US tells Western Union to hold Muslim cash

Renovated Jamia
Masjid reopened
After nearly a year of restoration work,
the newly renovated old Jamia
masjid unlocked its doors to
worshippers. A new exquisite interior
greeted the congregation last Friday
after the masjid was reopened.
It was the first time in the masjids 80
year-old history that a comprehensive
renovation had taken place.
The masjid was closed to
worshippers in August last year but
owing to the bad state of the masjid,
more time was needed to complete
the renovation work. Additionally,
some of the materials had to be
sourced from outside the country
further extending the refurbishments.
Among the new additions in place
are an elaborate tile work, a new floor
covering replacing the worn out carpet
which had been in place for decades
as well as an artistique repainting
work at the mihrab. The extension of
the masjid was also given a new
facelift in the renovation work.
The chairman of Jamia masjid
Muhammad
Osman
Warfa
commended the worshippers for
their patience during the yearlong
renovation work. He announced that
the Committee was considering
expanding more ablution facilities to
ease congestion. Furthermore, he
said, avenues were being explored
to expand the capacity ofthe facilities
to accommodate more worshippers.
Despite its more than 10,000
capacity, the masjid can barely handle
the ever increasing worshippers who
on Fridays and during Ramadhan are
forced to conduct prayers outside the
masjid.
The old masjid constructed in 1925
is one of the countrys tourist
attraction sites and has been
included by the government among
the list of national heritage sites.

Western Union is proving not to be the fastest money transfer services after all-at least
where Muslims are concerned. The money transfer service is now delaying and in some
cases entirely blocking cash deliveries to recipients who have Muslim names.
The new policy which has frustrated thousands of people in the Middle East and several
African countries is part of the war on terror and as has been the norm, Muslims are the
worst affected.
The head of marketing at Western Union Benson Wanyoike confirmed that the policy is
firmly in place in the country. He told The Friday Bulletin that the company was following a
directive by the United States to prevent funding to what the US claims terrorist funding. It is
not a matter of the company policy but an issue of compliance, he said.
A company offical Simon Njoroge said that the flagged transactions are matched with names
on a US watch list of terrorist suspects and if it proves to be positive the funds are blocked.
A frustrated customer complained to The Friday Bulletin that he was asked to produce
documented evidence about his name, date and place of birth before the funds were wired
to the recipient.
In most cases the funds are delayed for some hours while in extreme cases they are
blocked entirely. The most vulnerable names include Muhammad, Ahmed and Ibrahim.
The Middle East has been particularly hit hard. In one example, an Indian driver said Western
Union prevented him from sending US$120 to a friend at home this month because the
recipients name was Muhammad.
Western Union told me that if I send money to Sahir Muhammad, the money will be blocked
because of his name, said 36-year-old Abdul Rahman Maruthayil, who later sent the money
through UAE Exchange, a Dubai-based money transfer service.
In a similar case, Pakistani Qadir Khan said Western Union blocked his attempt this month
to wire money to his brother, Muhammad, for a cataract operation. Every Muhammad is a
terrorist now? Khan asked.
Responding to complaints, US Treasury spokeswoman Molly Millerwise said frustrations
endured by those with certain names were necessary. We have an obligation to do all we
can to keep money out of the hands of terrorists, she said.
The US based company has bowed to pressure from the American Treasury Department to
delay or blocks transfers between customers whose names even partially match names of

