Q. What about cases of discrimination and violence against Muslims

during the decade?

A. Such incidents multiplied in the 80's. Mosques were the target of

vandalism. Muslim leaders were attacked verbally and physically.
People like Ismail Farooqi and Yusuf Bilal were killed. In a
pluralistic society where several interest groups work to outdo each
other, these kinds of brutal acts are not uncommon. What was sad
was that the Muslim community did not pursue these cases vigor
ously. Farooqi is almost forgotten. So is Bilal.

A. Our main deficiency in America is the need for materials. Other

The story is told of a Swedish expert who went to Japan to study

workers' participation in management. In one factory, in the middle of
an interview, he was gravely embarrassed when the Japanese worker
burst into tears. Finding no response from the worker, the Swede
sought an answer from his supervisor. "Tell me everything that you said
to the worker," confidently after listening to his story, "the worker was
upset when you told him that his company has not been procuring
export orders like before." The worker, the Swede was told was deeply
concerned that the nation would suffer if the exports went down, a fact
which could be attributed, in his own estimation, to a lowering of
quality.

Dear Ghulam:

Thank you so much for your kind words about

my recent speech to the United Nations General

I share your belief that, in order to face the

I look forward to working with you and others

Rome's Islamic centre promotes Islamic activities

The Islamic Centre based in the Italian capital, Rome, after gaining recognition by
the .Government has redoubled its efforts to propagate Islamic Faith and culture
throughout the country. Besides providing necessary facilities, the Centre periodically
holds seminars and lectures on various aspects ofthe Islamic culture and civilization.
The Centre has also established special institutes for studies on the Holy Qur'an and
the tradition of the Prophet (peace be on him). One of the outstanding achievements
of the Centre is production of a television series in the Italian language on the
condition of the Muslim immigrants in Italy focussing on the problems faced by the
immigrants in, carrying out their religious and cultural obligations in the country. The
Centre has also published 5000 copies of a book on Islamic worship and other
subjects with Italian translation for the benefit of non-Arabs. The production of.the
book was financed by a prominent Italian Baron Bourna Nova who had embraced
Islam a few years ago. The Islamic Centre in Rome has established an institution
for teaching Arabic, English and Italian languages for the Muslims living in the
various parts of the country and the centre also offers this facility to non-Muslims
interested in acquiring the knowledge of Islamic Faith, culture and its civilization.

Q. What is your opinion of the death penalty imposed on the British author
Salman Rushdie.

A. Some people, in emotion, pass these resolutions. I think that today

we must promote human rights. The death penalty should be only for
criminals who commit the crime of killing people. But otherwise,
human rights should be given to everybody.

Yet ifMuslims today see themselves as victimized by the West, for most oftheir
history it was Christendom that felt under siege, Within a century of the
Prophet's death in 632, the Moors had conquered Spain and were knocking on
the doors ofFrance. Charles Martel, father ofthe FrankishEmperor Charlemagne,
stopped them at the Battle ofTours. By 1453, however, the Ottoman Turks had
captured Constantinople and were marching through the Balkans toward the
back door of Europe. The last, failed siege of Vienna in 1683 halted that

In death, as in his short life, Barrie Lockwood has been set apart from other
children. His family were denied permission to bury the seven-year-old
victim of cerebral palsy alongside other youngsters because his coffin was
six inches too long. Officials of Harrogate council in North Yorkshire
refused to bend the rules, which state that 4ft is the maximum for burial
in the children's section of Ripon cemetery. Instead he was laid to rest 200
yards away among adult graves up to 100 years old, his teddy bear-shaped
headstone surrounded by more formal monuments. At the time, in January,
Barrie's mother Valeri, of Aismunder by Close, Ripon, was too distraught
to argue following his death from a chest infection. But now she is
campaigning on behalf of other bereaved parents for a change in the
regulations. 'In times of great distress it can be a consolation to know your
child rests with others of his generation, but my son has been denied even
that,' she said. 'Because of his condition, his life didn't involve much contact
with other children, so surely it wasn't asking too much to be buried next
to those whose lives were also cut short? 'The children's cemetery is so
pretty, as much more appropriate for a boy of seven than placing him among
adults' graves dating back generations. (John Woodcock)
