BUNSCOIL FUN!

SCIATH NA SCOL 2016

The Sciath na Scol camogie team
started in the middle of April.
Our first match was against
Rushbrooke, but sadly we lost.
Our second match was against
Carrigtwohill, and we won. Our
third match was against Riverstown, we won that match too.
Our fourth was against Ballyvolane, we also won that. Then we
played against Ballincollig and won.
Then Youghal, Ballincollig and
Rushbrooke were tied in second
place, so we had to have a blitz.
Rushbrooke beat Ballincollig and
we beat both teams, so we were
through to the final. In the final,
we played against Riverstown in
Pirc U Rinn, but sadly we didnt
win. The score was 6-5 to 1-1,
scored by Avril Cashman. We
were disappointed we lost, but at
least we got to the final. Good
luck to the girls next year, hopefully theyll get to the final again
and win!

A FEW WORDS FROM MR. ONEILL

Summer is finally here and the good weather reminds us that the end of the school
year is close at hand. Where has this school
year gone? The year has really flown. Yearend standardised tests are being carried
out and corrected. It will soon be time to
fill in the report cards! It has been a busy
few weeks at the school with the boys and
girls taking part in Sciath na Scol matches
and the girls winning through to the final of
their division. They came up against a very
strong team from Riverstown in Pirc U
Rinn on Monday last and we were delighted
with them. Their great team spirit and
never say die attitude was amazing. The
boys nearly made it through but were
pipped at the post. Many thanks to all the
teachers that helped both the girls and the
boys, Ms. Llewellyn, Ms. Carroll, Ms. Bennett and Mr. White and Mr. Hickey. We
also took part and brought back many medals and trophies from the cross-country
running competition in Conna. We also had
great success at the Cork City Sports held
in the CIT grounds again this year. This
year the girls stole the limelight with one
of our athletes finishing 4th in the County
finals and another getting to the semi-final.
There was even more success in the relays.
Well done to all of the team and we are all
so proud of them. We really appreciate how
easily minded and well behaved they are
when they represent the school at off campus events. Thanks to Ms. Carroll,
Ms.Bennett , Ms. Hickey, Ms. Collins, Mr.
McCarthy and Mr. Walsh for helping. It is
great to see the children looking so well in
the singlets we purchased for them last
year. Well done to fifth class and Mr.
White on the fantastic video on Mental
Health that they shot earlier on this year.
There has been great feedback from other
schools and agencies regarding this video.

It is a very brave and topical theme with

emphasis on wellbeing and mindfulness being hot topics at the moment. Maith sibh!
The video has really given us all a boost and
brought great credit to the school.

Bunscoil Mhuire also entered a competition

run by the great band Seo Linn. They make
Irish language versions of pop songs and
they also write their own music and songs.
The Irish Roar, one of their songs, has
been chosen as the official anthem for the
Irish Soccer team as they head to Paris
and the Euros! Bunscoil Mhuire made a video of one of their songs The Music Makers and alongside the usual suspects, Mrs.
Mulcahy and the school choir, Mr. White,
Ms. Hannon, Ms. Edmonds, Ms. Conway,
Ms.Nagleeveryone in the school was involved. We won and the prize was workshops and a concert given by the band! Well
that happened last Wednesday and it was a
great success. The school was buzzing! The
six members of the band were very appreciative of the welcome they received and
they were genuinely impressed by our version of their song. The concert was a great
event and the whole town of Youghal could
hear the singing and the music! First Holy
Communion and Confirmation were a huge
success this year. The singing of our own
choir and the children in general were absolutely out of this world. Many thanks also to
the Holy Family Church choir under the
baton of Mrs. Mulcahy. Both events highlighted the talent of the teachers and the
children at our school and the brilliant behaviour of our pupils when representing the
school. We have our Sports Day coming up
on the 15th of June. Hopefully the brilliant
weather will hold and be kind to us. Many
thanks to Ms. Leamy for organising it again.
On the 22nd of June we have our Gradua-

tion Mass for our present sixth class pupils.

We wish them a great evening and we send
them all our best wishes for a very successful transition to secondary school.
Many thanks to Ms. Edmonds, Ms. Conway
and Melanie for all their hard work and
care throughout the year. As numbers are a
little lower this coming year in Junior Infants we hope to redeploy a teacher to
sixth class next September so that there
will be three sixth classes, we also hope to
continue with Maths streaming for fifth
class and I will be helping there. Best of
luck to Ms. Butler on upcoming maternity
leave and a big welcome back to Ms. OBrien
and Ms. Hickey who are coming back from
their maternity leaves. I would like to take
this opportunity to thank the following
staff members who were on temporary
contracts and who were filling maternity
leave contracts with us: Ms. Hannon, Mr.
Walsh, Ms. Collins, Ms. Bennett and Mr.
McCarthy. A big thank you to all the SNAs
who provided care to our children this year
and for the extra-curricular activities
throughout the year. I want to thank Halina, Tim and Tom for all of their hard
work. The friendliness shown by them adds
hugely to our school atmosphere. We are
grateful for the excellent condition they
have the school in. A massive thank you
also to Carmel for her dedication and hard
work in the office. Her efficiency and attention to detail is second to none. I wish
to thank all the parents and especially all of
those on the Parents Association. Their
help and support with raising funds for the
school and running of cookery classes is
greatly appreciated. Also a big thank you
to the Board of Management for their dedication and hard work. Maith sibh ar fad!

