Areas I could improve

-Working faster. This is a problem left over from lower school of taking things
at a time and much assistance from teachers. Must improve it to meet the
demands of upper school in Years 11-12.
-Stronger resiliency to prevent relapses from failures stopping my way of
achieving. I am very critical of myself that perfectionism gets way into my goal
setting whenever a task is too daunting to deal with.
-Coping with stress and anxiety, always maintaining a positive outlook no
matter what the task given or the circumstances.
- Distractions whether from Macbook or phones inhibiting my learning.
-Getting an average 8 hours sleep or more so Im more focussed for

What might get in the way?

Plenty of distractions like computers, video

games, music and noise outside of my room.
Additionally, my part-time job in the weekend may
slow down my commitment, which means part of
my energy and concentration is spent on my job
and relatively little on my schoolwork. Another
worrying problem I have to mind is my
increasingly demotivated attitude. The weight of
stress, need to succeed and thinking about my
future has placed too much burdens on my mind
that I spend more time actually worrying than
actually studying.

Family and work commitments, since this kind

of activity is more done on leisure time, no doubt
I will be forced to take priorities. Plus, the
reluctance of even taking the idea of job
explorations as way too matured for me at this
stage. I felt that I still lack the necessary
knowledge and skills on how to start on career
building in the first place.

undergraduate and postgraduate if I

Why is this important to you?

Surveying is the most practical, interesting and

increasingly demanded in Australia. In addition,
Surveying is a highly specialised field; working with
high-tech equipment like cameras, laser scanning,
satellite imagery or even computer modelling,
which interests me. Surveying also has a high rate
of employability, as students are able to find jobs
within 4 months of their graduation. After feeling
dissatisfied
with
environmental
science,
conservation biology and genetics as they dont fit
with the kind of career Im looking for, Im settling
for Surveying on the basis of practicality and
extensive outside work rather than cooped inside in
offices or laboratories.

What do I need to do to get there?

Like in social commitments, maturity

plays a big part to signalling my
independence and about time to really
find my role in how I may contribute to
society. In addition, our parents would be
counting on my brother and I to take part
into securing our future to repay their
efforts. A passion for science and social
issues to contribute to research I
considered It highly important for me. I
consider myself an active member of the
community, trying to contribute for the
greater good.

First, I do a Bachelors Degree in

surveying for 3-4 years in Curtin
University Part-Time and secure my first
job as a Surveyor in Government or
private sectors. After saving enough
money and garnering sufficient work
experience, Ill go back and pick a

and networks. I would then use my

contacts to gain employment in WA Dept.
Of Lands as Surveyor to work in some of
the State projects like mining or estate
property development.

What might get in the way?

Anxiety has been a biggest fear on my part; I will

often lack self-esteem of trying to do things
affecting my productivity and the extent I can
handle challenges. Worries present an obstacle as
well, projects that needed a long-term time for
completion conflicts with work that needs to be
done immediately. Plus, with the overwhelmingly
amount of work from many subjects as if dumping
every piece of work that cannot be completed inclass. Priorities in studies can only concentrate on
those tasks that are more important than others. So
time is lost for other subjects that may need
improving upon.

Having already completed my Bachelors

Geospatial Science in Curtin University,
obstructions that could block me in my
employment is competition from other
graduates trying to take my place in

Australias

Surveyor. Another problem that could
hinder my employment is the industry
projections and labour forecast on
Surveying. For example, a recession in
Surveying labour could mean a
decreased

for
employment,
significantly reducing my employment
chances in Surveying.

Who can help me to achieve my goal?

Being already at University, I would have to rely in

mutual cooperation with other Surveying students
that would help me study and answer my questions
while I help them in return. Other sources of help I
could ask the University Lecturer and other

Affirmations
I believe this plan is realistic and suitable for me because:

The goals short-term and long term Ive addressed is now more practical and addresses appropriately the situation in terms of my finances, education and
skills.

My career options reflect changed circumstances, as Im no longer considering Journalism or Religious Ministry as possible careers. Instead, Im
considering Genetics/Biotechnology, Surveying or Environmental Science as feasible vocations. For practical reasons, Im choosing Curtin University to
study at since its close to my home and I save transport costs instead of going to UWA or Murdoch Uni. By learning Genetics/Biotechnology, I can have
the advantage of knowing water resource management or environmental assessment impact, all integral information in Environmental Science. Since the
courses are compatible with each other, I can do Environmental Science as a double degree to complement my knowledge in Molecular Genetics.

Besides Genetics, I consider also Surveying - covering mapping, land development and hydrography all units useful in studying Environmental Science.
Both courses have limited requirements of needing standard English knowledge level met and expected level of Math attained, which is around within my
level of skill and knowledge. Since all three are STEM fields, I expect many employment opportunities possible as part of Australias radical Ideas Boom
economy. Other short term and long-term goals like saving money, taking responsibility and career networking helps me to make a smooth transition from
learning to work over the years. It will help me to form the necessary mindset and attitude to cope with the challenges of advancing careers and managing
work-life balance.

Parent suggestions and encouragement for my plan:

Mainly what they want for me is really a good education that I perform to the peak of my ability. This entails that I do not need to get A grades from all
across subjects but what I can do to my best. Another word of advice they have provided is the critical factor within the time frame, mainly that the goal I
have established is well within the grasp of time that can be achieved. My parents also mentioned of the gradual progress in learning and developing
skills, that I start from the bottom to progress my way to the top through diligence and talents. It doesnt have to mean of always starting from the lowest
level, but at the level of ability that I am comfortable with to begin progress upon. The final last piece of advice is that of learning. They have told me to
value the worth of learning of knowledge and skills in-school or out-school. At all opportunities, seek the occasion to learn and apply the knowledge learnt
to know you have known it. For them, time management, doing your best, development progression and learning makes up a crucial portion of my career
development if I am ever successful in finding a job.

My parents advised me to take a pragmatic and practical approach in my career development. They advised me to take courses that assure employment
instead of wasting years of learning that cannot promise to earn money. A good portion of my career life would therefore be spent in helping them as I
could just switch careers midway in my life once Ive managed their financial difficulties.

Teacher suggestions and encouragement for my plan:

Mr. White, Head of Mathematics Department:

Stick to at least studying Mathematics 2C/2D or Mathematics Applications as the minimum requirement of mathematical knowledge and skill required for
Surveying. In Curtin, there are 5 subjects that you must do that are necessary to do while a 6th subject is free of your own choosing. I recommend picking
a Math subject to complement your study of Surveying by improving and maintain your Math knowledge to the level required by the course.

Ms. Jo-Hanson, Former Yr. 12 Biology Teacher:

Because Molecular Genetics/Biotechnology has no essential requirements, it is best to study as well as you can on subjects you already have: Biology
and English. Additionally, you can take the initiative to self-study by purchasing textbooks or books covering topics of Biotechnology, Genetics or
Molecular Biology to give you additional skills and knowledge you can use to bridge your skill gap if you want to study this course.

Ms. Murray, Maths Applications Teacher:

As long as you meet the minimum requirements, you are well fine into studying Surveying Course. If you wish to study Surveying at Curtin University, I
recommend visiting the University during August where they hold their open days where you can talk to other people and inquire additional information
about Surveying if you wish to study it in University.
