The Multimedia Super Corridor (MSC) is one of initiative that will bring
Malaysia to the new global information and communication technology (ICT) industry.
The infrastructure emphasis on eco-friendly yet sophisticated urban structures for
business, homes, education and recreation. Furthermore, MSC is supported by secure
cyberlaws, strategic policies and a range of financial and non-financial incentives for
investors. Information technology and IT are widely used in business and the field of
computing. People use the terms generically when referring to various kinds of computer
related work, which sometimes confuses their meaning.
A protocol concept in
Sector 1: Telecommunication
The changing landscape of the Malaysian telecom market has over time perceived
the restructuring of all the main companies. Moving forward of information age has
made the telecommunication industry expanded into varied functionality in supporting
the growth of technological innovation for better services. Demands from the society
made telecommunication industry noticeable due to its contribution as a tool of
technological support for the national development in line with the national aspirations.
Government has been the major ally of the rationalization of what had been seen as an
overcrowded operator market at times, this concern referring specifically to the Internet.
1
The number of internet subscribers in Malaysia is expected to reach the 25 million mark
in the next three years according to The Economic Report 2013/2014 that was released
last year. There is no doubt that developments of telecommunication industry and its
technological infrastructure has contributed to the introduction of various technologies
best described as the backbone for the better services of broadcasting and communication
services. Through many years, telecommunication industry has aggressively developed
from telephone and telegraphic services to mobile telecommunication by using fiber optic
cable, microwave and satellite system that link the communities in the rural and urban
area. This inspiring growth trend has sustained, and most of the internet subscribers were
eyeing for high speed broadband infrastructure in the near future. Telecommunication
industry faces a number of challenges to maintain their product and services. A major
challenge is to ensure the right infrastructure is applied for optimum functionality. This
reflects to the different target market such as type of device for voice communication and
internet access. Service provider need to analyze their existing infrastructure and make
changes where necessary to expand their capabilities and meet rising data usage
demands.
Furthermore, quality of service will be the number one concern on customer as user.
Hence, customer service should play an important role to ensure customers need and
problem to be taken care and provide solution that solves issues experienced. Less
satisfaction will increase customer complaint and drop the number of subscriber.
Therefore, it is important to provide high level of service when customers call for
assistance. In addition, competition will be encouraged to guarantee the quality services
but the degree of competition will always be analyzed in order to avoid any defect in the
telecommunication sector. For future direction, user will need stable data network that
enough to fulfill the demands of modern communication. This is because, internet is a
main information counter to people in this modern era. Users like everything in their
fingertips. Therefore, the stability of connection must in line with the nowadays lifestyle
of living. The stability of data means no matter where there go, what they do, users still
get connected through internet. In this case, data network should not only get connected
through laptop but also through mobile or other gadget. Therefore, in most cases, surfing
internet through laptop will always rank second to mobile or other gadget in
2
communication purposes. Hence, wireless network must be good too. In future, wireless
hotspot should not be limited as what we have now. Wireless hotspots in future should be
get connected from everywhere for example at the bus station, on the street and etc.
Wireless range not supposed to be limited in certain area but it should be wider and most
important thing, loading of data must be fast. As what we have now, high speed
broadband or HSBB is something that users wants as it is a complete package such as it
provide fast data network to surf internet also good condition on stability of connection.
For example, Telekom Malaysia Berhad has been announced their new broadband service
called UniFi. It is a broadband service that uses fibre optics to deliver high speed
internet, phone and IPTV services to customers home.
connected while away from home through streamyx hotspot that link with their unifi
service at home by using the same password.
Sector 2: Banking
Information technology offers tremendous potential and liberated different chance
to the banking sector. It gives practical, fast, low cost and efficiency service to the
clients.
Nevertheless, easy access and convenience should not be at the expense and mercy of the
security of information.
information and that it is not being manipulated or compromised by the fraudsters. The
provider of internet banking services must be more responsive on security requirements.
Currently, there are no formal processes being put in place to determine the level of
security provided by these service providers and to what minimum standards they should
be. For a better security, there few processes should be considered by provider. While
there is no doubt that internet banking transaction should have layered protection against
threats, the providers should approach security considerations as part of their service for
future. This is to ensure clients will put a trust on the online banking service since it is
needed by the society in this era. This further technology of internet banking can be
classified as substitute for the existing branching structure. The growth of technology
shows major differences in the development of internet banks as compared to traditional
banks in term of profitability, efficiency or credit quality. Therefore, modern banking
leading clients satisfaction and has move from brick banking to concept of click
banking. One of new online banking technology, for example that has been introduced
by CIMB Bank Berhad, Kwik service or best can be describe as online debit card will
give more pleasant to clients needs. This new technology has been announced by CIMB
where it is the first ever completely online banking account that offers clients more
freedom to make quick transaction to other Kwik account holders by using only email
address or a mobile number. Service is extended to pay bills, make online purchases and
also reload your prepaid mobile. Furthermore, this service comes with physical Kwik
card that allows clients to shop and withdraw money while there are out and about. This
kind of technology is engaging clients where they spend their time with a specific focus
on their intimacy. The intention is to create relationship based on personal interest,
leverage influences and facilitate co-creation.
