for
theRajputkings of Jaipur for
royal duck shooting parties
during picnics. The lake was
natural habitat for more than 150
species of local and migratory
birds that included
LargeFlamingo

In order to attract attention to the lake's condition,

a private initiative of holding an annual birding fair
was started in 1989. It is reported that thecommon
moorhen, a resident species has started breeding
in large numbers at the lake. The lake was also
home for a large species of the aquatic ecosystem
such as fish, insects, microorganisms and aquatic
vegetation.
