Trumps suggestion of a temporary

Invitation Claim Not True
US PRESIDENTIAL candidate Donald
Trump claims British Prime Minister
David Cameron has asked him to visit
London, but a UK spokesman says no
invitation has been extended.
The apparent crossed signals were
the latest sign of tension between the
presumptive US Republican Party
candidate and the leader of a major
US ally, who has criticised Mr Trumps
call for a temporary ban on Muslims
entering the United States.
They have asked me to visit 10

Trump told MSNBC. I will do just

WWII Decoding Machine Found On eBay

ONE OF THE machines used to send

coded messages between Adolf Hitler
and his generals sold for 10 on eBay
after being discovered in a shed in England, the buyer said last month.
Researchers at The National Museum
of Computing at Bletchley Park saw a
telegram machine for sale on the auction site for 9.50 ($14), and believed
it may have actually been a Lorenz
machine, used by the German army to
send top-secret coded messages.
My colleague was scanning eBay and
he saw a photograph of what seemed to
be the teleprinter, John Wetter, a volunteer at the museum in Buckinghamshire,
south England, told the BBC.
To investigate further, Wetter travelled to the southeastern town of Southend where he found the machine, which
resembles a typewriter, on the floor of a
shed, covered with rubbish.
We said Thank you very much, how
much was it again? She said 9.50, so
we said Heres a 10 note keep the
change, he added.
The museum is now hunting for

a replacement
motor, which is
missing.
It looks
like an electric
motor in black
casing with two
shafts on each
side, which
drive the gears
of the Lorenz
machine, said Wetter.
The Lorenz teleprinter was used in
World War II to swap personal messages
between Hitler and his generals.
A linked cipher machine consisting
of 12 individual wheels each containing
multiple settings encoded the messages.
Andy Clark, chairman of the trustees
at The National Museum of Computing,
called the machine far bigger than the
famous portable Enigma machine.
Everybody knows about Enigma,
but the Lorenz machine was used for
strategic communications, said Clark.
It is so much more complicated than
the Enigma machine.

RRBirmingham Men Accused

Of Helping Brussels Bombers

TWO Birmingham men were accused

in court last month of giving money to
a key suspect in the Brussels and Paris
bombings in a case that may link British
residents to those plots.
Prosecutors said in Westminster Magistrates Court that Mohammed Ali Ahmed
and Zakaria Boufassil, both 26, allegedly
gave more than 3,000 ($4,400) to suspect
Mohamed Abrini in Birmingham in July.
The two suspects are charged with
violating Britains Terrorism Act by
providing someone with money that they
knew, or had reason to believe, would be
used for terrorism.
Abrini, who is in custody, was the
man in the hat seen on video footage moments before the deadly March
22 bombings at Brussels airport that
killed 16 people. He was also wanted in
the November 13 attacks on Paris that
claimed 130 lives.
A third suspect from Birmingham,
Soumaya Boufassil, 29, was also charged
along with Ahmed with preparing acts
of terrorism between January 1, 2015
and April 8.

RRUK Will Accept Syrian

Children From Europe

BRITAINS government bowed to pressure last month and agreed to take in

some unaccompanied children from Syria
who have made their way to Europe.
Prime Minister David Camerons
office said children who registered in
Greece, Italy or France before March 20
when the European Union struck a deal to
return many migrants to Turkey would
be eligible to come to the UK It did not
specify how many Britain would accept.
The government said that the retrospective nature of its resettlement plan

will avoid creating a perverse incentive

for families to entrust their children to
people traffickers.
Britain has already agreed to resettle
up to 3,000 vulnerable child refugees
from the Middle East and Africa by 2020,
as well as 20,000 Syrians from Middle
Eastern refugee camps.
But the government had argued that
accepting children already in Europe
would encourage others to make the
dangerous journey.
Labour peer Alf Dubs, who came to
Britain on the 1930s kindertransports
of Jewish children from Nazi-occupied
Europe, led a campaign to get Camerons
Conservative government to change its
mind.

RRUK Court Says Police Cant

Make Hacker Hand Over
Passwords

A JUDGE has rejected an attempt by Britains security services to force an alleged

hacker to hand over the passwords to his
encrypted computers.
Lauri Love is fighting extradition to
the United States, where he has been
charged with breaking into Federal
Reserve computers.
When British police arrested him in
2013, they seized encrypted computers
and hard drives from his home in eastern
England. Love was not charged in Britain,
but the National Crime Agency sought
to look through his computers before
returning them.
Judge Nina Tempia ruled last month
that the agency as trying to circumvent
the Regulation of Investigatory Powers
Act, which governs data privacy.
Love said the decision retains the
status quo which means there has to be
safeguards before you force people to
undermine their security.

Cheeky Message From
Elementary School Boy
Has A Clear Dirty Impact

ASKED to design a poster to protect the

environment, the like of which your dad
would be proud, the elementary class got
to work las month.
It was posted on Reddit last month by
user starrynitess who said: We had a local
elementary school decorate paper bags for
Earth day and I found this one we had left
over. This kid lol.
Keep
the earth
clean

It isnt
Uranus
This was his (or her) suggestion to
mobilise the eco-army and get them reusing, reducing and recycling. Judging by the
poster, which shows Africa, America and
Europe reduced to blobs of land on an ocean
planet, it was suggested that will happen
sooner rather than later.

Newlyweds Unhappy With Gift

That Wasnt Generous Enough

AFTER being contacted by a newly-married

couple and told her gift wasnt generous
enough for them, the guest decided it was
worth sharing on a public web forum last
month.
The angry, unnamed wedding guest
posted her thoughts on Mumsnet asking for
advice after she was told the 100 cheque
she provided wasnt enough.
She revealed how the couple, who had
asked for cash gifts, had emailed to say they
were surprised by her contribution and
even suggested an adjustment.
The Happy couple added: In view of
your own position, if you wanted to send any
adjustment it would be thankfully received.
The poster surmised that the reference to
her position was most likely about a recent
inheritance.
A number of users suggested cancelling
the cheque, while others advised informing
mutual friends about what had happened.
One wrote: I would email back but BCC
any mutual friends in so they are able to see
the email for themselves or send a glitter
bomb as the extra part of her gift!
The poster said she was surprised by the
level of response and added that in the end
she chose to reply with one sentence.
I assume this was some sort of mistake?

Police Outnumber Protesters 4 To 1

At Cancelled Anti-Islam March

DONALD TRUMP would have been very

disappointed last month when an anti-Islam
march had to be cancelled due to only 24
people turning up.
Burtons Islam-battling Casual Infidels
groups anti-Islam march didnt go quite to
plan when 24 people turned up. So they
wandered around for a few minutes, and
then went home.
The Casual Infidels movement, branches
of which, they say, are popping up all over

the country, describes itself as a freelancing movement which battles Islam.

Unfortunately, on this Sunday morning last
month Staffordshire Police outnumbered
them four to one and told them to get on
with their march when they said they were
waiting for other people.
Finally, the Infidels wandered 200 yards
up the street to an area from which the leaders were supposed to give speeches.
Then, on surveying the scene and realising that there wasnt anyone to give
speeches to, they waited for five minutes
and then went home.
But, keeping things interesting, somehow,
two people ended up getting arrested, only
to be later un-arrested and given notice to
leave by police.
So, the march didnt go to plan.
But at least the weather was good.

Harry Potter, Lord Of The Rings

And Hunger Games Cause Brain
Damage Headmaster Claims

A HEADMASTER has come under fire after

claiming fantasy books like Harry Potter
cause mental illness.
Graeme Whiting has urged his pupils not
to read Lord of the Rings, the Hunger Games
and any Terry Pratchett books because they
encourage difficult behavior.
The alternative put forward by Pratchet
is for the pupils to read books by authors
such as Wordsworth, Keats, Shelley and
Shakespeare.
I want children to read literature that
is conducive to their age and leave those
mystical and frightening texts for when they
can discern reality, and when they have first
learned to love beauty, Whiting, head of the
independent Acorn School in Nailsworth,
Gloucester, wrote on his blog.
He added: Children are innocent and
pure at the same time, and dont need to be
mistreated by cramming their imagination
that lies deep within them, with inappropriate things.

High-Heels Parliament Petition

Could Bring Workplace Rule
Changes For Women

FOLLOWING a full shift in her receptionist

temp job Nicola Thorp wore flat shoes the
next day she was turned away from work.
Thorp, 27, told the London Evening Standard: I expressed my confusion as to why I
was being turned away from work, and they
explained that flat shoes are not part of their
dress code for women,
Thorp then decided to campaign against
it being legal for companies to have rules
saying women should wear heels (and
makeup) at work. She has now launched
a petition on the Parliament website calling
for it to be illegal for companies to demand
women wear heels.
Reflecting on her conflict at the office
Thorp said: The supervisor told me that I
would be sent home without pay unless I
went to the shop and bought a pair of two
to four inch heels. I refused and was sent
home.
Her employers, PwCs outsourced reception firm Portico, also apparently told her to
wear make up for the role and gave her a
colour chart of acceptable shades.
Thorp claims that when she said men
were allowed to wear flat shoes in the office,

TODAYS
BRITAIN

and that the heels rule was discriminatory,

she was laughed at.
A spokesperson for PwC told Metro.
co.uk: PwC outsources its front of house/
reception services to a third party supplier.
The dress code referenced in the article is
not a PwC policy. We are now in discussion
with the suppliers about the policy. We have
taken on board the comments regarding
footwear and will be reviewing our guidelines
in consultation with our clients and team
members.
Re Thorps Parliament approach As
with all Parliament.uk petitions, if it reaches
10,000 signatures the Government will
send a response. At 100,000 signatures,
the petition will be considered for a debate
in Parliament.

Just Like That! Historic Blue Plaque

On Home Of Tommy Cooper

COMEDIAN Tommy Cooper has been honoured with a blue memorial plaque on his
former west London home.
Cooper lived in the house with his wife
and two children from 1955 until his death
in 1984.
In a party atmosphere a crowd wearing
red fez hats chanted just like that as balloons were released to reveal the plaque in
Barrowgate Road, Chiswick.
The FA chairman Greg Dyke said as he
unveiled the plaque that Cooper was a
comic genius and none of us quite understand how and why but he was.
Tommy Coopers friend and colleague
Ken Dodd had supported the proposal for
a plaque, but was unable to attend the
ceremony.
Cooper died after collapsing during a live
broadcast from Her Majestys Theatre on

British Newspaper Closed

THE NEW DAY newspaper shut down last
month after only nine weeks after its circulation failed to meet expectations.
Trinity Mirror revealed the closure in a
trading update last month. The newspaper
the first title to launch in Britain in 30 years
had been seen as a counter to the trend of
declining newspaper sales in an online world.
Trinity Mirror had hoped The New Day
would stand out from other British newspapers by being politically neutral. While the
newspaper built a following on Facebook,
circulation fell far below the target of 200,000
copies a day.
Alison Phillips, the newspapers editor,
said in a message to staff that the company
had tried everything but was unable to make
it financially viable.
The newspaper closed May 6.

June 2016

Keep On Running
AS LONDON shivered through April, once again
the fantastic annual Virgin Money London Marathon saw thousands of people take to the streets
in the largest single charity fundraising event in
the world. Little did Pheidippides know quite
what he started when he ran from the battlefield
of Marathon to Athens to tell everyone about
the Greek victory over the Persians in 490BC!
But London did not come up with the idea of
a city marathon. No, that accolade belongs to
Boston which has had city dwellers pounding
the streets since 1897. London is a relative
newcomer, having only started the event in
1981 but has since become one of the six major
world marathons, the others being Boston,
Tokyo, Berlin, Chicago and New York City. In
that time, over one million runners have crossed
the finishing line in the UK capital, raising around
1Bn ($1.5Bn) for charities and good causes.
London can also claim credit for the length
of the modern marathon race (26.2 miles). This
was an increase on the original distance, which
was some four miles shorter, so that the Royal
Family could see both the start of the race at
Windsor Castle and the finish from the Royal
Box at White City Stadium in West London, at
the London Olympics in 1908.
Over 35 glorious years, the London Marathon
has become a major national and international
event, watched around the world on TV in over
200 countries. There is eccentricity and fun,
including this year a guy dressed up in full,
antique, deep-sea divers equipment, two lady
apples and a Pepperami of unknown sex!

The Streets of London

History, some of it quite gruesome, abounds

as you run, walk or crawl in a car through the
capital. Pudding Lane in the City of London is
famous as the location where the Great Fire,
which destroyed most of the medieval city,
started 350 years ago this year. But where does
that rather homely name come from? Actually
you probably wont want to know this, but it
derives from the street effectively being used
as a drain into the Thames for the entrails of
animals (known colloquially as pudding) from
local butcher shops!
Houndsditch on the edge of the East End
was where, yes, you may have guessed, the
capitals dead dogs were dumped and then
there is Bleeding Heart Yard, also in the City.
This rather pleasant cobbled courtyard was
apparently so-named after the gruesome murder of Lady Elizabeth Hatton in 1626. Her still
beating heart was found on those very cobbles
beside her mutilated body! Work continues at
the office of your columnist to find the history
behind Bollocks Terrace in Tooting, south west

London, so watch this space!