German couple assaults Imam over adhan

In a yet bizarre incident showing lack of respect to freedom of worship, a German couple
assaulted an Imam in Kikambala, Kilifi district and later orchestrated his arrest and detention.
His crime? Refusing to give in to the foreigners demand to stop the prayer call (Adhan) over
the public address system.
The foreigners had since two years ago when they moved into the area have complained
that the adhan at the nearby masjid, where Sheikh Salim Abdallah Mwadudu is the Imam,
disturbs their peace and demanded that it stops.
The couple Kurt and Lily Burk are said to have attacked the Imam at the masjid and with the
help of private security guards arrested the Sheikh Salim and had him detained at Kijipwa
police station.
The Saturday incident ignited angry reactions from residents who retaliated by blocking the
road leading to the beachfront home of the couple. Tunasikia vibaya kwamba Imam aja
kupigwa hapa msikitini, (We are upset that they assaulted the imam at the masjid) said a
resident. They said that the couple had no business in the area if they were not willing
respect to Islamic ideals.
The residents blamed the police for the Imams predicament saying that though both recorded
statements with the police, it was only Sheikh Salim who was detained while the assailant
went scot-free.
A resident, Abdulrazak Khalifa said the masjid has been in place for the last 200 years. He
said before the couple moved to the area, they were staying in relative peace and harmony
with members of other different faiths.
The Kikambala incident rekindles memories of individuals who last year went to court and
demanded that the demolition of three mosques in the plush Nyali suburb of Mombasa
when they claimed that the prayer houses will disturb their peace.

Need to respect the Islamic prayer call

The assault of an Imam in Kikambala is yet another spectacle
of a foreigner trampling on the citizens rights of freedom of
worship.
The action of the German couple to attack an Imam in the
compound of the masjid as a result of his displeasure of hearing
the prayer call (adhan ) is a gross violation of the constitutional
provision enshrining the concept of the freedom of worship.
It is also an act of injustice on the part of the police to
detain the Imam when it was clear that he was the victim
of the attack.
Last year, an unprecedented event took place in
Mombasa where a group of individuals among them
another German national, went to court demanding that
construction of the masaajid cease. Their main concern was
also the adhan which they like the couple claimed will disturb
their peace.
Thankfully, construction went ahead on some of the masaajid.
Complaints against the adhan abound but unfortunately these
are nothing but a smokescreen for Islamophobia-hatred and
disdain for Islam.
The Islamic call of prayer takes less than a minute in each of
the five daily prayers which are made at different times of the

day. Yet it is these five minutes spread in the 24-hour period that
have generated resentment by the likes of Kurt Burk.
It is a common phenomenon in urban and rural areas to hear
deafening chants accompanied by music resonating from places
of worship. These events reach their climax on weekends and
sometimes stretch through the night but have rarely attracted any
complaint.
Yet the sounds of the adhan are treated with annoyance
and attempts to gag the Islamic prayer call continue to
flourish. Such attempts will only contribute to straining
harmonious relations between Muslims and other
religious faiths which have remained strong over the
years.
The government has a duty to ensure that this constitutionally
enshrined freedom is upheld. More so, the Kikambala issue
should be revisited and the State should ensure that justice
prevails.
We are in the midst of circus of foreigners who have trampled on
the countrys justice system and it should not let another foreigner
let circumvent the rule of the law through questionable
circumstances.

launch postponed

New seaport for Lamu

Lamu is planned to host the countrys second seaport, Transport
minister Chirau Ali Mwakwere announced recently.
Construction of the port is to commence this month at a cost of
Sh18 billion. A Kuwaiti construction company has expressed
interest in the project and negotiations are underway with the
government.
Mwakwere said the port will relieve cargo activity at the already
congested port of Mombasa and further stimulate economic
activities in the coast, and north-east provinces. More so, the
new port is expected to serve as a gateway for goods destined to
Ethiopia and Southern Sudan.
The potential is great for Lamu and the country as a whole since
Mombasa port, which handles goods destined to Southern
Sudan and Somalia will now delegate the responsibility to the
Lamu port, the minister said.
A railway network to facilitate cargo transport from the port to
Southern Sudan and Ethiopia is also being mooted as part of
the multi-million investment project.
Transport Permanent Secretary Dr Gerishon Ikiara was in Lamu
recently with officials from Kenya Ports Authority, Kenya Railways
and representatives from the Kuwaiti company to assess the
viability of the project.
At the same time, expectations are high that ongoing exploration
for oil in the island town will prove to be a success.
On offshore exploration for oil is expected to begin in October
this year. The National Oil Corporation of Kenya Ltd (NOCK) said
that an Australian oil exploration firm, Woodside Energy is to
undertake the venture.
Local leaders have expressed interest in the new developments
but have stressed that they too should be involved in the projects.
We would like to see the potential translated into tangible
economic benefits for the local community, said Lamu County
Council chairman Omar Famau.

