i. Before the How?, the Why?
1. Students now have texts / relevant class materials on cell phones
ii. What can a mobile device do that a desktop cannot?

2. Cell phones are a controversial topic.
3. Many schools have outright banned mobile use in the classroom.
iii. Advantages
1. 12-18 year old demographic may use phones for security purposes (for
parents to keep track of them).
iv. Disadvantages
1. Possible to use cell phones as a means of…
a. Cheating
b. Test-copying
c. Answer sharing via text message
2. Privacy endangered (illicit photographs, et cetera).
b. Relevance to UCEDA Institute
i. Budgetary concerns
1. (Reference – Mark Eery) “Necessity is the mother of invention”
2. Western seaboard / Eastern seaboard have easy high speed internet access,
but many other locations do not.
3. Internet affordability is not keeping pace with mobile affordability
4. Using mobile technology allows us to shift operational costs to the student
base.

i. UCEDA Institute has a complicated population of students

 1. Mobile technology is yet another tool we may use to reach difficult-to-
reach demographics
2. Cuts down on paper waste
3. Allows teacher easier means of direction of instruction
4. It is the teacher’s responsibility to guide use of mobile technology to
proper lesson content.

a. Use of advanced techniques runs the risk of alienating less ‘tech-savvy’ students
b. Limit lesson to simple techniques:
i. Basic apps, if any
ii. Texting
iii. Voice Message activities
iv. E-journaling