More generally, some interesting facts on
the streets of London have been sent in by a
good friend and reader of this column. He tells
me there are no Roads in the City of London
only Streets, Lanes, Squares etc. The
explanation is simple the word road was not
in general use before the late 16th Century, by
which time everything in the Square Mile had
already been named!
And moving to the smarter end of town,
London has a road which required a special act
of Parliament in 1902 to allow cars to drive on
the right and as such is the only road in the
United Kingdom where this is permitted. Savoy
Court leads from the Strand to the famous hotel
and whilst people claim it was to make American
hotel guests feel more at home or allow women,
who traditionally sit behind the chauffeur to
alight from a car on the side nearest the hotel
entrance, the answer is a little more mundane.
The Savoy theatre is on the corner of Savoy
Court and the Strand and there was a concern
that carriages and cars dropping people off or
picking them up would block the entrance to the
hotel! And quite right too as the queues around
the Savoy Theatre are big at the moment with
the wonderful Sheridan Smith appearing in the
lead role of Funny Girl.

New Tenant at City Hall

It was all a lot tighter than expected in the

battle to become the next Mayor of London,
one of the most powerful political positions in
the country.
Sadiq Khan, the former human rights lawyer

and son of an immigrant, Pakistani bus driver

won despite infighting in his own party and has
now become the first Muslim Mayor of London.
Regardless of politics, this result clearly demonstrates just how much progress the UK capital
has made, in terms of tolerance and multi-ethnic
integration, in the last thirty years.
Meanwhile, the son of the late Sir James
Goldsmith lost and the Conservative tenure
at County Hall (previously with Boris Johnson
as incumbent) came to an end. Zac therefore
remains the serving Member of Parliament for
the leafy west London suburb of Richmond
Upon Thames. His pledge to stop Heathrow
expansion was at the top of his agenda and he
says he will continue to fight this corner. For me
though, the most memorable part of his campaign was at one of his hustings meetings where
someone had scrawled words the and crack
on a poster beneath his slogan Back Zac!
A close shave indeed.

Much Ado About

Something

Last month saw the 400th anniversary of the

death of the worlds greatest playwright, William
Shakespeare. Known as the Bard of Avon,
Shakespeare moved to London in 1587 and it
was here he wrote much of his work.
It is less well-known that he was also a
leading actor in a company called the Lord
Chamberlains Men and performed in many
of his own and other plays at the newly built
Globe Theatre on Londons Southbank. Or that
he was also a shareholder in the theatre and
as his fame and wealth grew, he amassed a
property portfolio in London and Stratford which
would be the envy of any modern day investor!
The original Globe Theatre burned down on
June 29, 1613, in less than two hours, when
a theatrical canon set fire to the thatched roof
during a performance of Henry VIII, a collaborative play by Shakespeare and John Fletcher.
It was rebuilt the following year sadly only to be
torn down by the Puritans 30 years later! The
current painstaking reconstruction opened in
1997 and performs the Bards plays every day
of the week. It is well worth a visit to take in a
play or a guided tour.
Shakespeare retired to Stratford Upon Avon
and died there on April 23, 1616 at the age of 52.

Trump Says He Expects Poor Relationship With Cameron

Continued from page 1
Who knows, I hope to have a good relationship with him (Cameron) but hes not
willing to address the problem either.
Cameron has refused to retract comments Trumps proposed Muslim ban
as divisive, stupid and wrong. But
Camerons spokesman, Dan York-Smith,
told reporters that the prime minister
was committed to maintaining the
special relationship whoever wins the
presidential election.
He has been clear that he will work
with whoever is president of the United
States, York-Smith said.
In the interview, Trump also describes
Londons new mayor, Sadiq Khan, as
rude for calling him ignorant. The real
estate tycoon said he would remember
the mayors hostile reaction to the idea
that Khan, a Muslim, would be given an
exception to the temporary ban.
He doesnt know me, hasnt met me,
doesnt know what Im all about. I think
they were very rude statements and,
frankly, tell him I will remember those
statements, Trump said. They are very
nasty statements.
Trump denied he was at war with
Khan.
Khans office said American voters
would reject Trumps views.
Sadiq has spent his whole life fighting
extremism, but Trumps remarks make
that fight much harder for us all it plays
straight into the extremists hands and
makes both our countries less safe, his
office said in a statement.

Page 3

ujnews.com

When reminded Khan has described

Trump as ignorant, Trump shook his
head and said: Lets do an IQ test.

The mayors office hotly rejected the

idea, saying ignorance is not the same
thing as lack of intelligence.

KAHN: TRUMPS VIEWS IGNORANT

SOON AFTER being elected Khan slammed Donald Trump who said he would make an
exception for the new London Mayor being allowed into the US, saying: This isnt
just about me its about my friends, my family and everyone who comes from a
background similar to mine, anywhere in the world.
The new London mayor continued: Donald Trumps ignorant view of Islam could
make both our countries less safe it risks alienating mainstream Muslims around
the world and plays into the hands of the extremists. Donald Trump and those
around him think that western liberal values are incompatible with mainstream
Islam London has proved him wrong.

Labours Sadiq Khan Elected

1st Muslim London Mayor
RR By Jill Lawless and Danica Kirka

SADIQ KHAN became Londons first

Muslim mayor last month, as voters
rejected attempts to taint him with links to
extremism and handed a decisive victory
to the bus drivers son from south London.
The citys new mayor appealed to voters as a true child of Britains diverse and
dynamic capital. Like many Londoners,
hes the son of immigrants, born to parents who came to Britain from Pakistan.
Like more than one million of the citys
8.6 million residents, hes Muslim.
Khan hailed his victory as the triumph
of hope over fear and unity over division.
His victory was the most dramatic
result in local and regional elections that
produced few big changes but underscored Britains political divisions ahead
of a referendum on whether to remain in
the European Union.
Labour Party candidate Khan received
more than 1.3 million votes 57 percent
of the total to Conservative rival Zac
Goldsmiths 43 percent, after voters first
and second preferences were allocated.
Turnout was 45.6 percent, up from 38
percent in 2012.
REPLACE
Khan was elected to replace Conservative Mayor Boris Johnson after a campaign
marked and many said marred by USstyle negative campaigning. Goldsmith,
a wealthy environmentalist, called Khan
divisive and accused him of sharing
platforms with Islamic extremists a
charge repeated by Prime Minister David
Cameron and other senior Conservatives.
Khan, who calls himself the British

Muslim who will take the fight to the

extremists, accused Goldsmith of trying
to scare and divide voters in a proudly
multicultural city of 8.6 million people
more than one million of them Muslim.
The attacks, criticised by some senior
Conservatives, appear not to have
deterred voters from backing Khan.
London has seen attacks by Islamic
extremists, including July 2005 suicide
bombings that killed 52 bus and subway
commuters, but has avoided the level of
racial and religious tensions seen in some
European cities.
FEAR
Fear does not make us safer it only
makes us weaker, Khan said in his victory speech. And the politics of fear is
simply not welcome in our city.
Labour, Britains main opposition
party, performed strongly in the capital,
taking more than 40 percent of Londoners votes. That and Khans victory were
bright spots for Labour, which was pushed
into third place in Scotland, where it was
once dominant.

Boaty McBoatface Contest A Success

THERES NO sinking feeling for the

scientists who inadvertently gave the
world Boaty McBoatface. In fact, theyre
buoyant.
The leader of Britains Natural Environment Research Council said last
month that its name-the-ship competition,
which drew global attention when it was
won by a jokey Mc-moniker, was an
incredible success.
Parliaments Science and Technology
Committee grilled council officials about
the contest, which invited the public to help
name a new 200m polar research vessel.
Boaty McBoatface was suggested
by a former BBC radio host, and drew
124,000 votes, more than three times its
nearest rival.
Despite the vote, the vessel was
christened Sir David Attenborough in
honour of the naturalist and broadcaster
though one of the ships remotely operated submarines is being named Boaty
McBoatface.

Some Boaty-backers took the decision

badly, expressing anger that their views
had been disregarded.
The committee is studying science
communication, and wanted to know
whether the research council considered
the contest a success or, as committee
chairwoman Nicola Blackwood, put it,
would staff have to walk the plank?
Council chief executive Duncan Wingham said that far from being an embarrassment, the contest was an astonishingly great outcome for us. In addition,
it has put a smile on everybodys face.
Although Boaty McBoatface was the
tagline that took the story around the
world, we can see evidence time and time
again of people reading about the boat,
reading about the science and learning
more about the work that we do, he said.
Half a million people visited its website
during the competition, and 214 million
Twitter users were reached through the
hashtag boatymcboatface.

Cameron Says Leaving EU Would Bring

Decade Of Uncertainty, Increase Risk Of War
RR By Jill Lawless

RAISING the stakes in Britains European

Union membership debate, Prime Minister David Cameron said last month that
leaving the bloc would increase the risk
of war in Europe.
Camerons speech on national security
came as campaigning ahead of a June 23
vote on the countrys EU membership
moved into its final weeks.
Cameron said it would be rash to
assume that peace and stability on our
continent are assured beyond any shadow
of doubt. He said the EU has helped
reconcile countries which were at each
others throats for decades.
Britain has a fundamental national
interest in maintaining common purpose
in Europe to avoid future conflict between
European countries, he said.
Cameron argued that isolationism has
never served this country well. Whenever
we turn our back on Europe, sooner or
later we come to regret it.
HIGHLIGHTED
The EU was founded after World War
II, in part to prevent the continents
nations from waging war ever again. But
terrorist attacks in Paris and Brussels
and the arrival of hundreds of thousands
of migrants from the Middle East, Asia
and Africa have highlighted the security
challenges facing the bloc.
The two sides in Britains referendum
debate have argued bitterly over whether
leaving the 28-nation union would make
Britain more or less secure. Two former
UK intelligence chiefs said in an interview
published last month that the EU gives
Britain an edge in gathering anti-terror
intelligence and underpins continental
peace.
Cameron said that, with the fight

June 2016

against the Islamic State group raging and

an assertive Russia flexing its muscles,
now is a time for strength in numbers.
ARGUING
The anti-EU group Vote Leave called
Camerons claims historically illiterate,
arguing that NATO contributes far more to
European peace and security than the EU.
The notion that the peace of Europe
was guaranteed by the institutions of
the European Union was always utter
nonsense, said Robert Cowcroft of the
University of Edinburgh, a member of
Historians for Britain, an anti-EU group.
Former London Mayor Boris Johnson,

a leader of the Vote Leave campaign, said

the 1990s Balkan wars on the EUs doorstep showed the bloc was no guarantee
of peace.
I saw the disaster when the EU was
charged with sorting out former Yugoslavia, and I saw how NATO sorted it out,
Johnson said in a London speech.
I dont believe that leaving the EU
would cause World War III to break out
on the European continent.
The Prime Minister also said that advocates of leaving the European Union have
not thought through its economic impact,
warning that an exit would spark a decade
of uncertainty.

Top UK Court Rules Against Expats

Over EU Referendum Voting
BRITAINS Supreme Court has rejected a
bid by two Britons who live abroad to vote
in this months referendum on European
Union membership.
British citizens who have lived abroad
for more than 15 years are not eligible to
cast a ballot in the June 23 vote.
A London-born World War II veteran
who lives in Italy and a Scottish lawyer
who lives in Belgium argued the 15-year

cutoff was arbitrary and unfair.

But the Supreme Court, on May 17,
denied the pair permission to appeal
lower court judgments that the rule did not
amount to an unjustified restriction on their
freedom of movement and right to vote.
Judge Brenda Hale said the court
had considerable sympathy for the
applicants, but would not strike down the
15-year rule.

UK Tabloid Reprimanded For Claiming

Queen Supports Brexit

BRITAINS press regulator has reprimanded tabloid newspaper The Sun for
claiming the Queen wants the UK to
leave the European Union.
The Independent Press Standards
Organization says the headline Queen
Backs Brexit made a factual assertion
that the queen had expressed a position

in the referendum debate that wasnt

supported by the accompanying article.
Buckingham Palace complained to the
regulator about the March article, which
claimed the queen had criticised the EU
during functions with politicians.
The monarch is expected to remain
politically neutral and not express opinions on issues such
as Britains upcoming referendum on
whether to remain in
the EU.
The Sun published
the watchdogs ruling
in an edition. But editor Tony Gallagher
said he didnt accept
that the paper had
made an error.

British Exit Risk Casts

Shadow Over EUs
Economic Source
RR By Pan Pylas

HALF A CENTURY ago, French President Charles de Gaulle twice vetoed

Britain from joining what was then the
European Economic Community, warning that the countrys fundamental
hostility to economic integration could
sabotage the bloc.
In just over three weeks, the British
could be fulfilling that prediction when
they vote on whether to leave the European Union, a move that would be the
biggest reverse in the blocs near 60-year
existence and a threat to its economy.
A vote for a British exit from the EU
so-called Brexit on June 23 would likely
trigger turmoil in financial markets and
uncertainty for businesses, jolting the
regions economy.
The real damage may take longer
to emerge. The fear in continental
Europe is that the UKs departure could
prompt other countries to seek changes
to their EU membership. In a worstcase scenario, it could usher in a new
era of nationalism that diminishes the
drive to strengthen economic ties and
undermines the EUs core purposes:
the freedom to trade and move between
countries.
It could be another torpedo in the
ship of the EU, said Jan Bryson, global
economist at Wells Fargo Bank. Brexit
could set a precedent and it could raise
questions about the future of the EU
itself.
DE GAULLE
In 1963 De Gaulle warned the other
five founding members of the bloc that
Britains culture was too different to be
interested in long-term integration. He
had first-hand knowledge of Britain, having spent most of World War II in London
organizing the French resistance.
Non, he said in 1963, and again four
years later, to Britains attempt to join.
The country eventually joined in 1973,
after de Gaulle resigned in 1969.
The immediate aftermath of a British
vote to leave the EU would likely see
huge volatility in financial markets.
Many forecasters predict the British
pound would fall as much as 20 percent
in the following days. Worries over the
vote have already seen the pound drop
this year to a seven-year low against the
dollar. Though a weaker pound may help
Britains exporters, it would hurt European firms exporting to Britain.
The instability would discourage businesses from investing or hiring. Surveys
of companies have already shown some
executives, mainly in Britain but also the
eurozone, becoming more cautious in the
run-up to the vote.
Some say, that given the size of the
commercial relationship, a Brexit,
would see the EU likely try to secure a
trade deal with Britain swiftly. Others
think the EU would look to punish Britain whatever the economic cost to
discourage other states from going down
the same route.