those on a list of suspected terrorist held by the Treasury
Department. The regulations apply to Western Union money
transfers made anywhere.
At the Council on American-Islamic Relations in Washington,
spokesman Corey Saylor said Treasury needs to reform its rules.
The Treasury program interferes with even the most innocent
transactions, Saylor said. Just because Ahmed is a common
name on their list, everyone with that name is suddenly stuck.
Only three people said to be Kenyans are listed on records
available on the Treasury website. These are Abdallah Fazul
who is also listed as a Comorian national and Sheikh Ahmed
Saleh Suweidan, Mustafa Muhammad Fadhil who is also listed
as an Egyptian. (Additional reporting by Agencies)

The launch of an interest free account by Kenya Commercial Bank

has been postponed. The unveiling of the Amana account which
had been slated for July 17 will now be held a week later on July
26.
A senior official at KCB Alice Macharia said a panel of Islamic
scholars mandated by KCB to study the plan has already ironed
out pending issues with the bank.
Members of the panel are expected to make a presentation of the
KCB proposals to the Majlis Ulamaa Kenya and other scholars.
More products are also planned pending the amendment of the
Banking Act and recommendations from Islamic scholars.
This will be the second Islamic banking product to be launched
on the market after the La Riba account was launched by Barclays
Bank early this year. The account was launched last year after
being approved by scholars who included the chairman of Majlis
Ulamaa Kenya Sheikh Khalfan Khamis.
Meanwhile senior officials of Corporate Insurance Company (CIC)
last week met the Majlis Ulamaa-Kenya to give details about an
insurance scheme developed for Muslims intending to make the
pilgrimage to the holy city of Makkah.
The scholarly body last month advised Muslims to refrain from
subscribing to the Corporate Hajj Special after the company failed
to present details about the policy.
Company representatives who met the officials from the Majlis
were technical and underwriting manager James Muthengi and
company officals Julias Nyenzo , and Peter Sifuna.

Call for more Muslim MPs

There is need for more Muslim representation in the Parliament
to take care of the interests of the community.
In his Friday Sermon at Nairobis Jamia masjid last week, Sheikh
Muhammad Osman said more Muslims in the august house
would ensure that the rights of Muslims in the country will be
safeguarded. He said, Muslims being a minority, MPs were in a
better position to thwart legislations with negative consequences
for the community.
The Sheikh called on Muslim parliamentarians to be vigilant in
protecting the rights of Muslims in the country.
He went on to dismiss assertions that Muslims should not involve
themselves in the Legislative Assembly saying that such claims
did not bore well for the welfare of Muslims in the country. There
are not there to legislate against Allahs laws but to protect the
rights of Muslims, he said in his sermon.
Sheikh Muhammad also called for prayers and support to the
people of Palestine for what he said was the campaign of
genocide which was being inflicted by the Israeli-occupiers.

