EARTHQUAKE
An earth quake is a natural shocking of earth caused by breaking of rocks. The
primary cause of earthquakes is the movement of masses of earth along fault
lines. Fault lines can occur anywhere. Nevertheless, they are normally created
from pressure generated by the movement of continental plates on the mantle of
the earth.

The location below the earth's surface where the earthquake starts or originated
is called the hypocenter or focal point, and the location directly above it on
the surface of the earth is called the epicenter.

Seismology is the study of earth quakes. Earthquakes are recorded by

Seismograph; it is instrument to record earthquakes by the help of seismogram
which is recording strip.

There are almost 800-1000 earthquakes hit the ground annually.

Geographical distribution

No area of the world is free from earthquake. It may cause at any place and at any
time just like heart attack.
- Circum pacific belt include china, Chile, California, Japan, Indonesia,
Philippines, new Zealand etc.
- Alpine: Mediterranean turns Asiatic belts include turkey, Iran, northern
India.

90 – 95% earthquakes occur in these two belts remaining 5% are widely

distributed.