UK Treasury: House
Prices Will Plummet
If Britain Leaves EU
RR By Jill Lawless

BRITISH HOUSE prices could fall by up

to 18 percent if the country leaves the
European Union, the Treasury says a
claim dismissed as scaremongering by
campaigners for a UK exit from the bloc.
Treasury chief George Osborne said
leaving the EU would be a profound economic shock that would lower property
values and raise mortgage rates.
Treasury analysis estimates property
prices will be worth between 10 and 18
percent less by 2018 if Britain leaves
than if it stays.
British house prices rose nine percent
in the year to March, and the value of
property is something of a national obsession especially in London, where the
average home costs 535,000, more than
10 times the average annual household
income.
Some economists think a fall in house
prices would be a good thing because it
would help new buyers currently priced
out of the market. Others argue any benefit
would be offset by a rise in mortgage rates
and economic instability.

UKs Former Spy Chiefs

Say Britain More
Secure Inside EU

BRITAINS former spy chiefs have asked

voters to keep the United Kingdom inside
the European Union, arguing that the alliance gives their nation an edge in gathering anti-terror intelligence and underpins
continental peace.
Last months published appeal by former MI5 director-general Jonathan Evans
and former MI6 chief John Sawers sparked
a fierce rebuttal from campaigners seeking
a British exit from the 28-nation EU in the
June 23 referendum.
The intelligence experts joint interview
in the Sunday Times newspaper emphasized their view that EU membership
meant Britain could shape key policies on
sharing anti-terror intelligence. Sawers
said in an accompanying video interview
that a British exit would weaken the
bloc and potentially promote its political
unraveling.
Pro-exit campaigners countered that a
non-EU Britain would share intelligence
unhindered and defend its borders better.

Pound Exchange Up
As Markets See Lower
Risk Of EU Exit

THE POUND posted strong gains last

month as market expectations waned
somewhat of a British exit from the European Union, so-called Brexit.
With less than a month to go before the
June 23 referendum on Britains future
in the 28-country EU, bookmakers have
slashed their odds on a remain vote.
On May 24, some were offering as little
as 1-7 1 in return for a 7 bet, half
as generous as just a couple of weeks
back. The odds of a Brexit have widened
to around 4-1 over the same time period
following a string of polls suggesting that
the remain camp is building up a sizeable lead.
This puts the chance of Brexit close to
20 percent after adjusting for the bookmakers margins, said Mark Dampier,
head of investment research at Londonbased stockbrokers Hargreaves Lansdown.
That fairly limited expectation of a Brexit
vote has helped the pound claw back some
ground, the pound was up 0.8 percent to
a near-month high of $1.4595 following
a poll showing the remain camp with a
13-point lead.
The economic uncertainty that a Brexit
vote would likely entail has been one of
the major factors hurting the pound this
year. In February, the currency fell to a
seven-year low of $1.3873.

Celebs Urge Britain To Stay In EU

RR By Jill Lawless

US Government To Raise
Immigration Filing Fees

THE DEPARTMENT of Homeland Security is proposing increases in the filing fees for many USCIS petitions and applications. The proposed regulation would
raise the fees for most employment-based petitions
and applications by an average of 21 percent, though
fee increases for some filings would be significantly
higher. According to DHS, the higher fees reflect the
current cost of processing immigration applications
and petitions; some portion of the increased fees
would provide additional funding for refugee and
citizenship programs as well as system support for
interagency immigration status verification databases.
The filing fee for the popular Form I-129, the nonimmigrant worker petition, would increase to $460,
from $325. The fee for Form I-140, the immigrant
worker petition, would increase to $700, from $580.
Applications under the EB-5 Immigrant Investor
Visa Program would be subject to the most substantial fee increases. Regional Centers applying for
designation under the program would pay a filing
fee of $17,795, up from $6,230. They would pay
an annual fee of $3,035 to certify their continued
eligibility for the designation; currently, there is no fee
for the annual certification. The fee for the immigrant
investor petition would more than double, though the
fee for an investors petition to remove conditions on
residence would be unchanged.
The proposed rule would also introduce a threetiered fee structure for naturalization applicants a
standard filing fee for most applicants, a reduced
fee for those whose family income is greater than
150 percent but less than 200 percent of the Federal
Poverty Guidelines, and no fee for certain applicants
in the military and others who qualify for a fee waiver.
DHS is seeking feedback on the proposed fee
schedule, and public comments will be accepted
for 60 days from its publication on May 5, 2016.
Increases to USCIS filing fees would not take effect
until the regulation clears the federal approval process, which typically takes several months.

If the proposed fee changes are implemented,
employers and foreign nationals would see higher

the proposed fee schedule into consideration when
budgeting for immigration-related expenses.

IF CELEBRITY power were

votes, Britains European Union
membership would be secure.
Almost 300 actors, writers,
musicians and other cultural figures appealed last month for British voters to back the remain
side in the June 23 EU membership
referendum.
Signatories from the acting
world included Sherlock star
Benedict Cumberbatch, X-Men
superhero Patrick Stewart, Jude
Law, Bill Nighy, Keira Knightley,
Kristin Scott Thomas, Chiwetel
Ejiofor and Helena Bonham Carter.
They were joined by spy novelist John le Carre, Wolf Hall writer
Hilary Mantel, fashion designer
Vivienne Westwood, Slumdog
Millionaire director Danny Boyle,
singer Paloma Faith and the mem-

bers of rock band Franz Ferdinand.

The letter said many creative
projects would never have happened without vital EU funding or
by collaborating across borders.
INSPIRES
From the Bard to Bowie, British creativity inspires and influences the rest of the world. We
believe that being part of the EU
bolsters Britains leading role on
the world stage, the signatories
said. Lets not become an outsider
shouting from the wings.
Culture is one of Britains biggest exports. Data released last
month by the British Phonographic
Industry showed than one in six
music albums sold in 2015 was by a
British act, and UK actors regularly
headline Hollywood films.
Prime Minister David Cameron
underscored the artists remain

message with a visit to Londons

Abbey Road Studios, where the
Beatles once recorded. He met
signatories to the letter including
The Wire star Dominic West and
sculptor Anish Kapoor.
Most of the generally liberal arts
community backs remaining in the
EU, but the support is not absolute. Brexit-backing entertainers
include actor Michael Caine and
singer Roger Daltrey of The Who.
Writer and Conservative peer
Michael Dobbs who wrote the
original British 1990s series
House of Cards said Britains
creative industries were booming
because of the talent that is in
Britains DNA, and not because
of the EU.
The EU, Dobbs said, is failing.
The dream is dead. We need to
move on.

Politics Gets Messy

Presenter Robert McKenzie with the swingometer on election night, 1964 Photo: BBC
THERE WAS a time when British politics
were straightforward. On election nights,
Robert Mackenzie would be in charge of the
BBC Swingometer which swung one way
or another to indicate whether the voters
favoured left or right. At the end of the night,
the sums were neat a five percent swing
to the right put the Conservatives in power.
To the left and it was Labours turn.
Nowadays it is all much messier as shown
by the local government elections at the
beginning of last month.
Conventional wisdom has it that the party
in power suffers heavy losses while the
opposition starts to rebuild itself ready for
government four or three years hence. Thus
if the governing party does badly, it is no
surprise; while if the opposition does badly,
for them it is a disaster.
To some extent that is still true but there is
a further complicating factor these days: that
there are three regional assemblies Northern Ireland, Wales and Scotland whose
results produce more confusing pictures.
The Irish have always been a bit of a
mystery with a proliferation of small parties
bearing no resemblance to what happens on
mainland Britain. As far as one can tell, it will
be very much business as usual, Unionist
parties sharing power with Sinn Fein.
SIGNIFICANT
In Wales this May, there were one or two
significant developments. Labour maintained
its hold on power with just under half the
seats. Welsh nationalism is not a very powerful cause though the leader of Plaid Cymru
picked up a seat in the Rhondda. More sig-

nificantly the United

Kingdom Independence Party (UKIP)
registered its first
Assembly members.
Since they appear to
have no policy other
than that of leaving
the European Union,
it is hard to understand why anyone in
Wales would bother
to vote for them.
But what their success, albeit limited this
time, would appear to indicate is that UKIP
is capable of attracting working class votes,
Labour votes. On the face of it, UKIP is a rightwing party but one that effortlessly draws in
traditionally left-wing voters.
In Scotland, the outcome was a surprise
rather than a shock. From this distance, it
seemed as though Nicola Sturgeons Scottish Nationalist Party (SNP) would sweep to
a third successive victory, clearing the way
for another referendum on independence. A
No to the European Union in this months
referendum would provide the pretext for the
second Scottish referendum which is about
all that the SNP seem to stand for these days.
MAJORITY
Yet the SNP failed to secure an overall
majority in the Scottish Assembly and will be
obliged to rule in some sort of coalition. They
will nevertheless be by far the biggest party.
Beneath them, the old political landscape
has changed. Suddenly and almost from
nowhere the Scottish Tories have become

the opposition relegating Labour to third

place. Now that really is tectonic plate
movement if you like. For years, the Scottish
Labour movement has been at the heart not
only of Scotland but of the UK. Now it must
rebuild from scratch, in much the same way
as the Liberal Democrats had to start anew
after last years General Election.
More significantly, Labour needs Scottish
MPs, all 58 of them, to form a national government. At present they have one.
By way of explanation for the Scottish
Tories overnight success, it may be worth
pointing out that theirs is the only major party
north of the border which is unequivocally
against another referendum on Scottish
independence, and one is tempted to assume
that this made them attractive to all the No
voters in the 2014 referendum who won that
vote by ten percentage points.
YES / NO
But Nicola Sturgeon has now made it plain
that she intends to carry
on working towards
what she and Alec
Salmon described as a
once in a lifetime Yes/
No referendum. Those
of us south of the border
can only hope that the
loss of the SNP overall
majority will frustrate
that ambition.
In England there was
no substantial change
in the the main parties
fortunes. Jeremy Cor-

UKs Cameron Caught Calling Nigeria, Afghanistan Corrupt

PRIME MINISTER David Cameron was last
month caught on microphone saying that leaders of fantastically corrupt countries including
Nigeria and Afghanistan, were to attend an anticorruption summit in London just days later.
Cameron brought together politicians and
officials from around the world May 12 as part of
efforts to clamp down on bribery, money laundering and other forms of wrongdoing.
At the earlier Buckingham Palace reception,

a television microphone caught Cameron saying

we have got some leaders of some fantastically
corrupt countries coming to Britain.
He referred to Nigeria and Afghanistan
possibly two of the most corrupt countries in
the world.
Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari and
Afghan President Ashraf Ghani both elected in
2014 have promised to curb corruption in their
countries. Both attended the meeting in London.

SINCE 1991

byns enemies in his own party did not have

the disaster to justify mounting a leadership
coup. Still, to have made no progress eight
months after becoming leader and given the
fact that the opposition does well in elections
of this sort, it suggests that Corbyns days
are numbered. Maybe the mutiny when it
comes will be after the European referendum
this month.
Labours one bright light amid all the
gloom came in Sadiq Khan winning the
London mayoralty by a handsome margin.
The Tories had run a nasty campaign against
Khan, a Muslim, with all sorts of dark warnings about extremism. Anyone who can
remember the appalling parliamentary election for Smethwick in 1964 will have some
idea of what happened in London this May.
Happily, the nastiness appears to have helped
and not hindered Sadiq Khan.
DIVERSION
There remains a sense that this years
local government elections have been a diversion on the way towards the most important
UK vote for 40 years: the EU referendum
on June 23.
Listening to debates, phone-ins and
general discussions, one gets the feeling
that public sentiment is balanced on a knifeedge. Most of the big guns seem to be on the
Remain side but the reception given to Leave
campaigners, in TV debates for instance,
is noticeably strong. The word Id use is
raucous suggesting a sort of passionate
fervour for getting out of Europe.
It is this almost nasty atmosphere which
has characterised a number of recent political developments, like the rise of UKIP, the
partisan Scottish independence campaigners,
the strength of anti-migrant feelings, Cleggmania and Jeremy Corbyns overwhelming
support among grassroots members of the
Labour Party that renders him virtually bombproof. Even, maybe, Leicester City winning
footballs Premier League.
It is why politics has become so messy,
so unpredictable. I think it may have something to do with the exponential rise of social
media which cuts across reasoned debate
and allows strong feelings to ebb and flow
through our society in an almost anarchic
fashion.
This very strong populism will I think be
expressed in the EU referendum by a hefty
vote to leave.
I hope I am wrong.

