The 118th Philippine Independence Day

The Filipino Association of Newman

celebrated the 118th anniversary of the
Philippine Independence Day in June.
Members and guests enjoyed musical
performances by the members of the
association, as well as dance numbers
highlighting the talent of the community.
The central attraction was the array of
Filipino fashion showcased on the runway.
The men donned the Barong Tagalog and
the women Barot Saya. Three variations of
this dress were worn on the runway. Ethnic
fashion was also represented such as the
mountain provinces of The Cordillera,
along with the Muslim silk fabrics from the
Mindanao region. The clothes worn were
woven by locals in the Philippines.

The Philippine Independence Day

celebrates the camaraderie and ingenuity
of Filipinos. What better way to show this
than a fashion show!
Proceeds from the evening went towards
the Newman Senior High School Country
Week.
The programme and production were
organised by Neil Geganzo. The Filipino
Association acknowledge their sponsors;
the Shire of East Pilbara, Woolworths
Newman, Whaleback News Agency,
Newman Visitor Centre, and the Asian
Merchant Shop.

weekend held by the Newman Lions Club
between 19 and 22 August and its coexisting events including speed boats
and horse races, Newman residents and
visitors will be able to enjoy the Outback
Fusion Festival between 23-25 September.
It will be hosted by the Shire of East
Pilbara thanks to funding from Tourism
WA under the Regional Events Scheme
and the major supporter, BHP Billiton.
This three day event will see music and
dance performances, and art and cooking
events, along with local talent being
showcased. Local groups and individuals
wishing to be involved in the Outback
Fusion Festival may contact the Shire on

There is a national shortage of qualified

swimming instructors. Newman has
not been immune to this. The Newman
Aquatic Centre wishes to encourage
residents to gain qualifications to teach
and/or undertake lifeguard work. Classes
are being offered on 10-11 September
(teacher of swimming and water safety); 12
September (infant and preschool aquatics);
and 17-18 September for pool lifeguards.
Classes are dependent on the number
of registered participants. Interested

The Shire of East Pilbaras Artist in

Residence programme, now in its third
year, remains one of the highest residencies
in the country providing a $15,000 prize
with a budget of $40,000. The 2016 winner
is Olaniyi Rasheed Akindiya who has held
other residencies and workshops in several
African countries including Ghana, Senegal
and Nigeria, along with the Netherlands,
Brazil and Bolivia and in his home country
of USA. Akirashs artistic avenues include
sculpture, painting, performance art,
installations, video, and body painting.
Previous winners of this award include
Hannah Quinlivan (2014) and Yasuaki
Onishi (2015). Akirashs theme this year is
Light. He will be at the Fortescue Festival
and be running workshops in Newman,
Marble Bar and Nullagine.

With the Shire of East Pilbara taking over

the running of Newmans library, it is
undergoing some major upgrades with
the additional inclusion of an art room.
While these renovations are taking place,
the library will be temporarily closed until
6 July. It will reopen on 7 July with special
activities in honour of NAIDOC Week
including Indigenous story time and craft
between 9 and 11 am.

Banner on the Terrace

As mentioned in the June edition of

Newman News, the winning banner design
for the Shire of East Pilbaras representation
at the Banner on the Terrace display on St
George and Adelaide Terrace in Perth was
by Georgie McInerney. Her design was
painted onto the full sized banner with
the help of community and school groups,
and long time residents. Shire President,
Lynne Cragie, marked the design with her
footprint.

Shopping Centre

As mentioned in previous editions of

Newman News, the new retail facility is a
4,000sqm shopping centre located in the
Newman Town Centre. It is a partnership
between St Bartholomews House and BHP
Billiton Iron Ore. St Barts is using the $30
million provided by BHP Billiton to build and
manage the retail facility and then use the
operating profits to provide future support
to the community. The building is taking
shape and is expected to be complete by
the end of the year. Tenants are currently in
negotiations and securing places for their
shops with rumours running rife of what
they might be. Stay tuned.

13 Flat Tyres and Elders to Pass on Knowledge

In early June, twenty-five Martu and

ten people from Kanyirninpa Jukurrpa,
Martumili Artists, the National Museum of
Australia (NMA), the Prime Minister and
Cabinets office, and Puntukurnu Aboriginal
Medical Service (PAMS) went on a seven
day trip out on Martu country.
The aim of the trip was to visit sites along
part of the Minyipurru (Seven Sisters)
song line, located north of Punmu. During
the trip oral histories of peoples pujiman
(bushman) travels through the area were
recorded, while Martu artists who were
participating in the trip painted works
focusing on the country, the Minyipurru
or the trip itself. The inclusion of younger
rangers on the trip not only provided the
women rangers with a chance to run a
long trip independently of the male ranger
groups but also provided opportunities for
the elders to pass knowledge and stories to
younger Martu.