PARENTS ASSOCIATION NEWS

As another school year draws to a close the

parents association would like to offer a sincere thanks to all the
parents , children, staff, the towns people
and businesses who have helped us in so many
ways in the past year. The most recent school
event which we help out in is the sports day
and this year we would like to make a special
thank you to Hilary Crowley of Crowley's
garage who has for many years donated
the bottled water and ice creams. This very
generous gift is a lovely treat for the kids
and is very much appreciated by all so thank
you Hilary .The cheque for our fund raising

activities for the year was also presented at

the sports day and this year we were delighted to have raised 2900 which has been put
towards upgrading the school broadband network. Along with our usual participation in the
witches walk, our annual cake sale, First Holy
Communion, Grandparents Day and Graduation
Mass we would like to highlight our newest
initiative the school uniform bank. The collection of good condition uniforms and track
suits for resale will take place in the school
yard by the lift on Friday June 24th at both
9am and 2.45pm and again on Monday June
26th.The sale of the clothes will be

on Thursday July 7th from 4-6.30pm. The

cost per item will range from 1-10 with any
unwanted clothes donated to the local
SVP. As always new members are always
needed and welcomed as are any ideas you
may have to the newly added suggestion box
located in the school yard. Congratulations to
the newly graduated sixth class students and
thank you the all the teachers and staff for
all the hard work and many accomplishments you have achieved through out the
year. Fingers crossed the fine weather continues and everyone has a safe and happy
summer.

SOCCER TRAINING WITH MR. CONOR ROCHE

Anthony Kelly comes in to do soccer training with us every week.
First we do a warm up, then we go
into drills. After that we play a
soccer match for half an hour. For
the drills we pass the ball and
dribble. I love playing the matches.
I scored three goals in the last
one. We won three two! I scored
all the three goals.I actually did!!

I won a free for the first one because I was fouled. For the second
one Steven kicked it out and got a
touch and then I kicked it into the
bottom corner. For the third goal
Brian Kampire passed the ball to
me and I megsed to Panos and then
I scored the goal. Anthony is a
good trainer. I know Anthony. We
would all like to thank Anthony for

his very hard work.

OUR SPELLING BEE CHAMP...PANOS!!

As I woke up on the morning of

the Spelling Bee I was full of excitement. I raced downstairs and
got my dictionary and started
reading like mad. I got dressed in
my school uniform and left. As we
were going up in the car I was
reading spellings out of my dictionary. When we got there I was
buzzing with excitement. I got out

of the car and I immediately

started taking selfies beside the
Rochestown Hotel. When we got
inside we were sent to a massive
room two floors up. I received a
yellow t-shirt with Spelling Bee
written on it. Finally when the
competition started I was unbelievably excited. There were about
six participants. As the Spelling

Bee went on slowly people got

knocked out. I was knocked out on
the fourth out of seven rounds. I
was on the last B completion. In
the end it was a great day.

MY HOPES FOR THE FUTURE

When I grow up I want to get a fun and

exciting job that Ill enjoy. If I get a job I
hope to get it in one of these four fields
Medical, Business, Military or Aviation. I
would love to live in a fine house with lots
antiques and paintings. I would love to own a
Lamborghini and a Ferrari and a small helicopter, maybe a private jet too. I would
love to live in a mountainside town. I really
hope that I can go to the US before 2019
so I can go visit my cousin there and live
with him. I really hope I get full marks for
my Leaving and Junior Cert so I might get a
chance to go to Oxford University. One
hope I have is to fly a helicopter, a jet
fighter and an A80-800. I want to go on
holiday to Florida and New Jersey. I want
to make a model Spitfire and learn to drive.
I want to make new friends, have a family
or become a priest. I want to live for over
101 years. I want to enjoy my life and have

fun at everything I do. I want to become

more generous when I grow up. All of the
things I said are a long way in the future
except the Spitfire model making and being
more generous, but for now Ill just think
about the present.