EUROVISION SONG CONTEST

Controversy Surrounded
Ukraine Song Winner
TO DESCRIBE the Ukranian winner
of the Eurovision Song Contest as
controversial would be an understatement.
First, just weeks before the Contest last month, it was pointed out
that the song by Jamala was born
of a political message. Her song,
1944 lamented Stalins deportation
of more than 240,000 ethnic Tatars
from Ukraines Crimea region during
the Second World War.
But the Geneva-based Eurovision
organisers decided the song was not
in breach of the competitions rules
against political speech.
Then, following her win there was
a huge outcry that a video existed of
her previously performing the song
in 2013.
In the past, songs that had been
publicly available before the deadline, but had not been accessible by
a wide audience, had been granted
permission to compete in the Eurovision Song Contest by the Reference
Group.
PUBLICLY
In the case of Jamalas 1944 the
EBUs attention has been drawn,
after the 2016 Eurovision Song
Contest, to a public performance
of an earlier version of the song in
May 2015.
But, the singer who narrowly
beat Australia to take the title last
month with her song 1944 will
not be disqualified, despite a video
showing her performing the song in
2013, emerging, Eurovision bosses
have announced.
The decision was slammed by
some fans who claim the song should
have been disqualified and Australia
crowned the winners.
One wrote: So many people said
it was shown on TV, also the video in
youtube, before deleting, was viewed
from like 3000 people.
The rules are the rules for everyone but not for this winner? Why?

Liberty House Submits Bid

For Tata Steel Assets In UK
RR By Danica Kirka

TWO FIRMS have expressed interest in buying the available assets of

Tata Steel UK, setting up rival bids
that could help revive the troubled
industry in Britain.
Commodities trading firm Liberty
House said last month it has submitted a letter of intent to bid for Tata
Steels available assets in the UK,
including the massive Port Talbot
steel works in south Wales. A second
group planning a management buyout,
Excalibur Steel UK, has also registered a letter of intent.
Liberty said its bid uses a model
that will involve a transition of steelmaking in blast furnaces to recycling
steel in electric arc furnaces over
time. The company also said Cambridge University professor Julian
Allwood who has studied reducing
carbon emissions by making less new
materials has joined the team of
external advisers.
Steelmaking would be ultimately
powered by renewable energy
sources, the company said in a
statement. Liberty believes the UK
steel industry can achieve long-term
viability if based on an agile, sustainable, non-cyclical model.
The other bid is led by Stuart
Wilkie, chief executive of Excalibur
and previously the hub director of

Tata Steels Strip Products in the

UK He said their project has made
enormous advances in the two weeks
since making the decision to pursue
a buyout.
We believe we have a large number of the pieces in place required
to make this a success, including a
management team with vast experience of steel making and processing,
Wilkie said. We are confident we can
turn the business around and sustain
profitable steel-making in the United
Kingdom.
India-based Tata has said it is losing
1m ($1.4m) a day at Port Talbot amid
high costs and a glut of cheap Chinese
steel in global markets.
The government has said that it is
prepared to take a 25 percent stake
in any rescue of Tata, mindful of the
4,000 people who work at Port Talbot
alone.
Critics say the government should
reduce energy costs and cut business
taxes to help the steel industry. If it
cant find a buyer, some argue the government should nationalize the plants
to ensure Britain keeps producing the
steel needed by UK manufacturers.
Unions argue that the state pumped
more than 100bn into banks during
the financial crisis and that the steel
industry is also worth a helping hand
in a time of need.

Nationalized Royal Bank Of

Scotland Sees Loss Widen

ROYAL BANK of Scotland says its net loss widened in the first quarter as the
taxpayer-owned bank made its final 1.2bn ($1.7bn) payment to the UK Treasury as
part of a deal to give the government first crack at any profits.
The bank, which is 73 percent taxpayer-owned, last month reported a net loss of
968m, compared with 459m in the first quarter of 2015. Excluding the payment to
the government, RBS posted a profit of 225m.
Operating profit increased more than 10-fold to 421m as the bank cut operating
expenses and reduced restructuring costs.
Once the worlds largest bank, RBS was bailed out during the 2008 financial crisis
and has been posting annual losses ever since.

Tony Blair Says

Defeating IS Requires

FORMER British Prime Minister Tony

Blair says the Islamic State group will be
defeated only with a ground war involving Western troops.
Blair says air strikes alone will not
defeat the militants. He said last month
that you are going to have to go and
wage a proper ground war, with British
and American troops playing a supporting role.
Blairs decision to take Britain into the
US-led invasion of Iraq in 2003 remains
deeply divisive, and Iraq is mired in
violence. Blair is likely to be criticised
in a long-delayed report on the war and
its aftermath that will published in July.
At an event in London, Blair acknowledged the invading nations had underestimated the forces of destabilisation
that would emerge in Iraq after the toppling of dictator Saddam Hussein.

KEEPING UP WITH BRITAINS FAVOURITE SOAP OPERAS

THIS MONTH in Coronation Street, Gary has

been scoring drugs for Izzy from his mate
Dane. Izzy says that theyre the only thing that
helps her with pain relief, and Gary wants to
do all he can to help. But Sharif sees the drug
deal taking place in his gym, calls the cops
and Gary is arrested. Izzy begs the police to
release Gary and tells them he was getting
the drugs for her. This makes things worse
for poor Gary as the cops upgrade his charge
from possession to dealing.
Maria returns from Cyprus this month,
with gay husband Pablo in tow. Shes married
him so that Pablo can be with his boyfriend
in London. Its an arrangement that works
for Pablo and Maria but its one that Luke, as
you can imagine, isnt very keen on. Pablos
as camp as Christmas and so when he tells
David in the salon: My parents dont know
Im gay, David replies with: Have they not
met you?
Pat Phelan is shaping up to be one of
Coronation Streets best ever villains. This

month he breaks into the community centre

and smashes the place up, just so that he can
go in there to fix it up again. Hes hailed as a
hero, but Todds on his case, he knows theres
something fishy about Phelan after he sees
him hanging around outside the community
centre just minutes before the break in.
News reaches the Grimshaws that Jasons
dad Tony Stewart has died. Along with Todd
and Pat Phelan, Jason goes to his dads flat
to sort through his belongings. The flats in
disarray, as if Tony has just stepped outside
and left things as they were. Jason picks up
a bottle from the kitchen worktop. He loved
his brown sauce, he muses, tears in his
eyes. This was a wonderful bit of comedy
in another wise nasty, dark scene as Todd
tries to stop Phelan getting his claws into his
brother as he wallows in grief.
Billy the vicar is in a bad mood. Hes being
pestered with text messages from someone
he doesnt want to be pestered by. The
mystery texter then turns up in the shadows
on the street demanding money from Billy,
which he hands over in secret. The same lad
turns up again and Billy refuses him money
this time. Who is the mystery stranger and
why is Billy enraged?
And finally this month, Nick Tilsley
struggles to cope as the symptoms of his

brain injury return. Hes in pain and turmoil

and starts to lose his temper and fly into
rages over the simplest of things. He sees
his doctor who refers him to the hospital
consultant. Its not looking good for Nick and
he confides in David that he cant tell Carla
because it wouldnt be fair on her. Threatening to call off the wedding he tells David: If
I cant be proper husband, I cant marry her
at all. Oh dear.
Later in the Bistro, Carla waits for Nick to
come in for a quiet drink. Shes drinking red
wine and is surprised that Nick is having a
soft drink. She jokes with him about this and
turn soon talks to their upcoming wedding.
Till death us do part, she says to him to
which he replies, sadly: In sickness and in
health. Yeah, but were both as fit as fiddles
arent we? she smiles. Oh, if only she knew.
Later, in Carlas flat Nick goes out running for
the second time in the same day, as a way
to vent his frustrations. Run like the wind,
Carla tells him. Run to the top of a mountain
and pull me down a star. I was thinking of
five times around the Red Rec. Nick replies.
And its wonderful dialogue like this that
proves exactly why I love Coronation Street.

EVERY END is a new beginning. That is the

line the BBC used to publicize the storyline
that played out this month, a story that ended
an era, but first
Everyone in the Square is all up in Ians
grill; not sitting at a table at his restaurant grill.
No, thats going down the pan. But they are
upset because they found out hes selling out
to a big chain store that will kill the market.
Why would someone whos family has been
on the market for generations (even Ian) kill
the market? Its to save his son, secret serial
killer Bobby. Ian and Jane cannot afford the
tuition fees at Bobbys new, posh boarding
school, the school they think is keeping their
little psychopath on the straight and narrow.
To protest, all the market traders boycott the
Chippy and Cafe. But at the critical moment
when he has to sign the contracts, Ian
changes his mind. He cant sell. Now theyve
got to tell Bobby (whos home on break with
his hockey player of the month trophy yes,
of course he excels at an activity that includes
a blunt object) that he cannot return to the
school he loves. Hes going to be upset and
as we all know, if you upset Bobby, you end
up with blood splatter patterns in the darn
dest of places.
In retrospect, when Jane asked Bobby
what he wanted for tea and he answered,
Fava beans and a nice Chianti, she should
have known summink was up. Yes, he overheard Jane telling Sharon the news they were
going to have to break to him, so he packs
his bag and wants to head back to school,

assuming theyll let him stay even if his parents cant pay. Jane wont let him leave, but
Bobby says she cannot tell him what to do
because, You aint my muvver shades of
Kat & Zoe, but Zoe didnt do this: When Jane
turned her back to call Ian, Bobby bludgeoned
her with his hockey stick. Not once, but three
times. Thats gotta smart
Across the Square, theres a new stalker
in town. Hes a handsome, homeless construction worker hired to work on Jacks
reno project on #3 (Maxs old house), but
unbeknownst to Jack (and everyone else) he
has some kind of obsession with Ronnie. It
looks like he might have been the one stalking
her. And hes creepy and causing problems
for Stacey and Martin as well, but those
problems are set aside as Stacey and Martin
get married in a sweet and happy ceremony,
before heading back to the Vic for the reception, not knowing that their cake, still sitting
on Ian and Janes table is now splattered in

As Phil lurches from disaster to disaster,
unable to stay sober long enough to get on
the liver transplant list, Peggy turns up on
Ronnies doorstep. We knew her cancer
had come back, but now we find out it has
spread to her bones and brain, and she has
(essentially) come home to see everyone
for the last time, before she takes her own
life because she wants to take control over
the cancer and go out (she says), the way
she has lived, head held high, like a queen.
Both Phil and Grant (who flew in when Sharon
sent up the Bat Signal), try to convince her its
wrong, and take her pills away, not knowing
she has more. In the end, as she prepares
to go, she is hallucinating and sees Pat, who
reassures her that she wont leave her alone,
not for a minute. And with that she leaves
behind letters for Phil, Grant and Sam, puts
on her lippy and takes the bottle of pills.

Edition Of Vogue

THE BRITISH edition of Vogue will mark

its 100th anniversary with a rare portrait
of Kate Middleton looking relaxed in the

The Duchess

of Middleton
images shot by
photographer Josh Olins in its June edition and some will be placed in Britains

Kensington Palace said Kate hopes
that people appreciate the portraits with
the sense of relaxed fun with which they

The casual clothes and settings provide a counterpoint to the more formal
portraits commonly produced of senior
royal figures.

UKs Long-Delayed
Iraq War Report To Be
Published July 6
A LONG-DELAYED report on
Britains involvement in the
Iraq war will be published July
6, seven years after the inquiry
began, officials said last month.
The Iraq Inquiry said security
checking of the report by retired
civil servant John Chilcot has
been completed, without any
redactions being sought, and the
2.6 million-word document will
now be prepared for publication.
The inquiry into mistakes made
before and after the 2003 US-led
invasion of Iraq held public hearings between 2009 and 2011,
taking evidence from more than
150 witnesses, including former
Prime Minister Tony Blair, and
scouring 150,000 documents.
The inquiry has cost more than
10m ($14.4m), but its report has
been repeatedly delayed, in part
by a process that gives those who
are criticised a chance to respond.
Families of troops killed in
Iraq say the delays are prolonging their grief as they search for
answers about how Britain ended
up in the conflict.
Britains involvement in the
war in which 179 UK personnel died between 2003 and
2009 remains a divisive issue.
Blairs government made a case
for joining the invasion based on
what turned out to be false claims
about Saddam Husseins alleged
weapons of mass destruction, and
without a comprehensive plan for
postwar reconstruction.

Soaps Celebrated With New Book
THE FIRST book about Coronation
Street diva Carla Connor has been published.

experts, Glenda Young who is editor of
the acclaimed Coronation Street Blog

Since the character of Carla Connor
first appeared on the cobbles of Coronation Street in 2006, she has become one
of the most iconic, contemporary female
characters in the soap world.
This groundbreaking book takes a look
at one of the most electrifying life stories
in soap. There are details of Carla Connor
being held hostage in a siege; surviving a
fire; a bus crash; rape; suicide attempts;
alcoholism and gambling. The highs
and lows of the reign of a true queen of

the soaps is now in

print.
In a week that
one soap queen,
Peggy Mitchell,
leaves our screens
its great to celebrate such an
important milestone of another,
says Glenda Young.
Carla Connor has
become one of the strongest female
characters ever to appear in UK drama
and her tenth anniversary should get the
attention it so richly deserves.