The trip covered almost 600 kms of remote

country, most of which was completely offroad with no track whatsoever. The convoy
consisted of ten vehicles, carrying all the
provisions for the week including almost
two tonne of water. During the trip there
was thirteen flat tyres. A slight annoyance
but a good chance for the women rangers
to practice their split-rim changes.
The team managed to ground-truth four
named water sites on the trip including one
site that had not been visited since pujiman
days.
It was a fantastic trip and a valuable
opportunity for younger Martu to learn
from their Elders.

Walk for Country

Against Uranium
Mining
Martu people and supporters walked from
Newman on 4 June to Karlamilyi on 12
June to stop the Kintyre uranium mining on
their country. The walk took them through
Lalapakujarra up to Purnumalarra then to
Pulyjalyja.
The remote community, Parngur, originally
started in response to prevent and block
the opening of the 1960s uranium mine.
The mine borders the Rudall River National
Park.
Camecos website states that Kintyre is an
advanced-stage, joint venture exploration
project with Mitsubishi Development Pty
Ltd. Also that it is amenable to open pit
mining. They acquired it from Rio Tinto in
2008 and cite a land use agreement signed
with the Martu people in 2012. They
received State and Federal environmental
approval in 2015. We carried out further
exploration to test for potential satellite
deposits at Kintyre and other regional
exploration projects close to Kintyre, which
did not produce any significant results.
Anohni, the famous British American singer
artist and environmental activist, came
through Newman on her way to the Walk
For Country after a week of performing at
the Sydney Opera House.
In 2013, Anohni spent ten days living with
the Martu of Parngur through a friend who
was doing a documentary on Martumili
art. She has since campaigned against a
proposed uranium mine on their ancestral
land.

Turf Club Races

Newman Turf Clubs 2016 BHP Billiton Iron
Ores Newman Cup races will be held on 22
August this year. It falls on the Fortescue
Festival weekend only once every seven
years due to the race season calendar. It
attracts competitors from all around the
state.
To ensure that the races can be held, the
club is seeking additional sponsorship. The
sponsorship package on offer will include
signage display, public mentions, and some
complimentary entry and beverages. If
companies are able to sponsor, please call

Race day has been a staple in Newmans

social calendar and includes tent seating,
childrens activities, Fashions on the Field, a
live DJ, a variety of food vendors and more.
Two-up will be played after the final race.
Attendees will not be able to bring their
own alcoholic beverages. Identification
showing age is required for those over 18
years old entering. The gates will open at
midday with the first race at 1 pm. The
entry fee is $25 for adults, childrens and
pensioners tickets are $10. For pre-sale

"I am joining my Martu friends Nola

and Curtis Taylor and over 100 other
people from Parngur and neighbouring
communities in the WA desert on an 8 day,
180 km protest walk from their remote
community to the site of Mitsubishi and
Cameco's proposed open cut uranium
mine. Anohni said.
The proposed Kintyre mine is on their
traditional lands and a threat to their wellbeing, as well as being gouged out of the
Karlamilyi National Park. Curtis and I did
a piece about it on National Indigenous
Television network today," she said.
Despite her advocacy, including a high
profile appearance on ABC's Q&A, the
mine looks set to go ahead. The federal
government has granted conditional
approval to dig inside the national park.

Volunteer for the

Newman SJA Pit Crew

The Newman St John Ambulance subcentre is volunteer operated. They

supply our community with emergency
ambulance services, first aid training, and
first aid kit servicing. The ambulance subcentre relies on countless unpaid hours
to provide this service within Newman.
The sub-centre is kept financial by these
services. Without local businesses to offer
training and kit servicing for, and without
volunteer support they cannot survive.
Between January and April this year alone,
their volunteers have provided over 6,500
hours service. This was achieved with
less than 20 regularly active volunteer
members, the majority of whom fit this
between their day-to-day working lives.
These hours are starting to become
unsustainable.
With this in mind, Newman St John
Ambulance puts out a call for Pit Crew.

Boogie Roos

Established in 2011, Boogie Roos is

an award winning licensed music and
movement activity group for 0-5 year olds
and it is now run locally at The Beach Indoor
Play Centre every Monday and Thursday
morning throughout the school term.

They have recently developed new

volunteer roles within the Newman St John
Ambulance Pit Crew to take additional
pressure off the volunteer ambulance
officers. The roles are created to be flexible
and diverse, and require minimal training
or background knowledge. They are the
perfect role for people who would like to
help in other ways.

