5.
Learning targets of the lesson
I can introduce the topic of my informative piece.
I can write facts about the topic.
I can write a closing.
I can experiment with different keyword searches and compare their results.
I can refine my search by using multiple words, synonyms, and alternative words and

phrases.
I can draw inferences to explain my search results.

6.
Procedures of the assignment (Steps)
Ask (5-10 minutes): What are keywords? What do we know about keywords and
searching for information? What is a search engine? What is informative writing?

Students should be able to tell that keywords are words that you use to locate information
to help answer questions. They should also be able to tell that the more precise, direct,
etc. you are with the keywords and the more you use, you can narrow your search to try
to get only the information you are seeking. I am looking for a response that a search
engine is a website that searches for information using keywords. Students already know

informative writing is writing that tells information about a topic.

Watch (3-5 minutes): I will advise students that we will watch a video about searching on

the internet. I will ask students to tell me one thing they learned from the video.
Game (5 minutes): Students will work with me to play the game by selecting the
strongest keywords that would be specific, exact, succinct, direct, distinct, and concise
to answer a question. There is a small video at the beginning that shows a kid searching
for information. Students can relate. I will do the first one to model, kids will help me do

the second one, and the students will do the last one without my help.
Discuss (15 minutes): I will discuss with the students that we will be working on an
informative writing piece and we will use the internet and a search engine to look up
keywords to find true facts about our topic. We will work to complete a KWL chart using
the smart board to project it. I will advise students that we will write what we know about
birds, but not just birds- a Flamingo. I will write what I know about them. I will advise
students to write questions under the What I want to know column. I will write a
couple down. I will then ask students for a couple of questions they want to ask. I will
advise the What I learned column is completed after the answers are located during the
search. I will go to one of the websites KidzSearch or AskKids using the smart
board. I will remind students to be safe when using sites and searching (safe search). I
will start with a search of bird and note the number of results. I will then type in
Flamingo and note the results. I will take one of the questions and select the strong words

that are specific, etc. I will note the results and select the result I think will answer my
question. I will do a talk aloud to explain the reasoning. I will write the answer to my
question on the KWL chart under the What I learned section. I will then have the
students help me with a second questions. They will help select the strong words to use
in the search. I will then choose another questions and have the students work in pairs
and do the same thing. They will note the results and we will discuss the more specific
you are (more than one specific word), the better the results. We will share aloud our

words and results. The answers will be documented on the KWL chart.
Assessment (5 minutes): Students will then answer the question on linoit.com

individually about their knowledge of keywords.

Research (30-40 minutes): Students will be use their own KWL chart and select an
animal they want to research. They will not be allowed to select everyday animals such as
dog or cat. They also cant select the Flamingo. They will complete the first two sections
of the KWL chart. I will walk around to check progress. I will then walk them through
the steps of selecting the site they want to use. I will have them choose a question from
their KWL. They will select strong keywords to search. They will note results and
continue to use keywords to answer their questions. When they locate the answer to their

question, they will document it on their KWL chart under the learned section.
Exit Slip Assessment (5-7 minutes): Students will document their name, animal chosen,

one question, keywords used, and answer to the question on the Lino it site.
Informative Organizer (15-20 minutes): The information from the KWL (learned column)
will be used to complete the Informative Organizer. The organizer will then be used in
another lesson to complete an Informative writing piece that I will model prior to having
the students complete theirs using the same process.
7.

How students will be assessed:

Formative Assessment- Students will complete an Assessment question and Exit slip on

the Lionit.com website.

Summative Assessment- Finished product later on a completed informative writing piece.

8.

Accommodations and modifications for students: Students that struggle with

reading the exit slip, can have their partner read the question prior to answering. This is
better for auditory students or struggling readers. Students will also provide only 1 fact.
This helps those that struggle with typing. This will help reduce behavior issues as
students wont feel overwhelmed. Students will also work with a partner during the
activity to aide in peer tutoring. A Graphic organizer is provided to assist with tracking
information. Students that need a hard copy of documents to write, can choose it.