THE QUEEN MARY celebrated the 80th anniversary of her maiden voyage May 27, 1936, and
still sailing in the right direction, thanks to some
awesome people. And YO think she nearly didnt
get built. Cunard ran out of money during the
depression in 1930. Known then only as boat
534, it lay idol rusting, putting 2,500 Glaswegian
craftsmen/shipbuilders on hold for two years until
the British Government stepped up.
Built on Clydebank in Glasgow, Scotland at
the John Brown Shipyard the toil, sweat, love
and soul of these men and women labored to
build possibly the finest ocean liner ever built,
certainly of its day. A floating palace, a stately
home on water.
Before Trans-Atlantic airplanes ships were
the only way to cross the Atlantic or voyage
around the world. Celebrity passengers are too
numerous to mention, to its most illustrious
passenger Winston Churchill. When WWII broke
out it became a troop ship transporting 800,000
GIs to the UK, in preparation for the Normandy
Invasion of Europe. Adolph Hitler put a bounty
of $250,000 on her, to any U-boat captain that
could sink her. Fortunately, the Germans couldnt
catch the Grey Ghost as she zigzagged across
the Atlantic. She was even in a collision with an
escort ship costing 388 lives and damaging its
stem (bow) considerably, but couldnt stop as
she was under orders never to be a target.

ESCAPING

One story I hadnt heard was with then Commander Irving, who held up the sailing from
Cherbourg, France for six hours to enable one

w w w. y e

Jewish family to arrive by train, escaping almost

certain death from the Nazis.
Fast forward to 1968 on its last voyage to
Long Beach, fortunately saving it from the scrap
heaps, it had a huge send off from Portsmouth
in the UK, and encountered a very rough passage across the Bay of Biscay. That was my
first encounter with the Queen Mary off the West
coast of Africa on the island of Las Palmas de
Gran Canaries.
I was somewhat of an adventurer, sailing a
50 ketch and come across the QM there, and
when we met up again in Barbados, she dwarfed
the entire island. I was invited onboard there and
again in Barbados. We sailed north up the East
coast to NYC, past the statue of Liberty, an experience you never forget on your first trip to America.
The QM sailed around the Horn to its final and
tumultuous welcome in Long Beach, California.
After many decades in her permanent home shes
still thriving! Did Long Beach make the QM or
did the QM make Long Beach from an industrial
harbor to the jumping waterside community that
it is today, full of restaurants, shops, hotels, with
a huge night life?
Celebrating the 80th birthday took an enormous
amount of imagination, cooperation and talent to
accomplish so much fun, history, and nostalgia. It
started with an idea from Dan McCue, PR for the
QM, who was given the go-ahead by marketing
director Chris Wilmoth and GM John Jenkins. He
went to the UK to meet up with the BBC to put
together a documentary on people that had sailed
on the QM: war veterans, British war brides, and
the crew. The documentary aired May 24 in the
UK to the highest ratings only to Coronation
Street. The sanitized version (less the sexy stories) will be shown in the US on the Smithsonian
Channel August 21 (we hope later on PBS). You
will laugh, you will cry, you will be proud of the
history of who we are: people of both nations.
Dan approached Randolph Churchill and Lord
Alan Watson (respected Churchill expert and
author, BBC Panorama) in London with the idea
to visit the QM to reflect on the some 60 million
people who have been personally touched by
the QM since the ship was first sailed.
On Wednesday May 25 when Karen and I

more about the guests that had actually sailed,
they could only describe their voyage as some
of the most lasting and memorable experiences
of their lives.

GALA DINNER

The Gala Dinner Thursday evening was absolutely spectacular, held in the main dining room
for first class passengers, just as it always has
been for 80 years. Commodore Everette Hoard
gave us all an insight into the history of the QM,
as hes spent the last 35 years of continued
service to the ship. Dinner was served as close
to the original menu as possible to perfection by
Chef Todd Henderson and his staff, all making an
appearance to the applause of everyone.
Guests had come from as far away as Tasmania, Australia, UK and Canada, just to be at this
grand event. Grandson Randolph Churchill gave
a very lively, visual and entertaining account of
his memories of Sir Winston. This was followed
by an equally enlightening speech by author and

historian Lord Alan Watson. Dan McCue gave

mention to the ships former passengers present
from the war brides: Annie Wichert, Sylvia Jean
Dahler, and June Allen, to crew a first class waiter
who had traveled with his wife and two children
from Tasmania, just to be part of history.
A full orchestra played all night and this was
followed by more dancing and socializing on the
Afterdeck, myself spending a couple of hours

Suit Against Foreign

Pensions Deducted From
Social Security

ATTORNEY Jonathan Bruce, JD, PhD,

recently contacted us at the Union Jack
regarding the Windfall Elimination Provision
(WEP), and what is seen as the unfair reduction of hard-earned pensions from another
country. We have long felt the law unfair and
feel this is a wonderful opportunity for those
effected, or soon-to-be, to join Mr Bruce
in his legal action to stop this reduction of
monies due that is impacting many Union
Jack readers.
Mr Bruce has enough Brits through UJ
already to launch a class action case, with
more still coming in. If you are having all or
part of your UK deducted from your US Social
Security this is something you may want to
be part of as the suit moved forward.
We now have six people who have
returned contracts to us for our class action
case, and this is enough. We anticipate filing soon. I am waiting to hear back from as
many as 14 others.
Mr Bruce told me last month, that he certainly would like to be in touch with everyone
interested in and concerned with the case. All

I JUST LEARNED of beloved Scottish

comedian Ronnie Corbetts March death
because it was not reported on US TV. He
may not have been known here, but Florida
was an ongoing part of his life, hence this
belated mention. Of course, this fine publication did lovely page one coverage in
last months issue. I interviewed Corbett
at the swish Boca Raton Resort where
he always stayed, under the British radar.
While in Florida he never gave interviews,
avoided all British pubs where his size and
voice would immediately have him spotted. So my articles on the March 1999
cover of this paper and full-page feature in
Americas glossy Mad Dogs and Englishmen national magazine, were exclusives.
They came about solely because I had become friends with his sister Maggie, who
lived here. I come over just to play golf,
my lifelong passion, and spend time with
Maggie. (His home with wife Anne was on
a golf course in Surrey).
One day in 1990 I was in Kinkos
where this Scottish lady heard my accent
so approached me to chat. Maggie never
mentioned her famous brother at all. She
lived near Lighthouse Point Yacht Club,
was married to Erik a Danish-American
dentist and a pre-eminent dental lecturer,
whose patient I later became. On my first
visit I admired a slew of silver-framed
photos on the grand piano. Spotting one
of Maggie with the unmistakable Ronnie Corbett I naturally assumed it was a
fan photo taken sometime. No hes my
brother, she said. What was remarkable
is she was so tall for a woman 5ft 11
and he so short for a man. But their soft
Scottish brogues and ways of expressing
themselves were uncannily identical. There
was no doubt they were siblings. We became good pals, spending hours chatting
about the expat life in Florida at her place

or mine over a properly brewed cup of

tea or a wee dram. Maggie, whod had
a show business career in the UK before
marriage moved her to Florida, told me
Ronnie and I have always been close. We
speak often on the phone and visit each
other often in UK or Florida. On Ronnies
next visit she entreated him to grant me an
interview, which he reluctantly acquiesced
to only because Patricia is your friend.
For the article photo, I posed him leaning
forward in a Iarge armchair, reprising the
famous raconteur solo spot from his hit
show the Two Ronnies. Alas, Maggie died
in December 2004, and I sat with Ronnie
and Anne at the Pompano Beach funeral,
as we remembered a beloved sister and
good friend. Now RIP Ronnie too. Thanks
for the millions of wee drams of laughter
you gave the British nation.

whom I identified to her. So this is a personal and professional loss to me. It was
only a small, basic place but was home to
the Arsenal Supporters Club and served
delicious home-made British pub grub. So
Miami now has no British pub. Im talking
about the real McCoy along the lines of Ye
Olde Kings Head in Santa Monica, patronized and recommended by the publisher of
this paper. A place where expat Brits and
Miamis stream of UK tourists can gather,
enjoy traditional English dishes and a pint
of Boddies, watch the footie and sink
gratefully into a home from home. This is
a residual grievance of mine. Downtown
Miami 2016 is busting at the seams with
every type of international bar/restaurant/

resplendent new city blocks rising around

watched it become a more global sophisticated metropolis in the last few years. Yet
no British pub. This city is crying out for
it, with a large resident British community,
a British Consulate, two British business
groups (BABC and FABB), a year-round
pipeline of business and leasure travelers
and David Beckhams stadium opening by
2018. Yet no British pub. Maybe the Leyton lad will be so stunned to find Miami
has no British pub, hell treat us to one.

Hiring me as local consultant, of course!

(FOOTNOTE: If I had $2m (Miami real estate is expensive!) Id bloody custom-build
it myself: After 25 years of writing News
of the Booze, doing direct business and
hosting 300+ events in successful/failed
pubs I know firsthand what works. The
premises would be: A gloriously traditional
place people prefer for an English pub,
with an oil painting of Her Majesty an unapologetic must on the wall, think Downton
Abbey with beer kegs tee hee, plus a menu
of beloved classic English dishes, as per
Langans Brasserie in London. Toad in the
Hole, Spotted Dick with Custard and Suetmade Steak n Kidney Pie would always
be on. The kettle would always boil to offer a real Cuppa. No low-class Karaoke. It
would be a destination appealing to British expatriates and American Anglophiles
alike. Americans love our pubs, done right.

My pub vision for Miami sparkles like a diamond in a dungeon. So dashing off now to
buy that Powerball ticket.
HAPPY, OH SO HAPPY, BIG 9-0
BIRTHDAY to Her Majesty who is celebrating all this month. Hmm, dont think a surprise party is an option.

MONARCH WINS TESCO VOUCHER

Queen Celebrates 90th Birthday Again

RR By Gregory Katz

DOES ONE person really need 900

horses to tell their life story?
Well, maybe if theyre 90 years old,
have reigned over Britain for decades
and really love horses.
For Queen Elizabeth II, its not just
a birthday, its a birthday season. And
the four-day, 900-horse, 1,500-human
extravaganza that began May 12 is a
spectacle marking the midpoint halfway
between her real birthday in April and
her official birthday, to be celebrated
nationally in early June.
The festival climaxed on the evening
of May 12 with a national televised show
attended by the queen and her husband
Prince Philip.
It took place at the same time as the
Royal Windsor Horse Show, on part of
the estate that includes Windsor Castle,
one of the queens favorite retreats.

This festival is designed with the

doubt the queen is dutiful fulfilling

thousands of official obligations since
1952 but little doubt that being around
horses is what she really enjoys.
Even on official foreign trips, she often
schedules a free morning or afternoon to
check out equine culture in the countries
shes visiting, sometimes confounding
schedulers by tarrying too long.
So organizers decreed: Let there be
horses aplenty. And let there be singers
and theater acts and dancers as well.
The evening performances were
eclectic in the extreme and possibly a
bit kitschy: Dancers and singers came
from all parts of the globe, including
Oman, Chile, New Zealand, Canada and
Azerbaijan. Military bands and 100 pipers
got their time onstage as well.
Organizers have built on the success
of a similar pageant held four years ago to
mark the queens Diamond Jubilee. But
that was small beer only 556 horses.
This time, they upped the number to 900,
10 for each of the queens years.
The Queen smiled broadly when her

Irish Prime Minister

Kenny Re-Elected
After 70-Day Deadlock
RR By Shawn Pogatchnik

IRISH PRIME Minister Enda Kenny

won narrow re-election May 6 on his
fourth try, ending 70 days of deadlock and
forging a novel but fragile minority government containing independent voices.
Kenny received 59 votes, with 49
against, in the 158-member parliament
by far the fewest ever received for a
winning premier in Ireland, a nation used
to coalition governments with stable
majorities. Speculation mounted on how
long this government might survive.
In his victory speech, Kenny appealed
to opposition lawmakers to work in partnership together to build a better Ireland.
It will be a real test of our democracy, of
our character and indeed of this house a
test I am convinced we will pass.
STRONGEST
Kenny had governed Ireland for the
past five years atop a two-party government sporting the strongest majority in Irish history. But voters were
angered by several years of austerity
that underpinned Irelands 2013 exit
from an international bailout and shifted
support to socialist protest parties and
maverick independents in the February
26 election.
Kennys centrist Fine Gael party,
though weakened, retained its top position in parliament. But its coalition ally
in the left-wing Labour Party was decimated, leaving Kenny without a viable
majority partner.
Now, Fine Gael will stay in government only with external support from
its age-old enemy, Fianna Fail.

Grief Is The Thing With Feathers

Takes Dylan Thomas Prize
WRITER Max Porter has won the Dylan
Thomas Prize for young literary talents
with his poetic look at loss, Grief is the
Thing With Feathers.
The London-based Porter was given
the 30,000 ($43,000) award last month
at a ceremony in Swansea, Wales.
Named for the late Welsh poet, the
prize is open to fiction by Englishlanguage writers aged 39 or under.
Thomas author of rambunctious, lyrical
works including Under Milk Wood was
39 when he died in 1953.

The winning book, Porters debut, is

a work of poetic fiction inspired partly
by the poems of Ted Hughes and partly
by the death of Porters father when he
was a child. It focuses on two young boys
devastated by the death of their mother,
and their familys journey to healing with
the help of Crow, a mysterious trickster
figure.
Cultural historian Dai Smith, who
chaired the judging panel, said the book
transforms the ordinary through an
extraordinary feat of imaginative prose.