The weekly sessions are coordinated by

Emily Bastian, who is a qualified Boogie
Roos instructor and mother of two. Emily
moved to Newman in 2015 with her family
and realised there was a need for such a
programme in town. She has since joined
the team at The Beach and has brought the
programme on board there.

Such roles include:

- Roster Coordinator - to help coordinate
and ensure our services are covered
- Ambulance Pit Crew - maintain and
clean vehicles
- Station Pit Crew - maintain and help the
station
- Social Pit Crew - help at our fundraising
events

This musical programme incorporates

lively songs and nursery rhymes along with
lots of vibrant props to give the children a
sensory experience and get them up and
moving. If you pop in to The Beach on any
given Monday or Thursday you will see it is
not just the children who have embraced
this programme, parents and carers are
interactive as well.

a part of the Newman St John Ambulance

Boogie Roos was established in the

Wheatbelt by Sandra Bennett and now
runs approximately 15 sessions per week
in Perth and across the Wheatbelt, and
with such a well structured programme its
popularity will continue to grow.

Together we can work to continue this vital

service in Newman.

Visit The Beach and see what it is all

about. Sessions run from 9.30 am for
approximately 40-45 minutes and you can
enjoy refreshments from the kiosk while
your little one has some fun, or get on in
there yourself and embrace your inner
child!

Extended Camping at
Cape Keraudren
Cape Keraudren, part of the Shire of East
Pilbara, is a popular tourist spot especially
attracting interstate tourists who camp for
extended periods.
Under recent changes to the Caravan Parks
and Camping Grounds Act 1995, people
cannot stay longer than 28 days in a three
month period in a recognised nature
reserve area.
The capes nature reserve is about 120 km
North East of Port Hedland, near Pardoo.
It is known as a great fishing and crabbing
spot with diverse scenery and a place
where wildlife carers have released their
rehabilitated animals.
The distance of the cape from Port Hedland
and Broome make replenishing supplies
prohibitive and may partly explain peoples
desire for an extended visit.
With the caretaker employed by the
Shire along with maintenance of the
area, the Shire makes a financial loss of
approximately $70,000 per year despite
being offset by camping fees. The caretaker
helps to oversee the area and aid visitors.
Not only will length of stay limit the
enjoyment of visitors but it will also have a
negative financial impact on the Shire.
The Shire invites community members
and organisations to contact the Hon.
Tony Simpson MLA who is the Minister for
Local Government; Community Services;
Seniors and Volunteering; and Youth to
make your views heard. Additionally, the
Hon. Brendon Grylls MLA, the Member for
Pilbara may also be an appropriate contact
as the areas representative.

10 Tips for Keeping Your Indoor Kitty Happy: Part 2

Strategies to help satisfy your indoor cat

so that he or she does not become bored,
brain-dead or morbidly obese.
1.

Provide outlets to display natural

behaviours such as a tall scratching
post and a cat tree. Engage regularly
in interactive and structured play.
Cats live in a vertical world, they like
looking down on things and being
up high provides them a sense of
security. Make sure you have several
vertical spaces for them to hangout or
nap.

2.

Cats are highly intelligent creatures

and thrive on mental stimulation.
Clicker training is great fun for both
you and your cat.

3.

Provide a safe manner for your kitten

to explore the great outdoors by
building or purchasing an enclosed
Cat Run or Cattio and, or, taking your
cat on walks using a fitted cat harness
and lead.

4.

Dont forget pheromones diffusers!

Feliway (stocked at the Newman Vets)

is a great way to minimise stress in

your indoor cat, especially if your cat
has underlying anxiety or suffers from
urinary tract disease (eg. FLUTD) or
inflammatory bowel disease.
5.

Accidents can happen. In the

unfortunately situation your cat
escapes it is best to be prepared. This
means desexing and microchipping
your kitten and ensuring that their
collar with attached ID tags is worn at
all times.

North West Netball Regions Championships

Newman Netball Association hosted the
Northwest Championships between 17
and 19 June. Junior and senior teams from
Karratha, Broome, Port Hedland, Tom Price
and Paraburdoo went up against the local
teams.
The weekend was full of great athleticism
from all participants and Newman saw our
own U/14s and Division 2 teams compete
in the finals. Unfortunately they did not
come away with a win.

The weekend was coordinated by Life

Member of the association and long
standing resident, Renee Kumeroa, with the
help of the NNA committee and members.
NNA would like to wish Renee best of luck
in her new adventures. Her commitment
and dedication to the association and
wider netball community over the past 15
years has been a great accomplishment.
Thank you to Lend Lease that was a major
contributor to the weekend.

A number of NNA junior players were

selected to participate in further
development from the region, and three
senior players were recognised in the All
Stars teams.
