Raut

Introduction
An infectious and contagious disease of poultry characterized by
respiratory rales, coughing and nasal discharge. Occurs in every flock especially
under bad management. Clinical manifestations are slow to develop and the disease
has long course. 4-10 weeks old birds especially broilers and turkeys are
susceptible. Sometimes occurs as complicated disease i.e. cCRD
Etiology
Mycoplasma gallisepticum
Epizootiology

Occurrence Worldwide in distribution

Transmission
primarily through eggs
air borne dust or droplets
sometimes carriers
fomites in between two farms
Route of infection: URT or conjuctiva
Incubation period: 6-21 days

Symptoms

sneezing, coughing, respiratory distress

gargling sound during respiration
tracheal rales, nasal discharge, dyspnoea
reduced egg production (upto 50%)
frothy exudate in eyes, conjunctivitis
swollen periorbital sinuses
reduced feed intake

loss of body weight

downgrade of carcasses

Postmortem findings

cloudy appearance air sacs (air-sacculitis)

sometimes cheesy material in the air sacs
catarrhal exudate in respiratory tract
sinusitis in turkeys
trachea and conjunctiva inflammed and congested
In cases complicated with E. coli
pericarditis
fibrinous covering on liver
perihepatitis

Diagnosis

By clinical signs and PM lesions

mostly air sacs are involved (air- sacculitis)
respiratory rales, coughing, nasal discharge
Isolation of the organism
Serology: Immunofluorescence, ELISA, FAT
Serum Plate Agglutination test is reliable
Animal inoculation test
HI test

Differential Diagnosis

Infectious Bronchitis: decrease in egg quality & egg production, nephritis

Infectious Laryngotracheitis; expectoration of bloody mucous, neck
extension, gasping, bloody nasal discharge, oviduct lesions
New Castle Disease: nervous signs
Infectious Coryza: swollen head, foul smelling discharge from nostrils &
eyes, facial edema
Colibacillosis: diarrhoea, pasty vent, depression
Aspergillosis: emaciation, increased thirst, accelerated breathing, cheesy
material under the eye lids

Treatment

Antibiotic therapy
Tylosin, Azithromycin, Erythromycin
Tiamulin, Enrofloxacin, OTC, CTC
Vitamin A
Bronchodilators e.g. Bromhexine
Immunostimulants
Breeders: eggs dipping in antibiotics

Control Measures

Adapt Mycoplasma free flock

Improve feeding & management

Reduce crowding & dust in poultry house
Preventive medication through feed
Treatment of hatching eggs
Vaccination
Live: at 10 days
Killed: 3-4 weeks before laying