Church Of Scotland Votes To

Allow Gay Marriage For Clergy
THE CHURCH of Scotland has voted to let its ministers enter same-sex
marriages though saying it maintains its traditional view of marriage
between a man and woman.
At its general assembly, meeting in Edinburgh, voted last month to
allow congregations to opt out from traditional teaching if they wish
to appoint a minister or a deacon in a same-sex marriage.
However, Church of Scotland clergy will not be allowed to conduct
same-sex weddings. A debate on whether to sanction gay marriages
within the church wont be held until the churchs Theological Forum
presents a report next year.
Gay marriage has been a divisive issue for religious groups around the
world. Scotlands official church is a Presbyterian denomination with
about 400,000 members.

Prince Harry, Michelle Obama

Help Kick Off Invictus Games
RR By Terrance Harris

PRINCE HARRY and first lady Michelle

Obama helped kick off the Invictus
Games for wounded veterans with uplifting speeches May 8, joining other figures
from the worlds of sports, entertainment and politics in a glittery opening
ceremony.
The two-hour event in Orlando,
Florida, included performances by British singer James Blunt and soprano Laura
Wright. Actor Morgan Freeman and
former president George W. Bush honorary chairman of this years games sat
in the audience for the ceremonial start of
the games at Disneys ESPN Wide World
of Sports Champion Stadium.
Nearly 500 athletes from 14 different countries are competing in the
Paralympic-style sports competition over
a four-day period beginning Monday.
INSPIRATION
The Invictus Games are the creation
of Prince Harry, who got the inspiration to help wounded and sick military
personnel and their families after his
two tours of duty in Afghanistan. The
initial Invictus Games were held last
year in London.

I cant tell you how proud I am to

have the second Invictus Games open
in America, Prince Harry said. Im a
long way from London tonight, but when
I look out, I see so many familiar faces,
servicemen and women, their friends and
their families and all of the people who
got them here. I feel like Im at home.
The evening began with participants
dressed in their nations colors marching
into Champion Stadium to a standing ovation from the crowd. There were several
musical performances and then three
veterans spoke about the injuries they
suffered and their fight to regain control
of their lives.
SACRIFICES
I served along soldiers from all over
the world, Prince Harry said. I saw the
sacrifices you and your families made to
serve your nations. I learned about the
importance of team work and camaraderie in the way that only military service
can teach you.
There was a military flyover and the
black and yellow I Am flag, which has
become the symbol of the Invictus Games,
was flown by helicopter into the stadium.
There was also a fireworks show.

Constance
By Rosie Thomas

CONSTANCE THORNE is trying to figure

out who she is and where she came from.
She was a foundling left in the bushes in
a basket as a baby with only a single earring
clipped to the basket.
A family adopted and raised her shortly
after she was found. The Thornes already
have a girl so Connine has an older
sister Jeanette
who is deaf.
Connie always
felt the second.
All of the attention
was showered on
Jeanette thereby
causing constant
friction between
the two. Connie
threw herself into music. The old house
her parents moved into had an old piano
that came with it and Connie was eventually
allowed to take lessons. She had quite the
talent and, after a bitter fight with Jeanette,
she decided she needed to get a job and get
her own place. She walked into an ad agency
and just jumped in, convincing them they
needed her. With her first weeks paycheck
she rented a small flat and never looked back.
Connie did well for herself and bought a flat
in London. She met Sebastian, a conductor,
and they lived together and traveled for over
six years. Then Seb told her he was in love
with the violinist and was going to marry
her. Although Connie never thought Seb was
madly in love with her, the breakup was still
tough on her, so she traveled around and
ended up settling in Bali. She was able to do
her work from there and she loved the peace
and quiet. The people were friendly and she
even got involved in a little local music group.
One afternoon as she sits in her home in
Bali she gets an email from Jeanette its
been years since theyve spoken to each
other Jeanette is dying, she has cancer
and wants to make amends with Connie.
Connie immediately writes back and tells
her shell be there as quick as she can. The
thoughts start swirling around the fights
they had growing up, Connies affair with
Jeanettes husband which caused the
chasm between them, what would happen
now? Would they make things up? The last
time they had spoken was after their mother
passed away and they were sorting out the
old house. Their father, whom Jeanette had
been very close to, had passed many years
earlier. They had a huge row just after Connie
had found the basket she had been left in, and
the earring that was attached to it. She wasnt
aware it even existed until now. Why was it
hidden for so many years? Maybe now she
could find out who her Mum was. Connie had
fled, never to speak to Jeanette until now.
We also meet Noah Jeanettes grown
son. Noah is very close to his Mum and isnt
ready to accept the fact that she is dying. He
never really knew his Aunt Connie. Noah has
just left a visit with his Mum and is walking blindly through the crowds near Tower
Bridge. He stops to contemplate for a while
and sees a lovely girl interacting with one of
the human robots trying to make it move.
Thinking shes a tourist he tells her she wont
be able to make it move. She tells him she
lives here in London. He is immediately smitten and asks her if shed like to have a drink.
She agrees and they find a place nearby.
Noah is fascinated by Roxanas accent (shes
from Uzbekistan) and there is a sense of

mystery about her too. They have one drink

and she has to rush off to work. He gives her
his number, she wont give him hers. And so
it begins
Connie arrives back in London a few days
later and once settled back in her flat rings
her sister. Jeanettes husband Bill answers
the phone and her heart tugs as soon as she
hears his voice. There hasnt been anything
between them for years, theyve left it aside,
many words unsaid, because of Jeanette.
Bill says she should come right away so she
does. Things are strained between Bill and
Connie but they make it work. Connie and
Jeanette are both surprised at what they each
have to say to each other and how important
they are to each other as there are certain
things that only the two of them remember
and can share. The days pass and Jeanette
tries to go back to work but is too weak. Bill
tries to help Connie sort out who she is, they
visit the adoption center but the law doesnt
allow for any information to be passed along.
There is a family barbeque and Noah and
Roxana come. All is good. Everyone gets
along and its a wonderful day. Connie is
telling Jeanette all about Bali, Jeanette is
fascinated. Connie asks if she and Bill would
like to visit, if she feels strong enough. Bill
says yes, of course, they can. The three of
them fly to Bali and have a very wonderful
visit. They attend a Balinese funeral which is
a spectacular occasion, everyone welcomes
Jeanette and she feels like she learns much
more about life and the universe.
Just before they left for Bali Connie invites
Roxana to share her flat - Roxana has had to
move out of her little room as she has been
robbed. Roxana really wants to be somebody
she lost her brother in the Middle East
conflict and is trying ever-so-hard to make
her own way in life. She is a stripper in a club
with a jerk for a boss. She accepts Connies
kind offer and also finds herself another job
for the same ad agency as Connie. She
is very organized and helps them with their
negotiations for a shoot in Russia. Noah has
fallen head over heels but Roxana remains
somewhat distant.
While in Bali Connies apartment is robbed
and Roxana is shattered, she feels responsible. Once again, her trust in people has let
her down. She then hears that her brother is
not actually dead but in prison she must
return home as soon as she can.
Shortly after Jeanette and Bill return to
London Jeanette passes. Connie makes it
back for the funeral and to straighten out the
robbery situation. She sees Bill at the funeral
of course and it is painful as she cannot comfort him, nor he her. As soon as the funeral
is over she returns to Bali and, once again,
throws herself back into her work, she travels
for a year before returning to London even
visiting Roxana in Uzbekistan. Once she is
back she calls Bill to see how he is getting
along. They decide to meet for dinner. It feels
so comfortable to be with each other again.
Can they pick up where they left off so many
years ago? What would Jeanette think?
Its a wonderfully written story about love,
loss, finding oneself and learning that we
cant always have what wed like. Sometimes
tough decisions have to be made. Kind of like
real life
I look forward to reading Rosie Thomass

Laws Brought Into Force

A HIGH COURT Judge last month dismissed challenges by four of the worlds
biggest tobacco firms, Philip Morris
International, British American Tobacco,
Imperial Tobacco and Japan Tobacco International, and upheld unform packaging rules
be enforced in the UK from May 20.
Mr Justice Green, who heard the case
in December, gave a 386-page, 1,000-paragraph written ruling.
In it he said: The essence of the case is
about whether it is lawful for states to prevent the tobacco industry from continuing to
make profits by using their trade marks and
other rights to further what the World Health
Organisation describes as a health crisis of
epidemic proportions and which imposes an
immense clean-up cost on the public purse.
Included with other rulings, was that
all tobacco packaging in the UK must be
uniformly olive green and with large images
as health warnings; and a separate EU law
also being introduced seeing packs of 10
cigarettes being banned
The government said it meant a generation would grow up smoke-free. Two of
the companies have said they will appeal
against the ruling.

UK-US TAX INFORMATION

How It Looks From The UK

I WAS asked by a reader (not my mother!)

to write a column on Brexit and the possible
effects for those of us receiving income from
the UK. This seemed to tie in well with the
fact that Im currently visiting the UK and
could get more idea of how the referendum
was being dealt with on the side of the pond
where it will be decided.
I wouldnt pretend that my friends and
family are representative of anything other
than being my friends and family, but Ive
been surrpised to find not a single person
supporting the Leave campaign. Everyone
claims not to be affected by the fear tactics
being used on the Remain side, but it must
be difficult to be totally unmoved by the
suggestion that June 24 will be the start of
unmitigated doom and gloom if the Leave
side has a majority. But, based on my very
small sample, that is unlikely to happen.
Making political comments is always
sailing into tricky waters, but here goes! I
was never very Europe-minded whilst I was
living in the UK, but it now has an inevitability
about it, based on geography alone. Living
as we now do in a big country, its difficult to
see the advantage in purposefully choosing
to operate as a small one. But the EU wasnt
well set up to resolve problems, and the idea
of influencing from within is not a strategy
with guaranteed success. I think Im glad not
to have a vote for this one!
Weve already seen the decline in the
sterling-dollar exchange rate over the past
six months, and this would no doubt take
another dive if the vote was in favour of leaving the EU. It would then probably improve,
but slowly. Add to this, of course, the US
political uncertainties that wont be resolved
until November, and I think the summer of
2016 is more likely to see Americans visiting
the UK (where they will have to face many
questions about the US election!) than Brtiish
people visiting the US.

account well before the time of voting. Any
investors and investment companies who
want to reduce their exposure to UK holdings will have already sold. But many UK
companies now have income from a variety
of countries, both in Europe and outside, so
there are many factors determining financial
security other than where a head office is
based. The corollary to which, of course,
is that companies with trading income from
mainly UK sources could be more vulnerable
if there is a Leave vote.
The exchange rate is currently not where
we, as expatriates, would like it to be (but
is very good for people taking dollars into
the UK). With that in mind, I would only be
bringing money into the US from the UK at
the moment, if I really had to!
On a totally different topic, anyone who
needs to file a Foreign Bank Account Report
for 2015, must file it online before the end of
June. This is the last year with this deadline;
next year it will be tied in with tax return dates
and it will be possible to get an extension to
mid-October.
If a professional files the form for you,
they will ask you to sign an authorization
form numbered 114a. This should also be
completed if you file on behalf of anyone else,
so if one person from a married couple files
on behalf of both of them for accounts held
jointly, the other person should give them
authority to do this. The authorization form
doesnt get filed anywhere, but since the
whole point of doing this is to be compliant
with the US rules, it makes some sense to go
along with this bit as well. The US government
will never run out of demands they put on us!

Manchester United Win At

Wembley
AN EVEN ended game of soccer was played
at Wembley at the FA Cup final, May 21,
where Manchester United and Crystal
Palace hosted a full house of partisan fans.
A clean affair erupted, before an urgency
overtook both sets of players as the game
went in to extra time at one goal apiece.
Suddenly, Uniteds Chris Smalling was redcarded and the match appeared to shift in
Palaces direction, but then Jesse Lingard,
who has not scored in the last 22 game,
found his shooting boots from just outside the
area five minutes from the whistle that would
give Louis Van Gaals squad a 2-1 victory
and their twelfth FA Cup. Jason Puncheon
put Palace ahead in the 78th minute, but while
the celebration was still in progress amongst
the London fans, Juan Mata levelled the
score after just three minutes. Barely had the
celebrations begun, when the news slipped
out that Jose Mourinho, would likely replace
Louis van Gaal, as the coach for next season.

Mark Selby Is The New World

Snooker Champion

Ding Junhai became the first Asian player

to reach the finals of the World Snooker
Championship at the Crucible Theatre, Sheffield, April 16-May 2, but a nervous start saw
him lose the first six frames against Mark
Selby the 2014 world champion. Junhai
fought back to get within reach of the Leicester player, but the loss of those early games
took its toll, as Selby collected his second
World championship winning 18-14. Junhai
had beaten Alan McManus in the semi-finals
17-11, while Selby overcame Marco Fu
17-15. Five-time world champion and hot
favourite, Ronnie OSullivan, was ousted in
the second round by Barry Hawkins.