Islam & The Concept of Friendship

Humans have always been social creatures and in need of friends

and companions. Much of our lives is spent in interaction with others.
For us Muslims who are living in a society where we are clearly a
minority, the issue of choosing right companions is essential for
preserving our Deen. Befriending righteous and virtuous Muslims is
an essential means for staying on the Straight Path. Strong individuals,
on the other hand, are the core of a strong community, something that
Muslims should always strive for. We all know that we were created
for a specific purpose and that Allah the Most High has given us life in
order to test us. None of us will deny that we are here for a relatively
short period of time and that we shall meet Allah (subhana wa taala)
one Day.
In an authentic Hadith, the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him)
said: A person is likely to follow the faith of his friend, so look whom
you befriend.(Abu Dawood). The person most noble in character
and dealings with fellow humans gave us a very clear message and
advice in regard to friendship. We should choose the friend that is
satisfied with our Deen and avoid the friend that is displeased with it.
Whoever we see and are pleased with his Deen, we should befriend
him and whoever we are displeased with his Deen and his manners,
we ought to avoid him. There is no good in the companion who does
not wish for us (from good) what he wishes for himself. There is also
no good in the companion who wishes for us what he wishes for
himself, if what he likes for his own soul is leading him towards
destruction and Hellfire.
The bases for the actions of those who follow the evil ways are corrupt;
their actions are built upon misguidance and deviation. Their deeds
are worthless to them as Allah (subhana wa taala) said: And We will
proceed to what they have done of deeds, so We shall render them to
scattered floating dust. [25:23]. Their actions, even if we regard them
as righteous and noble are of no value to them, so how can they be of
benefit to us? Friends are those who feel for their companions, in
both happy and sad moments. If we share our feelings with the
wrong- doers whose actions are worthless and based on corruption,
then we are following the same ways and standards as they are.
Affection which results from that friendship leads to love and closeness
to other than the righteous believers, and this may even lead to avoiding
those who are on the Straight Way.
Mixing with followers of any way other than that of the Guidance also
results in a change in ones behaviour, morals and conduct. If we
agree, follow and are pleased with such friends, then we inherit their
habits, behaviours and even religion. Such a Muslim would find himself
in a situation wherein he is willing to hide his Islam in front of those
who despise it (those that he considers as friends) and to separate
from the believers. When this situation occurs, a point is reached
when there is a very slight difference between the Muslim and his
wrong-doing companion. Such a companionship is the root of
sickness of ones heart and loss of ones Deen.
Instead of making friends with the misguided ones we should befriend
the righteous and treat the rest in a gracious and just manner. Staying
on a sufficient distance is necessary, yet treating everybody in a noble
and kind manner is required.
In another Hadith, Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said:
The example of a good companion and a bad companion is like that
of the seller of musk, and the one who blows the blacksmiths bellows.
So as for the seller of musk then either he will grant you some, or you
buy some from him, or at least you enjoy a pleasant smell from him.
As for the one who blows the blacksmiths bellows then either he will
burn your clothes or you will get an offensive smell from him. (alBukhary and Muslim)
In his commentary of this Hadith, Imam an-Nawawy said that the
Prophet (Upon him be peace) compared a good companion to a
seller of musk and spoke of the virtue of having companions who are
good, who have noble manners, piety, knowledge and good culture.
Such are those who grant us from their virtue. And he (al-Bukhary and
Muslim) forbade us to sit with those who do evil, commit a lot of sins
and other bad deeds, as well as with nnovators, backbiters, and so
forth.
Allah the Exalted says in the Quran: And (remember) the Day when
the wrong-doer will bite his hands and say: Woe to me! Would that I
had taken a path with the Messenger. Woe to me! If only I had not
taken so- and-so as a friend! He has led me astray from this
Reminder (the Quran) after it had come to me. And Satan is ever a