Sector 3: SME
Small and Medium Sized Enterprises (SME) play an important role in economic
development of a country. Several theories elaborate on connection between information
technology, economic development and social change.
communication technology (ICT). SMEs have yet to discover the importance of ICT in
the current environment, which plays a very important role in the growth of their
business. The possibility to select an appropriate technology will be affected especially if
the members of management are not clear with the benefit and power of the ICT. Hence,
business process will become more difficult. Furthermore, employee will be affected too
if the company decided to adopt ICT in running its daily operation. In due to train the
employees to master on the new system, they need to attend trainings. This will cost to
the companies and pose a challenge to the management, if the employee could not master
what has been thought to them. Therefore, employee will feel demotivated and produce
low productivity. To be better in future, SMEs must able to accept changes, challenge
conventional thinking, and employ new methodologies and processes to meet with the
increasing challenges worldwide. These are the central essentials to make sure the
5
smooth of growth, competitiveness and sustainability of doing business in this new era.
Knowledgeable of IT and enriched skills would help in better growth of SMEs.
Furthermore, SMEs must buckle up their strategies, planning and marketing with the
necessary skills and technical expertise, and explore new technology to seek out new
business opportunities abroad. The success of the planning and marketing can be done by
the ability to analyze and predict the target market. It is very important to provide insight
into customer needs and thus provide direction for product and service development.
Moving forward, SMEs have to adopt new process and methods to succeed higher
productivity, efficiency and cost effectiveness.
Sector 4: Education
Technology is an undeniable compelling element in an education. The use of
technology united both the education community and the broader public community in
teaching and learning process. Electronic tools such as computer, mobile phone and other
gadget are utilized as a part in developing countries both to complement established
education practices and develop new way of learning such as online education.
Technology offers dominant learning tools that required people to understand and adapt
new skills on how technology will lead better education in future. The growths of
technology in education can be seen in the transformation of engaging content into the
classroom. In this new era, online education is more compatible by means of students
will get opportunity to become much more engaged in constructing their own knowledge
and cognitive studies show that ability is key to learning success. Nevertheless, in line
with online education, technology is enabling multi-modal teaching as guidance for
student to ensure their study is on track. Through online learning, both student and tutor
are able to use application or software to enhance their virtual class such as presentation,
videos and many more. Moreover, wide-ranging of discussion can be created due to
mobile accessibility. In due to achieve new style of learning, teachers have to accept the
changes of teaching style and method. Work in your comfort zone will be the key of
challenges to accept change. Teachers will have a problem to integrate new technologies
to be use into their classrooms yet who are unprepared or unable to understand new
technologies. For example, teachers unfamiliar with the useful of computer and the
6
software that can help to enhance the quality and effectiveness of teaching. Meanwhile,
on the other point of view in challenges use of IT in education is lack of human contact.
Sometimes people do need human touch to get better understanding.
Through
technology, everything seems to work online and virtual. Chances to meet and get one to
one session with teacher is lesser with virtual class. In this case, both student and teacher
have to know how to use technology and IT tools to get connected. Moreover, the
standard quality of materials should be monitor as information from the World Wide Web
is uncontrollable. Students might get rare information or non-related materials if they not
guided by teachers and parents. The focus of the future direction in education must
remain on children, learners and teachers, and how to plan good strategies to attach the
power of technologies in this industry. There is some argument on education growth,
new school are needed for new generation which is more focus on Gen Y, that the social
power of technology will force us to redefine education. Therefore, education must come
to tie with the technology revolution rapidly, design and use new learning experiences,
and teach more process skills than before. This future direction should be tag along with
creativity and successful of innovation to ensure the potential offered by technologies is
implemented. Not to forget, proper plan on strategies to ensure children and student are
skillful in problem solving and critical thinking, communication, technical reading and
writing, information literacy, how to use IT tools, new mindset skills and also new
personal skills.
New IT development is important to all sectors for the growth of business because
everything related to business will in touch with IT based. The implementation of IT will
enhance in business marketing, operations, e-commerce, logistic, human resource,
finance, accounting also relationship between customers and business partners. Many
innovative flagship application have been developed in the MSC top accelerate its
growth. They are focused on the development of electronic government, education,
online business and multipurpose card. The four applications are:
1. Electronic Government which will lead the country into the information age as
well as how it delivers service to users.
growth.