Tennis: Djokovic Beats Murray

Andy Murray reached the final of the

Spanish Open in Madrid, April 29-May 8,
where old nemesis Novak Djokovic was waiting for him. Murray, the defending champion,
has a miserable record against the Serb in
recent encounters and so it proved again
as Djokovic, took advantage of the Scots
slow start to win 6-3, 3-6, 6-3. Murray
did get revenge for his Monte Carlo loss to
Rafael Nadal, beating the Spaniard 7-5,6-4
in the semi-finals. Earlier Murray dispatched
the Czechs, Radek Stepanek and Tomas
Berdych, and also the Frenchman, Gilles
Simon. On the womens side, Laura Robson
is still struggling for form and fitness after a
17 month lay-off and was beaten by Victoria
Azarenko of Belarus, who went injured in the
next round. Heather Watson and Johanna
Konta made early exits too. The day after
the final, Murray announced that he was
splitting with his coach of two years, Amelie
Mauresmo. The Scot has won seven titles
during his time with the French-coach, but
their relationship became complicated when
she gave birth to a child six months ago.

Murray Beats Djokovic

A week later at the Italian Open final in

Rome, May 15, the pair clashed again and
with Djokovic winning 12 of their last 13
encounters things looked tense. But Murray dug deep and produced the goods with
a 6-3, 6-3, victory over his Serbian rival
who showed his irritation by complaining
about everything. Murray celebrated his
29th birthday the same day, and becomes
the first Brit to win this event since 1931.
The Scot had previously eliminated Mikhail
Kukushkin of Kazakhstan, Jeremy Chardy
of France, David Goffin of Belgium, and in
the semis Lucas Pouille of France. On the
womens side, Johanna Konta, beat Johanna
Larsson (Swed) and Roberta Davinci (Ita)
before falling to Japans Misaki Doi in the
third round. Heather Watson overcame the
world number 14, Sara Errani, but lost in
the following round to the Czech, Barbara
Strycova. Serena Williams won her first
WTA crown in nine months beating fellow
American Madison Keys,7-6 (7-5), 6-3, in
the womens final.

Rugby: The Saracens Are

European Champions

The two big European Rugby Union finals

played at Lyon, May 13-14, witnessed
the Saracens, the reigning English champions, become the European Champions
after beating Parisian Racing 92, 21-9 in
the Champions Cup final. Played during a
heavy thunderstorm, the Saracens became
the first team ever to win every game of
the Championship series. Its the very first
European Championship for the Saracens,
who reached the finals two years ago only
to be beaten 23-6 by Toulon. The European
Challenge Cup Final, played the day before,
saw Montpelier Heratt take the honours
with a 26-19, victory over the Harlequins

Horse-Racing: Nyquist Fails

Second Leg Of The Triple Crown

A near record 167,000 plus attended

Churchill Downs for the 142nd running of the
Kentucky Derby, May 7, which is also the first
leg of the triple crown. The unbeaten Nyquist
(2-1f) collected his eighth consecutive victory after winning the ten-furlong distance
by a length and a quarter. Ridden by Mario
Gutierrez, trained by Doug ONeil, and owned
by J Paul Reddam, Nyquist pulled clear on
the final bend. Having won the Breeders
Cup Juvenile and recently the Florida Derby
at Gulfstream Park, the horse was heavily
favoured. Its a second Derby win for ONeil
and Reddam, having won this race in 2012,
with Have Another. Exaggerator (6-1) was
second, Gun Runner (8-1) third. 20 ran
Nyquist lost its unbeaten record and a crack
of being a triple-crown champion, when it
was beaten into third place by Exaggerator
in the Preakness Stakes, May 21, where rain
turned the one mile three/sixteen track in to
a sea of mud. The second leg of the triplecrown was trained by Keith Desormeaux
and ridden by his brother Kent. Exaggerator
(5-2) finished three and half lengths in front
of Cherrywine (17-1). 11 ran. Nyquist (3-5f)
had beaten Exaggerator four times previously.

Boxing: Canelo Catches Khan

Amir Khan jumped from lightweight to

middleweight in his catch weight contest

against Saul Canelo Alvarez (48-1) in
Las Vegas, May 7, for the Mexicans WBC
middleweight crown. The Bolton pugilist
kept moving in the first four rounds, dancing
around Canelo, jabbing, scoring points, but
the heavier man caught Khan (31-4) with
a vicious punch in the sixth round and the
encounter was over. Both men weighed in
at 155lbs, but Alvarez was bigger when he
entered the ring. Words like courageous and
brave acclaimed Khan, who was surely aware
fighting a man two weights above his own
natural fighting weight, had its perils. Same
weekend, Anthony Crolla, retained his WBA
Lightweight crown at the Manchester Arena in
front of a home crowd when he put the previously unbeaten Venezuelan, Ismael Barroso
(19-1), on the canvas in the seventh round.
Barroso started fiercely and Crolla (31-4-3)

Haye (28-2) continued his return to the
ring after a two year hiatus, with a second
round knockout of Swiss-Kosovoan Arnold
Gjergjaj, at the O2 Arena, London, May 21.
The Hayemaker had the unbeaten Gjergjaj
(29-1) down three times before it was over.

Formula One & Cycling

Nico Rosberg, claimed his fifth consecutive Formula One victory at the Russian Grand
Prix at Sochi, May 1, putting him way ahead
on the drivers points table. Mercedes teammate Lewis Hamilton, started tenth on the
grid, but managed a second place finish with
Kimi Raikkonen third. It was calamity for
both of them at the Spanish Grand Prix, May
15, where Rosbergs run of victories ended.
Rosberg and his British World champion
teammate Hamilton, collided during the first
lap, finishing up on the grass and out of the
race. Max Verstappen of Red Bull, became
the youngest winner ever of a Grand Prix
event at just 18-years-old. Kimi Raikkonen
was second with Sebastian Vettel third.
Kirsten Wild won the Tour of Yorkshire,
April 29-May 1, which is a one-day cycling
road race for the women and three-day race
for the men. She finished ahead of Lucy

Sponsors & Prince Harry Come

Out For The Invictus Games

The second Invictus Games at Orlando,

Florida, May 8-12, witnessed Michele
Obama, Prince Harry, Morgan Freeman and
James Blunt, open the Paralympic sporting
occasion that drew a plethora of big company sponsors and celebrities. The Invictus
Games saw previously injured, active duty
servicemen and women in various stages of
rehabilitation compete against one another.
500 competitors from 14 countries competed
in archery, swimming, cycling, track &
field, rowing, beside wheelchair volleyball,
basketball, rugby, tennis and power-lifting.
American, Elizebeth Marks, captured four
gold medals, but presented one of them to
Prince Harry, to be forwarded to the Papsworth Hospital, who were responsible for
her care last year. Aussie Mark Urquhart,
won three gold medals. ESPN devoted 55
hours of air-time to the event. Prince Harry
was present for the closing ceremony where
Country group Rascal Flatts, former American Idol winner Phillip Phillips, and rappers
Flo-Rida, entertained.

their loser medals in the dressing room.
Celtic claimed their fifth consecutive Scottish Premier Championship and celebrated
during the final match of the season with a
7-0 thrashing of Motherwell at Parkhead. The
Hoops will have a new coach next season,
after announcing that Brendan Rodgers
(formerly Liverpool coach) will take over
from Ronny Deila.

The semi-final legs of the Champions

League, April 26-May 4, witnessed two brilliant saves by Joe Hart that kept Manchester
City in contention at the Etihad Stadium. Real
Madrid were without the injured Cristiano
Ronaldo, and a strategy of few chances
unfolded where strong marking by both sides
held the game in stalemate for a goal-less
encounter. The second leg at the Bernabeu,
May 4, produced strong tackling and man to
man marking that did not endear the match
to being a soccer spectacular. Welsh international Gareth Bale, fired off an acute angle
shot that was deflected into the City net by
Fernando, in the twentieth minute. The 1-0
score line puts Real Madrid through.
In the other semi-final, Atletico Madrid
beat Bayern Munich on the away goals
rule, winning 1-0 at home, and losing 2-1
in Germany.
Liverpool were woefully unlucky in their
first Europa League Cup semi-final leg in
Spain, April 28, when Adrien Lopez, scored
with just one minute left of injury time to
give Villarreal a 1-0 advantage. Liverpool
had potentially held the Spaniards with some
excellent football, and Jurgen Klopps squad
must have thought they done at least enough
for a draw. A raucous Anfield crowd got
behind the team for the second leg, May 5,
and it was big smiles all round as Liverpool
conquered 3-0. Bruno Soriano, deflected a
Roberto Firmino, cross in to his own net in
the 7th minute, and Daniel Sturridge, made it
two in the 63rd minute. Villarreals Victor Ruiz,
was sent off in the 71st minute, and Adam
Lallana clinched a Liverpool place in the
final with a goal nine minutes from the end.
The other semi-final witnessed Sevilla
beat Shaktar Donetsk 5-3 on aggregate,
drawing 2-2, away, but winning the home
leg 3-1.

The approaching 2016 Euro-Championships and the Copa America competition had
both England and the USA, seeking to ready
their squads for the big games ahead with a
series of friendlies. England welcomed Turkey at the Etihad Stadium, Manchester, May
22. A lively encounter took place with England
winning 2-1, and ending Turkeys streak of
13 undefeated international matches. Harry
Kane broke through in the third minute, but
eleven minutes later the Turks equalized
through Calhanoglu. Leicester City striker
Jamie Vardy, hit the winner for England,
seven minutes from timeAt the Stadium
of Light, Sunderland, May 22, England came
away 2-1 winners over Australia, scoring
all goals in the process. Marcus Rashford,
got one in the third minute, then substitute
Wayne Rooney, added to his record England
tally with a netting in the 55th minute. Eric
Dier headed an England own goal in the 75th
minute Same evening at Windsor Park,
Northern Ireland stretched their unbeaten
run to 11 matches, after a 3-0 win against
Belarus. Lyle Lafferty, Conor Washington
and Will Grigg, were the marksmen.

European Soccer

Liverpool Lose It In The Second

Half, Sevilla Claims Final Glory

UEFA were severely criticized for letting

the St Jakob Stadium in Basel, Switzerland,
host the Europa League Cup final, May 18. A
capacity of only 35,000 meant tickets were
at a premium and Liverpools allocation was
just over 10,000. Coach Jurgen Klopp, has
resurrected Liverpool pride at Anfield, but
his accomplishments did not materialize to
a European success as Sevilla captured the
trophy for the third consecutive year beating
Klopps squad 3-1. Liverpool started in a
bundle of energy which was reward with a
Daniel Sturridge goal in the 35th minute, and
they should have been awarded a penalty for
hand-ball too. Sevilla, returned in the second
half a changed side as Kevin Gameiro,
equalized just after the break. Liverpools first
half performance slipped as the Spaniards
grew increasingly confident, and a brace
by Sevillas skipper Andujar Coke, in the
64th and 70th minutes left Liverpool gasping.
That positive fight back against Borussia
Dortmund from being 3-1 down to 4-3 up,
did not occur here, as the red-shirted heroes
of the kop failed to reverse a second half
Spanish display.

Hibernian Wins Scottish Cup

It was 1902, when Hibernian last won

the Scottish Cup, but May 21, at Hampden
Park, that long run of disappointment ended
with a 3-2 victory over Rangers. It was the
first Scottish Cup final that featured two clubs
outside of the top tier of Scottish football.
Anthony Stokes ignited the encounter in the
third minute as Hibs went ahead. Rangers
replied with Kenny Miller (27th minute) and
Andy Halliday (64th) and pushed the advantage for the Glasgow side. Then Anthony
Stokes, came back in the 80th minute for a

Three Wins For The USA

The US squad visited Puerto Rico, May 22,

ranked 157 in the world by FIFA. It was their
very first encounter and on a very dry pitch
in high afternoon humidity the US won 3-1.
Tim Ream got the first in the 20th minute and
Bobby Wood put Klinsmanns men 2-0 up.
Puerto Rico got one three minutes prior to the

penalty shootout. Real Madrid went ahead
in the 15th minute, while Carrasco put the
game at 1-1 in the 79th minute. The game
went to extra-time, but still no goals, until the
penalty phase gave Real Madrid the title in this
all-Spanish final Same weekend, saw Hull
City return to the Premier League after beating
Sheffield Wednesday at Wembley, 1-0 in the
championship play-off final.

Andy Murray struggled through two five

setters to progress in the French Open, May
22-June 5, beating Radek Stepanek (Czech)
and Matthias Bourgue (Fr), then prevailing
against Ivo Karlic of Croatia, in straight sets
for a place in the fourth round and the last
sixteen. The red clay of the Roland Garros
Stadium did not favour the other British
competitors however. Johanna Konta and
Naomi Broady went out in the first round.
Heather Watson got by the American, Nicole
Gibbs, but was well beaten by the Russian,
Svetlana Kunetsova, in the next round. Kyle
Edmunds reached the second round, before
the American, John Isner, ousted the Briton
in straight sets. British number two, Aljaz

third round.