deserter to man in the hour of need. [25:27-29] So take heed before

the inevitable Day comes and we are reckoned for our acts.
Allah, the All-Wise also says: Friends on that Day will be enemies
one to another, except al-Muttaqoon (i.e. those who have Taqwah).
[43:67]
Hafidh Ibn Katheer, commenting on this verse, relates a story on the
authority of Ali Ibn Abi Talib (r.a.a.) and says that any friendship for
other than Allah is turned into enmity, except what was in it for Allah the
Mighty and Majestic: Two who are friends for Allahs sake; one of them
dies and is given good news that he will be granted al-Jannah, so he
remembered his friend and he supplicated for him, saying: O Allah,
my friend used to command me to obey You and to obey Your Prophet
(peace be upon him) and used to command me to do good and to
forbid me from doing evil. And he told me that I will meet You. O Allah,
do not let him go astray after me, until you show him what you have
just shown me, until You are satisfied with him, just like You are
satisfied with me. So he is told: Had you known what is (written) for
you friend, would you have laughed a lot and cried a little. Then his
friend dies and their souls are gathered, and both are asked to express
their opinions about each other. So each one of them says to his
friend: you were the best brother, the best companion and the best
friend. And when one of the two disbelieving friends dies, and he is
given tidings of Hellfire, he remembered his friend and he said: O
Allah, my friend used to order me to disobey You and disobey Your
Prophet, and commanded me to do evil, and forbade me from doing
good, and told me that I would not meet You. O Allah, do not guide him
after me, until you show him what you have just shown me and until
you are dissatisfied with him just like You are dissatisfied with me.
Then the other disbelieving friend dies, and their souls are gathered,
and both are asked to give their opinions about each other. So each
one says to his friend: you were the worst brother, the worst companion
and the worst friend.
That is the end of those who do not have Taqwah and those who
befriend for a sake other than that of Allah the Exalted. Allah has surely
spoken the truth and we all should grasp what He has informed us of.
It is through the good company that Allah, the Most High, saves those
who are astray and guides the wicked. The benefit of mixing with the
righteous is immense, and it will, inshaallah, be even more obvious
to us in the Hereafter. One of the early Muslims said that it is from
Allahs blessings upon a youth when he turns to worship that he is
given a brother who is a follower of the Sunnah encouraging him
upon it.
In two other authentic narrations of the Prophet (s.a.w.) we were
commanded to keep company with a believer only(Abu Dawood and
at-Tirmidhee), and told that a person will be with those he loves(AlBukhary and Muslim) . So if we love and associate ourselves with
those who are misguided, we should fear for our fate. The wise
person is the one who prepares himself for the Hereafter, not the one
who neglects his faith and falls into the trap of Satan who tells him
that he will be forgiven and that he can do whatever he wishes. If we
truly believe that the best speech is the Speech of Allah and that the
best guidance is the guidance of Prophet Muhammad (peace be
upon him), we should act in accordance with them, lest we build a
proof against ourselves. Ali (r.a.a.) said: Mix with the noble people,
you become one of them; and keep away from evil people to protect
yourself from their evils. If we are truly concerned about our fate, we
must come to this realisation: those who take us away from
remembering Allah, from obeying Him and His Prophet (peace be
upon him), those who fail to remind us of our daily prayers and those
who do not give us sincere advice in regard to our Deen; such are
really our foes and not our friends.
On the other side, a believer is the mirror of his brother(Abu Dawood
), and if he sees any faults in the other believer, he draws his attention
to it, helps him to give it up and helps him wipe away any evil that he
may have. Ibn Hazm said: Anyone who criticises you cares about your
friendship. Anyone who makes light of your faults cares nothing about
you.
How can we expect sincere advice and exhortation in regard to our
religion from those who are displeased with our Deen or are simply
indifferent? Are they going to help us achieve the purpose of our life, or
will they take us away from it? Will they desire for us Allahs pleasure
or is that completely irrelevant to them and not their concern at all? Are
they leading us to al-Jannah or to the Hellfire? These are the questions
we have to ask ourselves, lest we wake up after we die.

Israel Kills 47, Hits Lebanon Infrastructure

Israeli warplanes killed on Thursday at least 47 Lebanese civilians,
mostly children, in 50 air strikes across the tiny Arab country, wrecking
havoc on Lebanons infrastructure, including Beirut international
airport.
Hizbullah chief Hassan Nasrallah said the two Israeli soldiers had
been seized to force Israel to release prisoners, including Lebanons
longest-serving prisoner Samir Kantar, in prison since 1979.
Israel air planes fired several missiles at Beiruts Rafik al-Hariri
International Airport, forcing flights to divert to Cyprus.
Two hours after the airport raid, an Israeli helicopter fired a missile
at the headquarters of Hizbollahs al-Manar TV in the Beirut suburb
of Haret Hreik, wounding six people.
One of the wounded was an al-Manar employee, the stations director
said.
The Lebanese resistance retailed the Israeli attacks, firing a volley
of Katyusha rockets into northern Israel.
In response to the massacres of civilians in the south and assaults
on infrastructure, the Islamic bombarded ... the settlement of Nahariya
in northern occupied Palestine with 60 rockets, said a statement by
Hizbullah.
The attack killed an Israeli woman and wounded several others,
Israeli medical sources said.
The resistance group also said it had fired long-range missiles,
dubbed Raad 1, on an Israeli air base in northern Israel, scoring
direct hits.
Hizbullah chief asserted in a press conference Wednesday that his
group was not seeking to escalate the situation with Israel. We only
want our prisoners back, said Nasrallah. He underlined that a
prisoner swap like that done in 2004 between his group and Israel
would be the only solution to return the Israeli soldiers.
Nasrallah warned Israel that his resistance fighters would retaliate
Israeli aggressions against Lebanese civilians.

