Objectives

Learning Targets:
Students will be able to interact and collaborate with peers in order to communicate
research findings.
Students will be able to use a variety of technologies to communicate information.
Students will be able to participate in a shared project.
Students will be able to gather information to answer questions.
Students will be able to understand that the internet provides a means of
communicating with others.

Needed
Materials

Student computers with internet access to appropriate search engines, weebly

website, BrainPopJr website w/ username and password provided by teacher, adobe,
Non-Fiction books on animals from library, printer, pencils, clipboards

Procedures

Students will first be introduced to the objectives/learning targets.

Background Knowledge will be activated by reviewing the SEARCH
framework (see on weebly page-in parentheses a description is available for
each letter to relate to first grade language). My students will already have
the appropriate knowledge required to identify important questions, locate
information, critically evaluate information, and to synthesize information.
Students will recall information from Animal Groups from their Journeys
Reading Textbook regarding a Polar Bear. As a class we would have already
completed a K-W-L chart regarding polar bears, adding information from a
search that was completed by the teacher, then by the students. Throughout
this process the teacher guided students through searches, activing prior
knowledge of specific search skills (referring to the SEARCH framework).
I do: The teacher will then show students how to use the program google
docs in order for students to collaborate and share their findings.
We do: One Group will help the teacher model how google docs work.
You do: Students will then (in their previously assigned groups) will take
their completed research on their animals from using technologies as well as
print sources and add to the google docs. Students will be able to use google
docs to share their findings or use the graphic organizer through adobe.
Students will then watch a BrainPopJR video referencing Blogging. Students
will learn about blogs and how they work.
I do: The teacher will show students how to access and post on the blog.
We do: Using the Smart Board and Projector students will be asked to guide
each other through a post on the blog. As a class we will take the Blog Quiz
on BrainPopJr.
You do: Students will be given access to the Weebly Blog page where they
will share information about their animals they researched previously as well
as cite their information.
Before the research project is completed students will be assessed by
emailing (using their student email account) their teacher one fact they
learned about their animal.
I do: Students will be asked what they know about email and if they have
ever sent an email before. They will be encouraged to think as if they were
writing a letter with paper.
Students will engage in watching the BrainPopJR video on email.
We do: Students will work in their groups to send an email to Moby under
the write about it activity on BrainPopJR. Students will be asked to share
their email aloud to the class. We will have a discussion regarding emails.
Questions would consist of:
o What is an email?
o What happens when you send an email?
o Scenarios about needing to give/send a message.
o How can I send an email?

Assessment(s)

You do: Using their personal student account, students will send their
teacher information they learned about their specific animal. The teacher will
respond to their email.

Participation using anecdotal notes

Students will also show that they can participate in a shared research project
by posting and responding to a blog.
Students will be given an exit slip to end the lesson. Their exit slips require
them to communicate with the teacher something they learned through email.
