Bible Story: Detour (Paul in Antioch with Barnabas) Acts 11:25-30; 13:1-3
Bottom Line: The story of Jesus changes how I help others.

Hebrews 11:1, NIrV
Life App: Faithbelieving what Jesus did can change me.
Basic Truth: I should treat others the way I want to be treated.

Welcome Time
Welcome kids and spend time engaging in conversation and catching up. Get ready to experience
todays story.
Before kids arrive, pray for each regular attendee by name. Pray for those who might visit your group
for the first time. All kids (and probably most adults!) struggle with putting others ahead of themselves.
Pray that your kids would start to learn what it means to help others as a response to what Christ has
done for them. Pray they would take todays lessons and apply what they learn, and that their hearts
would start to follow their actions.
What You Need: Offering container, die (or dice)
What You Do:
Invite kids to put their offerings in the offering container as they arrive.
Review the story of Jesus with the kids.
Let each kid roll a die one time.
For whatever number they roll, each kid has to share with the group that amount of true things
they know about Jesus.
It can be a word to describe Him, a story they heard, a miracle He performed, a Bible verse
about Him, or any fact they know about His life.
The last couple kids to share might need to repeat some things that have already been shared.
This is fine, but encourage kids to avoid repeating if they can.

Activity #1
Create a safe place to connect and learn how the Bible story applies to real life experiences, through
interactive activities and discussion questions.
Schools in Session (application activity / review the Bible)
What You Need: Bibles, paper, pencils
What You Do:
Discuss the Bible story Acts 11:25-30; 13:1-3: Potential review questions are:
o What was happening in Antioch? (People were sharing the story of Jesus, the number of
people deciding to follow Jesus was increasing, the story of Jesus was being spread to
Jews and Gentiles)
o When Barnabas arrived in Antioch he discovered people from all kinds of backgrounds
were following Jesus, but what were they missing? What was keeping them from
learning even more about Jesus? (A teacher)
o So how did Barnabas help them? (He went to get Saul to help teach them)
o What did the church in Antioch do for the church in Jerusalem? (Helped them, gave
everything they could)
Ask kids to pair up and pretend they are Barnabas and Saul.
Each team gets a verse to look up and decide how they would teach the meaning of the verse
to a group of people. Verses are: Mark 9:35, Matthew 7:12, John 15:13, and Luke 10:27. Kids
can write the verse reference on a piece of paper to help them remember it.
Each team acts as Barnabas and Saul, and they teach the group what Jesus says in the verse
by giving an example of what the verse means.
What You Say:
What do all these verses have in common? (They teach us how to treat others, they teach us we
arent the most important and God is the most important and then our neighbor) Thats right! Jesus had
a lot to say about how you treat other people. Clearly loving God and loving your neighbor is important
to Jesus.
In the Bible story today, Barnabas and Saul shared the story of Jesus with the church in Antioch. While
they were teaching, a prophet predicted a famine would hit Jerusalem. When the believers heard about
the famine, what did they do? (They sent gifts to help the believers in Jerusalem) The believers in
Antioch helped people they had never met; the believers in Antioch didnt even know the believers in
Jerusalem, but they helped them anyway. The story of Jesus not only changes how believers, or
Christians, help others; the story of Jesus changes WHY Christians help others. Because I have faith
and I believe Jesus is who He says He is, [Bottom Line] the story of Jesus changes how I help
others. When you have faith in Jesus, you help others because of Jesus love for you.

Activity #2
If you lead mostly older kids, consider asking these discussion questions:
What are some reasons someone who doesnt know Jesus would help other people? (To be
kind, because they like the other people, because they would want someone to help them,
because they have the skills to help, etc.)
What are some reasons a follower of Jesus would help other people? (To show the world Jesus
love, because Jesus helped them so they help others, because Jesus loves all people) Discuss
the similarities and the differences in the motivation for helping others between someone who
knows the story of Jesus and someone who doesnt.
What gifts do you have that could be used to help others? Not just what you physically have, but
things that youre good at. (After kids answer this question, give them each a gift bow to take
with them to remind them to be aware of their gifts and use them whenever possible.)
4/5/6 Challenge
What You Say:
(Use the following to start a discussion.) This week with people from your house, maybe while youre
eating dinner or driving somewhere in the car, think of opportunities to put other people first. How many
can you come up with? For an additional challenge, think of places when its the hardest for you
personally to be patient enough that others can go first. Maybe for your mom its letting others out in the
carpool line. Or maybe for your brother, its letting someone else choose the video game. Or for your
sister, it might be letting someone else pick the TV show being watched. Helping others sometimes
costs us something, but its worth it!

Prayer
Opposites

Time

What You Need: Bibles

What You Do:
Close in prayer, thanking Jesus for what He did for you and asking for His guidance to use
everyone in your groups gifts to share the story of Jesus and Jesus love to others.
What You Say:
(Read Acts 11:27-30.) The Christians in Antioch decided to provide help for the believers in Jerusalem.
They sent their gifts with Saul and Barnabas. Gifts or talents come in all shapes and sizes and Jesus
can use them all to help others. The believers in Antioch didnt hide their gifts; they knew Jesus wanted
them to use their gifts to help others. [Make It Personal] (Share about a gift or talent you use to
show Jesus love to others. Encourage the kids to share gifts or talents they have.) [Bottom
Line] The story of Jesus changes how I help others and gives me reasons to use the gifts He has
given me.
Tell parents today the kids learned [Bottom Line] the story of Jesus changes how we help others.
Encourage kids to share with parents what Jesus says about how we should treat others.