Haniyeh: Israel Must resolve issues from

1948 to achieve peace
Palestinian Prime Minister Ismail Haniyeh said in remarks
published Tuesday that only through resolving the core issues
dating from 1948 rather than the secondary ones from 1967,
can there be a fair and permanent peace between Israel and
the Palestinians.
In an opinion piece in the Washington Post, Haniyeh puts forward
a formula to facilitate the resumption of negotiations between
Israel and the Palestinians.
The dispute is not only about Gaza and the West Bank, Haniyeh
writes, it is a wider national conflict that can be resolved only by
addressing the full dimensions of Palestinian national rights in
an integrated manner. This means statehood for the West Bank
and Gaza, a capital in Arab East Jerusalem, and resolving the
1948 Palestinian refugee issue fairly, on the basis of international
legitimacy and established law.
Only once this tremendous labor has begun, he states, can
there be meaningful negotiations with a non-expansionist, lawabiding Israel.
He accuses Israel of using the abduction of one of its soldiers by
the Hamas military wing, among others, as a pretext for a job
scheduled months ago.
This job, he says, is to destroy the results of fair and free elections
held early this year, in which his party rose to power, ousting
Palestinian Authority Chairman Mahmoud Abbas.
Show solidarity with the Palestinian
people by boycotting the following
companies and products which are
actively supporting the Israel
atrocities against the Palestinian
population.

Nairobi Masaajid Joint Programme Faith in Action

Unity and good leadership in the Ummah

The Kenyan Muslim community constitutes about 30% of the
country population. This is a numerical strength of no mean
feat despite the Ummah continued lackluster performance in
national discourses and programmes. One is likely to question
why this numerical advantage has not matured into meaningful
fruits in other fields, say education, health, employment and
politics. In fact the community presence in the socio-economic
and political life of the nation is peripheral and creates a fertile
ground for debilitating marginalization.
While Islam is based on clarity and purity of purpose, our
leadership in all assessment and fairness, does not measure
up to the basic values and tenets of Islam. If it did, the Muslim
Ummah in Kenya would glitter with unparalleled degree of
progress and success in the socio-economic and political
spheres of the nation. Although there are considerable gains in
certain areas, the experience so far largely reveal worrying levels
of poverty and under-development. One therefore is tempted to
interrogate the position of leadership especially in the face of
the many ills afflicting the souls of Muslims and the many
challenges facing the Muslim Ummah today.
This sorry state of affairs is presenting a justification for
propaganda and lies aimed at presenting Islam as a religion of
poverty and since people have to compete for limited resources
especially in dry areas, a scheme is being generated to show
that Islam is synonymous with violence. This is why the media
is awash with incidences of wars, conflicts and the growing
negative publicity apparently on Islam and Muslims generally.
It is possible to find solutions to these problems and many
more challenges likely to be encountered if issues of community
leadership are taken seriously and accorded the requisite
attention. It is instructive that our leaders step forward together
in commitment and service above self by cementing unity and
inculcating accountability and transparency in leadership.
Through responsive community leadership, it would be possible
to overcome differences, pettiness, prejudices and live the true
Islamic life spirited by values as to equity, human dignity,
progress and community empowerment.
That instead of investing both time and resources in un-ending
blame game of who is right and who is wrong; our leadership
should join hands in making the future of the Ummah a better
future for all. Such a leadership is anchored on dialogue, respect
for one another, service above self, complimentarity of roles,