By Jeiden Siby (Ms. Edmonds Sixth

Class)
My hopes for the future are to become a
soccer player for Barcelona. I hope to have
a family and have mansions in Ireland, Spain
and England. I hope to win many cups with
Barcelona, PSG, Manchester City and the
Irish national team and be top scorer in all
tournaments. Another job I want to be is
an actor after I get over my fear of being
on stage. Ill buy five more mansions in Co.
Cork Co. Kerry, Co. Dublin, London and Madrid. I hope to get enough money for the
newest cars and fashions. Then after a few

years I will retire buy a hotel and call it

Seaside Resort. I hope the hotel becomes
very successful and I become rich, sell my
mansions and buy a private island to live on
with my family unharmed then hire lots of
bodyguards. Then Ill build a bridge to New
York so my children can go to school. I hope
to live my life to the fullest.

FUN AT THE ANIMATION WORKSHOP

Sixth class had an animation

workshop in school. The people came and showed us a
short film and it was really
good. After that we had to
go into groups of five people.
In my group there was Jack
Keane, Eoghan Long, Conor
Savage, Leon Kenneally and
Wisdom. They had costumes
for us if we did not have
them. They bought their own
laptops and we got to use
them as well. We made a lot

of stuff like one of them was

eating weird food like tape,
bottles, sheets and hats,
etc. Then we had a ten minute break and when break
was over they had all of the
animation on all the laptops.
We got to go and edit it all.
One of them was putting
words into the animation. We
cant wait to see it all on
film. Last year they had the
film they made up on
YouTube and we got to see it

before we started making

our own.

and Daddies came too. Tim and
Cecilia had bought light-up balloons for us and we had lots of
fun playing with them. There
were toys to play with too and
chocolate buttons to eat. A

great morning was had by all.

MY HOPES FOR THE FUTURE

I hope to enjoy the last few weeks in Bunscoil

Mhuire. I also hope that I have a great summer
and can play outside with my friends and family. I hope on starting secondary school that I
enjoy it, make a good impression on my teachers, make new friends and join the school
sports teams. I also hope from first year to
leaving cert I get good results in my tests so I
can go to college and study to be a teacher and
in my spare time I hope I will be a professional
sportsperson. I also hope to have a nice family
and live a long healthy life.

By Avril Cashman (Ms. Conways Sixth Class)

Hi my name is Melissa and my hopes for the
future are to have a great last few weeks in
primary school and graduate. After I graduate
I would like to enjoy my summer holidays and in
September go to secondary school. I would
like to have a good education make new friends
and get along with the teachers there and do
great on my exams. When I am around sixteen
years of age I want to get my drivers licence

so I can drive myself around the place without

always asking my parents. Once Im finished
secondary school I want to go to a college and
get a fantastic job I love, like right now I
want to be a chef but I will have to see when
Im older. So if I become a chef I might get
my own restaurant and it would be great. While
I am waiting for that to happen I would rent an
apartment so Id have a place to live in. Once I
finish my college years I would of course get a
huge house and I mean huge and it would have
three or four or even five bedrooms. It would
also have a sitting room with lovely coloured
couch, nice wallpaper, a fire place with a flat
screen TV above it and in the kitchen there
would be a dishwasher, washing machine, a
kettle, a toaster of course, lovely wallpaper
and well, all the stuff a kitchen is supposed to
have. In my back garden there will be a huge
amount of space for the two dogs that I will
have. One of them will be a Yorkie and the
other one would be a Shihtzu. Thats the stuff
I want when I have my own house. Finally at

last when Im older and that wont be for a long

while, but anyway what Im saying is when Im
older I want to meet a nice caring man and get
to know him maybe after two to three years
being together we will get married and have
around three to four children. If we have four
children then I want two girls and two boys so
the two boys would look after their two little
sisters. My childrens names would be Lola,
Helen, Brad and Zack. Maybe I might not even
like those names when Im older so we will see.
In my garden Id have to buy swings and a lot
of toys and of course bikes so they wont be
bored and I hope they grow big and healthy.
Also, I hope that I live an enjoyable long life. I
know my hopes for the
future are a lot but a girl
can dream.

from Fourth class and
Victoria Machie from
sixth class came first in
their sprints. Vicky, Avril, Julia K. and Erin
Joyce came second in the
over 11s girls relay. The
boys took part in the
evening on this hot sunny
day .They represented

the school well on this

day. Well done to all who
took part. We look forward to the Cross Country in Conna in September.

THIRD CLASS SCHOOL TOUR

Our school tour this year is

going to be to Cork city. We
will be going to Cork City Gaol,
the Lifetime Lab, Bowling and
McDonalds. My school tour
partner will be Sorcha and I
hope its a sunny day! I am
mostly looking forward to
Cork City Gaol because it will

be interesting to learn about

the old cells and prisoners and
what they ate. I like bowling
too, I like the bright colours
on the wall and getting
strikes. I think I will have a
burger and chips and a Club
orange. I hope Mr. Hickey
doesnt eat it on me!

