Analyzing Student Work Sample with Teacher Commentary

Student Work Sample

Standard Assessed:
S3E1. Students will investigate the physical attributes of rocks and soils.
a. Explain the difference between a rock and a mineral.
b. Recognize the physical attributes of rocks and minerals using observation (shape,
color, texture), measurement, and simple tests (hardness).
c. Use observation to compare the similarities and differences
Rubric:
Assessment was Proficient (3). Assessment clearly identifies the standards and elements that are
addressed by the student work sample. The student work clearly delineated and the context for the
work is explained. It included most elements of the S3E1 a &b Earth Science Standards for third
grade. Measurement and simple tests of the rocks was not included in this assessment.
Additional Improvements:
Samples W-Z should be in color
Actual samples for students to touch, weigh, etc.
Do not print front and back.
Teacher Commentary
Part A: Claim was made with little to no reasoning. How are the samples different?
Be specific when explaining the different physical attributes. Using texture, shape
and even measurement to defend your answer and claims will make your answer
stronger.
Part B: Two of the physical attributes were recognized, but failed to identify the
shape of the two rocks/minerals. Make sure you include the shape to strengthen
your claim.

Part C: Make sure all physical attributes are evident to support your answer. Next
time make sure to include texture and shape to your claims.

Part D: Great explanation of the color differences between rocks and minerals and
why they are different. Next time discuss the other physical attributes to defend
your claim.
