Cromer RNLI staff were buoyed by a visit from the charitys top
brass on Tuesday 14th June 2016
The Coastal Review team from RNLI headquarters at Poole
visited the station at the end of the Pier as well as making a tour
of the Henry Blogg Museum. The team were met by Lifeboat
Operations Manager Richard Leeds and Chairman Tony Webster.
A review of all the RNLI lifeboat stations takes place every five
years and this week the team visited stations on the East coast of
England from Hunstanton to Yarmouth.
The purpose of the review is to see how stations are working in
each area, and to decide if any changes might be needed to ensure
that the RNLI continues to deliver lifesaving around the coast in
the most effective, safe and viable manner.
The team of volunteers and professionals was headed by Vice
Admiral Sir Timothy Laurence KCVO CB ADC(P), Chairman of
the RNLI Operations Committee together with representatives of
operations, engineering and asset management and community
life-saving.

LETTERS CONTINUED
FROM PAGE 3.
Dear Editor
Regarding pollution in the North Sea and Protection From the European Union. The EU will never be able to solve the pollution
problems in the North Sea it might look clean however, there are now many unseen pollutants in the North Sea, for instance
Glyphosate which is found in weedkillers this chemical is used in many countries throughout the world and is usually sprayed on
GM Crops it is linked to causing cancer, Glyphosate has been found in over 75% of air and rain samples and has been detected
in North Sea Seawater, the European Union has at the moment put a ban on the growing of GM crops in the Eurozone and has
commented that it might be going to ban this Glyphosate this is probably due to the enormous pressure from public opinion
in Europe there has recently been a petition raised by the public to ban the stuff getting over 2 million signatures nevertheless
there always seems to be a halt to the EUs decision to ban this chemical when lobbied by the manufacturers of it. The EU
is also quite hypocritical in that it imports enormous amounts of soya beans that have likely been sprayed with Glysophate.
An equally pressing pollution problem is that many personal care product manufacturers use nano size plastic microbeads in
toothpastes, face scrubs, shower gels, shampoos, lip gloss, sunblocks and deodorants these extgremely small micro beads of plastic
are so tiny they are able to pass through current water treatment filters much of this contaminated water especially during heavy
rainfall enters the environment importantly they cannot be seen by the naked eye and are not biodegradable. Many companies
have voluntarily said that they will stop using them, but not all. It has been estimated that the oceans of the world contain many
millions of tons of this toxic material, fish consume it and humans in turn eat the fish,it is harmful to all manner of marine life.
Europe it is suggested uses around four thousand tons of these microbead particles a year, bans have been forcast but as usual
the action is painfully slow. In addition the North Sea contains nitrates, phospates, oil, acid rain, illegal animal slurry run off and
industrial waste goodness only knows whats in that and it is now well known that diesel fumes from ships is very prominent
in coastal areas, there are also far more toxic chemicals that are extremely harmful to human health which are in the seas you
mght be interested to do your own research on these. Therefore pollution is still a huge problem that needs to be dealt with by
goverments worldwide, its not just sewage that was problematic but a whole host of of probably much more dangerous toxic
waste and chemicals that urgently need to be dealt with. It is not just a North Sea problem but a worldwide problem. The EU
has the power to at least do something about these dangerous pollutants, but big busines who create these abnoxious products
seems to have even greater powers and constantly overide Goverment decisions by lobbying and bribes, many of the so-called
elite of this world will eventually destroy everything on this planet if we let them in their greedy pursuit of money and power.
Its high time for us all members of the public to have our say for once and Brexit by voting leave.
Thank You Charles Watts
A powerful and detailed letter but the result of the referendum will already be known when you read this.

To mark the centenary of the Battle of the Somme, Cromer Town Council, Cromer Parish Church and the Royal British Legion are
calling on the people of Cromer to commemorate those who made the ultimate sacrifice. This will be the main event in Norfolk to
commemorate the Battle of the Somme.
As part of the nations Remembrance of the Battle of the Somme, the group which is part of the Cromer War-Memorial Restoration
Committeehas invited individuals and organisations to participate in an 18-hour vigil where they stand as an honour guard at the
Cromer War Memorial in hourly intervals ending at midnight on Friday 01-July.
At the time the vigil ends, a service of Remembrance will commence led by the Rev. James Porter, the Vicar of Cromer. The service
will conclude with a laying of wreaths which have been specially designed by the Royal British Legion to mark the 100th year since
the Battle of the Somme.
The event will take place at the Cromer War Memorial in the grounds of the Parish Church, High Street Cromer with the vigil
commencing at 6:00pm on Thursday 30-June-16 and continuing for 18 hours through the night ending at mid-day on Friday 01-July.
The Battle of the Somme took place from 1 July to 18 November 1916 and has come to symbolise the enormous losses and dreadful
conditions of the First World War. Every community across the UK was deeply affected by the loss of men who had gone to fight at
the Battle of the Somme, including Cromer where it is believed that 17 of its men died as a result of the conflict.
The event organiser Cromer Town Councillor, David Pritchard said: Following-on from the success of the service and concert to
mark the centenary of the commencement of World War One in August 2014, I was asked to organise a further event. There are
so many significant dates 100 years on but I felt that with the half-way mark of the conflict on 21-June, it seemed appropriate that
the Battle of Somme should be marked in some way. With similar event taking place at Westminster Abbey and other significant
memorials around the country, I thought we should mark this important occasion in a similar manner.
Through the four years that mark the centenary, fund raising has been taking place to repair and renovate the Cromer War Memorial
and recently achieving the half-way mark of 21,000, the War Memorial Fund Raising Committee is waiting to hear the outcome of
their application for funding from the War Memorial Trust.