Hickeys Third Class)

AMAZING JOURNEY WORKSHOP

All of the school went on the

Amazing Journey. On the
Amazing Journey we met Noah
and a princess from Egypt. She
found Moses. We met Mary and
the last person we met was a
giant. The giant was really funny. He told us that he mocked
some people and after a while

VOLUME 10, ISSUE 4

they sent out a boy with a sling

shot and they threw it at him
and he died. At the end we got
to dress up and eat different
kinds of food. One of them was
two pieces of this kind of
bread with honey and grapes.
Before we went they gave the
teachers this little activity

page and a sheet to order a

bigger copy of the Bible. It was
really fun!

MY HOPES FOR THE FUTURE

I hope that I have a good last few weeks in

primary school. I hope that when I get to
Australia this summer that I will have a
great time and enjoy it. I hope in secondary
school I will have a great time and make
loads of new friends. I hope that I get
good scores in my leaving cert. By the time
I am finished secondary school I hope that
I can drive and I have a job here and there
so I can get a car. When I am in college I
hope to play for U.C.C. hurling team and I
hope that I play for Cork in hurling as well.
I hope when I am finished college that I
get high scores on my leaving exams so I
can get a good job and get well paid and
enjoy it. I hope to go to Australia also because some of my family are over there.

A fireman is what I want to be. I would like

to be a doctor. My future is not today. I

would make a company. I hope I can go to
Africa to see an elephant. Well I could go
all around the world to see all the animals
who are left in the world. I want to be a
superhero

Class)

FIFTH CLASS HEAD FOR QUEENSTOWN!

Fifth class are going on a school
tour. We are going to the Titanic Experience. The Titanic
Experience is a really fun place
where you see replicas of lower
and first class rooms. You start
off by getting a ticket of one
out of one hundred and twenty
three passengers. Those were

the last passengers called on

board the Titanic in Cobh or
Queenstown. At the end you
know if you die or not. Then we
will go on a ferry to Spike Island adventure centre to do water sports and other activities.
We will also have our lunch
there before catching the fer-

ry back to Cobh.

FOURTH CLASS SCHOOL TOUR

We are all very excited about
our school tour this year. We
are going to Trabolgan doing
Combat Lazer, Crazy Golf,
swimming and the playground!
Were going to have so much
fun. Everyone in our class has
been talking about it ever since
we got the note. We think the

VOLUME 10, ISSUE 4

swimming pool is going to be

very big with long slides. The
Combat Lazer sounds like a lot
of fun. We imagine it will be
very similar to the Lazer Tag in
Perks and that it will be very
dark. Crazy golf will be awesome. We will have lots of fun
and to finish it off we will have

a picnic in the playground! It

will be awesome!!

BUNSCOIL CHESS TOURNAMENT 2016

There were a lot of good

players, both boys and girls,
in this chess tournament. We
had a lot of victories and defeats, but everyone did well,
had fun and we were all happy for each other in the
tournament. We all had a
great time and thats what
matters. The three winners
of the tournament were: 1st:
Chris Brophy, 2nd: Joao Mira,
3rd: Liam Fitzpatrick. Now
here are a few words from

the winners; Chris: It was a

very exciting experience for
me because I played a lot of
games with my friends!
Joao: I feel proud of myself
and all my friends that competed in the tournament.
Liam: It was amazing because it was the first award
I ever won! Thanks a lot to
all the Sixth Class teachers,
the participants themselves
for competing in the tournament and a special thanks to

a great teacher named Miss

Power for giving up her
break to give us a chance to
play in the tournament.

OLDER THAN IRELAND AT THE CINEMOBILE!

There was a Cinemobile in
Youghal. They asked sixth class
to go. We walked out to it. It
was in the Quays car park. We
got to see some of the Centenary from 1916. One of the
centenarians is a smoker and
one of them was alive when
Bloody Sunday happened in

Croke Park. We got to watch a

movie called Older Than Ireland. The Cinemobile could not
fit under the Clock Gate. The
word Cinemobile comes from
France because they love their
cinema. It was like a real cinema inside but there was no popcorn or fizzy drinks. My part-

ner was Jack K. It was really

good. We all loved it probably
because we
missed a bit of
school!

KARATE KIDZ LEON AND EOGHAN!

This month Leon Kenneally and

Eoghan Long went up to Bandon. I
went for my blue belt and I got
it, said Leon. I went for my
brown belt and I got it, said
Eoghan. HURRAY!!!! Two people
from our club were there to try
for their black belts but unfortunately they didnt get them on the
day. For the next grading I will be

VOLUME 10, ISSUE 4

going for another brown belt, said

Eoghan. I will be going for my purple belt, said Leon. On Sunday 29
May we went up to Clonmel for the
All Irelands and we did very well.
I got third place in katas (that is
when you do all the moves!), said
Leon. I did not take part in
them, said Eoghan. We both did
very well in fighting as we both

came first!
