OBJECTIVES:
Students will understand the basic concepts of Control Systems
Will be able to make mathematical models and the block diagrams of physical dynamic systems.
Will be able to understand the system response and analyze it.
Will be engaged in self-directed learning through their course project.
DETAILS OF SYLLABUS
1.

Basic Concepts: Control system, Open-loop control system, closed-loop control system, Systems,

Dynamic systems, System environments and boundary, Inputs, Outputs, State variables, Systems
approach, examples.
2.

Mathematical Modeling of Physical Systems: Block diagrams, mathematical modeling, linear

models, nonlinear models, and linearization, Examples.


3.

Mechanical Systems: Translational, Rotational, Electrical and Electromechanical Systems, Liquid

and thermal systems, Examples.


4.

2 hrs

Laplace transforms, Transfer functions and System response: Laplace transforms, block

diagrams, signal flow graphs, transfer functions, first order system, step, ramp and impulse signals,
second order system, characterization of response, time constant, gain, overshoot, rise time, settling time,
steady stat error, system poles and zeroes, Examples.
5.

Stability of Control Systems: Concept of stability, Routh-Hurwitz stability criterion, Root locus

and its use in control system design, Examples.
