APOSTLES 3 JULY 2016

THE CALLING OF THE APOSTLES

According to the Gospel of St Luke, (which is a longer, more detailed account) after
unsuccessfully toiling all night, a group of Fishermen were addressed by our
Lord Jesus Christ who told them to cast their nets on the other side of the boat.
At first, being experienced Fishermen, they were sceptical, but when they obeyed
Him, the Miraculous Catch was so large, it required assistance to pull the nets
into the boat.
Immediately realising that our Lord was Someone Extraordinary, the impulsive St
(Simon) Peter ...fell down at Jesus Feet, saying Depart from me, for I am a sinful
man, O Lord!.
And yet, our Lord specifically Called St Peter to His Apostolic Ministry - a man who,
by his own admission, was sinful and unworthy of so great a Calling!
By doing so, Christ shows His true understanding of our human condition, because if
He had chosen perfect, Holy men, they would have had very little sympathy for
the failings and weaknesses of others.
By choosing imperfect vessels to carry His Good News, our Lord Jesus shows us that
Mercy and Forgiveness is available to all who seek It.
St Peter had respectfully informed our Lord that they had worked all night. Fishing
was hard work, which required patience, stamina, and physical strength to
stand for long hours, throwing heavy rope nets into the water and then hauling
them up by hand, repeating the process for hours throughout the darkness of
night.
If they did not work, they would not be able to eat nor feed their families - or receive
an income from the sale of the excess catches.
St Peter and his fellow Fishermen understood the value and significance of hard
work.
The Apostolic Ministry of the Holy Church of Christ requires efforts no less strenuous
or exhausting.
Our Labours on behalf of Christ can seem overwhelming at times, but if we do not
share, preach, teach and fulfil the Good News of the New Covenant, the Church
would starve and become ineffective!
Humility and Obedience are two most essential Virtues that any Faithful Disciple of
Christ requires in order to fulfil our Sacred Calling.
Although the Fishermen had worked throughout the night and were
understandably exhausted, St Peter agreed to do what our Lord had asked
despite it being a most strange request according to the vast experience of these
Fishermen!
St Peter and his fellow Fishermen knew where the fish were to be located and
where they were not. Yet, in Obedience to Christ, they agreed to cast their net
one more time - on the other side of the boat.
In his humble Obedience to Christ St Peter set very good example for all Believers to
emulate.
On that day our Lord Jesus Christ Called His first Apostles to His Divine Mission that
will radically change the history of the entire world and all mankind.
Our Gracious Saviour never sought out those who were considerd by others as
being perfect, educated, or of high social status.
He avoided the professionals as well as the religious, and instead, He sought out
those people who were simple, humble, and hard working, whom He then
Authorised and Empowered to Transform and Transfigure the whole world and
its people throughout the ages.
Our Lord Jesus Christ seeks those who possess three basic characteristics:
(1)
recognition of ones imperfections;
(2)
willingness to Labour long, hard and ceaselessly
(3)
Obedience to Christs Commandments and Teachings
2.

brother, casting a net into the sea;
for they were fishermen.
He said to them: Come, follow
Me, and I will make you Fishers of
Men.
immediately left their nets and
followed Him.

And

In his Commentary on the Event of the Miraculous Catch, St Cyril of Alexandria

wrote: Observe - neither Simon Peter nor his companions could draw the nets
to land. Therefore, being speechless from fear and astonishment they
beckoned to their partners, those, that is, who shared their labours in fishing,
to come and help them in securing their catch.
For many have taken part with the Holy Apostles and their Labours and still must
do so today. For today, the Net of Christ must be drawn and summon unto
Conversion those who are in the depths of the sea, those who live in the surge
and waves of worldly affairs. Our Lord needs Fishermen today.
The greatest tragedy of the contemporary Church is that we have left Gods Work to
the professional class of Clergy who have less and less time to do Gods Work.
Where are you today? What do you do? Are you a tent maker, a fisherman, a
mother, a doctor, a soldier? Do you sell real estate? Are you an accountant? Are
you retired? Are you a teacher? What do you do?
Whatever you do, wherever you do it, however you do it, God is Calling you to His
Apostolic Work.
In the Creed of Faith, we confess our belief in One, Holy Catholic and Apostolic
Church. This means that we are not merely a Church of the Apostlesbut that
we are a Church of Apostles.
Look at the Icons that adorn our Sanctuary.
Did St George attend Seminary College? Did St Irene have a Degree from Holy
Cross? Was St Moses the Ethiopian a perfect, holy man prior to his Conversion?
It is not training that our Lord is looking for. It is a willing heart.
Can you confess your imperfections before Him and then reach those who are
imperfect for Him? Can you acknowledge and commit to the Work that is
necessary to bring souls to Salvation?
And most importantly, can you be Obedient to the Call of God to become an
Apostle?
It is not enough of us Orthodox to be proud of our Apostolic roots.
We need to become a Church of contemporary Apostles.