Mourinho Takes On Inevitable

Big Job At Old Trafford
RR By Steve Douglas

MANCHESTER United needed a serial

winner to restore the teams status as
a European powerhouse. Jose Mourinho
craved an iconic stage like Old Trafford
to remind the world of his rare talent
as a coach.
Its been inevitable for some time that
Englands most prestigious club would come
calling for soccers most successful current
manager, and confirmation arrived Friday.
United announced the long-awaited hiring
of Mourinho on a three-year deal, ushering
in an exciting era not just for a club that has
slumped as a domestic force since Alex Fergusons retirement in 2013 but for the soap

Big Crowds Watch Leicester

Parade EPL Trophy
AN ESTIMATED 240,000 people turned
out to watch Leicesters players parade
the Premier League trophy in an opentop bus tour through the streets of the
city in central England May 16.
Leicester captain Wes Morgan said
looking out, you feel very proud seeing
all the people, flags, everyone enjoying
themselves, and it shows what we have
achieved this season.
Leicester started the season as a
5,000-1 longshot to win the title, having
only narrowly avoided relegation at the
end of the 2014-15 campaign.
Leicester manager Claudio Ranieri
said its unbelievable. All the city is
here.
Hours later, Ranieri was named manager of the year by the English League
Managers Association, only the second
non-Briton to earn the award. Arsene
Wenger was the first, in 2002 and 2004.

ing into retirement. He has also coached

Ajax, Barcelona, Bayern Munich and the
Netherlands in a stellar coaching career.
On Mourhino United executive vice chairman Ed Woodward said: Jose is quite simply
the best manager in the game today. United
are thought to be paying Portuguese coach
a reported annual salary of 12m ($17.5m).
The stats might just back it up: Mourinho,
53, is a two-time Champions League winner,
with FC Porto and Inter Milan. He has won
eight league titles since 2002 across four
countries (Portugal, England, Italy and Spain),
three of them coming in the Premier League
with Chelsea.
For all his faults, he is as close as it gets in
soccer to being a guaranteed trophy winner.
And, these days, that is all United wants.

Marcus Rashford Earns An England Spot At Euro 2016

RR By Rob Harris

THREE MONTHS ago, Marcus Rashford

hadnt even played a senior game in professional soccer. Now, the 18-year-old
Manchester United forward is going to the
European Championship for England.
By including Rashford in his 23-man
squad May 31, England coach Roy Hodgson
countered critics who accuse him of being a
conservative coach. He cant be accused of
just going with the safe choices any more.
When England qualified for the Euros in
September, Rashford was still in the United
academy. He was only plucked from the
youth ranks in February as a last resort during an injury crisis by now departed manager
Louis van Gaal.
GOALS
Two goals were scored on his debut in a

It was no fluke. Three days later came another

No Alzheimers Says Frank

Worthington

FRANK WORTHINGTON, the former England

striker last month denied that he has been
diagnosed with Alzheimers disease.
He issued a statement a day after his
daughter claimed he had the condition.
Worthington, 67, explained: I have never
been diagnosed with Alzheimers disease or
any other neurological disorder or illness.
I do have some issues with short term
memory impairment but I have been assured
this is not particularly unusual for a man of
my age.
Worthington had a playing career spanning 26 years that included more than 200
appearances for Leicester.
Earlier, his daughter Kim-Malou Worthington wrote on Facebook: He was diagnosed
several years ago and has been holding it off
with positive thinking and football.
The Football Association wants world
governing body FIFA to investigate whether

Celtic Wins 5th Straight

Scottish League Title

CELTIC WON its fifth straight Scottish league

title by beating Aberdeen 3-2 last month,
clinching the trophy with two games to spare
and earning departing coach Ronny Delia
another piece of silverware.
The Glasgow club needed just a draw to
wrap up a 47th top-flight championship, leaving it seven behind cross-town rival Rangers
world-record haul of domestic league titles.
The Old Firm league rivalry between
Celtic and Rangers will resume next season,
with Rangers back in the Scottish Premiership after being demoted to the lowest rung
of the countrys league pyramid in 2012
because of financial problems.
Celtic went 3-0 ahead thanks to a double
from on-loan forward Patrick Roberts and
another by Mikael Lustig. Second-place
Aberdeen, the only team capable of overhauling Celtic, pulled two goals back in the
second half.

Agbonlahor Quits As Captain

Of Relegated Aston Villa

GABBY AGBONLAHOR has quit as Aston

Villa captain and apologiSed for his off-field
conduct.
The forward was pictured in a newspaper
with what look like nitrous oxide or laughing
gas canisters on the same night that Aston
Villas relegation was confirmed after losing
to Manchester United last month.
Villa announced that Agbonlahors sus-

two in a win over Arsenal.

At that time, Hodgson was downplaying
talk of Rashford forcing his way into England
contention in time for Euro 2016. It seemed
too fanciful.
Soon the case became just too tempting,
with Rashford hard to resist as an unpredictable fresh burst of dynamism in the squad.
By the time the season ended, Rashford
was an FA Cup winner and had scored eight
goals in 17 appearances for United. He also
made Englands initial 26-man provisional
squad.
YOUNGEST
Rashford is also off the mark in international soccer, taking less than three minutes
of his debut last week to find the net. At 18
years and 208 days, Rashford became the
youngest player to score in his debut for
England when he volleyed in the opener in a
2-1 win over Australia in a friendly.

It was enough to convince Hodgson

to take him to France among five forward
options alongside captain Wayne Rooney,
Harry Kane, Daniel Sturridge and Jamie
Vardy. Winger Andros Townsend and midfielder Danny Drinkwater were cut, along with
the injured Fabian Delph.
England is in Group B at Euro 2016 with
Russia, Wales, and Slovakia. The tournament
runs from June 10-July 10.

pension from the club had been lifted, while

he has been fined.
Agbonlahor wrote on his Instagram
account: I am stepping down as club captain
with immediate effect, as I do not deserve to
carry out such a role anymore ... it hurts to
have lost it.
Agbonlahor is Villas longest serving current player and their record English Premier
League goal-scorer, having netted 73 times
since his debut in 2006.

Pochettinos backroom team has also

agreed to contract extensions.

16-Year-Old Debutant Scores

With 1st Touch For Celtic

A 16-YEAR-OLD player marked his debut for

Celtic by scoring with his first touch, wrapping up a 7-0 win over Motherwell that helped
the champions win the Scottish Premiership
by a 15-point margin.
Jack Aitchison became the youngest-ever
Celtic player when he entered as a 75thminute substitute, and scored two minutes
later. He was one of seven different scorers
at Parkhead as Celtic celebrated the end of
the season in style.
Celtic, which had long clinched its fifth
straight league title, finished the season with
86 points. Second-place Aberdeen had 71
after losing 4-0 at home to Ross County.

Roberto Martinez Leaves Everton

EVERTON said manager Roberto Martinez

has left the Premier League club after the
teams disappointing run of results at the
end of the season.
It is the first big move by Everton since
billionaire Farhad Moshiri bought a stake in
the club in February to become its majority
shareholder.
Martinez has failed to get the best out of
what is widely regarded as strongest Everton
squad for years, and pressure from fans has
intensified with the team winning only one of
its last 10 matches in all competitions.
The 42-year-old Martinez has three years
left on his contract.

Pochettino Extends Deal With

Tottenham Through 2021

MAURICIO Pochettino was rewarded last

month for turning Tottenham into a genuine
Premier League title contender by earning a
new contract at the club through 2021.
Under the Argentine coach, Tottenham has
become one of the most entertaining, highscoring and hard-working teams in England,
and was the biggest challenger to Leicester
in the league this season.
Weve seen Mauricio bring a tremendous
spirit and ethos to our club and embrace the
attacking style of play with which we have
always been associated, Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy said. Hes built a squad of
youth and experience and this season weve
seen football played at the highest level
quite sublime at times.

Aston Villa Sold To Chinese

Buyer Recon Group

ASTON VILLA was sold last month to a

Chinese businessman after a decade under
the American ownership of Randy Lerner.
The sale to Tony Jiantong Xias Recon

relegation from the Premier League after
placing last.
No details of the deal were available. The
takeover is subject to approval by English

One of Xias immediate priorities is

Lerner said Xia is committed to investing

English Premier League title triumph has
signed a new deal with the club.
Steve Walsh, Leicesters head of recruitment, has unearthed unheralded players
like Riyad Mahrez, Jamie Vardy, and NGolo
Kante since joining the teams backroom
staff in November 2011. They were among
the key players in Leicesters improbable title
victory this season.
Walsh, and assistant manager Craig
Shakespeare, signed new deals last month
reportedly through 2018.
Leicester manager Claudio Ranieri says,
When I arrived at Leicester, I could never
have expected to find a group of staff so
well-equipped to take a club forward. Craig
and Steve have been very important to this.

Watford Appoints Mazzarri To

Replace Sanchez Flores

PREMIER League team Watford has appointed

Walter Mazzarri as its new head coach on a
three-year contract, starting July 1.
The 54-year-old Italian, whose previous
clubs include Inter Milan, Sampdoria and
Napoli, replaces Quique Sanchez Flores,
who departed after what the Spaniard called
a conflict of views over the clubs achievements in his first year in charge.
Watford was promoted from the secondtier League Championship last season and
secured its survival in the lucrative Premier
League with ease finishing 13th with 45
points and reached the semifinals of the
FA Cup, losing to Crystal Palace.

Welsh Tactics For New

Zealand

TROPHY EARNED NOT BOUGHT

Warren Gatland has deliberately avoided

blooding youngsters for the summer tour in
New Zealand. There were strong contenders, among them Sam Davies, the Ospreys
flyhalf, who is described as Jonny Wilkinson
with pace. Gatland believes there is too much
risk involved in New Zealand for players at the
start of international careers.
However, there is just the chance that
Leigh Halfpenny may get a call for the tour.
He had a second knee operation in April and
his Toulon coach Bernard Laporte hopes to
have him back shortly. Halfpenny would miss
the first two tests against the All Blacks but he
might just scrape into the final one.
Sam Warburton has recovered from
injury and will lead Wales on their tour to
New Zealand.

Englands Australian Tour

FORMER Australian captain James Horwill

didnt make the national side for the World
Cup last year but is still involved at the top
level with London Harlequins. He is struck
by how well new English coach Eddie Jones
has affected the team but still predicts the
Wallabies will be too strong and backs them
to inflict a 3-0 whitewash.
You never quite know what will happen to
Danny Cipriani, the playboy English flyhalf
whose career has been marred by carelessness and celebrity. He is still only 27
and not quite off the scene as Eddie Jones
has called him into the long squad for the
Australian tour.
England prop, Joe Marler, has been seeing
a sports psychologist in recent weeks. He
received a belated two-match ban for calling
Welsh prop Samson Lee a Gypsy boy in
the heat of the England/Wales encounter in
March. On his return he picked up another
two-week ban for kicking Grenoble hooker
Arnaud Heguy in the head during Harlequins
Challenge Cup match in April. Marler, with
42 caps to his name, said he must get a grip
on his behaviour following the second ban.
Another England player in need of much
the same advice following his own two-match
ban for dangerous play is flyhalf Owen Farrell. He was cited for a dangerous tackle on
scrumhalf Dan Robson in Saracens Champions Cup semi-final against Wasps. Still only
24 and with a glittering career beckoning,
Farrell is a bit too rough and ready to inflict
damage on opponents. Commitment is one
thing rugby players always need but there is
a sporting side to the game and it is terrible to
see professionalism spoiling the great game.

Scotlands Ten Day Tour In

Japan

Scotland have selected a tight squad

for the games against Japan this month
according to Vern Cotter, the Scottish coach.
They will play their first-ever internationals
on Japanese soil and the experience should
stand them in good stead with the next World
Cup in 2019 taking place there. He has
allowed himself the luxury of picking a small
squad for what should be an entertaining
couple of matches.

Leicester Deserve
Improbable Title
RR By Rob Harris

A GROWING number of broken

beer bottles crunched beneath
their feet as thousands of
Leicester supporters continued singing past midnight on
the citys High Street May 8.

Champions of England, the chant went,

we know what we are.
Few around the world will not know. Singing it perhaps reminds Leicester fans that the
past year is real and not some improbable
sporting fantasy.
It was little surprise that Leicester Royal
Infirmary reported twice the usual number of
patients being admitted during the Saturday
night revelry, mostly for minor injuries or
alcohol-related incidents.
People were urged to avoid seeking medical attention unless it was urgent. If you dont
need to come to A&E please dont.
ESTABLISHED
It was Leicesters seventh day as one of
the unlikeliest champions of England since
the countrys leagues were established in
the 19th century.
The solid silver Premier League trophy,
topped by a golden crown, was presented
the previous evening to the Leicester players
after they overwhelmed Everton in a 3-1 win
with a display that showed they are taking the
final two games of the campaign seriously.
Its unbelievable youve seen the team
spirit that weve got, said top-scorer Jamie
Vardy, whose double in the game took his
tally to 24 for the season. It is a scandal
how we all are together. We literally are like
brothers.
When training and matches are finished,
well all go out and have food together, were
always in touch with each other. That just
shows how much as a unit we all are as a
team and it shows in our performances week
in, week out.
ACCEPTS
But even Leicester manager Claudio
Ranieri publicly accepts that this season
could well be a one-off high-point for the
team, which lost three league games all
season after starting as 5,000-1 longshots
and relegation candidates.
Rival managers are wondering if underdogs winning the league will become the
new norm.
Maybe a team that nobody expects now
will come next season and surprise everyone, Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger said.
In a few years the potential in England will
be much more shared than everywhere else
and you can get more surprises.
One Manchester United fan turned up at
Leicester for the Everton game with a poster
saying: A trophy earned not bought.
Wenger, though, points out that Leicesters owners Thai retail group King Power
are wealthy. Its just that Leicester hasnt
spent heavily on players.
Lets not forget Leicester are not poor,
Wenger said. But theyve done extremely
well with less resources and their efficiency
level between money spent and results are
by far the best in Europe, and you have to
give them credit for that.
